Daniel A. Savini

Wall Township resident Daniel A. Savini died Saturday, April 9 in the Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 86 years old.

Born in Newark, he had lived in South Orange for many years before moving to Wall Township in 1956. Mr. Savini was a well-known dentist in the Shore area, with a practice in Point Pleasant for 50 years. Prior to becoming a dentist, he was a singer with several Big Bands in Newark. Mr. Savini was a faithful communicant of St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake. He graduated from Villanova University, and then from the University of Maryland Dental School in 1943. Mr. Savini then served as a dentist in the US Navy during World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Savini was also a member of the American Dental Association and the Monmouth and Ocean County Dental Society. He was an avid Giants fan, a skier and a terrific singer. Mr. Savini was a long-time member of the Spring Lake Golf Club, which he considered his “second home”. During his tenure as a member there, he scored a hole in one on the 10th hole.

Mr. Savini was predeceased by sister Annette Amoscato.

He is survived by his five of 62 years, Muriel A. Krieger Savini; sons Dennis M. Savini, Point Pleasant, and Daniel C. and his wife Noel Savini, Sea Girt; daughter Diane and her husband Robert McMann, Duxbury, Mass.; four grandchildren, Tracy Pandora, Mark McMann, and Ryan and Amanda Savini; and two great-grandchildren, Erro and Will Pandora.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

John Lauer

Lake Como resident John Lauer died Sunday, April 11 in the Barnabas Hospice Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch.

He was 86 years old.

Born in Germany, he lived in Jersey City before coming to Wall Township 27 years ago. Mr. Lauer was employed as an embroidery machine operator with Schiffil Embroidery before retiring. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Lauer was a communicant of St. Rose Church, Belmar and a life member of VFW Post 4515 in Point Pleasant, and enjoyed playing bocci ball.

He is survived by his wife, Grace Curren Lauer; daughters Charlene Lawler and Joan Fitz; eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 14 from 9 a.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall Township. Mass will be held at St. Rose Church, Belmar at 10 a.m., followed by a committal at Brig. Gen. Wm. C. Doyle Veteran Memorial cemetery, Ameytown.

Frances Glass Ford Palzer

Sea Girt resident Frances Glass Ford Palzer died Friday, April 8 in her home after a brief illness.

He was 73 years old.

Born in South Orange to Dr. William and Marion Glass, she graduated from Columbia High School and the Berkley Business School. Mrs. Palzer lived in Cranford for 20 years, where she was active in the community serving on the Alter Guild for Trinity Episcopal Church and as past President of the Cranford Newcomers Club. In 1983 she moved to Sea Girt, where she enjoyed many happy years at the beach, playing golf and gardening. Mrs. Palzer made many wonderful friends, whom she enjoyed spending time with. Mrs. Palzer attended St. Uriel’s Episcopal Church and served as past co-chair of the Sea Girt Beautification Committee. She treasured her wonderful friends and family, and wanted to thank them for their friendship and support over the years, and especially during the past several months.

She is survived by her loving husband of 23 years, Dick; sons and their wives Greg and Patti Ford, Houston, Texas, and Jim and Rebecca Ford, Marietta, Ga.; grandchildren Stephanie and Allen, Marietta; Natalie, Ryan, and Kevin, Houston; sister Marianne Rice, Red Bank; and brother Art Glass, Arlington, Vt. Her extended family includes daughters Drey Perkin, India Atlantic, Fla., and Patty Applegate, Palm Bay, Fla.; sons Richy Palzer, Toms River and Tim Palzer, Fort Myer, Fla.; grandchildren Amy and Kenny Perkin, Elizabeth Applegate, Amanda, Paul and Adam Palzer; and great-grandchildren Emily Jonaitis and Roy Williams.

A memorial service will be offered at St. Uriel’s Episcopal Church, Sea Girt, on Friday, April 15 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Embracing Hospice Care, 2101 Hwy 34, S. Ste. B, Wall Township 07719.

Patricia M. Morton

Brick Township resident Patricia M. Morton, formerly of Manasquan, died Wednesday, April 13 in her home.

She was 72 years old.

Mrs. Morton lived most of her life in Manasquan. She moved to Brick Township 10 years ago. Mrs. Morton was a graduate of Manasquan Elementary School and a 1950 graduate of Manasquan High School. She worked for many years at the Squan Tavern, Manasquan. Mrs. Morton lived in Princeton Commons, Brick Township, and was involved in the Women’s Club, Red hat Society, Bocce Team and the knitting group.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Richard Dennis Morton; sons Richard G. Morton and Thomas Morton, both of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; daughters Karen Testa and her husband Tony, Neptune City, and Judy Lomax, Manasquan; mother Florence Shirley, Asbury Park; sister Jacqueline Sabelberg, Calif.; brother Eugene Clabes, Ky.; grandchildren Kristin Morton, Kate Lomax and her fiancee Keith Emmanuel, Kerry Cavanaugh and Kyle Lomax; and great-grandchild Riley Elizabeth Cavanaugh.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

James Gabriel Martemucci

Wall Township resident James Gabriel Martemucci died Saturday, April 16 in the Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 84 years old.

Born in Jersey City, Mr. Martemucci lived in Old Bridge for 43 years before coming to Wall Township two years ago. He was employed as a railroad mechanic with New Jersey Transit before retiring. Mr. Martemucci proudly served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II, as a corporal with the First Air Cargo Re-Supply Squadron, U.S. Army Air Forces. He was an avid Yankees fan, and in his younger years enjoyed playing baseball, and later was a championship Little League coach in Old Bridge.

Mr. Martemucci was predeceased by his brother, Michael, and sister Ann Norton.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen Theresa Martemucci; sons Jimmy and his wife Maria; Bobby and his wife Jan; Thomas and Richard Martemucci; daughter Patti Ann Gallagher and her husband Ed; grandchildren Amanda, Samantha, Alexandra, Brittney, Erin, Ava and Joseph.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

Genevieve 'Gen' M. Schaffer

Barnaget resident Genevieve M. Schaffer, nee Albright, known to friends as “Gen”, who has family in Wall Township, died Saturday, April 9 in her home.

She was 90 years old.

Born in Lockhaven, Penn., and formerly of Colts Neck and Freehold, she moved to Barnaget last December. Mrs. Schaffer was a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church, Freehold and volunteered in their thrift shop. She was a past President of the Colts Neck Auxiliary to the Freehold Area Hospital, Chairman of the Freehold Area Hospital Thrift Shop for 25 years, and was chosen by the Freehold Area Hospital as “Volunteer of the Year”.

Mrs. Schaffer was predeceased by her husband Edgar.

She is survived by her two daughters, Jeanna A. LeMay-Miller, Barnaget, and Susan C. Smith, Scottsdale, Ariz; and sister Carole Nolan, Wall Township.

Funeral arrangements were from the Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Home, Barnaget. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 23 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 33 Throckmorton Street, Freehold.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to either the Kyle J. Libby Foundation, 6007 Sunberry Cirle, Boynton Beach, Fla. 33437 [Kyle was Mrs. Schaffer’s nephew’s son who had died of leukemia, and this foundation helps children with leukemia] or St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.

Charles William Miles, Jr.

Brielle resident Charles William Miles, Jr. died Friday, April 15 in the Fellowship Village, Bernards Township following a hospital entry ten days earlier.

He was 88 years old.

Born in Eggertsville, NY, he graduated from Amherst High School and later Elmhurst College and the University of Buffalo. Mr. Miles became a career tool steel sales and metallurgical executive in a thirty-five year career with Alco Standard, Metalsource Division, Valley Forge, Penn., and its predecessor firm Wheelock & Lovejoy Inc., Cambridge, Mass. Mr. Miles served his country in the US Army during World War II in the European Theater between 1943-1945 as a Staff Sgt. He was assigned to Signal Corps major news service media liasion and hometown newspaper war correspondence duties at the battlefront in both Normandy and the Allied offensive across France and through the crossing of the Rhine. In pre-invasion London, Mr. Miles coordinated the General Staff headquarters message center of Supreme Commander Dwight Eisenhower and again in Frankfurt at the close of his duty following the Allied advance into Germany.

Mr. Miles was a member of St. John-on-the-Mountain Episcopal Church, Bernardsville, for over 30 years. His love of horticulture and gardening as well as his enjoyment from boyhood of golf gave him much pleasure. Mr. Miles served as a Sunday school Superintendant in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Harris Hill, NY for over ten years and a Boy Scouts of America Troop Committeeman. He was an avid outdoorsman, skier, and lover of nature, spending many vacations with his wife on the Main coast at Mt. Desert Island, as well as in Brielle at the Jersey Shore. His numerous travels across Europe and the Mediterranean with his wife provided his fondest memories.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Beatrice; brother Robert A. miles, Canandaigua, NY; three sons, Charles III, Douglas, and Gregory; two nieces, Barbara and Nancy Miles; and six grandchildren, Barrett, Julia, Timothy, Robert, Alec, and Scott.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 30 at the Church of St. John-on-the-Mountain, Bernardsville, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers a donation to the National Lymphoma Society may be made in his name.

Anne E. Tighe

Onancock, VA resident Anne E. Tighe, formerly of Belmar, died April 15 in Hermitage on the eastern shore of Onancock.

She was 95 years old.

Born in Jersey City, Mrs. Tighe lived in Belmar and Stuart, Fla., before moving to Onancock four years ago. She retired in 1971 from the Evans Electronic Area, Fort Monmouth. Mrs. Tighe was a former member of the Church of St. Rose and was a member of the St. Joseph Guild at St. Rose.

Mrs. Tighe was predeceased by her husband William J. Tighe, Sr.

She is survived by her son William J. Tighe Jr. and his wife Anne M., Sandpoint, Idaho; daughter Marjorie A. and her husband William A. Briden, Machipongo, VA; ten grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

Linda M. Bryan

Belmar resident Linda M. Bryan died Monday, April 11 in her home.

She was 52 years old.

Born in Newark, she lived in Belmar for the past 30 years. Ms. Bryan was a member of the Grace Tabernacle Church, Belmar.

She is survived by her brother Joseph Bryan, Raleigh, N.C.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Reilly Funeral Home, 801 D Street, Belmar.

Arthur M. Vitale

Wall Township resident Arthur M. Vitale died Sunday, April 17 in his home.

He was 68 years old.

Born in Jersey City, Mr. Vitale resided in Hudson County before moving to Wall Township 35 years ago. A hairstylist for 50 years, he retired in November 2003 as the owner of Mr. Ted’s House of Hair Fashion, Manasquan. Most recently Mr. Vitale was certified as a paraprofessional in the Wall Township school system. He was a communicant of the St. Denis Catholic Church, Manasquan. Mr. Vitale was a co-founder of the Wall Touchdown Club and served as president of the Wall Boosters from 1981-83.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Claire Marola Vitale; son and daughter-in-law Ted and Mary Ann Vitale, Wall Township; son Marc Vitale, also of Wall Township; son and daughter-in-law Arthur and Gina Vitale, Flower Mound, TX; daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Stephen Kettell, Fairfax, VA; brother Michael Vitale, Spring Lake Heights; sister JoAnn Ricci, Wall Township; grandchildren Ted, Danica, Cara, Stephen, Michael and Grace; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today at 9:30 a.m. at St. Denis Catholic Church, Manasquan. Entombment will follow in St. Catherine cemetery Mausoleum, Wall. The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Arthur Vitale Memorial Fund, 1121 Narrumson Road, Manasquan, 08736.

Della Elizabeth Lister Maynard

Wall Township resident Della Elizabeth Lister Maynard died Thursday, April 14 in her home.

She was 89 years old.

Born in Hobbs, MD she lived in Wall Township for 31 years before returning back to Maryland with her husband to operate their own farm near Wye Mills, until returning back to Wall Township five years ago. Mrs. Maynard was a homemaker, loving wife and mother to her beloved family. Mrs. Maynard attended Allenwood Church and Wye Mills United Methodist Church, where she was also a member of the Homemakers Club and Queen Anne’s County Maryland.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years, Alfred William Maynard; son an daughter-in-law John W., Sr and Stella Maynard; daughter and son-in-law Barbara A. and Malcolm Turdo; grandchildren John W. Maynard, Jr., Lori Fong, Peter A. Maynard, David A. Turdo, Daniel J and Timothy P. Maynard; great-granddaughter Nelea K. Fong; and former daugher-in-law Geri K. Maynard and her brothers Charles Lister and John Paul Lister.

A funeral service will be held at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township tomorrow at 1 p.m., followed by committal at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls. Relatives and friends will be received tomorrow from noon until service time.

Bernice M. Fox

Point Pleasant resident Bernice M. Fox, formerly of Brielle, died Monday, April 18 in the Claremont Care Center, Point Pleasant.

She was 102 years old.

Born in Sunday Cove Island, Newfoundland, she arrived in New York City in the early 1900’s. Mrs. Fox moved to Brielle, where she resided for 50 years.

She is survived by her daughter Sandra Fox, Brielle; grandchildren Daniel Palmiere, Holly Steinberger and Cindy Haron; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. in Greenwood Cemetary, Brielle. Funeral arrangements were from The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

Florence ‘Sunny’ Gunn Blake

Toms River resident Florence “Sunny” Gunn Blake, a loving mother and grandmother who has family in Brielle, died Tuesday, April 26, at home.

She was 78 years old.

Born in Moorestown, she lived in Pennsylvania until she retired from the Philadelphia National Bank as a branch manager. After retiring from the bank, she moved to Toms River to be close to her children and grandchildren.

She was a graduate of Moorestown Friends School and Wilson College. Sunny loved to play field hockey and was an avid sports fan. She was often found in the stands at Manasquan High School sporting events. She also worked as a volunteer for the Contact crisis hotline.

Sunny was predeceased by her parents, Florence Engle Jefferis and Warren Harper Jefferis; and her husbands, John K. Gunn III and Sidney S. Blake Jr.

She is survived by her children, son Peter M. Gunn, Jackson; daughter Susan G. Parker and son-in-law Charles W. Parker, Brielle; and granddaughters Jaime and Courtney Parker, Brielle.

Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Church of St. Uriel the Archangel, 219 Philadelphia and 3rd avenues, Sea Girt.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Vitas Hospice Charitable Fund, 1 Meridian Road, Suite 5, Eatontown 07724, for their excellent care and support.

Helen Frances Pflum

Spring Lake resident Helen Frances Pflum died Tuesday, April 19 in the Manor by the Sea Nursing Home, Ocean Grove.

She was 81 years old.

Born in raised in Chicago, she moved to Spring Lake many years ago. Mrs. Pflum was a counselor for the Schaeffer Treatment Center, Toms River, for many years before retiring in 1988. She was a communicant of St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake. Mrs. Pflum was a past president of St. Catharine School Parent Teacher Association, past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of Monmouth Medical Center, a trustee and secretary of the Shoralan Club, Belmar, a member of the Spring Lake Garden Club, and volunteered at the Epiphany House, Asbury Park. She also attended the Little Company of Mary Nursing School, Chicago.

Mrs. Pflum was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Sara O’Malley, and a grandson, Christopher E. Pflum.

She is survived by her sons, Dr. Gerald E. and his wife Evelyn A., Bradley Beach, Dr. Francis A. Jr. and his wife Patricia, Navesink, and Gregory T. and his wife Peggy Weigle, Corrales, N.M.; daughters Marjorie A. Nealson and her husband William J, Neptune City, Bernadette C. Williams and her husband William, Coconut Creek, Fla., and Carolyn M. Nealson and her husband Aloysius G., Ocean Grove. Mrs. Pflum also leaves a sister Mary Kill, Palos Heights, Ill., 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.
