Barbara Jane Ellis

Brielle resident Barbara Jane Ellis died Thursday, Jan. 4 at the Overlook Hospital in Summit.

She was 76 years old.

Barbara was born in Montclair and lived in Wayne for 23 years, before moving to Brielle 25 years ago.

She graduated from Bloomfield High School in the year 1948. She was a secretary for NJ Bell Telephone Co. in Fair Lawn, and then Toms River for 35 years. She retired in 1992.

Barbara enjoyed dancing, entertaining, socializing with family and friends, and loved both the ocean and the beach. She was a gregarious person, and was stylish, vibrant, always on the go, and had a high amount of inner strength and determination.

Surviving are one daughter Debra Ann Waldron and her husband Michael of Blairstown; two sons R. Craig Ellis of Basking Ridge and H. Scott Ellis and wife Patricia of Basking Ridge; one brother Roger Brandell and wife Beverly of Brielle, and grandchildren Michael and wife Cecilia, Lauren Ashley, and Mattison Rose.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 8 at the Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home in Wayne. In lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be sent to the Rotary International’s PoliPlus Foundation.

Lois B. Moberg

ea Girt resident Lois B. Moberg died Saturday, Jan. 6 at the Burnt Tavern Care Center in Brick.

She was 76 years old.

Mrs. Moberg was born in Newark and lived there before moving to Sea Girt 50 years ago. She was employed with the Prudential Insurance Company in Newark during her early years.

Mrs. Moberg was a member of the Red Hat Ladies. She was also very active with the Friends of Special Children, and as a caregiver for her son Jeffrey.

She was marrried for 50 years to the late Robert T. Moberg, who passed away in 2001. She is survived by her sons, Greg and his wife Collen Moberg of Point Pleasant Beach, Gary and his wife Debra Moberg of Point Pleasant, and Jeffrey Moberg of Sea Girt. Her grandchildren are Brian and Lindsay, Allison, Amy, Kyle, and Craig.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 10 at the Atlantic View cemetery in Manasquan.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked for memorials to be made to the Manasquan First Aid Squad, 65 Broad Street, Manasquan, 08736.

Yvonne Shibla

Avon-by-the-Sea resident Yvonne Shibla died Jan. 3 in at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

She was 91 years old.

Mrs. Shibla was daughter of the late Edward R. Smith Sr. and Norma Clayton Smith. She was born at home in Avon-by-the-Sea, where she remained a lifelong resident.

Mrs. Shibla was a bookeeper for her late husband’s company Shibla Signs of Avon-by-the-Sea for many years before retiring.

Mrs. Shibla was predeceased by her husband Kenneth O. Shibla. She is survived by her brother Edward R. Smith Jr. of Crowley, Texas, and two nephews Thomas B. Smith and Donald R. Smith. Mrs. Shibla also had many friends in the Shore area.

Arrangements were made by the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home of Wall.

John Petersen III

Sea Girt resident John “Big John” Andrew Lars Petersen III, 53, died suddenly on Tuesday, Dec. 26.

He was 53 years old.

Mr. Petersen was a self-employed general contractor who owned and operated John Petersen Construction LLC in Sea Girt, which became incorporated this past year. He previously worked for Clayton Concrete in Lakewood. John was an amazingly talented mason known for his pavers and retaining walls. Mr. Petersen also owned and operated Oceanside Audio in Sea Girt and loved to DJ fund-raisers and benefits. He graduated from Wood-Ridge High School and was an All-State Linemen on the Wood-Ridge High School Football Team. Born in Passiac, he grew up in Wood-Ridge and lived in South Dakota before moving to the Jersey Shore 17 years ago.

He was predeceased by his parents, John Andrew Lars Petersen Jr. and Gisela Sophie Petersen. He is survived by his wife, Barbara S. Baron Petersen; brother, Roy Petersen, Oxford, NY; sister, Eleanor Kamienecki, Clifton; brother-in-law, John Baron and his wife Barbara, Basking Ridge; sister-in-law, Carol Kyle and her husband Ken, Toms River; nieces, Jennifer and Elizabeth Baron, Wendy Bibbo and Jessica Petersen; and nephews Gregory Baron and John Petersen.

Donations may be made to “A Time For Me,” caring for women with cancer, P.O. Box 364, Brielle, 08730. Arrangements were provided by O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

Louis “Red” Pesoli

Toms River resident Louis “Red” Pesoli died Friday, Jan. 5 at Care One at Wall Senior Care Center in Wall Township.

He was 82 years old.

He was born in Carbondale, Pa., and lived in Paterson for 63 years before moving to Toms River in 1998.

Mr. Pesoli was retired from the textile and garment industry in 1990 after 40 years. He was a naval veteran during WW II and served in the Pacific Theater.

He was a loving husband, father, and “the best” grandfather. He will be greatly missed. Surviving are his loving wife Grace D’Antonio of 60 years; two brothers Anthony of Belleville and Angelo if Carbondale, PA; four children Rosella Crow of Frisco, Texas, Marguerite Kresky of Wall Township, Louis Pesoli of Clifton, and Paula Favocci of Belleville; and six grandchildren.

Visitations were held Monday, Jan. 8 at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home in Manasquan, with a Christian Burial on Tuesday at Saint Denis Church. Mr. Pesoli will be laid to rest at the General William C. Doyle Veteran’s Memorial cemetery in Arneytown. In lieu of flowers, family asked that donations be made to the Memorial and Honor Program, Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 Saint Juse Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.

Jean E. Pasquini

Neptune City resident Jean E. Pasquini died Friday, Jan. 5 at her residence. The family held a private funeral service at the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall.

She was 80 years old.

Jean had been employed as a legal secretary with the law firm of Robert Nolan, Esq. in Glenn Falls, N.Y., for many years. She was a deeply religious woman who was a parishioner with the Christ the King Church. She also volunteered for the parish school, where she was a catechism teacher.

Jean was also a member of the Garden Club of Guilderland, N.Y. She had a fondness for animals and helping children all her life. She was born and raised in Albany, N.Y., before moving to Neptune City seven years ago.

Jean was predeceased by her parents Herman Frederick and Hazel Fairchild Anger; her husband Angelo N. Pasquini in 1998; her son Paul Krug in 1990, and her grandson Nicholas Krug.

Survivivng are her children Keith Krug of Medusa, N.Y., Barbara Ciccone of Neptune City, Sandra Kowalski of Collinsville, Ill., and Susan Soeller of Middletown, N.Y.; seven grandchildren Paul, Brian and Leslie Krug, Amy Krug Lopez, Amanda Kowalski, Kevin Krug, and Kerry Soeller, and seven great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family asked for donations to be made to the Associated Humane Society of N.J., 2960 Shafto Road, Tinton Falls, NJ 07724.

Dr. Richard R. Ryan

Brielle resident Dr. Richard R. Ryan died Sunday, January 7 at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune.

He was 75 years old.

Dr. Ryan was a Radiologist with Jersey Shore Radiologist Associates in Neptune for 23 years before retiring in 1994. He was a graduate of LaSalle University, and received his Medical Doctorate from Temple University Medical School.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, he had lived in Plymouth Meeting, Pa. before moving to Brielle 35 years ago.

He was a member of the American Radiology Association, the N.J. American Medical Association, the Manasquan River Golf Club and the Manasquan River Yacht Club. Known for his love of gardening, he was a member and past president of the American Rhododendron Society, Princeton Chapter.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving enlisted and as a Lt. Commander in the Medical Corps. He was also a Communicant of St. Denis RC Church, Manasquan and had served as an usher for many years.

He was predeceased by his parents Anthony and Margaret Lehota Ryan and his son Richard R. Ryan in 1984.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years Mary Carol Mullen Ryan; three sons and their wives, Steven Anthony and Holly of Tuckerton, Michael Edward and Ann Marie of Manasquan, Matthew Jude and Anne Tiffany of Fair Haven; three daughters and their husbands Patricia Ann and Thomas McAndrew of Point Pleasant, Deborah Elizabeth and William Malloy of Royersford, Pa. and Mary Carol and John Schantz of Forked River; a sister Margaret J. Bell of Reisterstown, Md., and 12 grandchildren Jimmy, Shannon, Ryan, Melissa, Madeline, Meghan, Kevin, Christopher, Brian, Megan, Julia, and Matthew.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial today at 9:30 am at St. Denis RC Church in Manasquan. Interment will be in St. Catharine cemetery, Sea Girt. Margaret Wittenberg

Manasquan resident Margaret Henkel Wittenberg died Dec. 28 in her home.

She was 93 years old.

Known as Midge, she traveled extensively with her husband “Fritz” prior to her death, as well as on her own and with family to many countries.

She thoroughly enjoyed her membership and friendships in the Farmingdale and Manasquan Seniors organizations, and her longtime volunteer work with the Monmouth County Organization for Social Service [MCOSS] Thrift Shop. The MCOSS is now known as the Visiting Nurse Association [VNA].

Mrs. Wittenberg’s quick wit, keen obervations, and friendly conversations will be sorely missed by her family, friends and all those she met on her strolls into town with her devoted and loving caretaker Niki.

Mrs. Wittenberg was predeceased by her husband, Fred Wittenberg, who died in 1970. She is survived by her son Fred Wittenberg; former daughter-in-law Gaye Wittenberg; brother and sister-in-law Walter and Lillian Henkel; sister Florence DiLiberti; granddaughters Heidi and Krista Wittenberg, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 13 at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Manasquan. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to make a donation can do so to the Manasquan First Aid Squad, 65 Broad Street or to the VNA of Central Jersey Hospice, 141 Bodman Place, Red Bank, NJ 07701.

The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home in Manasquan is in charge of arrangements.

Carol A. Mawn

Barnegat resident Carol A. Mawn died Tuesday, Jan. 9 at the Shorrock Gardens Care Center in Brick. Her son and daughter-in-law James Francis Junior and Christine, live in Spring Lake.

Mrs. Mawn was 70 years old.

She was a graduate of Trinity College in Burlington, Vt. where she lettered in basketball. She was a former member of Our Lady of Mercy RC Church in Park Ridge. Born in New York City, she grew up in the Bronx, and then lived in River Vale before moving to Barnegat in 1997.

Mrs. Mawn was predeceased by her husband James Francis Mawn Sr.

Also surviving are her daughter Patricia Ally of Gibsonton, Fla.; two sisters Kathleen Neill of Alexandria, Va. and Mary Beth Miller of The Villages, Fla. She also leaves four grandchildren: Ian, Connor, Charlie Mawn, and Michelle Martinez.

Visiting will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. The service on Friday will begin at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with a burial at 11:30 a.m. at the NJ Veterans cemetery in Wrightstown.

Donations can be made in her name to the Alzheimer’s Association Greater NJ Chapter, 400 Morris Avenue, Suite 251, Denville, 07834.

Bertha M. Farrell

Avon resident Bertha M. Farrell died Sunday, Jan. 7 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

She was 91 years old.

Born in Gillespie, Pa., she lived in Pelum, N.Y. before moving to Avon 50 years ago.

Mrs. Farrell was predeceased by her husband Paul in 1964. Surviving are her sons Jim of Avon, Jack of Lincroft; daughter Patricia Newman of Brielle; sister Elsie Voldeseri of Gillespie, Pa., and three grandchildren.

All services are private, and Reilly Funeral Home in Belmar is in charge of arrangements.

William T. Deutsch

Belmar resident William T. Deutsch died on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at Neptune Rehab and Care Center.

Born in New York City, he lived in Jersey City before moving to Belmar fifty years ago. He was a communicant at Saint Rose Church in Belmar.

Mr. Deutsch was predeceased by his loving wife Rae in 1980, and a son Donald.

Surviving are his daughter Arlene Deutsch Haas of Belmar; three granddaughters Tracy McGough, Jill Papagno, and Wendy Deutsch; three great-grandchildren, and a daughter-in-law Judith Deutsch.

Visitation will be today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reilly Funeral Home in Belmar. Family and friends will gather at the funeral home on Friday at 9 a.m., with a funeral service at 10 a.m.

Mr. Deutsch will be laid to rest at Saint Catharine’s Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers,please send a donation to the charity of your choice.

Jack Meyer

Manasquan resident Jack Meyer died Sunday, Jan. 7 in Melbourne, Fla.

Jack was a life-long surfer. He traveled the world and brought us his beautiful, ocean-life filled artwork. His work can be seen on surfboards, surf clothing, framed artwork, limited editions and stationary. His free spirit lives on in the people he loved and the artwork he left behind.

Surviving are his fiancee Toni Miller; his children Jeremy and Leah; her children Cole and Lacey; sister Cindy and brother Doug.

Jack will be deeply missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to 58 Iriquois Avenue, Manasquan, 08736.

Visiting will be at O’Brien’s Funeral Home Saturday, Jan. 13 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

George Maxwell

Wall resident George S. Maxwell died Sunday, Jan. 7 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

He was 68 years old.

Mr. Maxwell was a line inspector with the Jersey Central Power and Light Co. for 37 years before retiring. He was an avid fisherman who also enjoyed his hobby of walking the beaches with his metal detector.

Born in Neptune, he grew up in West Belmar and was a lifelong resident of the Wall area.

Surviving are his former wife Phyllis Montague of California; mother of George S. Maxwell III and his wife Karen of Manahawkin, and Vickie Clayton and Valerie Stanford of California. Also surviving are six very special grandchildren, along with his former wife Joyce Maxwell of Neptune, and his special friend Katie Winters.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Please contact the family for information. Arrangements are being made by Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home in Wall.
