Paul Gerard Smith
Wall Township resident Paul Gerard Smith died Thursday, Aug. 3 in his home.
He was 67 years old.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, he resided in Spring Lake Heights before moving to Wall 25 years ago.
He was a graduate of Fordham University, Bronx. Paul was a Certified Public Accountant in Wall Township for the past 15 years. Previously he was employed with Gusmano and Company.
Paul was a former Boy Scout leader, a member of the Manasquan Elks and a member of the Wall Rotary.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marion McArdle, in 2003.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert G. and Jamie Smith, Springville, N.Y.; a son, Raymond F. Smith, Seaside; a sister and brother-in-law, Clare and Allan Stevenson, California; and his grandchildren, Brook Lynn and Robert II Smith.

H. Jack Spitz
Spring Lake Heights resident H. Jack Spitz lost his life to leukemia on Saturday, Aug. 5 in Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank.
He was 75 years old.
Mr. Spitz was born and raised in Ridgefield Park. He moved to Brick where he raised his family.
He worked as a CPA with the firm of Werner, Berman, and Spitz, in Sea Girt until his retirement.
For the past 17 years he has lived with his wife, Joan, in Spring Lake Heights and Naples Fla. He was a past member of the Board of Directors of the Naples Heritage Golf and Country Club, and he also served as the treasurer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Joan Rigby Spitz; his children, Susan Smith, Kathie and Kevin Wagner, Joan, Jack, Barbara, Charles and Kelley Spitz; Jack, Chris, Gerry, Cliff, Jane, Ken and Kathryn Rigby, Patti and Carlos Meulener, and Nancy and Brian Incremona. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Margaret Brianne Smith, Michael and Kelly Anderson, Rebecca, Jack Ryan, Nicholas, Ainsley and Amelia Spitz, John, Mark, Erin, Colleen, Carolyn, Shannon, Kelley, Jessie and Daniel Rigby, Brian, Kristin and Neil Meulener, Sarah and James McManus, Stevi, Kate and Brian Incremona.

Kathleen Doran
Spring Lake Heights resident of the Arbors, Kathleen Mary Madden Doran died Tuesday, June 20 in West Hudson Continuing Care Center, Kearny.
She was 93 years old.
Mrs. Doran was an elementary school teacher for the Elizabeth Board of Education before retiring many years ago. She was a graduate of Battin High School, Elizabeth, and the Newark Normal School, now Kean University.
Mrs. Doran was a member of the Rosary Society at St. Genevieve’s Roman Catholic Church and the Kean University Alumni Association.
She was predeceased by her husband, Francis Vincent Doran Sr.; and her brother, John Madden.
Mrs. Doran is survived by four daughters, Joan M. McLaughlin and her husband, John of Kearny, Kathleen M. Lally and her husband, Richard of Cranford, Mary E. Doran of Cranford, and Margaret A. Lowes and her husband, Richard of Manasquan; two sons, Francis V. Doran Jr. of Roselle Park, and John M. Doran and his wife, Sue of Toms River; seven grandchildren, Julie, Jill and Jennifer McLaughlin, John and Brian Doran, and Elizabeth and Samantha Lowes; and two nephews, John and Michael Madden.

Dr. Michael T. Beachem
Wall Township resident Dr. Michael T. Beachem entered into eternal rest on Sunday, Aug. 6.
He was 82 years old.
Born in Newark in 1923, he resided in the Somerset section of Franklin Township for 42 years prior to moving to Wall in 1997. He graduated from Seton Hall Preparatory School in 1941.
He began his college career, which was eventually interrupted by World War II and his enlistment in the United States Army. After the war, he resumed his education and earned a bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University in 1947. During World War II, he served in China and was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious service. Other decorations that received included the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. In 1946, he received the Order of the Cloud and Banner [Breast Order of Yun Hui], one of the highest decorations bestowed upon foreigners for exceptional bravery by the President of the Republic of China, Chiang Chung-Cheng.
After being honorably discharged as a first lieutenant in 1946, he enrolled in graduate school at Rutgers University where he earned his master’s degree in 1950 and his Ph.D. in 1954 in organic chemistry. He continued to serve in the Army Reserve until 1953.
Dr. Beachem worked for Merck and Company early in his career, developing a process for the manufacture of a key intermediate used in the manufacture of cortisone.
He spent 29 years with American Cynamid in Bound Brook, as a research chemist and patent liaison. He was a holder of 21 patents, many having to do with wrinkle-resistant, oil- and water-repellant and flame-retardant textile finishes. He authored articles in professional journals and conducted research under U.S. government contracts. He researched chemical agents for the use of tracking, marking, and identifying intrusions into restricted areas. His research was instrumental to the rescue of American soldiers during the Vietnam War.
Dr. Beachem, along with three colleagues, received a U.S. patent for their invention of the CYALUME Chemical Lightstick, an emergency lighting device that would receive international recognition. Developed in the 1970s, it is still widely used by the military during nighttime maneuvers. A variation of the lightstick can be seen at concert arenas and sporting events where audience members often wear chemical light necklaces.
Dr. Beachem was predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years, Mary Frances [Keane], in 2002 and by his parents, Michael and Anna [Hunt] Beachem.
He is survived by four sons, Terrence and his wife, Kathleen, of Mercerville; Michael and his wife, Linda of Old Bridge; Philip and his wife, Laurie of Wall Township; Robert and his wife, Lisa of South River; one daughter, Mary Clare Nelson and her husband, Robert of Edison; 10 grandchildren, Tara and Robert, Kathryn and Eileen, Shannon, Kevin and David, Mark and Leigh Anne and Michael. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret Ahrens, of South Orange; and a nephew, Harry Ahrens of Wayne.
Funeral services will be held today 8:30 a.m. from the Boylan Funeral Home 188 Easton Ave., New Brunswick, followed by a 9 a.m. Mass at St. Mary Mt. Virgin Roman Catholic Church in New Brunswick. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven cemetery in East Hanover.
Lillian E. Brookes
Brielle resident Lillian E. Brookes died Sunday, Aug. 6 in her home.
She was 92 years old.
The daughter of the late Frank Probst and Catherine Shea Probst. She was born in Pleasantville, and lived in Trenton and Cape Coral Fla., before moving to Brielle 20 years ago.
A graduate of the Atlantic Business College of Atlantic County with a secretarial degree, Mrs. Brookes was a manager for the Modern Bridal Shop in Trenton, before her employment with the New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles as a receptionist for the director. She was also active in the Brielle Women’s Club.
She was predeceased by her husband, Vincent J. Brookes, in 1991.
Mrs. Brookes is survived by her son, Michael Brookes of Brielle, a daughter, Gail Boylan, of Golf Breeze, Fla.; and three grandchildren, Jill Valley, Michael and Scott Boylan. Also surviving are her five great-grandchildren: Brook Boylan, Shea Valley, Ryan and Tyler Boylan and Kate Valley.
Funeral services will be held today at 10:30 a.m. from the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, 2652 Highwat 138, Wall, followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Margaret Roman Catholic Church corner of Third and Ludlow, Spring Lake. Interment to follow at Greenwood cemetery of Brielle.
Herman Arnfelt Langenes
Wall Township resident Herman Arnfelt Langenes “Arnie” died quietly on Thursday, Aug. 3, in his home.
He was 69 years old.
Born in Mendal, Norway, he lived in Wall for 52 years. He was a carpenter for Union Local 2250, Red Bank, for over 33 years and was a partner of the Richard E. Sharpe Builders, Inc., Manasquan. He was a 1955 graduate of Manasquan High School. He was a member of the N.J. Builders Association; Manasquan Kiwanis Club; Allenwood church member; U.S. Army National Guard, 250th Armor Division, Sea Girt, for seven years; Boy Scout Leader, Troop 82, Allenwood for 10 years; and Canoe Post assistant leader, Manasquan, for five years.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Dorothy J. Sharpe Langenes; a daughter, Patricia Dignard, and her husband, Richard; a son, Carl, and his wife, Sharon; four grandchildren, Danielle Paul, and Jesse, Jason and Stephanie Langenes; two great-grandchildren, Anthony and Aidan Paul; and a brother, Lars.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12 at the Allenwood Church, Atlantic Avenue, Wall. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make contributions to the Allenwood Church. Berardinelli Forest Hill Memorial, Forest Hills-Newark, is in charge of arrangements.
Grace Marie Wilson
Wall Township resident Grace Marie [nee McCumber] Wilson died Monday, Aug. 7 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
She was 74 years old.
Mrs. Wilson was a homemaker, and had been a volunteer at Point Pleasant Hospital for many years. She was also a Communicant of St. Catharine’s and St. Margaret’s Parish, Spring Lake. Born in Newark, she had lived in Irivington, before moving to Wall 45 years ago.
She was predeceased by her sister Dorothy J. Hemberger.
Surviving is her husband of 47 years, Edward J.; her son, Edward A. and his wife, Mary of Wilmington, N.C.; a son, Thomas M., of Wall; and a daughter, Dorothy A. Wilson, of Wall; and three grandchildren, David, Kevin and Kathryn Wilson.
Funeral service will be held today, at 8:45 a.m. from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. Margaret’s Church, corner of 3rd and Ludlow avenues, Spring Lake, at 9:30 a.m.

Francis R. “Gitchie” Byrne
Belmar resident Francis R. “Gitchie” Byrne died Monday, Aug. 7 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
He was 66 years old.
Frank coached all of his children through Pop Warner Football, Little League Baseball, and later lent them his considerable knowledge of stock car racing. Always a top contender on dirt and asphalt tracks alike, Frank won many races at Wall Stadium, Atlantic City Speedway, and East Windsor.
Later in life, he was invited to participate in the prestigious “Legends of the Falls” Ceremony.
Frank was one of the founding fathers of the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh of the Jersey Shore in Belmar. He was instrumental in bringing true Irish culture to the annual Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in Belmar.
A painter/mason contractor by trade, Frank passed his skills on to his five sons. Frank was the owner of Bayside Mason contractors of Belmar. Born in West Orange he has lived in Belmar all of his life.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Lempka Byrne; his six children, Richard Byrne of Belmar and his wife, Deborah, Joseph E. Byrne of Boca Raton, Fla., William F. Byrne of West Belmar and his wife, Dana, John C. Byrne of Mullica Hill, Donna M. Snead of Toms River and Sean M. Byrne of West Belmar and his wife, Jennifer; and his five grandchildren, Richard, Brittany, Christine, Devon and Brianna.
He was predeceased by his parents, John and Nancy Byrne; and his brother, the late John Byrne.
Visitation will be at the Reilly Funeral Home today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., 801 D Street, Belmar. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral from the funeral home on Friday, Aug. 11 at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Saint Rose Roman Catholic Church, Belmar at 10:30 a.m. Entombment will be at Resurrection Mausoleum, Saint Catharine’s cemetery, Wall Township.

Joseph W.R. Minion
Sea Girt resident Joseph W.R. Minion died Wednesday, July 26 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.
He was 84 years old.
Mr. Minion was born in Garfield and had lived in Mantoloking and Brielle before moving to Sea Girt in 1997. He had been employed as a tax attorney and CPA and had maintained his own CPA firm in Hackensack.
Mr. Minion was also the head of the law department for the American Institute of CPAs in New York, before retiring in 1992.
He had served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, serving for five years.
Mr. Minion did his undergraduate studies and graduated from Law School at Fordham University, Bronx, N.Y.
He was predeceased by his wife, Laura Minion and his daughter, Dr. Michele Minion.
Surviving is his son Joseph W.R. Minion Jr., New York City, his daughter, Marlene and husband Greg Phelps, Pewaukee, Wis. and her children Caroline and Kyle Phelps; his former wife, Virginia Minion, Tinton Falls; his sister and her husband, Marion and Lenny Schnare, Canada; his stepchildren, Brett Kalesky, London, England and Kimberly and her husband, Vincent Lamberto, Oceanport and their children, Jadyn and Vaughn Lamberto.

Suzanne Fanara Hyde
Sea Girt resident, proud and loving mother and grandmother, Suzanne Fanara Hyde died on Wednesday, July 27 in her home.
She was 74 years old.
“Suzy” was full of fun and laughter and a friend to all. She had a great fondness for sketching, gardening, decorating and poodles. She loved to entertain on her Beacon Boulevard front porch, spending time with “The Girls.” The laughter could be heard throughout the neighborhood.
She was a member of the Sea Girt Holly Club, and a past member of the Sea Girt Firemen’s Women’s Auxiliary, as well as a past Sunday school teacher at Saint Uriel’s Church in Sea Girt.
With her passion for poodles, she worked with Cousin Allen Hyde at the Poodle Pub in Sea Girt for many years, grooming dogs and raising show poodles.
She was predeceased by her parents, Francis “PeeWee” and Marian Rae Fanara, and her husband, Richard S. Hyde Sr. in 1993.
Mrs. Hyde is survived by her two sons, Richard S. Hyde Jr., Manasquan, Reginald and his wife Debbie, Wall Township; her cherished grandchildren, Jennifer Hyde Cortese and her husband Michael, Shark River Hills, Richard Hyde Jr., R.J. Hyde, Taylor Hyde, Evan Hyde, Casey Hyde and Madison Hyde; and Chocolate, the little love of her life. She will be deeply missed by them all. God bless her.
