Luis E. Cobos

Luis E. Cobos, 101, of Linden died March 12 in Trinitas Hospital, Elizabeth.

Born in Quito, Ecuador, Mr. Cobos settled in New York in 1974 and lived in Jersey City and Elizabeth for 14 years before moving to Linden five years ago. He worked in a public government office in Ecuador for 50 years before retiring in 1973.

Surviving are four sons, Luis, Ruben, Marcelo and Patrick; five daughters, Nelly Sestito, Gladys Jaramillo, Alicia Castrelos, America and Martha; 28 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Madeline Kennedy

Madeline R. Kennedy, 69, of Roselle died March 12 in the Manor Care, Mountainside.

Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Kennedy lived in Roselle Park for most of her life and moved to Roselle 10 years ago. She was a cashier for Eckerd Drug Store, Union, for six years before retiring 16 years ago.

Surviving are a son, Allen; four brothers, Robert, Thomas, William and Edward Guarino; three sisters, Anna Van Dyk, Bernadette Pagano and Mina Walters, and a grandchild.

Joseph Malandro Sr.

Joseph Malandro Sr., 87, of Rahway died March 12 at home.

Born in Staten Island, Mr. Malandro moved to Rahway 53 years ago. He was a custodial supervisor at Merck & Co., Rahway, for 20 years before retiring 21 years ago. Mr. Malandro previously was a district sales manager at General Baking Co., Newark, for 20 years and, before that, he was a longshoreman in New York City. Mr. Malandro was an Army veteran of World War II. He participated in the Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star. Mr. Malandro was a member of the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Knights of Columbus, all in Clark.

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara; a son, Joseph, and three grandchildren.

Emanuel Frangella Jr.

Emanuel “Manny” Frangella Jr., 68, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Linden, a retired longtime Linden tax assessor, died March 12 in the Cleveland Clinic, Naples.

Born in Roselle, Mr. Frangella lived in Linden most of his life before moving to Naples three years ago. He was employed by the city of Linden at the tax assessor for 36 years before retiring in 2003. Mr. Frangella was a member of the Association of Municipal Assessors of New Jersey and the International Association of Assessing Officers. He served in the Marine Corps during peacetime.

Surviving are a son, Michael; a sister, Maryanne Dwyer, and two grandchildren.

Celso Arellano Sr.

Celso Arellano Sr., 67, of Rahway died March 14 in the Rahway Geriatric Center.

Born in the Calapan, Mindoro, Philippines, Mr. Arellano came to the United States in 1996 and lived in Rahway for 10 years. He was employed with the Home Depot, Avenel. Before that, Mr. Arellano worked at the JFK Hospital-Hartwyck Rehabilitation Center in Edison and the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway. He was a section chief with the Philippine National Weather Bureau, where he supervised the daily weather observation operations at the Dillman Communication Center for 30 years before retiring in 1995. Mr. Arellano was a graduate of the Philippine College of Commerce and the Feati Institute of Technology.

Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Maura; two daughters, Racel Michaels and Grace Gregorio Jr.; a son, Celso V. Jr.; four brothers, four sisters, and three grandchildren.

Catherine Packard

Catherine Packard, 91, of Rahway died March 14 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital at Rahway.

Born in New York City, Mrs. Packard lived in Rahway for many years. She was a clerical worker for Merck & Co., Rahway, for many years before retiring many years ago.

Surviving are two daughters, Catherine Turk and Patricia Michaels; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Edward Zarszynski

Edward J. Zarszynski, 73, of Roselle died March 16 in JFK Medical Center, Edison.

Born in Bayonne, Mr. Zarszysnki lived in Old Bridge before moving to Roselle 36 years ago. He was a pipe fitter with AT&T, Kearny, for 33 years before retiring in 1994. Mr. Zarszynski served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a Eucharistic minister at Union Hospital and JFK Medical Center and a volunteer with the Center for Hope Hospice in Scotch Plains. Mr. Zarszynski was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2859 in Linden and a fourth degree member of the John P. Washington Assembly in Linden, Clark and Rahway.

Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Geraldine A.; two sons, John and Dean; two daughters, Ellen M. Joyce and Susan G., and five grandchildren.

Edward Newell

Edward O. Newell, 82, of Elizabeth, formerly of Linden, died March 11 in Trinitas Hospital, Elizabeth.

Born in Linden, Mr. Newell lived in Roselle for many years before moving to Elizabeth 10 years ago. He was an operator for United States Metal Co., Carteret, for 10 years before retiring. Mr. Newell was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He served in Central Burma, China and India and was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with three Bronze stars. Mr. Newell was a trustee and a member of the usher board and choir, all at the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, Roselle.

Surviving is a sister, Barbara Sampson.

Catherine Kahi

Catherine B. Kahi, 82, a lifelong resident of Elizabeth, died March 13 in Union Hospital.

Mrs. Kahi was born in Hillside. She was a clerk for the Union County Welfare Department in Elizabeth for 15 years before retiring in 1994. Earlier, Mrs. Kahi owned and operated Kahi Cleaners. Elizabeth, for 15 years until it closed in 1977. She was a member of the Rosary Society of the Blessed Sacrament Church, Elizabeth.

Surviving are two sons, Robert and William; two sisters, Bobbie Coppola and Betty Altobelli, and seven grandchildren.

Ralph Yanuzzi

Ralph J. Yanuzzi, 83, of Elizabeth died March 12 in Trinitas Hospital, Elizabeth.

Born in Hazelton, Pa., Mr. Yanuzzi moved to Elizabeth in 1949. He was a machinist for Pueleos , Elizabeth, for 10 years before retiring many years ago. Mr. Yanuzzi served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Peterstown Senior5 Citizens Club in Elizabeth.

Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Sestina; a daughter, Diane DiGiorgio; two brothers, Joseph and Pat; a sister, Millie Sulkvch, and two grandchildren.

James Bober

James Bober, 84, a lifelong resident of Elizabeth, died March 13 at home.

Mr. Bober was a mason for the Department of Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care Center at Lyons for more than 20 years before retiring in 1987. He served in the Army during World War II.

Surviving are a brother, Peter, and a sister, Marie Niemiec.

Terence Reilly III

Terence Reilly III, 60, a lifelong resident of Elizabeth, died March 14 in University Hospital, Newark.

Mr. Reilly was a member of the Elizabeth Police Department for 38 years, attaining the rank of lieutenant. He was a member of the Police Benevolent Association Local 4 in Elizabeth and the Superior Officers of Elizabeth.

Surviving are his wife, Katherine; a son, Brian; two brothers, Robert and Paul, and a grandchild.

Jesus A. Escobar

Jesus A. Escobar, 64, of Elizabeth died March 14 in Trinitas Hospital, Elizabeth.

Born in Cali Colombia, Mr. Escobar came to Linden in 1969 and lived in Kearny for 20 years before moving to Elizabeth in 1998. He was an independent truck driver for more than 20 years. Earlier, Mr. Escobar was a truck driver for Paul’s Trucking, Avenel, for 15 years.

Surviving are his wife of nine years, Felicitas; a son, John; two daughters, Ana Panayiotou and Nora Montoya; two brothers, four sisters, and seven grandchildren.

John F. McEwen

John F. McEwen, 72, of Bloomfield died March 8 at home.

Born in New York City, he lived in Queens before moving to Bloomfield 40 years ago.

Mr. McEwen was director of security at ITT in Clifton for 16 years before retiring in 1993. Previously, he worked for the Internal Revenue Service Intelligence Division in New York for 20 years.

He was a 1955 graduate of Fordham University, New York City, with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.

He served in the National Guard during peacetime.

Surviving are sons, Brian R. and Scott M; brothers, Arthur and Robert; and a grandchild.

Virginia J. Kisiel

Ms.Virginia J. Kisiel, 86, of Bloomfield died March 7 in Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville.

Born in Newark, she lived in Bloomfield for 86 years.

Ms. Kisiel was an assistant factory supervisor at New Jersey Bell Telephone, Newark, where she worked for 34 years before retiring.

She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.

Marion Barnard

Mrs. Marion Barnard, 75, of Bloomfield died March 6 in the Van Dyk Manor, Montclair.

Born in Montreal, Canada, she lived in the Bronx and Connecticut before moving to Bloomfield 18 years ago.

Mrs. Barnard was a jewelry sales associate at Marcus Jewelers in Paramus and Walter Bauman in Millburn before retiring four years ago.

Surviving are sons, Michael and Kurt; a daughter, Susan Cesario; sisters, Roslyn Lowy and Anita Weisbrot; seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Peter Mancuso

Peter Mancuso, 82, of Bloomfield died March 11 in the Compassionate Care Hospice at the Department of Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care Center, East Orange.

Born in Newark, he lived in Orange for 50 years before moving to Bloomfield 12 years ago.

Mr. Mancuso was a mail handler at the U.S. Post Office in Kearny for seven years before retiring in 1983. Previously, he worked as a clerk for Railway Express, Newark.

He served in the Army during World War II.

He was a member of the West Orange Knights of Columbus, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, West Orange, the American Legion Post 190, Orange, and was a volunteer for the Essex County Board of Elections.

Surviving are his wife, Jane; daughters, Anne Marie Hertel, Jeannette and Roselyn Mancuso, and Cynthia Mindo; sons, Peter and Edwin; a sister, Angelina Breen; and three grandchildren.
