William F. Andrews
Toms River resident William F. Andrews passed away Sunday, Feb. 18 at Sunnyside Manor in Manasquan. He leaves behind many loved ones, including family in Wall and Spring Lake.
He was 92 years old.
William was a credit manager for Spring Mills in New York City. He was a World War II veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. William was an avid golfer and an accomplished guitarist. He and his brothers, Stephen Andrews SJ and Daniel Andrews, performed on WMCA radio prior to World War II.
William was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family. Born and raised in Greenwich Village, N.Y., he moved to Ridgefield in 1963 and resided there for 31 years before moving to Toms River in 1994.
William is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dorothy Weir Andrews, of Toms River. He is also survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert and Susan O’Dea Andrews of Wall, William Andrews Jr. of Spring Lake, and Stephen and Anne Jerene Andrews of Rockaway; five grandchildren, Matthew, Elizabeth, Emily, Corrine and Allison.
Arrangements are under the direction of Orender Family Home for Funerals in Manasquan. Burial will be private.

Kathleen Gorecke
Wall resident Kathleen Gorecke died Friday, Feb. 23 at Neptune Rehabilitation and Care Center in Neptune.
She was 90 years old.
Mrs. Gorecke was a dining room manager for Deal Golf and Country Club in Deal for 20 years, before retiring in 1986. Born in Harrison, she lived in Kearny before moving to the shore area in 1946.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Gorecke, in 1967.
Surviving are two sons, George A. Gorecke of Wall and Richard J. Gorecke of Florida; two daughters, Carole G. Henry of Florida and Linda L. Shafto of Florida; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
There will be no calling hours. A private cremation will be at the convenience of the family. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Francioni, Taylor and Lopez Funeral Home, 1200 10th Ave. at Atkins Avenue in Neptune, is in charge of the arrangements.
Mark Salaway
Brielle resident Mark Salaway died on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at Monmouth Medical Center after an extended illness.
Born August 8, 1961 in Monmouth, Ill., he lived the early part of his life in the Midwest attending Monmouth High School and Augustana College. After graduating in 1983, he began his long road in retail after taking a job at Von Maur, a regional department store chain based in Davenport, Iowa, where he eventually rose to the position of general merchandise manager over his 10 year employment.
After a brief time of serving as the vice-president and merchandise manager for Hess Bros. of Allentown, Pa., Mr. Salaway was appointed as executive vice-president of Reynolds Stores in 1994. He eventually became the CEO and the owner of the Reynolds chain.
Mark Salaway was married to his wife, Becky, for 23 years after being high school sweethearts. Mark had many great gifts and joys in life. He began running in grade school and continued this through high school and college. After college, he continued running and went on to complete several marathons.
He spent much of his free time being a dad and enjoying his time with his kids and their activities. He loved playing a game of golf with his brothers and his cousin, Kirk, a beer with his friends and a game of basketball with the guys in Brielle. Those who knew him best knew his love for life and his ability to make friends with all in the room.
Surviving are his wife, Rebecca, and his three children, Thom, 18, Elizabeth, 16, and Lillianne, 8, of Brielle; brothers Jeff Salaway of Verona, Wis. and Mike Salaway of Bloomington, Ill.; mother Margery Heaton Clarke and her husband Denzil Clarke of Lady Lake, Fla.; and extended family Dale and Marilyn Heaton Bugbee Oliver and Marcine Heaton Wilson, both of Cadiz, Ky., Kyrn Leyden of Iowa City, Iowa, and Kirk Wilson of Davenport, Iowa.
Funeral services were held at O’Brien Funeral Home on Burnt Tavern Road in Brick. Visitation was held on Sunday, Feb. 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. with the funeral service held at the O’Brien Funeral Home on Monday, Feb. 26 at 11 a.m.
Two types of memorials will be available to honor Mark’s memory. Fred’s Team is a race which benefits the Aubrey Fund for Pediatric Cancer Research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

Daniel V. Will
Toms River resident Daniel V. Will, formerly of Wall, died Sunday after a battle with cancer.
He was 65 years old.
Born in rural Delphos, Ohio, he initially heard God’s call and went through several years of training in St. Meinrad’s Roman Catholic Seminary. Ultimately, the desire for family life led him to modify his vocation, spending his life as a husband and father, serving the disabled of New Jersey.
He earned a master’s of education at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he met his wife. He worked for the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation for 36 years as counselor, supervisor, manager and ultimately Chief of Rehab Facilities for 15 years until his retirement in 2004.
He was known for his utmost integrity and compassion. A colleague described him on his retirement as “never boastful and never once looking for recognition, but being grateful for getting the job done. He was always willing to help a colleague or support his staff, even when he didn’t agree. His priority was always the people he served.”
Mr. Will was a great husband, father, grandfather, brother, relative, and friend. He was never happier than when he was playing with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife K. Sheila of Toms River; sisters Mary E. Will of Delphos, Ohio and Sr. Victora Will S.N.D. of Jacksonville, Fla.; children Patricia and Daniel and their families, and three grandchildren, Daniel, Salvatore, and Alexandra.
There was a viewing held yesterday, Wednesday, Feb. 28 at the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
A funeral mass will be at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Asbury Park at 10 a.m. today.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be mde to Amigos de Jesus, 118 Woodland Ave., Malvern, PA 19355, an organization giving love, hope and homes to impoverished children in Honduras.
Oscar C. Olsen, Jr.
Manasquan resident Oscar C. Olsen, Jr. died Monday, Feb. 26 at Brick Medical Center in Brocktown.
He was 80 years old.
Mr. Olsen was a Fire Captain for the Fort Monmouth Fire Department in Eatontown, before his retirement many years ago. He was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and Fire Co. #2, both of Manasquan, the Exempt Firemen of Point Pleasant Beach, the Point Pleasant Beach First Aid Squad, the Old Guard of Bricktown and Ocean Lodge #89 F and A.M. of Spring Lake Heights.
He was a graduate of Manasquan High School and the University of West Virginia where he received the Peter Blackson Roetzel Football Award in 1943. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in WW II.
Born in Spring Lake Heights, Mr. Will lived most of his life in Manasquan.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Parker and a brother Thomas of Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Visitation will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Armitage Funeral Home on Highway 34 in Wall Township.
Masonic services will be held at 8:00 p.m.
Religious services will be tomorrow, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home, with interment in Atlantic View cemetery in Manasquan.
Thomas McDonough
Neptune City resident Thomas E. “Chief” McDonough passed away at home in Neptune City with his family by his side on Sunday, Feb. 25. He will be laid to rest in Wall.
Tom was born and raised in Hoboken. He moved to Jersey City where he raised his family with his wife, Joan, and retired to Neptune City in 1993.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served as a Signalman in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters and received an Honorable Discharge in May 1946.
He was appointed to the Hoboken Police Department as a Patrolman in June 1946 at the age of 19 where he proudly worked alongside his father, William “Big Bill” McDonough. In 1950, he was appointed to the Hudson County Boulevard Police Department which later merged with the Hudson County Police Department.
He rose through the ranks and in 1972 was promoted to Chief of Police, the rank he held until his retirement in 1980. Subsequent to that he was employed in the private sector as Manager of Internal Security by the Depository Trust Company, New York City and retired at age 66.
Second to none was the love he shared with his wife, Joan, his children and grandchildren. Everyday was a great day in Tom’s life. He was passionate about all things Notre Dame, his Irish heritage, the beach, music and reading.
He was a historian of boxing and he most enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events. Throughout his life and career, Tom touched people young and old. He usually had a story that could brighten anyone’s day.
Although Tom was a second cousin to former Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Gene Tunney, he was considered by many in boxing circles as a dead ringer for Tunney’s ring adversary Jack Dempsey. In 1957, Tom was considered to play the part of Jack Dempsey in a movie about Dempsey’s life. The movie was never made due to the contractual differences with Dempsey’s handlers.
He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Roman Catholic Church where he also served as an usher. He was the past President of the Hoboken Police Mutual Aid Society, past President Hudson County Boulevard Police PBA, past President of Hudson County Police Chiefs Association and past President of St. Peter’s Prep Fathers Club.
He was a member of New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police and served on the Hoboken St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. He was a member of the Notre Dame Club of the Jersey Shore and in 2001 he received the Award of the Year from the Club for his many years of loyal dedication to Notre Dame and to the ideals for which the University stands.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Joan [nee] Diercks McDonough; a son Thomas W. and his wife Monica; a son William and his wife Lisa; and a daughter Patrice and her husband Robert Smith; and five adoring grandchildren, William, Kayla and Allyson McDonough and Robert and Kiran Smith.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at 10:45 a.m. from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy 35 at New Bedford Road in Wall, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s RC Church in Avon by the Sea.
Visitation will be today from 3 to 9 p.m. Interment is at St. Anne’s cemetery in Wall.
Rev. Thomas Convery
Bristol, R.I. resident Reverand Thomas L. Convery, S.S.C. of the Columban Fathers Retirement Center died Friday, Feb. 23 at the Silver Creek Manor in Bristol, R.I. Rev. Convery celebrated the holy mass at St. Catharines Church in Spring Lake for many years.
He was 92 years old.
Born in Trenton, a son of the late William J. and Mary [Waldron] Convery, he had been a resident of Bristol since 1994. Father Convery was a Roman Catholic Priest for 66 years with the Missionary Society of St. Columban, serving the Church in the Philippines for the major part of his priesthood.
He was ordained to the Priesthood on December 21, 1940 at SS. Peter and Paul Cathedral in Providence. During his years in the Philippines, he was a Pastor, Educator, Superior, Vicar General, Founding Immaculate Conception Academy in Zambales and Columban College in Olongapo City and served as the Superintendent of Catholic Schools in Zambales and as the auxiliary Chaplain at the US Naval Base in Subic during the 1960’s.
After returning to the United States in 1972, he served his order as Superior, Vocational Director, Chaplain and doing Pastoral work, continuing during these last few years to his fellow patients at Silver Creek Manor.
He is survived by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, William J., Vincent and Robert Convery; and three sisters, Mary Barrett, Catherine Mahan and Anne Engemann.
Relatives and Friends were invited to attend a Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of the Columban Fathers Retirement Center in Bristol, R.I.
Burial followed in Gate of Heaven cemetery in East Providence, R.I. Visiting hours were Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Columban Fathers, for their continued work in the Philippines, 65 Ferry Road, Bristol, RI 02809.
Anita McCaffery
Spring Lake resident Anita Marie McCaffery died on Tuesday, April 8 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, in Neptune.
She was predeceased by her husband, James, in 2006. Surviving are her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy Ann and Stephen Stover; two sisters-in-law, Mary Rowe and Jane Callighan; and six nieces.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today at 11 a.m. at St. Catharine’s RC Church, in Spring Lake. Entombment will be at St. Catharine’s cemetery, Wall.
Tootie “Mac” Pharo
Point Pleasant resident Tootie “Mac” Pharo, whose daughter resides in Manasquan, died Thursday, April 3 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
She was 86 years old.
Hired in 1953, she was still employed by the Point Pleasant Board of Education as a secretary to the Superintendent of Schools.
She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Capt. Eagle Pharo, and her dog, Trouble.
She is survived by her three children, daughter Candy and husband Walter Campbell, of Brick, son Michael Pharo and Louise Ebert, of Williamsburg, Va., and daughter Gina Pharo, Manasquan. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Carrie Campbell, of Point Pleasant, Kelly Wilson, of Brick, Brett Campbell, of Brick, Adam Pharo, of Point Pleasant, Ryan Pharo, of Manasquan, and Taylor Pharo, of Norfolk, Va., in addition to five great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in her name to the Jersey Shore Animal Shelter, Brick Boulevard, Brick.
Per her request, no funeral services were held.
Cremation was handled by Van Hise and Callagan Funeral Home, Point Pleasant.
