Arthur Harris
Arthur Harris, 74, of East Orange died Feb. 20 in the Veterans Administration New Jersey Health Care System, East Orange.
Mr. Harris owned and operated A. Harris Plumbing and Electrical, East Orange, for more than 30 years before retiring. Previously, he was a window cleaner and a short-order cook.
Also known as “Mr. Karate,” Mr. Harris was a third-degree black belt who trained in karate for 30 years. A sensei, he owned and operated five karate schools in New Jersey.
An Army veteran, Mr. Harris served during the Korean War. Born in Tennille, Ga., he moved to East Orange in 1953. He also was a member of the Newark Knights Motorcycle Club.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn; daughters, Anna Mitchell, Patricia and Tracey Harris and Audrey Harris-Cruz; a son, Lawrence; a sister, Doris Jackson; and eight grandchildren.
Frank Fehn Sr.
Frank J. Fehn Sr. of Denville, a former East Orange police officer, died Feb. 24 at home.
Mr. Fehn was a police officer with the city of East Orange for 30 years before retiring as a lieutenant in 1980.
A Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Fehn was a medical corpsman. Born in Newark, he lived in East Orange before moving to Denville 34 years ago.
Surviving are Louise, his wife of 38 years; a daughter, Patricia; a son, Frank Jr.; a sister, Margaret Meehan; and six grandchildren.
Audrey Rosania
Audrey Rosania, 77, of Loganville, Ga., a former Orange resident, died Feb. 24 in the Southern Plantation Assisted Living, Loganville.
Mrs. Rosania was an executive secretary with the New York Life Insurance Co., East Orange, before retiring in 1985.
Mrs. Rosania also taught religion classes at St. John the Evangelist Church, Orange.
Born in Orange, Mrs. Rosania lived in West Orange and Lakewood before moving to Loganville.
Surviving are sons, Frank and Richard; sisters, Edna Beboey and Joan Muck; and a grandchild.
Mildred Reynolds
Mildred Julian Reynolds, 97, of Maplewood died Feb. 25 in Overlook Hospital, Summit.
Mrs. Reynolds was a teacher at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, Orange, for eight years before retiring in 1987. Previously, she was a teacher in the West Orange school system for 36 years.
After retirement, Mrs. Reynolds was a remedial-writing tutor at Bloomfield College for several years.
Mrs. Reynolds was a 1955 graduate of the New Jersey State Teachers College.
Born in Newark, Mrs. Reynolds lived in South Orange and East Orange before moving to Maplewood eight months ago.
Surviving are a daughter, Judy Green; sisters, Rose Julian and Helen Waterbor; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Carl Pfeiffer
Carl J. “Sparky” Pfeiffer, 92, of Island Heights died Feb. 25 in Community Medical Center, Toms River.
Mr. Pfeiffer was a foreman with the East Orange Shade Tree Commission before retiring many years ago. In the 1930s, he worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps.
An Army veteran, Mr. Pfeiffer served during World War II.
While living in East Orange, Mr. Pfeiffer designed and built fresh-flower floats that represented the city in holiday parades in the area. Later, in Island Heights, he was known in the community for the hand-fashioned Christmas displays that he displayed at his home on Ocean Avenue.
Born in Newark, Mr. Pfeiffer lived in East Orange before moving to Island Heights many years ago.
Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Halpern, Carleen and Janet; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Effie Marshall
Effie Marshall, 97, a lifelong East Orange resident, died March 2 at home.
Mrs. Marshall was the owner of Effie’s Boutique in East Orange before retiring. She also was a real-estate broker and notary public.
Mrs. Marshall was a volunteer in the thrift shop at East Orange General Hospital and former vice president of the hospital auxiliary. She also was a volunteer for the United Way, DYFS Grandparents, Hospice and the American Association of Retired Persons.
She was a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the National Council of Negro Women of the Oranges and the Senior Citizens Group of East Orange.
Surviving are a daughter, Beverly Hendrick; a sister, Eloise Thompson; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Delphine Johnson
Delphine Hester Johnson, 82, of Orange died Feb. 22 in East Orange General Hospital.
Mrs. Johnson was an elementary- and special-education teacher at the Queen Street High School and Beaufort Elementary School, both in Beaufort, N.C., for more than 30 years before retiring in 1977.
She recently started Delphine’s Workshop, where she taught residents at the White House Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Orange.
Mrs. Johnson received her bachelor’s degree from the former Fayetteville State Teachers College, now Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville, N.C., and her master’s degree from East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Household of Ruth.
Born in Morehead City, N.C., Mrs. Johnson lived in West Orange before moving to Orange in 2000.
Surviving are a daughter, Amy Johnson-Ferdinand; and a grandchild.
Thomas Seymour
Thomas M. Seymour, 87, of Orange died Feb. 28 in Overlook Hospital, Summit.
Mr. Seymour was employed by Public Service Electric and Gas, Newark and West Orange, for 30 years before retiring in 1979.
He served in the Army during peacetime and in the Navy during World War II. Mr. Seymour was a life member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks lodge in Orange.
Born in Newark, Mr. Seymour lived in Orange for many years.
Surviving are a son, Fred Nuse; a daughter, Joan Failing; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Linda Goba
Linda Goba, 50, of East Orange died Feb. 28 in East Orange General Hospital.
Miss Goba was an administrative assistant with the New Jersey State Board of Opticians, Newark, for more than 25 years and was due to retire this month.
She was a graduate of the Susan Paylor Business School, Newark. Born in Summit, Miss Goba lived in East Orange for more than 20 years.
Surviving are sisters, Dolly Ann Kirkland and Gloria Burrus; and brothers, James Edwards, and Ronald and Richard Dural Islam Burrus.
Maria Ferdinandi
Maria Ferdinandi, 81, of Edison died Feb. 20 in JFK Medical Center, Edison.
Born in Italy, Mrs. Ferdinandi lived in Newark and Irvington before moving to Edison 15 years ago.
Surviving are a daughter, Ivana Giona; a son, Rino; a brother, Mario Cifu; a sister, Tommasina Cifu; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Josephine R. Gartling
Josephine R. Gartling, 78, of Kenilworth died Feb. 17 at home.
Mrs. Gartling was a receptionist for eight years at the American Red Cross in Elizabeth before retiring. Before that, she was a salesperson at Macys Department Store, Newark, for 20 years.
Born in Newark, she lived in Irvington for 18 years before moving to Kenilworth 47 years ago.
Surviving are sons, Alan Best and Dan Gartling; a daughter, Pam Paquette; a brother, Michael Pascale; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Ollie Mae Barris
Ollie Mae Barris, 94, of Hillside died Feb. 21 in Cranford Health and Extended Care.
Born in Pinesburg, S.C., Mrs. Barris lived in Irvington before moving to Hillside 11 years ago.
Surviving are a son, Rudy Roberts; a daughter, Fay Komonieski; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Jo-Ann Smaracko
Jo-Ann Smaracko, 50, of West Greenwich, R.I., a native of New Jersey, died here Jan. 22 in Westerly Hospital.
Ms. Smaracko was a field service engineer with General Electric Corp. Health Care Services for the past 15 years.
Born in Newark, N.J., she lived in Irvington, N.J., and Wharton, N.J., before moving to West Greenwich five years ago.
Surviving are her partner, Beth Richmond, and a brother, Michael Smaracko.
Anna M. Heller
Mrs. Anna M. Heller, 90, of Roselle Park died Feb. 23 in Union Hospital, Union.
Mrs. Heller was a member of the Roselle Park Senior Citizens.
Born in Newark, she lived in Irvington before moving to Roselle Park 48 years ago.
Surviving are sons, Charles Jr., William and Joseph; a daughter, Anna Adams; brothers, William, Edward and John McGrady; a sister, Margaret Lynch; 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
