Mary E. Newman
Manasquan resident Mary E. Newman died Saturday, Jan. 27 in Bethany Village in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
Born in Philadelphia, Mary lived in Manasquan all her life. Mary was a member of the St. Denis Altar Rosary Society, where she was a past president, and she was a member and past Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughters of America Court St. Denis in Manasquan.
Mary was also a member of the Manasquan AARP.
She was a 1931 graduate of St. Rose High School, and graduated from the Monmouth Medical Center School of Nursing, Long Branch.
Mary was also a nurse serving in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II and during the Korean War. She served in many overseas tours during these two wars, including Germany, the Philippines and Korea. She retired from the Army Nurse Corps in 1963 with the rank of major.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Benjamin and Rose Newman; and her three brothers, James E. Newman, John J. Newman, and George B. Newman.
She is survived by her two brothers, Thomas U. Newman of Manasquan, Charles F. Newman and his wife Dora of West Windsor; two sisters, Josephine J. O’Gibney and her husband James of Lakewood, and Catherine R. Matey of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews.
O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of arrangements. Interment was at St. Catharine’s cemetery, Wall.

Albert Michael Scara Sr.
Wall Township resident Albert Michael Scara Sr. died Tuesday, Jan. 30 at Sunrise Assisted Living, Wall.
He was 79 years old.
Capt. Scara spent his entire career as a Merchant Marine. He was employed by Merit Chapman and Scott Salvage Company before he enlisted in the USCG Merchant Marines in 1943 at the age of 16. During his service in World War II, he received the Merchant Marine Emblem, The Atlantic War Zone Bar, The Pacific War Zone Bar, and the Victory Medal. In 2003, he received the New Jersey Distinguished service Medal from former Gov. James McGreevey.
Following his military service, he was employed briefly by W.R. Grace Lines. He then began a 30-year career with Exxon Corporation formerly known as Standard Oil of New Jersey, Esso and Humble Oil and Refining Co.
Captain Scara served as a second mate on the historic maiden voyage of the SS Manhattan through the Northwest Passage.
He was a self-taught hard working man who received his third mate’s license at the age of 19, and attained his master’s license of any tonnage ship upon any ocean eight times over his long career. After leaving Exxon in 1975, he served as a port captain for several companies including ARCO, Marine Transport Lines, Cove Shipping and Enron Corporation.
He loved the outdoors, gardening, the New York Yankees, and going to Monmouth Park. One of his greatest passions was running. He participated in most Monmouth County road races, and by far, his favorite was the Spring Lake 5-Mile Run. He was a member of the Jersey Shore Running Club, and in 1999, he participated in the National Senior Games Senior Olympics in Orlando, Fla.
He was a member of the Dennis A. Roland Chapter of the American Merchant Marine Veterans and also participated in the Milken Family Foundation [MUSST] Program at the HW Mountz School in Spring Lake.
He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia A. Durkin Scara, in 1975, and by his second wife, Marion E. Armstrong Scara, in 2001.
Surviving are his sons, Albert Michael Jr. of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Robert Joseph, and Michael John and his wife Judith of Westlake Village, Calif.; a daughter, Susan Margaret Koch and her husband Kenneth; and a stepdaughter, Donna Zibrin and her husband Michael of Middletown.
He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren Jenna, Kyle, Albert III, Austin, Patrick, Jacob, Lindsay, Kenneth, Danielle and Michael; as well as two great-grandchildren Rea and Lauren.
Visiting is Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Route 35 at New Bedford Road in Wall.
The service will begin Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 9:30 a.m. at St. Margaret’s Roman Catholic Church in Spring Lake.
Burial will be at St. Catharine’s cemetery, Wall.

Patrick John Haverstick
Manasquan resident Patrick John Haverstick died on Sunday, Jan. 28.
He was 53 years old.
Born in Plainfield, he lived his formative years in Middlesex and summered in Manasquan with his eight brothers and sisters. He lived in Las Vegas and Reno, Nev., before returning to Manasquan in 1985.
Stix, as he was fondly known, was a kind, funny, loving, considerate and gentle man, who was loved by anyone lucky enough to know him. His love for family was extraordinary, and the love of his many dear friends admirable.
Mr. Haverstick enjoyed life to its fullest with fishing, golf, bodysurfing, volleyball, laughing and many special times on “Pat’s Porch” just being Duke.
He had a lifelong career in the food and beverage Industry beginning in Miami and coming full circle to beverage manager at the Spring Lake Golf and Country Club.
Mr. Haverstick was predeceased by his father, John Haverstick; his infant daughter, Shannon; Big Nance; and dear nephew Jack Parlo Jr.
Surviving are his mother, Helen Haverstick of Spring Lake Heights; his son, Shane Haverstick and his fiancee Niki Tomas of Norwalk, Conn.; his former wife, Susan, of Winder, Ga.; five sisters, Nancy Hamilton of Long Beach Island and her husband Ray, Candy Dice of Wall Township, Gale Parlo and her husband Jack of Atlanta, Jill Donovan and her fiance Gordon of Bridgewater, Christine Bozzomo and her husband Frank of Middlesex; three brothers, John of Mexico, N.Y., Michael, his identical twin, and his wife Patricia of Wall Township, and Richard and his wife Vicki of Bridgewater; an uncle, Albert Filmanski of Spring Lake, Fla.; and adored nieces and nephews Kellie, Dana, Liz, Kim, Craig, Paige, Jamie, Mikey, Taylor, Jordan, Shannon, Bridget, Kelsey, Megan, Nicole, Joey, Frankie, Sara and MacKenzie and their children.
Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, was in charge of arrangements. Interment was private.

Edward C. Convery
Brielle resident Edward C. Convery died Monday, Jan. 29 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
He was 74 years old.
Born in Bloomfield, he has resided in Brielle for 41 years.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1954 aboard the USS Walke.
Mr. Convery worked for the former Newark Evening News selling advertising. He then worked as a civilian firefighter at Navy Lakehurst. He went to work for H.T. Hall & Son in Manasquan as a memorialist, and had been employed there since 1973.
Mr. Convery was a member of the Brielle Fire Company, where he served as chief, trustee, captain of the fire police, and secretary of the relief association. He was also a former member of the Brielle First Aid Squad.
He was a member of the Juvenile Conference Committee in Brielle, and the United Methodist Church in Manasquan.
Mr. Convery is survived by his wife of 41 years, Jeanne Height Convery; his daughters, Jennifer Ford and her companion Christopher Pruett of Barnegat, Mary van der Net and her husband Roland van der Net of Kennesaw, Ga.; his brothers, William Convery of Fanwood and George Convery of San Diego; his grandchildren, Olivia Ford, Michael Ford and Rosemary van der Net; and 12 nieces and nephews.
A funeral service, with full fire department honors, will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan.
Visitation will be Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Martha T. “Pat” O’Hearn
Spring Lake resident Martha T. “Pat” O’Hearn died Sunday, Aug. 27 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
She was 79 years old.
Mrs. O’Hearn was a homemaker and devoted mother to her children. A graduate of Columbia High School, Maplewood, she was an avid knitter and enjoyed completing The New York Times crossword puzzles.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., she had lived in Maplewood, and then in Chatham before moving to Spring Lake in 1958.
She was predeceased by her husband, Paul T. O’Hearn, and her canine companion, Bailey.
Surviving are her children, James P. and Susan O’Hearn, Landaff, N.H., Roxanne O’Hearn and her husband, James Anderson of Macungie, Pa., Suzanne O’Hearn and Deborah Gates-Kane of Howell, Kristine and Hugh Dier, Wall, and Marianne and Michael Stoll of Spring Lake Heights; and three grandchildren, Nicole Dier, and Michael and Mae Stoll.
O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township, handled the arrangements. Interment was at St. Catharine’s cemetery, Wall.

Eleanore Murphy
Spring Lake resident Eleanore Murphy died Saturday, Aug. 26 in Shorrock Garden Nursing Home, Brick.
She was 85 years old.
Mrs. Murphy was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Catharine’s-St. Margaret’s Roman Catholic Church in Spring Lake. Born in Brooklyn, she moved to Manalapan in 1969 before moving to Spring Lake in 1986.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Karen Murphy of Howell, in 1985.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, James C. Murphy; her sons, James P. of Baltimore, Daniel J. of Honesdale, Pa., and a daughter, Gail Ann Dunn of Toms River. She also leaves eight grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.
O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township, handled the arrangements. Interment was at St. Mary’s of the Lake cemetery, Lakewood.

Cecil P. Haslam
Sea Girt resident Cecil P. Haslam died Sunday, Aug. 27 in Sunnyside Manor, Wall Township.
He was 90 years old.
Mr. Haslam had been employed as an estimator for the Newark Wire Cloth Co., Newark, before his retirement. He was an active member of St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church, Sea Girt and a member of the Holy Name Society and had served as an usher.
Born in Belleville, he had lived in Sea Girt for over the past 45 years. He was also a veteran of the US Army.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Margaret Toohey Haslam, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service is today at 8:45 a.m. from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church, Sea Girt. Interment will be at St. Catharine’s cemetery, Wall.
Madelyn Aumack
Ocean Grove resident Madelyn Aumack, formerly of Belmar, died Saturday, Aug. 26 in Manor by the Sea.
She was 104 years old.
Born in Manalapan, she lived there until moving to Belmar in 1960. She worked as a health aide for the Visiting Homemaker Service. Miss Aumack was a member of the Belmar Presbyterian Church and a member of the D.A.R. of Monmouth County for over 50 years.
Surviving are her niece, Marilyn Hulse, North Carolina, a grandniece, Holly Brokow of North Carolina, two grandnephews, William Hulse of Florida, and Christopher Aumack, Brick; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. George [Olive] Aumack, Florida.
Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar, handled the arrangements. Interment was at Old Tenant cemetery, Manalapan.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Belmar Presbyterian Church or the United Methodist Church Fellowship Fund would be appreciated.
Charles M. LoCascio Jr.
Spring Lake Heights resident Charles M. LoCascio Jr. died Friday, Aug. 11 in Community Medical Center, Toms River.
He was 60 years old.
Charles had been the President of Affordable Heating and Cooling, Spring Lake Heights for the past 26 years. Prior to this he had been a member of the Ironworkers Local No. 399 for nine years. He was a coach and volunteer at Spring Lake Heights Little League.
Mr. LoCascio was a USMC Veteran of the Vietnam War and had attended Wall United Methodist Church, Spring Lake Heights. He was also an avid golfer and fisherman.
Born in Long Branch, he had lived in Spring Lake Heights since age 3, graduating from the Spring Lake Heights Elementary School, Manasquan High School and he had attended Monmouth College.
His entire life revolved around his family and especially his grandchildren, who were the loves of his life.
Surviving is his devoted wife of 32 years, Vivian [nee Brandimarte] LoCascio; his beloved children, Edward of Point Pleasant, Charles M. III and his fiancee Lara of Marlton, Michael of Brick Township, Jamie and Michael Dolpies of Philadelphia, Christine and Brian Youngblood of Howell and his daughter-in-law, Tina LoCascio of Maywood; his cherished grandchildren, Haleigh, Brian, Julia, Cortneigh, and Marissa; his two brothers, John E. and wife Shelly LoCascio and Richard A. and wife Joan LoCascio, all of Wall; and three nieces and two nephews.
