Mildred Julian Reynolds
Mildred Julian Reynolds, 97, of Maplewood died Feb. 25 in Overlook Hospital, Summit.
She was a teacher at Mount Carmel Parochial School, Orange, for eight years before retiring in 1987.
Previously, she was a teacher in the West Orange school system for 36 years.
After retirement, she was a remedial writing tutor at Bloomfield College for a few years.
She was a 1955 graduate of New Jersey State Teachers College. Born in Newark, she lived in South Orange and East Orange before moving to Maplewood eight months ago.
Surviving are a daughter, Judy Green; two sisters, Rose Julian and Helen Waterbor; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Joseph E. Scott
Joseph E. Scott, 87, of Spring Lake Heights, died Feb. 26 at home. He was a motorcycle patrolman with the Maplewood Police Department from 1941 to 1973, when he retired.
Born in Newark, he lived in Spring Lake Heights.
Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Carney and Judy Naklicki; a son, J. William; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
John P. Roberts
John P. Roberts, 74, of Maplewood, died Feb. 23 in Union Hospital. He was a bartender in the Union area for many years. He served in the Army as a combat engineer during the Korean War. Born in Newark, he lived in Union before moving to Maplewood.
Phyllis Schmidt
Phyllis Schmidt, 90, of Bridgewater, died March 1 in the Barbara E. Cheung Memorial Hospice, Edison.
Born in Ironton, Ohio, Schmidt lived in Maplewood for many years before moving to Bridgewater.
A grandchild survives her.
John Patrick Rapp
John Patrick Rapp, 64, of South Orange, died Feb. 28 in St. Michaels Medical Center, Newark.
He was president of the Danic Corp. in South Orange for 10 years before retiring. A 1969 graduate of Seton Hall University, he earned his law degree from the university’s law school four years later.
Rapp served in the Marine Corps Reserve from 1964 to 1966.
Born in Newark, he lived in South Orange for many years.
Surviving is a brother, George.
Arnold Segal
Arnold Segal, 90, of Maplewood, died March 1 at home.
Segal and his brothers, Charles and the late Joseph, Hyman and Max, founded Segal and Segal, a real estate development company in Morristown, in 1950. He retired in 2004.
Mr. Segal and Hattie, his wife of 68 years, were founders of the Children’s Institute, Verona, where he also served as president from 1975 to 1979.
The couple were also supporters of the Weitzmann Institute in Israel, Johns Hopkins University and Mount Sinai Hospital, as well as other services through the Jewish Community at MetroWest.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he lived in Maplewood for many years.
Also surviving are three sons, Richard, Kenneth and Stephen; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Josephine Montesano
Josephine Ann Montesano, 69, of Union died Feb. 19 in Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston.
Born in Summit, Miss Montesano lived in Orange and Mount Olive before moving to Union in 1989.
Surviving are a brother, Augustine; and sisters, Mary Bobcheck, Concetta Trimboli, Carmela Glynn and Dolores Dower.
Shirley Kurtz
Shirley Kurtz, 81, of Isle of Palms, S.C., a former East Orange resident, died Feb. 27 in Mount Pleasant Manor, Isle of Palms.
A travel consultant, Mrs. Kurtz was employed by Scully Travel in Millburn for many years before retiring a year ago.
Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Kurtz lived in East Orange and Springfield for many years before moving to Isle of Palms eight months ago.
Surviving are a daughter, Joyce Fuhr; a son, Gary; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Della Law
Della Law, 99, of East Orange died Feb. 24 at home.
Mrs. Law was a seamstress who was a member of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union before retiring.
A member of the Supreme Grand Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star in Newark, Mrs. Law was a 50-year member and deaconess at the Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church.
Born in Bainbridge, Ga., she lived in East Orange for many years.
William Schnell
William L. Schnell, 83, of Jim Thorpe, Pa., died March 2 in Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton, Pa..
Mr. Schnell was a telephone repairman for New Jersey Bell in Orange for 40 years before retiring in 1984.
Mr. Schnell was a member of the Train Collectors Association, Stroudsburg, Pa. Born in Newark, he lived in East Hanover for 34 years before moving to Jim Thorpe in 1984.
Surviving are a daughter, Joan Brueche; a son, William; and three grandchildren.
Julia Danna
Julia Danna, 94, of Lincoln Park died March 2 in the Lincoln Park Renaissance Nursing Home.
Born in New York City, Miss Danna lived in Orange, Newark and Union for 48 years before moving to Lincoln Park five years ago.
Surviving is a sister, Esther Selitto.
Carol Schultz
Carol A. Schultz, 76, died Feb. 28 in Morristown Memorial Hospital.
Miss Schultz was an office manager with a private-investigation firm in Orange before retiring five years ago.
Prior to that, Miss Schultz was an office manager at Herlo Inc. in West Orange for more than 20 years.
Born in Orange, Miss Schultz moved to Randolph three years ago.
Jessie McCall
Jessie M. McCall, 86, of East Orange died March 1 in Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston.
Mrs. McCall was a clerical worker for the Essex County Probation Department in Newark for more than 20 years before retiring.
Born in Newark, she lived in East Orange for six years.
Willie Blakes
Willie Charles Blakes, 74, died March 3 in the Veterans Administration New Jersey Health Care System, East Orange.
Mr. Blakes was a warehouseman for Supermarkets General, Carteret, for more than 20 years before retiring. As an Army veteran, Mr. Blakes served during the Korean War.
Mr. Blakes also was a member of the Newark Masons. Born in Bryan, Texas, he lived in Newark before moving to East Orange in 1953.
Surviving are daughters, Janice and Patricia, and a grandchild.
Anita Iantosca
Anita Iantosca, 87, of Doylestown, Pa., a former Orange resident, died March 7 at home.
Mrs. Iantosca was a factory worker at Durkee Foods in Maplewood before retiring. Born in Orange, she lived in Maplewood for many years before moving to Doylestown.
Surviving are a son, George; a daughter, Joanne Gimson; a sister, Viola Caposino; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Concetta Romano
Concetta Romano, 95, a lifelong Orange resident, died March 7 in Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston.
Mrs. Romano was a sales associate for the Terry Shop in Orange many years ago.
Surviving are a son, Leo; daughters, JoAnn and Valerie; a sister, Frances Rizzo; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Julia Benes
Julia E. Benes, 91, of Orange died March 8 in Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston.
Mrs. Benes was an office manager with the Monroe Calculator Co. in Orange, where she worked for more than 20 years before retiring in 1978.
She was a member of the Third Order of St. Francis at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church.
Born in McKeesport, Pa., Mrs. Benes lived in Orange for more than 50 years.
