Mildred Bensel

Brielle resident Mildred Bensel died Thursday, Jan. 27 in her home.

She was 86 years old.

Born in Glen Hope, Pa., Mrs. Bensel resided in East Orange before moving to Brielle in 1969.

A graduate of Temple University Nursing School, she was a registered nurse. For many years, she worked with her husband, Arlington Bensel Jr., M.D., in his medical practice.

She was a member of the Manasquan River Golf Club and was active with her husband in the Dartmouth Alumni Association. She was also a member of the Brielle Flower Club and did volunteer work with the Brick Animal Shelter.

Mrs. Bensel was predeceased by her husband, Arlington Bensel Jr., who died in 1989.

She is survived by a son, Arlington “Jeff” Bensel III, Brielle; a daughter and son-in-law, Marianne and Dennis McClure, Bradford, Vt., and grandson, Sean Patrick McClure, Boston.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

Daniel D. Hayes

Wall Township resident Daniel D. Hayes died Friday, January 29 in his home.

He was 80 years old.

Danny was born in Newark, but moved to the shore in 1947 and has lived in the West Belmar section of Wall for the last 35 years.

He retired in 2002 after 20 years as concessionaire for the New Jersey Commission for the Blind. He worked at the Toms River Court House and the Eatontown Post Office Distribution Center.

He was a bartender at Pat’s Tavern, Belmar, before owning Danny’s in Asbury Park.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the Pat Joyce Association, Wall.

He is survived by two sons, Daniel J. and Douglas R.,West Belmar; a daughter, Diane R. Hayes, Neptune, and two brothers, Robert H., Belmar, and John F., Neptune City

Funeral arrangements were from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Rose Building Fund, 603 7th Ave., Belmar or the Commission for the Blind, Belmar Boulevard and Allenwood Road, Wall.

William J. Dunfee

Florida resident William J. Dunfee, formerly of Lake Como, died Tuesday, Jan. 25 at Villages Regional Hospital, Florida, after falling from a ladder.

He was 64 years old.

Mr. Dunfee was born and resided in Lake Como until moving around 1988 to Florida, where he was a gardener until he retired. He was employed by Belmar Water Works for about 15 years. He graduated from Manasquan High School in 1958. He belonged to the Belmar Fire Company until he transferred to South Belmar Fire Company, where he was chief from 1978 to 1979 and again in 1984. Mr. Dunfee was also an instructor at the Monmouth County Fire Academy.

He was predeceased by his parents, Howard and Hazel Dunfee; a brother, Howard Jr., and two sisters, Anna Cox and Cora Wilverton.

Mr. Dunfee is survived by two daughters, Deborah Marie Chase, Florida, and Lisa Michelle Seaman, Seaside Heights; a grandson, Christian Ace Seaman; a sister, Peg Norcross and her husband, George, Spring Lake Heights, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Wall United Methodist Church, Old Mill Road, Spring Lake Heights on Saturday at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Lake Como Fire Company.

Anna Mary Carhart Barth

Brick Township resident Anna Mary Carhart Barth, formerly of Sea Girt, died Monday, Jan.24 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

She was 92 years old.

Born in Newark, Mrs. Barth lived in Sea Girt before coming to Brick in 1969. Mrs. Barth was the eldest of her nine siblings, all of whom predeceased her. She was deeply devoted to her family.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles R. Barth, in 1985.

Mrs. Barth is survived by her sons, Charles R. Barth III, and Robert C. Barth; daughters, Beryl Pedersen and Margaret LaSalle; grandchildren, Charles R. IV, Paige A. and Barrett Barth, Joseph L. Whalen Jr., Wendy A. Kicak, Melissa A. Fitzpatrick and Christopher Barth, and great-grandchildren, Kurt, Erika, Allison, Rachel, Cassie, John, Haleigh, Lilah and Samantha.

Funeral arrangements were from the the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Sgt. Stephen R. Sherman

Neptune resident Sgt. Stephen R. Sherman, formerly of Spring Lake Heights, died Thursday, Feb. 3 while serving our country in Mosul, Iraq.

He was 27 years old.

Sgt. Sherman enlisted in the Army in April 2003. He completed basic and advanced individual training as a Chemical Operations Specialist soldier at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., in October 2003, before being assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash. He deployed to Iraq from Fort Lewis with his unit in October 2004, serving as a Nuclear, Biological, Chemical [NBC] noncommissioned officer and directing soldiers in the operation, maintenance and use of NBC detection and decontamination equipment. His medals and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

Born in July 1977 in Arlington, VA., Sgt. Sherman moved with his family to Spring Lake Heights, when he was 11 years old, and then moved with his family to Neptune four years ago. He attended his freshman year at Manasquan High School, transferring for his sophomore through senior years to High Tech High School, Brookdale Community College, graduating in 1996. Sgt. Sherman later attended the University of Oregon, graduating with a business administration degree in 2001. Before enlisting in the U.S. Army, he managed a Budget Rent-A-War franchise in the Cayman Islands. Among his many interests were outdoor sports and survival skills including participating in an 80-day Outward Bound Excursion survival skills training course.

Sgt. Sherman will be remembered as a gentle and loving son who was determined to shield his mother from the harsh and frightening realities of war. In conversations and e-mail, he would often focus on the brighter aspects of a difficult situation. Things like the camaraderie of the troops and his interaction with the children of Iraq were the inspiration for much of his correspondence.

Sgt. Sherman is survived by his mother, Bernadette Sherman, Neptune; his father Richard W. Sherman, Great Falls, Va.; brothers Eddie and Danny; sister, Caitlin; half-brother and sister, Will and Annie Sherman, Great Falls, Va.; maternal grandmother, Rose Wildeman, Point Pleasant and paternal grandmother, Beverly Marten, Camden, Del.

He is also survived by several aunts and uncles, John Wildeman Jr., Punta Gorda, Fla.; Kevin and Sarah Wildeman, McLean, Va.; Jim and Donna Brogan, Point Pleasant; Brian and Mary Wildeman, Canton, Ga.; Terry and Veronica Wildeman, Farmingdale; Timmy and Anna Lee Wildeman, Shark River, and Tom Sherman, Manahawkin, and many loving cousins, extended family and friends.

Visiting hours will be on today from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m.to 9 p.m. at the Ely Funeral Home, 3316 Rt. 33, Neptune and on Friday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Holy Innocents Church. Shuttle transportation from the Holy Innocents church parking lot will be provided for the evening viewing hours tonight.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 7 p.m. at Holy Innocents Church, West Bangs Avenue and Rt. 33. Interment will be at Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, Va. on Monday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m.

Arlington National cemetery does not accept flowers, therefore at the family’s request, memorial donations can be made to the American Red Cross or the Outward Bound Scholarship program.

Kathleen Loughlin Petzold

Wall Township resident Kathleen Loughlin Petzold passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 2 in her home.

She was 44 years old.

Born in South Amboy, she was a graduate of Manasquan High School and a lifelong Manasquan resident, until moving to Wall ten years ago.

Mrs. Petzold had been employed as a secretary for Clayton & Clayton Realtors, Wall for the past year.

She was predeceased by her father, William Loughlin, and two brothers, Michael and Kevin Loughlin.

Mrs. Petzold is survived by her husband, Thomas Petzold; son, Michael B. Loughlin, Wall; mother, Rachel “Chickie” Loughlin, Boston; brothers, Mark Loughlin, Manasquan, and William Loughlin, Boston; nephews, James Loughlin and Christopher and Kyle Petzold. She is also survived by a niece, several aunts and uncles, many dear friends and her two dogs, Vegas and Radar.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

In keeping with the wishes of Mrs. Petzold, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Deborah Hospital Foundation, NJ Region, P.O. Box 820, Browns Mills, 08015-0820.

William Graham Brown

Manasquan resident William Graham Brown died Saturday, Jan. 29 in his home.

He was 81 years old.

Born in New York City, he was a member of the Colgate University Class of 1945 where he was a brother of Delta Kappa Epsilon. He was a decorated veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. He later was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a past president of the Kiwanis International in Manasquan. He was also a member of the Society of the Cincinnati. An enthusiastic member of The Rolls Royce Owners Club of America, his other interests included trap and skeet shooting, motorcycle racing and model railroading.

Until his retirement in 1988, he had been a real estate executive with several New Jersey firms including Hawes & McAfee, Manasquan, and Brown Associates, Wall. He had also served as a real estate specialist for the United States Postal Service.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly S. Brown; children, William Graham Brown Jr., Diane Eden Raver, Barbara Ann Laber and four grandchildren.

A springtime memorial service is planned. Funeral arrangements are from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Visiting Nurses Association of New Jersey.

Raymond Sickles Horner

Lakewood resident Raymond Sickles Horner, whose family lives in Wall Township, died Friday, Feb. 4 at Leisure Park.

He was 81 years old.

Born and raised in Neptune, he served for 25 years as a police officer before retiring in 1972. He was a member of the Neptune Veterans of Foreign Wars and Neptune Local 74 of the Police Benevolent Association.

Mr. Horner is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Dorothy Catley Horner; three daughters and their husbands, Lynda and Jeff Hendricks, Wall, Donna and Pat Day, Toms River, and Nancy and Bob Tiedemann, Wall, and a son and his wife, Ray and Michele Horner, Howell. He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and spouses, Kevin and Cheryl Hendricks, Howell; Scott and Shannon Hendricks, Wall; Steven and Heidi Hendricks, Bayville; Pat and Jennine Day, Toms River; Paul and Amy Day, Hawaii; Kelly Day, Red Bank; Joy Day, Toms River; Robby and Ashley Tiedemann, Texas; Michael and Amy Tiedemann, Wall; Jay and Jennine Tiedemann, Howell and Jordan Horner, Howell. He also leaves 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, Wall.

John V. ‘Jack’ McDermott Sr.

Avon-by-the-Sea resident John V. “Jack” McDermott Sr. died Saturday, Feb. 5 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 84 years old.

Born, raised and educated in New York City, he was a Certified Public Accountant with Ernst & Young, the Ford Foundation, New York City and International Research & Exchanges Board. He retired in 1985.

Mr. McDermott resided in Closter for 40 years before relocating to Avon in 1985.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was a member of the American Legion in Closter. He attended Manhattan College, Riverdale, receiving a bachelor’s degree in accounting and later earning his master’s degree in business at Fordham University. He was an active member of both alumni associations. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, Council 3679, Closter and a former Grand Knight. He was a parishioner, eucharistic minister, usher, lecter, and member of the Holy Name Society and parish council of St. Mary’s Church, Closter. He was treasurer of Boy Scout Troop No. 63 and a coach of Little League in Closter.

While residing in Avon, he belonged to Avon Leisure Citizens. He was a communicant, eucharistic minister and member of the parish council of St. Elizabeth’s Church, Avon.

Mr. McDermott was predeceased by his parents, Peter and Margaret Vallely McDermott, and baby daughter, Marie A. McDermott.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Audrey Sakany McDermott; sons, John V. McDermott, Branchville, Charles W. McDermott, Augusta, and Gary A. McDermott, Scotch Plains; daughter, JoAnn A. Reed, Spring Lake; eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral arrangements were from the McDonough Funeral Home, Belmar.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Elizabeth Church, 424 Lincoln Ave., Avon, 07717.

Anna Briglia Dudley

Wall Township resident Anna Briglia Dudley died Thursday, Feb. 3 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 89 years old.

Born in New York City, she lived in Montclair, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Green Brook, before moving to Wall 20 years ago.

She was a self-employed publisher who owned and operated Store News in Dunellen before retiring in 1984. She was a U.S. Army veteran that served during World War II. Mrs. Dudley was a communicant of the Church of St. Rose, Belmar, and was a member of the St. Rose Prime Timers.

Mrs. Dudley was predeceased by her loving husband, Joe D. Dudley, in 1971.

She is survived by her son, Craig W. Dudley, Middlesex; daughters, Patricia D. Andriola, Stroudsburg, Pa., and Mary Goias, Machias, N.Y.; brother, Michael Briglia, Eatontown, and sister, Catherine Stephens, Wall. She also leaves seven grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

Mary Louise Plumb Agemian

Spring Lake resident Mary Louise Plumb Agemian, formerly of Tenafly, died Friday, Feb. 4 in the Medi-Center, Neptune.

She was 92 years old.

Born in Hackensack, Mrs. Agemian was a former member of the Spring Lake Golf Club and the Spring Lake Bath and Tennis Club.

She was predeceased in 1996 by her husband of 59 years, Charles A. Agemian.

She is survived by two daughters, Sandra A. Borg, Spring Lake and Englewood, and Mary Louise Heath, Austin, Texas; sister, Catherine Plumb, Florida; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.
