John Thomas
John Thomas, 92, of Toms River died Feb. 18 in the Burnt Tavern Rehabilitation Center, Brick.
Mr. Thomas was a supervisor with General Electric in Paterson for many years and a past president of the International Union of Electrical Workers’ local in Bloomfield.
After retiring, Mr. Thomas worked for AT&T and Bechtel for several years.
Mr. Thomas was a member of the Knights of Columbus in West Orange. Born in Orange, he moved to Toms River 10 years ago.
Surviving are sons, Richard and Bill; sisters, Mae Gleriun and Anne Kennum; 10 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Mary Snelling
Mary Snelling, 87, of Union died Feb. 16 in the South Mountain Health Care and Rehabilitation Center, Union.
Mrs. Snelling was a seamstress at Coopers Coat Factory in Newark for 10 years before retiring.
She sang in the choir at St. Mark’s Church, East Orange, and was a member of the National Council of Negro Women and of Caring and Sharing, both in Newark.
Born in Upatoi, Ga., Mrs. Snelling lived in Newark before moving to Union last year.
Surviving are a daughter, Dolores Armstrong; a sister, Viola Joseph; a brother, Oscar; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Lucille Carollo
Lucille M. Carollo, 87, of Toms River died Feb. 18 in Bey Lea Village Nursing Home, Toms River.
Mrs. Carollo worked for Ward’s Baking Company, East Orange, for 25 years, retiring in 1980.
Born in Jersey City, Mrs. Carollo lived in Newark and Bloomfield before moving to Toms River in 1995.
Surviving are a son, Nicholas; and daughters, Catherine Carollo and Karen Glass.
Reginald Thaxton Jr.
Reginald H. Thaxton Jr., 73, of Orange died Jan. 31 in Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville.
Mr. Thaxton was a retired member of the Orange Police Department. He served as a patrolman, rode with the motorcycle squad and rose to the detective bureau during his 27 years with the police force.
Prior to his work in law enforcement, Mr. Thaxton was a Navy seaman aboard the USS Missouri. Born in Newark, he moved to Orange with his parents during his teenage years.
Surviving are his wife, Roberta; sons, Reginald III and Raymond; a daughter, Rebecca; and two grandchildren.
Lawrence Kantor
Lawrence Kantor, 91, of West Orange died Feb. 20 at home.
Mr. Kantor was president of Lawrence Kantor Inc., a plumbing- and heating-supply company in Orange, for 51 years.
He received a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University in Annapolis, Md., in 1935.
Mr. Kantor was a lieutenant in the Army during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater from 1941 until 1946. He was a member of the Cedar Hill Country Club in Livingston and the Polo Club in Boca Raton, Fla..
Born in Newark, Mr. Kantor lived in East Orange for 45 years, West Orange for 30 years and between Boca Raton, Fla., and West Orange for the past 17 years.
Josephine Montesano
Josephine Ann Montesano, 69, of Union died Feb. 19 in Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston.
Born in Summit, Miss Montesano lived in Orange and Mount Olive before moving to Union in 1989.
Surviving are a brother, Augustine; and sisters, Mary Bobcheck, Concetta Trimboli, Carmela Glynn and Dolores Dower.
William Thomas
William S. Thomas, 71, a lifelong East Orange resident and former 5th Ward councilman there, died Feb. 14 in St. Michael’s Medical Center, Newark.
Mr. Thomas was the first black councilman elected to represent East Orange’s 5th Ward on the East Orange City Council. He served for eight years between 1970 and 1978. During his service, Mr. Thomas was selected by his colleagues to chair the council.
He also was appointed by Mayor James Kelly to serve as a commissioner with the East Orange Human Rights Commission. Mr. Thomas earned a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University, Newark. He served in the Army during peacetime and later worked for the Essex County Department of Citizen Services.
Mr. Thomas was the founder of the Fifth Ward Civic Association, the Newark Police Community Relations Project and the Lewis Miles and William Thomas Civic Association.
Surviving are a son, Stephen; a daughter, Kyia Winbush; a brother, Stephen Thomas; a former 1st Ward councilman, and a grandchild.
Dr. Angelo Iannone
Dr. Angelo B. Iannone, 92, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Orange, died Feb. 18 at The Inn at Sarasota Bay Club. Dr. Iannone was a general practitioner, with a practice in East Orange, for more than 60 years before retiring six years ago.
He was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, where he received his bachelor’s degree, and Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, where he received his medical degree.
An Army veteran of World War II, Dr. Iannone attained the rank of major and served as a flight surgeon for the Night Fighters Squadron.
Born in Orange, Dr. Iannone lived in West Orange for more than 30 years before moving to Sarasota.
Surviving are daughters, Nina Belott and Lisa Radigan; a son, Christopher; a brother, Buddy; a sister, Katherine DeMarco; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Helen Loven
Helen M. Loven of Bloomfield died Feb. 20 at home.
Mrs. Loven was a cashier for 40 years with the ABB Lummus Corp., Bloomfield, before retiring 23 years ago.
She was a member of the Society of Blessed Virgin at Holy Name of Jesus Church in East Orange, a secretary of the Bloomfield Renters Association and a volunteer with the adult clinic at Mountainside Hospital in Glen Ridge.
Surviving are daughters, Stacy Szmak and Gail Najuch; sons, Terence and Frederick Lovenguth; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Laurette Morgan
Laurette A. Morgan, 68, of South Plainfield died Feb. 22 at the Fetz family home in South Plainfield.
Mrs. Morgan was a senior lab technician for the National Starch and Chemical Corp., Bridgewater, retiring in 1994.
She created and received a patent in adhesive bandages and in Dymo Tape. She also was a semi-pro tennis player.
Born in New York City, Mrs. Morgan lived in the Bronx, Jersey City, East Orange, Piscataway and Dunellen before moving to South Plainfield in 1986.
Surviving is a brother, Robert Schowers.
Elmer Schwartz
Elmer Schwartz, 81, of Short Hills, was founder and president of Archie Schwartz Co. in Livingston, an industrial real estate brokerage firm, for more than 50 years.
He served in the Army from 1942 to 1946 as an athletics instructor.
A member of the Maplewood Country Club, Schwartz also belonged to the Polo Club of Boca Raton, Fla.
Surviving are Francine D., his wife of 20 years; two daughters, Doree Kates and Debi Yellin; a sister, Doralee Herman, and several grandchildren.
Salvatore Rizzolo Jr.
Salvatore J. Rizzolo Jr., 70, of Bushkill, formerly of New Jersey, died March 3 in the Pocono Medical Center.
Rizzolo was a self-employed carpenter/contractor in the North Brunswick area for many years before retiring.
He served in the Navy from 1954 until 1958.
Born in Maplewood, he lived in North Brunswick before moving to Bushkill seven years ago.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou; two daughters, Laura O’Neill and Victoria Yandolino; a sister, Anna Treffinger, and four grandchildren.
Robert Jellinek
Robert Jellinek, 72, of Maplewood, died March 3 in the New Jersey Veterans Home, Paramus.
Jellinek was a self-employed printer for many years before retiring in 1990. He served in the Navy during the Korean War.
Born in Yonkers, N.Y., he lived in Manasquan before moving to Maplewood many years ago.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Ellen; two daughters, Tracie Stratakis and Elizabeth Imperial; two sons, Larry and Robert; a brother, Charles, and nine grandchildren.
Eleanor Castiglione
Eleanor Castiglione, 91, a lifelong resident of South Orange, died March 3 in the Sunrise Assisted Living, Basking Ridge. Castiglione was a bank teller for the Carteret Bank in South Orange for 12 years before retiring in 1979.
Earlier, she was a service assistant at the Prudential Insurance Co. in Maplewood and a bookkeeper at Woolworths department store in Orange.
She was a former treasurer of the Catholic Daughters and a member of the Rosary Society, both of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, and a member of the South Orange Senior Citizens.
Surviving are two sisters, Rosina M. Carchia and Elivira Meo.
Josephine B. Celano
Josephine B. Celano, 87, of South Orange, died March 6 in St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston.
Born in Newark, Celano lived in South Orange for 52 years.
Surviving are a son, Alfred Jr.; a daughter, Angela; two brothers, Dominick and Blase Palladino, and a grandchild.
