Jeanne L. Bailey

Wall Township resident Jeanne L. Bailey died Sunday, April 23 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, after a brief illness.

She was 38 years old.

Born in Neptune, Ms. Bailey was a lifelong Shore area resident.

She was a homemaker and a devoted mother to her three sons.

She enjoyed the beach.

Surviving are three sons, Edward, James and Keith Bailey, all of Wall; her mother, Dianne Judge, Margate, Fla.; her father, James Van Sciver; three sisters, Nancy Mendola, Coral Springs, Fla., Lauri Van Sciver, Davie, Fla., and Kathy Hynes, Lutz, Fla.; her fiance, Wayne Bryan, Wall; her nieces and nephews, Andrew, Michael, Krystal, Nicholas, William, Taylor and Alexa; and many friends.

Funeral arrangements were from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar.

Maria Scholze

Spring Lake resident Maria Scholze died Tuesday, April 25 in Brandywine Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Neptune, of renal failure.

She was 84 years old.

Born in Germany, Ms. Scholze grew up there before moving to the United States when she was a young woman.

She was the beloved housekeeper and dear companion of the late Ofelia Tirico Zimmer and Frank Zimmer. After a short stay with another family, Maria moved in with the Zimmers and their handyman, Wilfred, who became a lifelong friend. Over the 33 years she lived with the Zimmers, she became “family” to all who entered the house. She was known for her warm hospitality, love of her garden, Pierre the toy poodle, wonderful hors d’ouevres and bundt cake. She moved to the Arbors, Spring Lake Heights, after the death of Mrs. Zimmer, and lived their until a few months ago.

Surviving are one niece, Ann, of Germany; and many friends who loved her simple and caring spirit. These include members of the Tirico and Ayers family. She loved and was loved by little children and will be missed by many.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

Contributions in Ms. Scholze’s memory may be made to the Mother Angelica Foundation.

Elizabeth Gibb Morris

Brick Township resident Elizabeth Gibb Morris, formerly of Spring Lake and Boonton, died Tuesday, April 25 peacefully in her home surrounded by her family.

She was 84 years old.

Mrs. Morris volunteered for over 25 years with the VNA Thrift Shop, Manasquan, and sang with the Sweet Adelines, Jersey Shore Chapter.

She was predeceased in 1986 by her husband, James V. Morris, Sr.

Surviving are seven sons, James V. Jr., Edwin G., Daniel P., Michael G., William J., Timothy A. and Peter A. Morris; one brother, Edwin H. Gibb II; one sister, Carol G. Smith; 13 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

Lorraine M. White

Lakewood resident Lorraine Mildred White, formerly of Spring Lake Heights, died in her home on Sunday, April 23.

She was 87 years old.

Born in Jersey City, Ms. White lived in Spring Lake Heights for several years and in Wildwood, Fla., before moving to Leisure Park, Lakewood, three months ago.

She was employed as the manager of the payroll department with Republic Steel Corporation, Cleveland.

She was predeceased by her parents, Louis and Grace White, and by her brother, Clifford T. White.

Surviving are her twin brother and sister-in-law, John R. and Helen White, Rocky River, Ohio; her sister, Joan Gartley, with whom she lived in Lakewood; three nephews; and three nieces.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

Thelma E. Maddocks

Wall Township resident Thelma Elizabeth Maddocks died Thursday, April 20 in Geraldine Thompson Care Center, Allenwood.

She was 92 years old.

Born in Allenwood, Mrs. Maddocks was a lifelong resident of the Belmar and Wall areas.

She was employed with Evelyn’s Seafood Restaurant and Dave’s Restaurant.

Her family is eternally grateful to the staff of the Geraldine Thompson Center, whose care and compassion made the journey for Thelma peaceful.

She was predeceased in 1955 by her beloved husband, Albert; her parents, Anna and Sidney Gifford; her brother, George Gifford; her sister, Lillian Walton; three sons, Albert, Sidney and Norman; and her sister-in-law, Edith Gifford, of Belmar.

She is survived by three daughters, Suzanne Jost, Wall, Cora Tomaini, Long Branch, and Patti Salles, Highland Park; three daughters-in-law, Catherine Maddocks and Marianne Maddocks, both of Wall, and Pam Maddocks, Jackson; many grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and those who came to her for shelter and aid and thus became family.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

Louise B. Berko

Bay Head resident Louise Budenz Berko, whose daughter lives in Brielle, died Saturday, April 29 in the Claremont Center, Point Pleasant.

She was 89 years old.

Born in Indiana, Mrs. Berko lived in Rahway before residing in Bay Head for 29 years.

She was a homemaker, and was the owner/operator, along with her husband, of Berko’s Market, Rahway. She also was employed as a bookkeeper with Star Uniform Company, Hillside.

While living in Rahway, Mrs. Berko was instrumental in fund-raising for both the construction of the new YMCA swimming pool and a new cafeteria at St. Mary’s School.

She was a beloved wife and mother.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Berko.

Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Paula Berko, Bay Head, and Lawrence and Heather Berko, Lahaina, Hawaii; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joan and Elvin Giordano, Brielle, and Patricia and William Tombs, Clark; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Private funeral arrangements were from the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, Point Pleasant.

Shirley A. Brown

Brick Township resident Shirley A. Brown, whose son lives in Manasquan, died peacefully Thursday, April 27 in Laurelton Village Care Center, Brick, with her family at her side.

She was 70 years old.

Born in Orange, Mrs. Brown lived most of her life in West Orange before moving to Green Brier I, Brick, eight years ago.

She was employed as a banker for 30 years, first with Essex Bank, West Orange, and then with Central Jersey Bank, Sea Girt.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Lillian Hodgin, Dorothy Craig, George F. Bogert Jr. and Marie J. Rogers.

Surviving are three sons, Wayne Brown, West Orange, Gary Brown, Manasquan, and Greg Brown, Manahawkin; two daughters, Cheryl Bruskin, Livingston, and Cathy Walsh, Columbia; one sister, Margaret Murphy, Brick; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

Harold Thompson

Rehoboth Beach, Del. resident Harold “Buck” Thompson, formerly of Manasquan, died peacefully Wednesday, April 26, surrounded by his family.

He was 83 years old.

Born in Manasquan to Clinton F. and Ethel Roland Thompson, Buck was a graduate of Manasquan High School, and attended Franklin and Marshall Academy in Lancaster, Pa., before entering the University of Delaware in 1941. There he played football for two seasons before entering the Army in 1942.

He served in Europe in the 222nd Infantry Regiment of the 42nd Rainbow Division serving in World War II, landing on Normandy Beach on D-Day plus one. After the war, he remained active in the Army Reserve, where he was a member of the 446th Military Government Co., Upland, Pa. until he retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1982.

Buck returned to the University of Delaware in the fall of 1946 and was a member of the varsity football team that was 31-0 in conference and the first Delaware team to play in a bowl game, The Cigar Bowl in Tampa, Fla. He still holds two records at the University of Delaware from 1946, longest rushing play for 98 yards and longest kick-off return for 99 yards.

In the fall of 1947 and 1948, he played professional football for the Brooklyn Dodgers in the newly formed All-American Football Conference, returning to the University of Delaware to graduate in 1950.

He was a teacher, coach, and counselor at Upper Darby High School in Upper Darby, Pa. In 1972, he moved to Lewes, Del., and was employed as financial aid director at the Delaware Tech. Southern Campus and then as career guidance and placement counselor for both the Lake Forest and Cape Henlopen school districts, from which he retired in 1986.

In 1985, he was elected to the board of trustees at the University of Delaware where he served as the chairman of the Trustee Committee on Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation, and as a member of the Agriculture and Societal Studies and Human Resources Committees. After he retired from the board, he continued to serve as the chairman of the Athletics Visiting Committee.

He was a member of the Theta Chi fraternity, Jefferson Lodge No. 15 in Lewes, Shrine Club of Delaware, Kent and Sussex Scottish Rite Club, the Shield and Square Club, Reserve Officers Association, the Rehoboth Beach Yacht and Country Club, and All Saints’ Episcopal Church.

An avid sports enthusiast, Buck enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting with friends and family, and following the Delaware Blue Hens. He was the first sports writer for The Whale newspaper and has been inducted into both the University of Delaware Sports Hall of Fame and the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame.

Surviving are his wife, Joan Marshall Thompson; daughter Shelly Sposato and her husband, Fred, of Milton; daughter Kathy Booth Reed and her husband, John, of Georgetown; his brother, Leroy Thompson of Lewes; seven grandchildren, Marshall Owings and his wife, Christine, Casey Owings, William [Buck] Booth, Meg Booth Lawson and her husband, Cliff, Allisa Booth, Mark Booth and Spencer Booth; and three step-grandchildren, Alison Sposato, Jennifer Reed and John Reed, Jr.

Jeffrey S. Conover

Spring Lake Heights resident Jeffrey S. Conover died Saturday, April 29 in St. Barnabas Hospice, Long Branch, after a brave battle with liver disease.

He was 53 years old.

Born in Long Branch, Jeff was raised in Ocean Township, and resided in Cape Cod, Mass., and Towson, Md., before returning to the Jersey Shore in 2004.

He was a graduate of Ocean Township High School, where he proudly played for the football team, attended Roanoke College, and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Monmouth University.

He was employed in the insurance industry for many years, most recently as a sales consultant with Applied Systems Inc.

Jeff enjoyed spending time at the beach and often could be found walking the Spring Lake boardwalk. He never considered anyone a stranger that he ran into along the way. He will be sorely missed by the many friends he met throughout his life.

He was predeceased by his father, John C. Conover, Jr.

Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Jane and Jules Plangere, Jr., Spring Lake; his daughters, Caroline and Kristi Conover, and their mother, Barbara Conover, all of Towson, Md.; one brother and sister-in-law, John C. III and Cathy Conover, Brielle; one sister and brother-in-law, Wendy and John Bickart, Ocean Township; one stepbrother and his wife, Jules and Janice Plangere III, Manasquan; and many nieces and nephews.

Adelaide M. Harmon

Forked River resident Adelaide M. Harmon, whose son lives in Wall Township, died on Saturday, April 29 at the Jersey Shore Universtity Medical Center in Neptune.

She was 90 years old.

Born in Bayonne, Mrs. Harmon lived in Roselle for many years before moving to Forked River in 1980. She was a teacher for the Hillside Board of Education in Hillside for many years before retiring. Mrs. Harmon was a graduate of Trenton State College and a member of the Philomathean Sigma Sorority. She was a former member of St. Joseph’s Church in Roselle and also a member of the St. Joseph’s Rosary Society. Mrs. Harmon was an active member of the Pheasant Run Association in Forked River.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Arthur W. Harmon, Sr., in 1979; her parents, Peter and Alice Murphy; and sisters, Ann Scharnikow and Veronica Murphy.

Mrs. Harmon is survived by her sons, Arthur W., Jr., and his wife Frances G., of Wall, Richard K., of Brick; her sister Marion McCarthy, of Delray Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren, Timothy, Matthew, Justin, Amie and Kevin; three great-grandchildren, Daniel, Cooper and Jack; two step-grandchildren, Harry and Jennifer and a step-great-grandson, Paul.

Visiting hours will be this Sunday, May 7 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home on Route 35 and New Bedford Road, Wall. The funeral service is scheduled for Monday, May 8 at 9 a.m. in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Church of St. Rose, in Belmar. Burial will be at St. Catherine’s cemetery, Sea Girt.
