Robert Morris
Allentown, Pa., resident Robert Roy Morris, formerly of Spring Lake, died Thursday, Aug. 5th in Allentown.
He was 75 years old.
Mr. Morris attended Irvington High School and Admiral Farragut Academy. He was a graduate of Muhlenberg College, Allentown.
Mr. Morris was a teacher in the Red Bank school system. He was a former head football coach at Red Bank Regional High School.
He was an avid outdoorsman and fisherman.
He was predeceased by his brothers Barney, Art, and Norm Morris, and his sister, Shirley Neary.
Mr. Morris is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Lyn Morris, Wall Township, and Chad and Bonnie Morris, Brielle; sister, Florence Russomano, West Caldwell; three grandchildren Alicia, John, and Kiersten, and many nieces and nephews.
Private services are from the J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home, Allentown.
Peggy Ivins
Manasquan resident Peggy S. Ivins died Sunday, Aug. 15 in Laurelton Village, Brick Township.
She was 72 years old.
Born in Jersey City, Mrs. Ivins resided in Hightstown for many years. A summer resident of Manasquan since 1936, she and husband moved to Manasquan permanently in 2001.
Mrs. Ivins is survived by her husband of 50 years, Barry W. Ivins; two sons Jamie L Ivins, Douglasville, Ga. and Grady T. Ivins, Norcross, Ga.; a daughter, Julie M. Sudol, Manasquan; three sisters Marlowe Peterman, Virginia Beach, Va., Darryl V. Seltzer, Fla., and Kay Callaghan, Manasquan, and six grandchildren Mandie and Shea Sudol, and Tony, Katie, Suzie, and Nicole Ivins.
Private funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.
Maureen DeFillipo
Brick Township resident Maureen DeFillipo, formerly of Spring Lake, died Sunday, Aug. 8 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.
She was 69 years old.
Born in Harrison, she lived in Nutley and Spring Lake, before moving to Brick in 1999.
Mrs. DeFillipo was employed as a bookkeeper for Phillips Plumbing Supply, Wall Township, for 20 years, before her retirement in 1996.
She was predeceased by her husband Francis DeFillipo in February of 2002.
Mrs. DeFillipo is survived by four sons David DeFillipo, Ocean Township, Gary DeFillipo and Kenneth DeFillipo, both of Brick, and Frank DeFillipo, Wall; two sisters Virginia Marley, Wall, and Patricia Jamiolkoski, Toms River, and twelve grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were from the Carmona-Bolen Home for Funerals, Toms River.
Edith Bryant
Point Pleasant resident Edith “Edie” Polhemus Bryant, formerly of Spring Lake, died Monday, Aug. 16 of natural causes in her home.
She was 75 years old.
A descendent of the White and Polhemus families, original settlers of Monmouth and Ocean Counties in the 17th century, Mrs. Bryant enjoyed a great love of the Jersey Shore. For many years she was an active member of the Manasquan River Yacht Club where she was an avid sailor, tennis player, and participant in the women’s auxiliary.
During her residence in Sea Girt, she became a celebrant at St. Uriel’s Church, later joining the congregation of St. Mary’s Church upon her move to Point Pleasant in 1980.
Following her years as a homemaker, she was employed as an administrative secretary with Merrill Lynch, Wall Township, until 1991 and also assisted with the arcade operations at Gee Gee’s beachfront concession in Manasquan through 2001.
She will be remembered forever for her spirited will to survive many years of health challenges following the loss of a lung to cancer in 1980, as well as the depth of her many friendships and especially for the tremendous love she bestowed upon her grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her brothers Charles, Richard, Edward and Robert.
Mrs. Bryant is survived by her two sons, Frederick and Jeffrey, and their families- Fred’s wife, Jacqueline and their children Sean, Cory, Margaret, and Molly and Jeff’s wife, Barbara and their sons, Robert and Jeffrey. She also leaves behind her sister Mrs. Raymond Steger, Point Pleasant.

Helen Carver
West Belmar resident Helen E. Carver died Tuesday, Aug. 17 in Sharrock Gardens, Brick Township.
She was 89 years old.
Mrs. Carver was a sales clerk for Card-o-Rama in Neptune, retiring in 1984. Prior to this, she worked as a bookkeeper for the Asbury Park Press.
She was a communicant of St. Rose, Belmar, and was a former member of the Catholic Daughters of America.
Mrs. Carver is survived by her husband of 62 years, William F. carver Sr.; two sons Michael A. Shaftsburry, Vt., and William F Carver Jr., Point Pleasant; a daughter Mary Anne Peterson, Point Pleasant, and two grandsons Jonathan and Dylan Carver.

John Rigney
Spring Lake resident John W. Rigney died Monday, Aug. 16 in Jersey Shore Center, Eatontown.
He was 65 years old.
Born in Bayonne, he lived in Linden, before moving to Spring Lake in 1975.
He was employed as a salesman for Process Operators International of Houston, Texas. He worked locally in Spring Lake.
Mr. Rigney was a graduate of Monmouth University, a past member of the Knights of Columbus Council # 371, Bayonne, a communicant of St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake, and a coach for Spring Lake and Sea Girt Little League.
He is survived by his former wife Teresa Bergin Rigney; two sons and their wives, John and Anna, Aspen, Colo. and Brian and Megan, Hoboken; two daughters and a son-in-law, Erin and Craig Wheeless, Redstone, Colo. and Terry Rigney, Aspen; three sisters Dolores Keller, Rosanne Johnson, and Janet Ciencin, and four grandsons Liam, Matthew, and Owen Rigney and Noah Wheeless.

John Gacos
Brielle resident John C. Gacos, C.L.U., formerly of Springfield, died Sunday, August 8 in his home.
He was 79 years old.
Mr. Gacos’ career spanned over 50 years as an independent insurance broker and agent with the New York Life Insurance Company. He was a graduate of the American College of Life Underwriters and a member of the Million Dollar Round Table and the Chairman’s Council of New York Life.
Born and raised in Jersey City, he was a graduate of Dickinson High School and the United States Maritime Academy at Fort Trumble, New London, Conn., where he received his officer’s commission. During World War II he made trans-Atlantic crossings to the European and North African Theatres and carried supplies to our Allied Troops on the beachheads of France immediately following the D-Day invasion of Europe.
Mr. Gacos was a resident of Springfield for over 30 years, where he served his community as Chairman of the Springfield chapter of the American Red Cross, a member of the Board of Education, and a sponsor of many youth athletic sports. As an active Rotarian, and a Paul Harris Fellow, his passion for travel took him all over the world, visiting international chapters. He was a founding father of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Westfield and served on the parish council.
Mr. Gacos was a 50 year member of the AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association), the American Legion Hellenic Post 440 and the Adoniram-Highland Wakefield Rising Star Lodge #80 of the Free &Accepted Masons.
He was an active outdoor sportsman, enjoying skiing, hunting, and sportfishing, and an enthusiastic participant of the United States Power Squadron, with whom he spent summers cruising with his family.
Mr. Gacos is survived by his former wife, Frances Gonis Hayes; a daughter and a son-in-law, Cathy Renee and Herbert Vinnicombe; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Chris and Frances Gacos, Jamie and Kathy Gacos, John Gacos II, and Peter and Nicolette Gacos; eleven grandchildren five great-grandchildren; his sister, Dorothea Polychronis and a brother and a sister-in-law Sophokles and Olga Gacos.
The family would like to thank the physicians, nurses, and the staff at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and all his health care providers.

Neil Monello
San Francisco resident Neil Monello died Saturday, July 31.
He was 51 years old.
He was born in Paterson. He moved to San Francisco 25 years ago, where he was the principal in the Cupertino, Calif. School District. He was also an assistant professor at San Francisco State University.
Mr. Monello earned a bachelor of arts degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University, Madison and his masters in education from Rutgers University, New Brunswick.
Mr. Monello began his career in education as a primary grade teacher in the East Windsor School District.
Surviving are his parents, Benjamin and Josephine Monello, Spring Lake; sisters, Maria D’Errico and her husband, James, Wayne, Joy Kane and her husband, Richard, Wall Township; nieces and nephews, Amy and Louis Pellegrini, Julie and Adam Palazzolo, Erica, Jacqueline, and Benjamin Kane, and Zachary Pellegrini. He is also survived by his lifelong friend, Michele Friedman of Englewood, Fla.

John Byrne
Dublin resident John Byrne, formerly of Manasquan, died Tuesday, August 3 in Ireland.
He was 21 years old.
Mr. Byrne was working in Dublin as a painter with his uncles for their family business.
He was a graduate of Manasquan High School and attended Brookdale Community College.
Surviving are his mother, Siobhan Byrne, sister, Erin Byrne, and brother, Cody Byrne, all of County Cavin, Ireland, formerly of Manasquan, and his father, Mark Byrne of Matawan. He also leaves behind his beloved girlfriend, Jillian Rhoades, Spring Lake Heights; his aunts and uncles, Karen Byrne, Patti Byrne, Bonnie Fitzgerald, Glenn Thorn, Geri and Gary Wainwright, and cousins, Sean Kevin and Brian Fitzgerald, Lindsay Thorn, Caitlin Thorn, Jessica and Matt Ludwig, Barry, Bevin, and Courtney Subocz, Danielle and Kyle Wainwright, Amy and Greg Tanella, and James and Kathy Thorn, as well as numerous friends and relatives in Ireland where funeral services are being held.
A memorial service was given from the O’Brien Funeral Home. Wall Township.
Robert Jahn
South Belmar resident Robert F. Jahn died Monday, August 2nd in his home.
He was 83 years old.
Mr. Jahn was born in Newark and lived there until moving to South Belmar in 1965. He spent his winters in Ft. Meyers, Fla.
He owned and operated Jahns Florists in Newark which was founded by his great-grandfather in the 1880’s. His son, Robert, is the fourth generation in the family business, which he recently sold.
He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Newark and the Elks Club of Newark. He was a Mason for over 50 years and a member of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Kentucky.
He served in the U.S. Army where he was stationed at Fort Knox after World War II.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marie Jahn.
Mr. Jahn is survived by his daughter and her husband, Barbara and Thomas M. McCarthy, Brick Township; his son and his wife, Robert F. and Kristine Jahn, Ft. Meyers, Fla.; his grandson, Robert Kristoffer Jahn of the West Point Military Academy and his dear companion, Becky Montgomery, Ft. Meyers, Fla.

Fred Kurtz
Spring Lake Heights resident Fred Kurtz died on Thursday, August 5 in his home.
He was 76 years old.
Born in Brooklyn, he lived in Yonkers for 39 years before coming to Spring Lake Heights 11 years ago.
Mr. Kurtz was employed as an electrician at Otis Elevator Corp. for 39 years before retiring.
He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the Sea Bees and was a communicant of St. Margaret’s Church, Spring Lake.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jean Frances Carroll Kurtz and his daughters, Gloria and Jeanine Kurtz. He also leaves his sister, Emma Tamberella, his step-brothers, Frank and Bill Kuehner, a brother-in-law, Charles Carroll, and sisters-in-law, Mary Manthey, Anne and Adrienne Carroll.
