William “Kenny” McTague

Spring Lake Heights resident William “Kenny” McTague died Tuesday, Nov. 23 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 68 years old.

Born and raised in Vailsburg, Newark, he lived in Florham Park and Allenhurst, before moving to Spring Lake Heights 25 years ago.

Mr. McTague was employed as a detective for the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, Newark, for 25 years and upon retirement, he was an investigator at the New Jersey State Racing Commission, Trenton.

He was a graduate of Seton Hall Prep, Seton Hall University, and was a member of the Seton Hall Alumni Association.

Mr. McTague was a U.S. Navy veteran and had graduated Naval Flight School, Pensacola, Fla. He was a communicant of St. Catharine’s and St. Margaret’s Church, Spring Lake. He was also a member of the John F. Cryan Association, Newark, and was an avid fan of thoroughbred racing.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Veronica Ann McTague; three daughters, Sharon and Kenneth Hart, of Lanoka Harbor, Suzanne Whitten, Pittsburgh, Pa., and Moira and Patrick Scholl, Neptune; two sisters, Mary Alice and Michael Ennis, Middletown, R.I., and Kathy and Thomas Hindman, Spring Lake Heights; eight grandchildren, Ryan, Bridget and Kelsey Hart, Collin and Garrett Whitten, and Ryley, Eoin and Delaney Scholl, and his dear friends, Buddy Keegan, John Flynn and John Cryan.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105-1942.

James Perez

Belmar and Bradenton, Fla. resident James Perez died Thursday, Nov. 25 in Jersey Shore University Hospital, Neptune.

He was 81 years old.

Born in Newark, Mr. Perez moved to Belmar in 1961 and had wintered in Bradenton, Fla. for many years.

He retired in 1985 after 40 years as a maintenance supervisor for PSE&G, of Harrison.

Mr. Perez was a member of the Union Chapter No. 7 Royal Arch Masons, Irvington; a former member and elder of the Presbyterian Church, Newark; a member of the retirement club of PSE&G, Harrison; the West Coast Club, Florida, and a member of the Mercedes Club of Florida.

He is survived by his wife, Hope Carbonell Perez; one daughter and son-in-law, Maria and James Burt, Belmar; sister-in-law, Madeline Rivera; one nephew and his wife, Al and Joyce Vieiro; one great-nephew, Alan Vieiro, and two great-nieces, Donna Vieiro and Denise Cother.

Funeral arrangements were from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar.

Frank C. McCarthey

Brielle resident Frank C. McCarthey died Friday, Nov. 26 in Geraldine Thompson Care Center, Wall Township.

He was 77 years old.

Mr. McCarthey resided in Brielle for 37 years.

He owned and operated the Orange Machine and Manufacturing Company, founded in 1888 in Point Pleasant. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a machinist mate in the Pacific theater.

Mr. McCarthey is survived by his wife of 52 years, Joan Anne McCarthey; two sons and their spouses, Frank and Nancy McCarthey, Woodbridge, Va., and Bill and Dana McCarthey, Bellingham, Wash., and five grandchildren, Jason, Jenny, Katy, Mike and Cory.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

Andrew Wolthoff

Sea Girt resident Andrew Wolthoff died Tuesday, Nov. 23 three days shy of his 90th birthday.

He was 89 years old.

His family and friends rejoice in the wonderful memories of his happiness and his joy during the birthday celebration held for him by his daughters earlier this month.

Before his retirement to Sea Girt, Mr. Wolthoff was employed by the Ridgewood News and the Newark Star Ledger in northern New Jersey retiring in 1978 after 25 years.

He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, especially the Choir of St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt, where his tenor voice rang clearly during Sunday services.

Mr. Wolthoff was predeceased by his wife, Susan Carofola Wolthoff in 2003.

He is survived by his daughters, Susan and Alan Diamond, Bonita Springs, Fla., Eileen Avia, Wyckoff, and Mary and George Borab, Sea Girt; his brothers, Raymond, St. Petersburg, Fla., and George, Cape Haze, Fla.; two sisters, Alice Glover, Beaufort, S.C. and Florence Sposato, California; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and his favorite dog, Hunter.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, Dec. 20 at 9:30 a.m.at St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt followed by entombment in St. Catharine’s cemetery, Wall.

Funeral arrangements are from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

Donations in his name may be made to the Choir of St. Mark’s Church, 215 Crescent Parkway, Sea Girt, toward their new organ.

Edward C. Morris

Brielle resident Edward C. Morris died Saturday, Nov. 27 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 82 years old.

Born in Paterson, Mr. Morris lived in Totowa before coming to Brielle.

Mr. Morris served as a communications supervisor for the New york City Police Department before retiring.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving as a surgical technician and was awarded the Asiatic Pacific and European African and Middle Eastern Service medals.

Mr. Morris was predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Adele Morris, in 2003 and by his son, Secret Service Agent Edward Morris in 1979.

Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall Township.

Mildred Elizabeth Smith Hopkins

Harrogate, Lakewood resident Mary Elizabeth Smith Hopkins, a longtime Spring Lake and Brielle resident, died Sunday, Nov. 28 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 97 years old.

Born on February 27, 1907 in Newark, Mrs. Hopkins was the only child of Frederick Ruliff Smith and Louise Kuhn Smith of Somerville.

She graduated from Somerville High School in 1925 and from Trenton Normal School. She then taught fourth grade in Manville and Raritan and from 1957 to 1967 she taught second grade in Spring Lake Heights Elementary School, where she was the first president of the teacher’s association.

Mrs Hopkins was a longtime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Governor William Livingston Chapter, where she was vice-president and secretary. She was also secretary of the Spring Lake Woman’s Club and a member of Unity Church, Neptune.

Mrs. Hopkins was predeceased by her husband, Wilson M. Hopkins, in 1976.

She is survived by her two sons, Wilson McKinney Hopkins Jr., Toms River, and Robert Noll Hopkins, Lexington, Va.; a daughter, Ann Louise Hopkins, Freehold; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral, Manasquan.

A Memorial Service will be held today at 11 a.m. at The Unity Church by the Shore, 3508 Asbury Ave., Neptune.

Liliane M. Collini Schultz

Manasquan resident Liliane M. Collini Schultz died Sunday, Nov. 28 in Sunnyside Care Center, Wall Township.

She was 78 years old.

Born in France, Mrs. Schultz came to the United States in 1946.

She was a homemaker, hospital volunteer and a sales clerk for Steinbach’s, Ocean Township, for 18 years. She was a woman of vision and courage who will be missed by those who loved her. She resided in New Jersey since 1975.

Mrs. Schultz was predeceased by her husband, Joseph.

She is survived by her five children and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

Marjorie Combs Thorn

Sea Girt resident Marjorie Combs Thorn died Monday, Nov. 29 in her home.

She was 76 years old.

Born in Manasquan, Mrs. Thorn has resided in Sea Girt for 52 years.

A graduate of Manasquan High School, she was the office administrator for A.T. Glenn Thorn and Sons Plumbing and Heating. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Thorn was predeceased by her husband, Glenn Thorn, in 1994.

She is survived by her children, Glenn and Bonnie Thorn, Sea Girt; Raymond and Peggy Thorn, Sea Girt; Suzanne Wheeler, Brick Township; 14 grandchildren, James Thorn, Amy Tanella, Brian, Sean and Kevin Fitzgerald, Lindsay Thorn, Mark, Matthew and Steven Wheeler, Jessica Ludwig, Caitlin Thorn, Ted, Patrick and Kerry Weiland and her great-grandchildren, Nicholas Tanella, Alexander Thorn, and soon to be baby Ludwig.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

Paul Grosso

Wall Township resident Paul Grosso, formerly of Little Ferry, died Friday, Nov. 26 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 77 years old.

Born in New York City, Mr. Grosso lived in Little Ferry for many years before moving to Wall 11 years ago.

Mr. Grosso was a bus driver for Domenico Bus Service n Bayonne for many years before retiring.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Grosso was a member of the Italian American Club in Ocean Township.

He was predeceased by his wife, Gertrude S. Garofano, in 1996.

Mr. Grosso is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Judith, Greenwood Lake, N.Y., and Ralph and Rose, Seaside Heights; brothers, David, Vincent, and Joseph, all of Florida; aunts, Mary Sabados, of Lodi, and Millie Mirra, of Cresskill; grandchildren, John, Pamela, Mike and Janis and great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Shane, Jason and Brandon.

The funeral will be followed by military honors and committal.

Albert T. Manovill Sr.

Bridgewater resident Albert T. Manovill Sr., whose son and daughter-in-law live in Manasquan, died Friday. Nov. 26 in his home.

He was 92 years old.

Born in Staten Island, N.Y., Mr. Manovill lived in Somerville before moving to Bridgewater in 1950. He enjoyed summers in Manasquan for many years.

He was employed with James Condo and Son, Somerville, since 1950 and retired in 1974. He was also a former dispatcher for Elmer Brewer Oil Co., Somerville.

Mr. Manovill was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II serving in the European and Pacific theaters and retired in 1952 as a captain in the Army Reserves Corps of Engineers. He was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Church, Martinsville.

He was predeceased by a son, Alan Manovill, in 1976.

Mr. Manovill is survived by his wife of 57 years, Veronica Condo Manovill; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and James Beckwith, Somerville; son and daughter-in-law, A. Timothy Manovill Jr. and Donya, Manasquan, and grandchildren, Michael Alan and Katherine Ann Beckwith and Libby Manovill.

Funeral arrangements were from the Cusick Funeral Home, Somerville.
