Stella Brostoski Lysko

Stella Brostoski Lysko, 93, of Elizabeth, died March 1 in Union Hospital. She was a member of the Senior Citizens in Kenilworth.

Born in Newark, she lived in Maplewood, South Orange, East Orange, Irvington, Hillside and Kenilworth before moving to Elizabeth 20 years ago.

Surviving are sons, Casimir Brostoski and Robert Brostoski; a sister, Tillie Sobka; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Rose T. Korski

Rose T. Korski, a lifelong Irvington resident, died March 2 at home.

Born in Newark, Ms. Korski is survived by a son, Raymond; daughters, Rose Marie and Tammy Korski; a sister, Millie Capko; brothers, William and John Formisano, and six grandchildren.

Viola Smith

Viola Smith, 102, died Friday in the Green Acres Manor, Toms River.

Born in Newark on Oct. 23, 1903, she lived in Irvington for many years before moving to Toms River 12 years ago.

Surviving are sisters, Pearl M. Smith and June Flynn.

Bernard J. Sipress

Bernard J. Sipress, 84, of Wilmington, Del., formerly of Irvington, died March 4. Mr. Sipress owned and operated Bernies Sport Shop in Irvington before retiring.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Jewish War Veterans of Elizabeth.

Born in Russia, he lived in Irvington before moving to Delaware.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred; a daughter, Leda Levine; brothers, Mannie and Harry; a sister, Ruth Rothstein, and three grandchildren.

William West

William West, 34, of Elizabeth, died Thursday in University Hospital, Newark. Mr. West was the head custodian for the Irvington Board of Education for nine years.

Born in Newark, he moved to Elizabeth several years ago.

Surviving are his wife, Dina; sons, Michael, Rashaun and Makell; a daughter, Makiyah; his mother, Deborah West; his father, William Hawkins; sisters, Angel and Audra, and his grandmother, Annie Mae West.

Agnes Cuscela

Agnes Cuscela, 89, of Hillside, died March 6 in Genesis ElderCare Center, Westfield.

Mrs. Cuscela was an office worker at Tessler and Weiss Jewelers in Union for 20 years before retiring 24 years ago.

She was a member of the Italian-American Club of Hillside and the Rosary Society at Christ the King Church.

Born in Newark, she lived in Irvington before moving to Hillside 37 years ago.

Surviving are husband, Daniel; sons, William and Dennis Liento; daughters, Frances Yorey, Nancy Dente and Elaine Patricco; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Sarah Telesco

Sarah Telesco, 76, of Brick, died March 6 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick. Mrs. Telesco was a volunteer at the Primary Learning Center at Brick.

Born in Newark, she lived in Irvington and Clark before moving to Brick eight years ago.

Surviving are Vito, her husband of 55 years; daughters, Catherine LePore and Maryann Rizzo; a son, William; a sister, Kathleen DeAngelis, and six grandchildren.

Paul Franklin Stahl

Paul Franklin Stahl, 86, of Varnamtown, N.C., died Feb. 5 in Grand Strand Hospital, Myrtle Beach, S.C. Mr. Stahl was employed by the Irvington school system for many years before retiring as supervisor of buildings and grounds and director of security in 1981.

A Navy veteran of World War II, he was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and AMVETS. He was active in Irvington and North Carolina.

Mr. Stahl was a 56-year member of the Free Masons, Shallotte Lodge 27 and Loyalty Lodge 33 F&AM of Union, as well as a member of the Robert Treat Council of the Boy Scouts of America of Essex County. He also was a youth leader of the Swim and Sports Club in Flanders.

Mr. Stahl served with the Special Police in Irvington for 20 years.

He sang with the Serendipity Singers of Brunswick County, N.C., and was a member of the Dixon Chapel United Methodist Church choir, Varnamtown.

Born in Nitro, W.Va., he lived in Irvington, Bonita Springs, Fla., and Greensboro, N.C., before moving to Varnamtown four years ago.

Surviving are a daughter, Joyce DeLucia; a son, Paul; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Gertrude M. Ackerman

Gertrude M. Ackerman, 95, of Irvington, died Monday in the Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge Division.

Mrs. Ackerman was a member of the Womens Guild and a Sunday School teacher, both at the First Reformed Church of Irvington.

Born in Newark, she lived in Irvington for most of her life.

Surviving are sons, Robert J.G. and Russell D.; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mildred E. Salahub

Mildred E. Salahub died March 3 at home. Mrs. Salahub was a manager for Woolworths department store in Irvington for 10 years until 1945.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, a member of the Parent-Teacher Association, a Cub Scout den mother and an assistant Girl Scout leader, all in Irvington.

Mrs. Salahub was also a health care volunteer at Fellowship Village in Liberty Corner for nine years.

Born in Newark, she lived in Irvington for 35 years and in Union for 11 years before moving to Liberty Corner nine years ago.

Surviving are a daughter, Janet Merlino; a son, John, and five grandchildren.

Elsie E. Ruckstuhl

Elsie E. Ruckstuhl, 94, of Maplewood died March 9 in Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston. Mrs. Ruckstuhl was a clerk/typist for the Prudential Insurance Co. in Newark before retiring many years ago.

Born in Newark, she lived in Irvington for 58 years before moving to Maplewood eight years ago.

Surviving are a son, William G., and two grandchildren.

Parke D. Gramm

Parke D. Gramm, 50, of Toms River died March 9 in Community Medical Center, Toms River.

Mr. Gramm was a firefighter with the 1st Platoon Fire Company of the Irvington Fire Department from 1983 to 1999. Mr. Gramm was a member of the Firemens Mutual Benevolent Association of Irvington.

Born in Summit, he lived in Irvington, Union and Brick before moving to Toms River in 2000.

Surviving are daughters, Chelsea and Margot; his stepfather, Nicholas Schmidt; brothers, Walter and Warren, and a sister, Marilyn Pacheco.

Julia Francesco

Julia Francesco, 89, of Allendale died March 10 in the Allendale Nursing Home.

Mrs. Francesco was a member of the Rosary Altar Society and the Senior Citizens at Immaculate Conception Church in Newark.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Francesco lived in Irvington, returned to Newark for many years and Bloomfield for four years before moving to Allendale 11 months ago.

Surviving are sons, Joseph, Robert, Michael and Rev. Richard Francesco, and seven grandchildren.

Bridget McGibney

Bridget McGibney, 85, of Irvington, died March 10 in the St. Barnabas Hospice at Newark, Beth Israel Medical Center.

Born in St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada, Mrs. McGibney came to Newark before moving to Irvington 25 years ago.

Surviving are daughters, Mary Thomson, Bernadette Woitkowski, Rita Ben-Asher and Doris; a son, Charles; a sister, Regina Bruce; a brother, Patrick Bruce; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Italo E. Perna

Italo E. Perna, 89, of Orange, died March 9 at home.

Mr. Perna was a quality control engineer for the Valcor Engineering Corp. in Springfield before retiring. Previously, he worked for Lionel in Irvington for several years.

An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Perna served under General George Patton with the 610th Tank Destroyer Battalion and saw action in Normandy, the Ardennes, the Rhineland and other areas of Central Europe.

He was a recipient of the Bronze Star, the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon and the American Theater Ribbon.

Mr. Perna was a former member of the Berkeley Knights and a former lodge master of the Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis.

Born in Newark, he lived in Orange for 44 years.

Surviving are sisters, Sophia Lamattina and Rosemarie Tango.

Louis Gonzalez

Louis Gonzalez, 71, of Roselle Park died March 11 at home. Mr. Gonzalez was a plumber for the Department of Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care Center at East Orange for 21 years before retiring five years ago. Earlier, he was a plumber for Bornstein and Son in Irvington for 11 years.

Born in Newark, Mr. Gonzalez moved to Roselle Park 40 years ago.

Surviving are sons, John, Richard, Robert and Gregory; a sister, Terry Rodriguez, and a grandchild.
