Marjorie Lawless DeLuca

Eatontown resident Marjorie Lawless DeLuca, formerly of Belmar and Jersey City, died Friday, March 31 in Jersey Shore Center, Eatontown.

She was 96 years old.

She was born Sept. 23, 1908 in Jersey City, where she was educated and resided until 1971. She and her family relocated to Belmar where they had always enjoyed summers for many years. She moved to Eatontown in 1986.

Mrs. DeLuca was employed by New Jersey Bell Telephone before retiring to raise her family.

She was a member of the Jersey City Woman’s Club, the Mother’s Club of St. Dominic Academy, a former parishioner of St. Rose Church, Belmar and St. Dorothea, Eatontown.

She was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Caroline Schlitt Lawless; her husband, Martin J. DeLuca, in 1952; her daughter, Joan DeLuca; and nine siblings.

She is survived by Barbara McKinney, of Belmar and Susan and Kenneth Becker, of Princeton; her grandchildren, Barbara Krumleich, William McKinney and Brooke Formica; and her great-grandchildren, Kaitlin Krumeich and Ryan Formica.

Funeral arrangements were by McDonough Funeral Home, Manasquan.

Chester C. Zack

Wall Township resident Chester C. Zack died Thursday, Nov. 9 in his home.

He was 80 years old.

Born and raised in Shenandoah, Pa., Mr. Zack lived in Newark and Bloomfield before moving to Wall six years ago.

He was employed for many years as a carpenter before retiring in 1991. He was employed with Kean College, Union, and previously was employed with Westinghouse, Bloomfield.

He was a Navy veteran, serving during World War II from 1944-1946.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Mary Chabala Zack; two sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel David and Terry Zack, Pompton Plains, and Donald Keith and Carmela Zack, Chatham; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diana Marie and Les Breese, Monmouth Junction; and Andrea and Orey Avalone, Point Pleasant; two brothers, Ronald and Francis; two sisters, Vera and Jacquelin; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

Contributions in Mr. Zack’s memory may be made to either the Wall Township First Aid or to the Wall Township Police Department.

Charles F. Montross

Belmar resident Charles F. Montross died Saturday, Nov. 11 in the New Jersey Veterans Home, Edison.

He was 88 years old.

Born in Fanwood, Mr. Montross lived in Irvington before moving to Belmar 30 years ago.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Montross served in Europe and Africa as a tank commander with the 90th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squad. In 1945 he was awarded the Bronze Star, and Purple Heart for injuries received in combat while stationed in France. In addition to the European-African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the American Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

He was employed as a ship designer for many years with Gibbs & Cox Company, before retiring.

He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 46, Spring Lake Heights.

He was predeceased in 2003 by his wife, Frances Montross.

Surviving is his nephew, Donald G. Montross Sr., and his family.

Funeral arrangements were from the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, Wall Township.

Contributions in Mr. Montross’ memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 801 Broad St., Shrewsbury, 07702.

Halina Baczkowski

Spring Lake Heights resident Halina Baczkowski died Saturday, Nov. 11 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 85 years old.

Born in Warsaw, Poland, Mrs. Baczkowski emigrated to the United States in 1950. She lived in Jamesburg before moving to Spring Lake Heights in 1970.

She was predeceased by her husband, George Z. Baczkowski.

Surviving are one son, Andrew G. Baczkowski; three grandchildren, Andrew, Colette and Greg; and three great-grandchildren, Robert Joseph, Connor and Aiden.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mrs. Baczkowski’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.

James E. Dowling

Holiday, Fla., resident James E. Dowling, whose daughter lives in Wall Township, died Sunday, Oct. 8 in Hernando Pasco Hospice, Marliere Care Center, New Port Richey, Fla.

He was 72 years old.

Born in Perth Amboy, Mr. Dowling was a resident of the Jersey Shore before relocating to Clearwater, Fla. He moved to Holiday three years ago.

He was the owner/operator of the Jim Dowling Bar, Point Pleasant Beach, from 1960 to 1972, and the owner/operator of the Ocean 33 Tavern, Long Branch, from 1973 to 1976. He was also an author, book writer and publisher.

He was an Army veteran, serving during the Korean War.

Surviving are his wife of three years, Rebecca Dowling; two sons, James Dowling of Sebastian, Fla., and Steven Dowling, St. Petersburg, Fla.; four daughters, Lynda Murphy, Seattle, Dianne Cooper, Wall, Jeanne Crawford, Huntersville, N.C., and Gloria Dowling, Toms River; two stepsons, Greg Merritt and Mark Merritt, both of Flowery Branch, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Beth Howard of Roswell, Ga.; and nine grandchildren, Shawn, Tommy, Lauren, Nicole, Kaitlyn, Jason, Kathrin, Cursten and Allie.

Funeral arrangements are from the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, Point Pleasant. Friends may call from 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18 until the service to commemorate his life at 11 a.m. in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Dowling’s memory may be made to the Hernando-Pasco Hospice, 6807 Rowan Road, New Port Richey, FL 34653.

Catherine M. Gleason

Brick Township resident Catherine M. Gleason, formerly of Spring Lake, died Sunday, Nov. 12 in her home after a valiant battle with cancer.

Born and raised in Bronx, N.Y., Ms. Gleason was the beloved daughter of the late Margaret R. Coughlan and Patrick J. Gleason, beloved sister of the late Patrick J. Gleason, former Chief of Police of the White Plains Police Department, in New York, who died on Sept. 10, 2006 and beloved sister-in-law of the late Thomas J. O’Connor, Esq. of Spring Lake.

She was a former international banking officer with Interstate Bank.

She was a communicant of St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt.

Surviving are her sister Mary G. O’Connor with whom she lived; her niece Peggy and husband Michael McGrath of Connecticut, her nephew Thomas J. O’Connor and wife Deborah, of Arizona, her niece Dr. Doreen O’Connor-Gomez and husband Carlos, of California, and her nephew John F.X. O’Connor and wife Jackie, of Virginia; and eight grand nieces and nephews; Michael, Caitlin, and Erinn McGrath, Michael and Katherine O’Connor, Aidan J. Gomez, and Kathleen and Bridgit O’Connor.

Funeral arrangements are from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township. Viewing will be from 8 to 9 a.m today in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ms. Gleason’s memory may be made to St. Mark’s Social Concerns Committee, 215 Crescent Parkway, Sea Girt, 08750.

Patricia A. Vertucci

Middletown Township resident Patricia A. Vertucci, formerly of Brielle and Manasquan, died Monday, Nov. 13 in Laurelton Village, Brick Township, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was 50 years old.

Born in New Brunswick, Patricia resided in Brielle and Manasquan before moving to Middletown six years ago.

She was employed for over five years as a quality auditor with Horizon Blue Cross, Wall Township. She was previously employed with Dietrich’s Opticians, Manasquan, for over 20 years.

Patricia loved animals, especially cats, and enjoyed music. She was a loving sister and aunt, and a wonderful friend. She was loved by many and will be missed.

She was predeceased by her parents, Irving and Helen Vertucci.

Surviving are one sister and brother-in-law, Annette and Martin Cross, Howell; one brother, Michael Vertucci, Apache Junction, Ariz.; and one niece and four nephews, Jennifer and Michael Vertucci, and Max, Anthony and William Cross.

Funeral arrangements are from Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan. Visiting will be 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. today in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow in St. Denis Church, Manasquan. Interment will follow in Greenwood cemetery, Brielle.

Ronald I. Smith

Deerfield Beach, Fla., resident Ronald I. Smith, formerly of Spring Lake, died peacefully Monday, Nov. 13 in Boca Raton, Fla., after a valiant 16 year battle brought on by a massive stroke in 1990.

He was 79 years old.

Born in Elizabeth, Mr. Smith lived in Spring Lake and West Hartford, Conn., before moving to Florida.

He was an alumnus of St. Peter’s College, Jersey City.

Ron, known by many as “R.I.,” was the owner of R.I. Smith Associates, Hartford, Conn., for 20 years.

He was a past commander of VFW Post No. 1398, Spring Lake.

He was a U.S. Air Corps veteran of World War II.

He was an avid New York Giants and Yankees fan, loved his golf, and was a respected friend to many.

He was predeceased by his son, Ronald, his brother, James Smith, and two sisters, Elizabeth Perault and Ann Maureen Dymtryk.

Surviving are his wife, Joanne P. Smith; their children, Christopher, James and Andrew; his children, Karen, Marguerite, Michael, Sean, Paul, Pam, Ann Maureen, and Lisa; his step children, Christea Byrne, Thomas Byrne, Tracy Byrne Parent, Timothy Byrne, Michael Byrne, and Joann Byrne Sylvia; one sister, Sheila Frazier; and 36 grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan. Visiting will be from 11:30 a.m to 12:30 p.m. tomorrow in the funeral home, followed by graveside services at 1 p.m. in St. Catharine’s cemetery, Wall Township. Mr. Smith’s life will be celebrated at a Mass at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 21 in St. Peter Claver Church, 47 Pleasant St., West Hartford, Conn., with a reception immediately following.

Katherine Kelly

Wall Township resident Katherine Kelly died Tuesday, Nov. 14 in Geraldine Thompson Nursing Home, Allenwood.

She was 94 years old.

Born in Trenton, Mrs. Kelly moved to Wall in 1951.

She was a 1930 graduate of St. Rose High School, Belmar.

She was employed for many years with Steinbach Department Store, Asbury Park, before retiring in the 1970s.

She was a member of St. Rose Church, Belmar.

She was a volunteer with the Wall Township Board of Elections.

She was predeceased by her husband, James F. Kelly.

Surviving are one son, James R. Kelly, Wall; one daughter, Joanne Kesil, Manasquan; four grandchildren, Jody Novello, Brady and John Kesil, and Joseph Kelly; and seven great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar. Visiting will be at 9 a.m. tomorrow in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. in St. Rose Church, Belmar. Interment will be in St. Catharine’s cemetery, Wall Township.

Brian Keith Tephford

Plantation, Fla., resident Brian Keith Tephford, a Sheriff’s Deputy, formerly of Wall Township, was killed in the line of duty on Sunday, Nov. 12, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

He was 34 years old.

Born in Point Pleasant, Brian lived in Wall Township and Brick Township before moving to Florida in 1991.

He attended school in both Wall and Brick.

He was a six year veteran of the Broward County Sheriffs’ Department.

He was predeceased by his grandparents, Frank and Lillian Tephford, his aunt, Dorothy Miears, and his uncles, Frank Tephford, Jack Wooley and Peter Cottrell.

Surviving are his children, Alyssa, and twins, Ashley and Zachary Tephford; his mother and her companion, Carol Apointe and Wayne Duliba, Townsend, Del.; one uncle, Larry Miears, Whiting; and three aunts, Evelyn Wooley, Neptune, and Marjorie Cottrell and Doris Tephford, both of Freehold.

Funeral arrangements are from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, in the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22, in the funeral home.
