Bernard F. Malizia
Bernard F. Malizia, 79, a lifelong resident of Nutley, died Feb. 20 at home.
Mr. Malizia owned and managed North Jersey Paint in Wallington and Dux Paint in Lodi for many years before retiring in 1993.
He served in the Navy during World War II, and was a member of the Disabled Veterans Commanders Club and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Stuart E. Edgar Post 493 in Nutley.
He was also a member of the Knoll Country Club in Boonton and the Glen Ridge Country Club.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Jean; daughters, Mary Del Negro, Susan, Jane Della Peruti and Bernadette Malizia Barron; a son, Louis B.; a sister, Marilyn Schlegel; and 11 grandchildren.
Thelma A. Hollahan
Mrs. Thelma A. Hollahan, 86, of Belleville died Feb. 19 in Clara Maass Medical Center, Belleville.
Born in Preston Township, Wayne County, Pa., she lived in Newark before moving to Belleville 21 years ago.
Mrs. Hollahan was an assembler at the Tung-Sol Corp. in Bloomfield for 10 years before retiring 24 years ago. Earlier, she worked for the Walter Kidde Co., Belleville.
She was a member of the Friendly Visitors of Belleville and a volunteer at the food pantry at Holy Family Church.
Surviving are stepdaughters, Constance Giardina and June Hollahan; a sister, Virginia Skeirik; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Ronald Mendoza
Ronald Mendoza, 18, of Nutley died Feb. 16 in Riverside, Calif.
Born in Quezon City, Philippines, he lived in Nutley for many years.
Mr. Mendoza was a creative writing student at the University of California, Riverside.
A 2005 graduate of Nutley High School, he was a clarinet player for the Nutley High School band.
Surviving are his parents, Virgilio and Runa Mendoza; brothers, Paolo and Sean Ray, and his grandmothers, Rosita Sena and Milagros Mendoza.
Hugh M. Tole
Hugh M. Tole, 68, of Nutley died Feb. 24 at home.
Born in Bridgeport, Conn., he lived in Nutley for 45 years.
Mr. Tole was an accountant for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Newark, before retiring five years ago. Previously, he worked for Home Life Insurance Co. in New York City, for 20 years.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Mary’s Council, Nutley, and a lector at St. Mary’s Church, Nutley.
Norma C. Bland
Norma L. Bland, 51, of Montclair died Jan. 2 in Atlantic City. She was a school nurse, health educator and guidance counselor for the Newark Board of Education until 1993.
She received a nursing degree from the Lincoln School for Nurses in New York City, a bachelors degree from New Jersey City University and a master’s degree from Kean University.
A member of the Urban League Guild of Essex County, Mrs. Bland was a member of the North Jersey chapter of Jack and Jill and the Friends of the Newark Community School of the Arts as well as a trustee of the school.
She also belonged to the NAACP, the Epicureans Club of Essex County, the Twelve and One Bridge Club and the St. Monica’s Guild at Trinity St. Philips Cathedral.
Born in Lansing, Mich., Mrs. Bland lived in Newark and Maplewood before moving to Montclair several years ago.
Surviving are a son, Richard L. Jr.; a daughter, Rhonda Bland-Carter; a brother, J. Raymond Lett; and five grandchildren.
Joan Snyder
Joan Snyder, 86, of Andover Township died Jan. 4 in the Barn Hill Care Center, Newton.
Mrs. Snyder was assistant vice president of Midlantic National Bank in West Orange, where she worked for 30 years before retiring in 1987.
She graduated from the London School of Economics and Seton Hall University, South Orange.
A member of the vestry and a volunteer at St. Andrew and Holy Communion Episcopal Church in South Orange, Mrs. Snyder was a ruling elder of the First Presbyterian Church of South Orange. She was a regular volunteer for the Orange YWCA, Batsto Village in Burlington County and the United Way.
Born in Hull, England, Mrs. Snyder survived the London Blitz during World War II.
She lived in South Orange for many years before moving to Andover Township.
Surviving are sons, Eric and Owen; a daughter, Mara, and five grandchildren.
Robert Martin Read
Robert Martin Read, 90, of Maplewood died Dec. 28 at home.
An attorney, he served as chairman of the Civil Defense in Plainfield and was a member of the Plainfield Common Council. He retired eight years ago.
He was a member and former president of the Westfield Rotary Club.
A Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific area as the commanding officer of the USS LSM 218.
Mr. Read was a member of the New York and New Jersey Bar associations and served as president of the Union County and Plainfield Bar associations.
Mr. Read was a graduate of Fordham University and Fordham Law School.
Born in Elizabeth, he moved to Maplewood many years ago.
Surviving are a daughter, Pamela; sons, Robert and David; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Robert L. Tannen
Robert L. Tannen, 61, of South Orange died Jan. 1 at home. He was a nationwide account executive for MachineTools.com, a Michigan-based equipment supply distributor, since 2004.
Earlier, he published the Used Equipment Directory in Jersey City. He also worked for trade associations in the Washington, D.C., area, representing national machinery dealers, national dry cleaners and natural gas trade associations.
A graduate of the Virginia Military Institute in 1967, Mr. Tannen served as a tank platoon commander in the Army’s 4th Armored Division on the German-Czech border during the armed standoff during the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968.
He was a Pop Warner football coach and involved with the South Orange Recreation Department’s Little League in coaching.
Mr. Tannen and his wife, Mary Jane, were Pre-Cana counselors at Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
Born in Panama City, Fla., he lived in Georgia, Florida, Virginia, New Mexico, Indiana and Naples, Italy, as a child of the late Lt. Col. Martin R. Tannen. He later lived in Arlington, Va., Fairfax, Va., and Silver Spring, Md., before moving to South Orange in 1982.
Also surviving are sons, Martin J. and Benjamin; a daughter, Amanda J.; a brother, Terrell, and three grandchildren.
Anne Marie Nolan
Anne Marie Hughes Nolan, 75 of South Orange died Jan. 5 at Overlook Hospital, Summit.
She was a member of the Rosary Society of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, South Orange.
Born in Jersey city she lived in South Orange for 40 year.
Survived by her husband Ezra L. Nolan; a daughter Anne Marie Nolan Rizzo.
Roger MacDonald,
Roger Finley MacDonald, Jr., 61, of Southampton, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 24 at home.
Born in Orange he spent most of his youth in graduating from Columbia High in 1962.
In 1963, Roger enlisted in the United States Air Force and, eventually retired from the Air Force 1985, after serving 22 years.
During his Air Force career, Roger served in Ohio, Philippine Islands, New Mexico, South Vietnam, West Berlin, Germany and at McGuire AFB, NJ, where he was a C-141 Flight Engineer and instructor at the NCO Academy.
His military honors include the Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Air Force Achievement Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Three bronze services stars, and the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with palm.
Following his military career, Roger was a 1990 cum Laude graduate of Trenton State College, now known as The College of New Jersey, with a degree in Business Education.
He was the student Services Coordinator for the NJ National Guard Youth Challenge Program on Ft. Dix, where he was able to help and educate disadvantaged teens.
He also taught for the Management Institute at Rowan University.Roger was a parishioner at St. Mary of the Lakes RCC in Medford. He was a member of the choir, and a member and past commodore of the Cooper River Yacht Club in Collingswood, New Jersey.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Darvin Bainbridge-MacDonald; daughter and sons-in-law, Michelle E. and Randy Bendell, Pamela G. and Richard Megill; his mother Marjorie M. MacDonald; three grandsons; donovan, Allston, and Brennan Megill; two brothers, Bruce and charles Macdonald; three sisters-in-laws, Kay, Jean, Mary MacDonald; and two nieces and two nephews.
Elayne Bork
Elayne Bork, 78, of Pittstown died Jan. 2 in the Country Arch Health Care Center, Union Township.
Mrs. Bork was a secretary with the Irvington Board of Education before retiring. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post in Irvington. Born in Irvington, Mrs. Bork lived in Toms River before moving to Pittstown.
Surviving are a daughter, Barbara; sons, George and Jeff; a sister, Janet Ungerer; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Anita Weidner
Anita Weidner, 102, of Westfield died Jan. 5 in Union Hospital.
Mrs. Weidner was a sales associate at Bamberger’s department store in Newark for many years before retiring many years ago.
Born in New York City on April 16, 1903, she lived in Newark, Maplewood, Basking Ridge and Union before moving to Westfield in 2004.
