Jean F. Judge
Sea Girt resident Jean F. Judge died Sunday, March 6, in her home.
She was 82 years old.
Born and raised in Jersey City, she lived in Hackensack before moving to Sea Girt and Hutchinson’s Island, Fla., eight years ago.
Ms. Judge was a pioneer and nationally recognized authority in the field of consumer affairs. She was president and chief executive officer of Jean Judge Associates, Inc., in Hackensack from 1974 until her retirement in 1994. Her clients included many Fortune 500 companies such as American Express, General Motors, Citicorp, Johnson & Johnson, Colgate Palmolive, Pillsbury and Quaker Oats and such major trade and business associations as The Council of Better Business Bureaus, National Automobile Dealers Association and National Retail Merchants Association. Jean Judge Associates provided a wide range of management services for clients in support of their increasing recognition of the importance of consumer relations in business.
Prior to founding her consulting firm, she established the first Department of Consumer Affairs for The Grand Union Company in New Jersey and served as Director of Consumer Affairs for the company from 1970 to 1974.
Ms. Judge was also a professor and Extension Food Marketing Specialist at Rutgers University, Piscataway, from 1955 and 1970. Her work at the university included development of community-based educational programs and media communications directed to improving consumer satisfaction in the marketplace and consumer understanding of the economic system. She was a frequent speaker at business and professional meetings and on television talk shows.
She was a graduate of the College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station. She served as a trustee of the college for nine years and was the recipient of the College’s Mother Xavier Award, given each year to an outstanding alumna.
Ms. Judge was a lifetime member of the American Dietetic and American Home Economics Association. She was a founding and charter board member of the Society of Consumer Affairs Professionals in Business. She was also a member of many consumer affairs organizations. She is listed in “Who’s Who of American Women,” “Who’s Who in Finance and Industry,” and “Who’s Who in the East.” Ms. Judge was the recipient of many professional awards including the Outstanding Achievement and Individual Achievement Awards from the Society of Consumer Affairs in Business.
Ms. Judge served as a board member of the Society of Consumer Affairs in Business Foundation for several years and a member of the Business Advisory Council of the Food Service Department of Rutgers University for eight years.
She was a member of the Sea Girt Women’s Club, Spring Lake Golf Club, and the Pelican Yacht Club of South Hutchinson Island, Fla.
Ms. Judge was a communicant of St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt and a member of its Altar Rosary Society.
She was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Frances Judge, Sea Girt; sister, Rosemary Judge, Sea Girt; a brother, Frank T. Judge Jr., Belmar, and a nephew, Anthony Judge, Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.
Ms. Judge is survived by two nieces, Marguerite Judge, Chicago, and Kathleen Judge, Chicago; two nephews, Gerard Judge, Chicago and Frank Judge and his wife Carolyn, Ridgefield, Conn.; a grandniece Julia and a grandnephew Spencer, Ridgefield, Conn., and a sister-in-law, Jean M. Judge, Fairfield, Conn.
Funeral services were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.
Brenda Faye Cooke
Neptune resident Brenda Faye Cooke, whose sister lives in Bradley Beach, died Thursday, March 3, in the Imperial Nursing Home, Neptune.
She was 55 years old.
Born in Point Pleasant, Ms. Cooke lived most of her life in the Allenwood section of Wall Township.
She was predeceased by her parents, Vincent Cooke and Melvina Holloway Cooke.
She is survived by her beloved sister, Gaile Cooke Ortiz, and her husband Juan H. Ortiz, Bradley Beach; a niece, Lisa O. Hesse, and husband Paul, Beaufort, S.C.; relatives Lizbeth Hesse Gonzales and family, Paul M. Hesse Jr., S.C. and many cousins and friends.
Ms. Cooke also had a loving special godmother, Mrs. Rudy Sosdian “June,” Allenwood, and Uncle Glenn Cooke, Manasquan.
Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.
Mary A. DaCasto
Manchester Township resident Mary A. DaCasto, whose daughter lives in Manasquan, died Friday, March 4, in the Community Medical Center, Toms River.
She was 90 years old.
Born in Staten Island, N.Y., she resided in Elmwood Park before moving to Whiting 25 years ago. Mrs DaCasto was a homemaker. She enjoyed bowling, shuffleboard, and was a member of the ceramics club.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, John DaCasto; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Patricia DaCasto, Glen Rock; two daughters and a son-in-law, Suzanne DeLuca, Clifton and Diana and Thomas Carroll, Manasquan. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home.
George H. Schmid Jr.
Belmar resident George H. Schmidt Jr. died Sunday, Feb. 27, in Staten Island, N.Y.
He was 30 years old.
Born in Point Pleasant, Mr. Schmid lived in Howell and Keansburg before recently moving to Belmar.
Mr. Schmid was a sales clerk for Skip’s Deli & Grocery, Eatontown, for several years. He was also a salesperson for The Civic Group, Belmar.
Mr. Schmid was an avid skateboarder and greatly enjoyed fishing and talking to people.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Betty Anne Dean Fisher and William J. Fisher, Dewey, Ariz.; father, George H. Schmid Sr., Tucson, Ariz.; a brother and sister-in-law, Thomas V. and Chantal Bellini III, Torrington, Conn.; a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy Anne and John Mitchell, Statesville, N.C.; nephews and nieces, Johnny and Shawn Mitchell, Thomas V. IV, Jake, Olivia, Alisha and Isabella Bellini, and a grandniece, Hayley Mitchell.

Majles Osterlund Fitzpatrick
Belmar resident Majles Osterlund Fitzpatrick died Thursday, March 3, in the Medicenter, Neptune City.
She was 88 years old.
Born in Vestervick, Sweden, she moved to the United States in 1925. She lived in the Fords section of Woodbridge, where she met her future husband, and in Asbury Park before moving to Belmar 60 years ago.
Mrs. Fitzpatrick was a beauty operator at Roxanne’s in Asbury Park for many years. She was also a seamstress. Mrs. Fitzpatrick was a member of the Ocean County Fish and Game Protective Association.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, John F. Fitzpatrick; son Jack Fitzpatrick, Belmar; her brother Carl Robert Osterlund, West Belmar; two granddaughters, Kelly McNamara and Kerry Berry. She also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were from the McDonough Funeral Home, Belmar.
Harry Brown Jr.
Spring Lake Heights resident Harry “Bunky” Brown Jr. died Saturday, March 5, in the Brandywine Senior Center, Neptune.
He was 71 years old.
Born, raised and educated in West Belmar and Wall, Mr. Brown served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during peacetime.
Mr. Brown was a landscaper for the Spring Lake Golf Club for 35 years before retiring in last April.
He was an avid golfer and former member of the Dawn Patrol of the Bel Air Golf Club. He was a serious animal lover and often enjoyed trips to the Monmouth Race Track.
Mr. Brown was predeceased by his wife of 35 years, Theresa M. Napolitano, in 1997.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kim M. and Adrian J. Hollywood III; two granddaughters, Sheena Marie and Tara Margaret; two sisters, Frances and Gladys, and a brother, Herbert.
Joseph J. Klos
South River resident Joseph J. Klos, whose son lives in Manasquan, died Monday, March 7, in his home.
He was 82 years old.
Born in South River, he was a lifelong resident. Mr. Klos was a technician/project supervisor for Hercules, Inc., Parlin, for 43 years. He belonged to the Hercules 25 Year Club. He was also a part owner, with his son Kenneth, of the Inlet-Outlet Surf Shop, Manasquan, since 1972.
Mr. Klos was a World War II Navy veteran.
He was also a communicant of St. Mary of Ostrabrama Church, South River, where he belonged to the church’s Holy Name Society. He was an avid fresh and saltwater fisherman, hunter, golfer, and gardener.
Mr. Klos was predeceased by two brothers, John and Edward Klos, and a sister, Caroline Babula.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eleanor Piskorski Klos; a son, Kenneth, Manasquan; a daughter, Bernadette Teets and her husband Jon, Scottsdale, Ariz; and three granddaughters, Colette, Lauren and Stephanie Teets.
Funeral services will be held today at 9:45 a.m. in the Brunswick Memorial Home, 454 Cranberry Road, East Brunswick, followed by a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church, South River.

Christine M. Rahenkamp
Spring Lake resident Christine M. Rahenkamp died Wednesday, March 2 in the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
Born in Southold, Long Island, N.Y., she lived in Avon before coming to Spring Lake 35 years ago.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Harold Garret; her second husband George Rahenkamp; a daughter Sondra Garret; a brother Joe Hipp; sister Bert Eldridge; sister Pauline McGowan.
Mrs. Rahenkamp is survived by her brother, Al Hipp; special niece Susan Hurden, Spring Lake; and many other nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.
Eugenia Maguire Breidt
Brick Township resident Eugenia Maguire Breidt, formerly of Avon, died Thursday, March 3, in the Ocean Medical Center, Brick Township.
She was 88 years old.
Born in Newark, she lived in Hillside, Whippany, Mendham and Avon before moving to Brick four years ago.
Mrs. Breidt was a publicist and volunteer for The Visiting Nurse Association in Somerset for 41 years. She also wrote many human interest articles for The Observer Tribune, Mendham, and for the Green Briar I Newsletter, Brick Township.
She was a communicant of St. Elizabeth Church, Avon, and The Church of Epiphany, Brick Township.
Mrs. Breidt was predeceased by her husband, Albert A. Breidt Jr., in 2000.
She is survived by her son, Thomas S., Maplewood; a daughter Melissa Scott, Brick Township; her brother Jack Maguire, Bradenton, Fla.; and four grandsons, Bryan, Andrew, Timothy, and Cody.
Funeral arrangements were from the McDonough Funeral Home, Belmar.

Edward M. Gunning
Englewood, Fla. resident Edward Michael “Mickey” Gunning, formerly of Spring Lake, died Friday, March 4, in his home.
He was 72 years old.
Born in Orange, to Edward and Delores Gunning, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean W ar.
Mr. Gunning moved to Englewood, Fla. from Spring Lake in 1991. He was a member of St. Catharine’s and St. Margaret’s Parish, Spring Lake.
Mr. Gunning was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara R. Gunning, mother of his 11 children.
He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Dian Rohn Gunning, Englewood, Fla.; six daughters, Theresa McGreevey, Spring Lake; Colleen Gunning, Brielle; Mary Bannick, Spring Lake Heights; Kelly Mullaney, Spring Lake Heights; Tara Gunning, Spring Lake Heights; Barbara Pacheco, Millbrae, Calif.; five sons, Edward M. Gunning Jr., California; Sean Gunning, Lester, Pennsylvania; Thomas Gunning, Tampa, Fla.; F. Daniel Gunning, Brick Township; Mark Gunning, Manasquan. He is also survived by: a step-daughter, Catherine Mercadante, Glenwood Landing, N.Y.; two step-sons, Thomas Covino, San Antonio, Texas; James Covino, Sands Point, N.Y.; and his mother-in-law Dorothy Rohn, Englewood, Fla. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren.
Visiting hours are today, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Route 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall Township.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 8:45 a.m. from the O’Brien Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake. Interment will be at St. Catharine’s cemetery, Wall Township.
Florence L. Hornick Sherman
Spring Lake resident Florence L. Hornick Sherman died Tuesday, March 8, in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
He was 90 years old.
Born and raised in Trenton, she had resided in Spring Lake for over 50 years. Mrs. Sherman had been a member of the Spring Lake American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the Catholic Daughters of America, and a Girl Scout leader.
She will always be remembered for her quick sense of humor, her unselfish, generous spirit and deep devotion to her family.
Mrs. Sherman was predeceased by her husband Theodore Sherman.
She is survived by her daughters, Susan Geldart, Little Egg Harbor, Ellen Sherman, Monmouth Junction, a son-in-law Walter Geldart; and her grandchildren, Jeffrey McGuire, Julie Ledbetter and Jeremy, Christina and Marielle Henderson. She also leaves a brother, Thomas Hormick, and a sister, Dorothy Margerum.
Relatives and friends may call at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Route 35 and New Bedford Road, Wall, on Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Mass at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake, on Friday at 11 a.m., followed by committal at St. Catharine’s cemetery, Sea Girt.
