John A. ‘Jack’ McCarthy
Spring Lake resident John A. “Jack” McCarthy died Sunday, May 15 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
He was 81 years old.
Born in Kearny, he lived in Holmdel for 20 years, and then to Williamsburg, Va. for 11 years before coming to Spring Lake in 2002. Mr. McCarthy was the sales manager and founder of Profexray in Kearny. He was a pioneer in the radiology community and managed his company from 1961 until his retirement in 1986. Mr. McCarthy was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Office of Strategic Services during World War II and received the Good Conduct Medal and the American Theatre, Asiatic Pacific Theatre and World War II Victory Ribbons, for his service. He was a graduate of St. Benedict’s Prep Class of 1943 and attended Seaton Hall University. Mr. McCarthy was a communicant of St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake and was a former communicant of St. Catharine’s Church, Homdel and St. Bede Church, Williamsburg, Va. He was the truest gentleman with a unique sense of humor who will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
Mr. McCarthy was predeceased by his beloved wife of 51 years, Mildred Davies McCarthy; brother Joseph F. McCarthy; and sister Marie Hammond.
He is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Miller, Edison; son John S. mcCarthy, Calif.; and grandchildren Tyler and Victoria Miller. He also leaves a brother, Gerald McCarthy, N.C. and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall Township. A funeral service will be held tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake, at 9:30 a.m. followed by committal at Holy Cross cemetery, North Arlington. Memorial donations may be made to St. Benedict’s Preparatory School, 520 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd., Newark 07102.
Elaine T. Graney
Wall Township resident Elaine T. Graney died Tuesday, May 17 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
She was 80 years old.
Born in Elizabeth, Ms. Graney moved to Wall 12 years ago. She retired in 1993 as a vice president of Morgan Guarantee Trust Co., New York City. She was with the firm for over 50 years. Ms Graney was a volunteer for the VNA Thrift Shop, Manasquan, an avid quilter and she loved to bowl. Ms. Graney is a former communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Rahway, and was a volunteer for the Auxiliary at Rahway Hospital.
Ms. Graney was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Mary Graney; and sister Marie Harrahill.
She is survived by her brothers and their wives, Edward and Mareen and Robert and Patricia Graney. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours today will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Reilly Funeral Home, 8th Ave. and D Street, Belmar. The family will gather at the funeral home tomorrow at 9:15 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rose Church, Belmar. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s cemetery in Clark. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Madonna House, Hwy 35 and 7th Ave., Neptune 07753 would be appreciated.
Joseph Walter Swain
Medford resident Joseph Walter Swain, formerly of Wall Township, died Saturday, May 14 in his home.
He was 84 years old.
Mr. Swain lived in Wall Township and Manasquan until 2004. He graduated from Manasquan High School in 1938 and was the owner of Swain Farm on Sea Girt Ave. Mr. Swain was past Master of Glendola-Allenwood Grange #168 in 1945 and 1946. He was a member of the Wall Kiwanis and Ocean Lodge #89 F & AM. Mr. Swain was also a member of the Allaire Village Historical Society in which he contributed significantly to the Deserted Village restoration. He and his beloved wife Betty enjoyed many years of traveling in their RV and were avid members of the North Shore Antique Car Club, among other interests. Mr. Swain was a member of the Manasquan Friends Meeting.
He is survived by Betty, his wife of 65 years; son Robert; daughter Betty Jean; and several grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy 35, New Bedford Rd., Wall Township. Interment will be at the Atlantic View cemetery in Manasquan.
Rose V. Kremer Crowley
Spring Lake resident Rose V. Kremer Crowley died Wednesday, June 22, at her residence after a brief illness.
She was 90 years old.
Born and raised in Elizabeth, she had summered in Manasquan and then moved to Brielle where she lived for 15 years before moving to Spring Lake 37 years ago. Mrs. Crowley was a communicant of St. Catharine’s and St. Margaret’s Parish, Spring Lake. She was known to be an avid golfer and was immensely proud of the fact that she had captured each flight title for woman’s golf at Manasquan River Golf Club as well as taking the Women’s Club Championship in 1967. Mrs. Crowley was also a member of the Suburban Golf Club, Union, the Manasquan River Golf Club, Brielle, the Port Royal Golf Club, Hilton Head, S.C., the NJ/NY Women’s Metropolitan Golf Association and the NJ Senior’s Golf Association.
Mrs. Crowley was the loving wife of the late William F. Crowley who predeceased her in October of 1983.
She is the devoted mother of her children and their spouses William F. and Joy Crowley Jr., Virginia Beach, Va; Dennis and Sharon Crowley,East Hanover; Thomas and Virginia Crowley, Spring Lake; Barbara and Les Frank, Lake Como; and Kay and Ed Gragnano, Brielle. Mrs. Crowley was also the cherished grandmother of Diana and David Glasier; Joanna and Mark Westbrook; Kevin Frank; Nicole and Jon Behler; Joe Gragnano; Greg Crowley; Jaime Crowley; and Patrick and Dennis Crowley; and beloved great grandmother of Harrison, Justin and Miranda.
The funeral arrangments were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either the Spring Lake Police Association or the Spring Lake First Aid Squad, 311 Washington Ave., Spring Lake, NJ 07762.
James Cartwright Jr.
St. Pete’s Beach, Fla., resident James V. Cartwright, who has family in Wall Township, died May 23, 2005 at Hospice House in Pinellas Park, Fla.
He was 68 years old.
Born in New York City, Mr. Cartwright lived in Point Pleasant Beach before retiring to St. Pete’s Beach, Fla. in 1991. He worked with Jersey Central Light and Power for 34 years before retiring. Mr. Cartwright was a member of the B.P.O.E. Elks in Point Pleasant and the American Legion in St. Pete’s Beach. He served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Demolition Specialist and Military Police.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Ella “Scottie” Cartwright; daughters Dawn Cartwright, West Long Branch and Kathleen Cartwright, Toms River; stepchildren Brenda Burke, Wall, Lisa Pair, Brielle, Joseph Harris, Fairfield, Calif. and Kevin Keel, Oakdale, Conn.; and step-grandchildren Noah and Natasha Kubis, Wall and Haley Rose Pair, Brielle.
A private memorial service was held on the Manasquan River on his birthday, Saturday, June 25.
Francis J. Cardiello
Avon resident Francis J. Cardiello, a pediatrician for over 41 years, died June 26 in his home.
He was 81 years old.
Dr. Cardiello was born in Jersey City and graduated from Lincoln High School and St. Peter’s College. He received his acceptance to New York University Medical School on March 19, the feast day of St. Joseph which began a life-long devotion to St. Joseph. Dr. Cardiello was a graduate of the NYU Medical School, class of 1952. He completed his medical training in pediatrics at the Jersey City Medical Center where he was one of the founder of the Well Baby Station. Later, Dr. Cardiello served as the Vice Chairman of the Board of Managers. He credited his mother for nurturing his interest in medicine, particualrly pediatrics. “It’s strange but my mother’s name was infante which means infant and she was always involved with children. I’m the last of 8 children and every time someone was sick, they would call my mother and I’d go with her.” Dr. Cadiello served in World War II in the artillery and was awarded the World War II victory medal and the American Campaign Medal for his participation in the liberation of France. In addition to his pediatric practice, Dr. Cardiello was involved in local politics and actively campaigned for Dr. Paul Jordan for Jersey City mayor. He was co-founder of the first methadone clinic in Jersey City in 1970. Dr. Cadiello earned a post graduate degree in hospital administration from NYU. He taught clinical pediatrics at the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry, formerly Seton Hall College of Medicine from 1960-1970. In 1984, Dr. Cardiello relocated to Avon and continued to work part-time at the Visiting Nurse Association of Central Jersey in Asbury Park and Red Bank Community Health Center. In 1996, he participated in a medical relief mission in Honduras with his wife, Mary, his son, Dr. Peter, and two grandsons Jason and Peter Mayer, giving innoculations, medical, dental and surgical treatments. An avid golfer, Dr. Cardiello was a member of the Spring Lake Country Club for 30 years, where he won several senior tournaments.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Eileen; five children all in medically related professions and their spouses, Susan Mayer, Avon, a lactation specialist, and her husband Fred; Donna Appleman, Avon, a renal dialysis nurse, and her husband John; Dr. Gary, Warren, an internist, and his wife Janet; Frank John, Helena, Montana, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, and his wife Theresa; and Dr. Peter, Tanzania, Africa, a pediatrician and HIV physician, and his wife Soyeon Kim.
He also leaves grandchildren Jason, Peter, Laura and Mary Mayer, Julia, Anna, Gregory and Emma Appleman, Matthew, Timothy, and Christian Cardiello, Michael, Rachael, Joseph and Jonathan Cardiello; brother Joseph and his wife Phyllis; and sister-in-law Mary Jane Cardiello.

William “Pat” Francis Moughan
Spring Lake Heights resident William “Pat” Francis Moughan, formerly of Jersey City, died Sunday, June 26 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.
He was 83 years old.
Born in Pittston, Pa., he lived in Jersey City for over 25 years before moving to Bradley Beach 8 years ago, and then into Spring Lake Heights three years ago. Mr. Moughan had been employed as the manager of the security division of Seatrain Lines Inc., Weehawken for 30 years, retiring 21 years ago. Mr. Moughan was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp, serving in the Battle of Guadalcanal during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post. Bayonne.
Mr. Moughan is survived by his wife of 59 years Suzanne Boruta Moughan, his son and his wife Patrick and Patricia Moughan, South Barrington, Ill.; his daughter and her husband Maureen and Ron Schwartz of Spring Lake; and two grandchildren, Jennifer and Matthew Moughan. Francis “Fran” Adams Murray
Brielle resident Francis [Fran} Adams Murray died Thursday, June 23 at Care One, Wall Township following a brief illness.
She was 81 years old.
Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Murray lived in Verona for most of her childhood and adult life before moving to Brielle in 1986. Mrs. Murray graduated from Mt. St. Dominic Academy, Caldwell and attnded Caldwell College. She taught second grade at St. Aloysius in Caldwell for 10 years. She was a participant in the Cana movement and the Rosary Altar Society at Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Verona for many years. Mrs. Murray was President of the Mothers’ Club at Essex Catholic High School, Newark, where her four sons attended high school. While residing in Brielle, Mrs. Murray served as President of Bayberry Garden Club and was a lector and Eucharistic Minister at St. Denis Church in Manasqan. Mrs. Murray also participated in a bowling league at Sea Girt Lanes. Mrs. Murray loved tending to her flowers and playing bridge and enjoyed socializing with her many friends through the years.
Mrs. Murray was predeceased by her parents, Anastasia and Frank Adams; and her youngest child, Michael in 1983.
She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Thomas; sons Richard, Barnegat, Kenneth and his wife Jill, San Diego, Ca, and Thomas III and his wife Katherine of Salem, Ma; grandaughters Kathleen Murray-Nolan and her husband J. Michael Nolan Jr., Gladstone and Normandy Beach and Maureen Murray, Point Pleasant; sisters Beatrice Schooley, Ocean Township and Mary Ann McCarthy, Poquoson, Va; grandchildren Keith, Todd, and Andrew Murray, Megan Murray, William, Stephen, and Brendan Murray, Sean, Gwyneth and Michaela Murray-Nolan, and Matthew, Kyle, and Molly Greninger; and a great-grandson due in September. She is also survived by many nieces and newphews.

Edith Tucker Marshall
Sea Girt resident Edith Tucker Marshall died Saturday, June 25 in the Ocean Medical Center, Brick Township.
She was 96 years old.
Born in Williamsport, Penn., she was raised in Villanova, Penn. Mrs. Marshall resided in Trenton and Sea Girt most of her life. Mrs. Marshall was a legal secretary, retiring after many years as the secretary to the Clerk of the Board of Chosen Freeholders in Mercer County. She held a Realtors license and built and remodeled many homes in Sea Girt, Manasquan and Wall Township. Upon her retirement she became a faithful volunteer at Point Pleasant Hospital until its closure. Mrs. Marshall collected antiques, was accomplished in theorem painting and loved to fish. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
Mrs. Marshall was predeceased by her husband, William Robert Marshall.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Enrico Orlando, of Spring Lake; grandchildren amy Ferris, Awendaw, S.C. and David Orlando, Wellington, Fla.; great-grandchild Hannah Mae Ferris; and sister Ida Gordon, Levittown, Penn.

Louis Albert Kinstel
Spring Lake resident Louis Albert Kinstel, formerly of Toms River and Howell, died Sunday, June 26 at Care One, Wall Township.
He was 74 years old.
Born in New York, NY, Mr. Kinstel had lived in Howell for over 30 years and then in Toms River before moving to Spring Lake five years ago. He had been employed as a telephone electrician at New York Bell Telephone Co. for 20 years and after had been employed by the IBEW Local No. Three United of NY, retiring in 1993. He was a member of the Telephone Pinoeers of America, and the Brick Elks Lodge. He was also a US Navy veteran, serving as a submariner.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years Catherine Downey Kinstel; daughters Susan Kinstel, Spring Lake, Kathleen Chinery, Spring Lake, and Joann and her husband Keith OConover, Little Egg Harbor; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held today at 8:45 A.M. from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 A.M. at St. Margaret’s Church, Corner of Third and Ludlow Ave., Spring Lake.

Bill Umstadter, Jr.
Brielle resident Bill Umstadter, Jr. died Monday, June 27 in the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
He was 73 years old.
Born in Summit, Mr. Umstadter resided in Spring Lake before moving to Brielle six years ago. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Bridgeport, Conn., and his Masters from Rutgers University. Mr. Umstadter was a veteran of the Korean War, serving from 1953-55. A teacher for 48 years, he taught science in the Glen Rock Public School system and then as a professor at Ocean County College, Toms River. He was a member of the Professional Ski Instructors of America[PSIA], the Rutgers Alumni Association, the Scarlet R and the Rutgers Touchdown Club. For 20 years he was a professional ski instructor at Killington, Vt. He loved life, his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Jane Luther-Umstadter; daughter Michelle Umstadter, Redondo Beach, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law Wendy [Umstadter] Ryan and Michael Ryan, Morristown; brother and sister-in-law Grant and Barbara Umstadter, Lakewood; nephew Karl and niece Amy Rose Umstadter; an aunt, cousins, friends, colleagues and associates.

Rosemary Theresa Zachek
Sea Girt resident Rosemary Theresa Zachek died Tuesday, June 28 at her residence.
She was 87 years old.
Born and raised in Newark, she lived in West Orange before moving to Sea Girt 26 yeras ago. Mrs. Zachek was a homemaker and also worked as a librarian at the Carol Dunham Smith Pharmaceutical Company formerly in Orange. She was a 1939 graduate of the College of St. Elizabeth in Convent Station, with a degree in Home Economics. Mrs. Zachek was a communicant of St. Mark’s Church in Sea Girt and a member of their Altar Rosary Society.
She was predeceased by her husband Henry J. Zachek in 1996. Surviving is her son Michael J., Bowling Green KY., daughter Elaine Prendergast Paulson, Merchantville, and grandchildren Edmund, Brian, Elizabeth, Matthew, and Christine.
The funeral service will begin today at 8:30 A.M. from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy. 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall, followed a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 A.M. at St. Mark’s Church in Sea Girt. The burial will be at Gate of Heaven cemetery, East Hanover.

Dr. F. Russell Sandford
Sea Girt resident Dr. F. Russell Sandford died Tuesday, Aug. 16 in his home.
He was 93 years old.
Formerly of Caldwell and Highland Lakes, Dr. Sandford was born in Newark and graduated from St. Benedict’s Academy, Holy Cross College and Long Island University School of Medicine. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving as commanding officer of the 134th and 331st medical regiments. He was responsible for activation and training of 182nd Medical Battalion in the U.S. for operation of his unit in the European theatre of operations. His unit was attached to the Third Army and participated in Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes Campaigns. Col. Sandford was awarded a Bronze Star for meritorious performance of duties in connection with the Ardennes Campaign.
Dr. Sandford had a medical practice in Caldwell for over 30 years before retiring in 1982, and was the team doctor for the Caldwell High School football team for over 20 years. He also provided medical services for Curtis Wright Corporation, Wood Ridge, and was active for many years at Highland Lakes in New Jersey where he served as the initial association president.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ina Paterson Sandford; sons James and wife Carol, Ridgewood and Sandy and his wife Pat, Abingdon, Md.; daughter Judy Evert and her husband Dan, Maui, Hawaii; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Catherine M. Keenan
Belmar resident Catherine M. Keenan died Thursday, Aug. 18 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
She was 82 years old.
Mrs. Keenan was born in Orange and lived in West Orange for many years before moving to Belmar in 1969. She was a beach attendant at the Belmar beach for 12 years before retiring in 1997. Prior to this, she worked for the Belmar Board of Education in the school cafeteria, where she began the school lunch program in the early 1970s.
She was a former communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, West Orange, and past grand region of the Catholic Daughters of America also of the church. Mrs. Keenan was a communicant of St. Rose Church, Belmar, and she was active in the Monmouth County Board of Elections for many years.
She was predeceased by her husband, James P., who died in 1985; brothers William, John and Benjamin Rawnsley; and sisters Mary Pisano and Patricia Markham.
She is survived by her son, James M. Keenan, Belmar; daughters Kathy Bardo, El Cajon, Calif., Sally Kingsley, Belmar, Mary Larbre, Salinas, Calif., and Nancy Gallagher, Manasquan; brothers Henry Rawnsley, Bloomfield, and Thomas Rawnsley, Irvington; sister, Eileen Molinski, Petaluma, Calif.; grandchildren Brian Kingsley, Patrick, Megan and Ellen Gallagher; and great-grandchildren Cassie and Aiden Kingsley.
Funeral services were from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar.
