Evelyn Graff
Spring Lake resident Evelyn C [nee Karcher] died Tuesday, April 19 in Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch.
She was 67 years old.
Born in Perth Amboy, she lived in N.Y.C. before moving to Spring Lake 35 years ago.
She had been employed as an Administrative Assistant for Harry W. Graff Inc., N.Y.C. and later for Karcher Inc., Eatontown, retiring in 1997.
She was a member of the American Association of University Women, the League of Women Voters, the Spring Lake Historical Society, the Spring Lake Garden Club, the Sayreville Historical Society, a founding member of the Shoralan Club, a volunteer for the VNA [Visiting Nurse Association], and active in the Manasquan Watershed Commission.
Mrs. Graff was predeceased by her husband Harry W. Graff in 1989.
She is survived by her three sons John S., Boca Raton, Fla., Jeffrey D., and James H. both Tartu, Estonia; her sister Rosemary Karcher Reavey, Spring Lake; and her many nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home.

Eileen Walker
Spring Lake Heights resident Eileen Calzaretta Walker died Tuesday, April 27 in her home.
She was 49 years old.
Born in Jersey City, she lived in Hazlet before moving to Spring Lake Heights nine years ago.
She was employed as a cashier at Shop Rite, Belmar.
Mrs. Walker is survived by her daughter Lisa Bankes, Brick; her grandchildren Tiffany and Hailey Bankes; her father Robert Calzaretta, Spring Lake Heights; her brother Robert Calzaretta, Texas; and her sister Lauren Calzaretta, N.H.
Services will be held by the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, April 30.
Elizabeth Harry
Manasquan resident Elizabeth Howarth Harry died Tuesday, April 17 in Sunnyside Manor, Wall.
She was 94 years old.
She was a life-long resident of Manasquan.
She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
She was also a member of the Auxiliary of Manasquan Fire Co. No. 1 and the Manasquan First Aid Squad.
Mrs. Harry was predeceased by her first husband, John E. Howarth, who died in 1980, and her second husband, Charles A. Harry, who died in 2002; and her brother Williard “Caddy” Nock.
She is survived by her niece Cheryl and husband Don Matthews, Manasquan; her nephew David Nock, Germantown, Md.; and her great nieces Stephanie and husband Timothy Smith, Lisa and husband Christopher Fluck, and Jodi and husband Richard Collins.
Services will be held by Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan at 2 p.m. today, Thursday, April 29.
Contributions in Mrs. Harry’s memory may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 6 Osborne Ave., Manasquan or to the Manasquan First Aid Squad, 65 Broad St., Manasquan 08736.
Henry Hansen
Manasquan resident Henry S. Hansen died Wednesday, May 5 in Meridian Hospice, Brick.
He was 86 years old.
Born in Staten Island, N.Y., he moved to Manasquan in 1968.
He belonged to the Citizens Military Training Corps and then served with the Corps of Engineers of the United States Army during World War II and Korea. He retired from the Army Reserve in 1952.
He also worked as an inspector for the U.S. Customs Service, retiring in 1977 after 25 years.
He attended the First Presbyterian Church, Manasquan, the Old Guard of Point Pleasant and the F. & A. M., Spring Lake Lodge.
Mr. Hansen is survived by his wife of 64 years, Muriel Zimmer Hansen; his daughter and son-in-law Carole and Michael Cross, Brookhaven, N.Y.; his three grandchildren Amy, Chad and Jeffrey Cross.
Services will be private with interment in the U.S. National Veterans cemetery, Calverton, N.Y. The Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan is in charge of arrangements.

Helen O’Neil
Lakewood resident Helen O’Neil died Wednesday, May 5 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.
She was 93 years old.
Born in Harrison, she lived in Point Pleasant and Spring Lake Heights before moving to Harrogate, Lakewood.
She was employed as a Bookkeeper at Jersey State Bank, Jersey City.
She was one of the original Communicants of St. Martha’s Church, Point Pleasant and was a member of the St. Martha’s Beehive, AARP and the Sewing Guild at St. Mark’s Church, Sea Girt.
Ms. O’Neil was predeceased by her brother Joseph O’Neil.
She is survived by her two sisters Mary O’Neil, Harrogate, Lakewood, and Anna Rue, Forked River; her three nieces Kathleen O’Neil, Avon, Anne Brennan, Forked River, and Maureen Esposito, Barnegat Light; and her grand nieces Kathryn Esposito, Susan Sadowski and Mary Beth Esposito; and her great grandniece Anna Sadowski.

Thomas Carrie
Wall resident Thomas Carrie died Tuesday, May 4 in Geraldine Thompson Care Center, Wall.
He was 86 years old.
Born in Hackensack, he lived in Wall since 1959.
He retired in 1983 as a bridge inspector for Monmouth County.
He was a World War II Army veteran.
He was a member of the Freehold Elks Lodge and the Wall Republican Club.
Mr. Carrie was predeceased by his wife Julia E. in 2001.
He is survived by his daughter Mary Ann Townsend, Mesa, Ariz.; his two granddaughters and a great grandson Julia and Barbara Townsend and Fallon Howard, all Mesa, Ariz.

Helen Penna
Brielle resident Helen Carolyn [nee Courtney] Penna died Sunday, May 2 in her home.
She was 93 years old.
Born in Boston, Mass, she lived in Avon before moving to Brielle in 1950.
She and her husband owned and operated the Avon Inn, Avon, which was owned by the Penna Family for over 90 years.
She was a member of the Brielle Flower Club, an artist and an avid reader always with a book at her side.
A mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend; she was beloved by all who knew her.
Mrs. Penna was predeceased by her husband S. Thomas “Bud” Penna Jr. on May 17, 2000; her parents Eric and Carolyn [nee Graham] Courtney; and her brother Eric Courtney.
She is survived by her daughters Carolyn Penna Winchester, Passa Grille, Fla., and Katharine Stephens Penna, Wall; her granddaughter Amanda Winchester Summer; her four grandsons Philip “Sam” Winchester, James, Wesley and David “Digger” Erbe; and her great grandson Austin Winchester.
A private committal has taken place. Relatives and friends will be invited to a Memorial Service at an announced date in the future. Arrangements are under the direction of the O’Brien Funeral Home.

Robert Tompa
Spring Lake resident Robert J. Tompa died Wednesday, May 5 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
He was 82 years old.
He lived in Belleville before moving to Spring Lake in 1947.
He graduated from Bordentown Military Institute in 1940. He received his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College, Hanover, N.H., in 1944; his master’s degree from Montclair State College, Upper Montclair, in 1950, and his Ph. D from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, in 1964.
He served his country in World War II, first in the Marine Corps, and later in Army Air Corps Intelligence. He served as Historian at Hickman Air Force Base, Hawaii, and was honorably discharged in 1946.
He began teaching in 1955 at Monmouth College [now Monmouth University] when it was known as Monmouth Junior College, operating out of Long Branch High School. He was Professor of Economics and Professor Emeritus at the time of his retirement in 1990. He served as Chairman of the Department of Business Administration for 14 years and established the school’s MBA program.
Dr. Tompa was predeceased by his wife, Rita Galdiero Tompa, in 1985.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Peter Tompa and Kelly Goode, Washington, D.C.; a daughter and son-in-law Carol and Michael Tuzzio, Spring Lake; and four grandchildren Katie, Christopher, Annie and Bobby Tuzzio.

Jeannette Baker
Lakewood resident Jeannette M. Baker died Tuesday, May 4 in Laurelton Village Center, Brick.
She was 88 years old.
Born and raised in Newark, she moved to Belmar in 1946 and then to Lakewood in 1986.
She was a 1934 graduate of Berringer High School, Newark.
She was a switchboard operator and receptionist at the Spring Lake Heights Hospital from 1948 until it closed in 1969.
She was a former Communicant and member of the Altar and Rosary Society of St. Rose Church, Belmar. She was a member of the St. Mary’s Guild of Leisure Village and a Communicant of St. Dominic’s Church, Brick.
Ms. Baker is survived by her twin sister Minnette H. Baker, Lakewood; her cousin Helen Brady and her children Glenn and Kathleen Brady; and her dear friend Lois Leiser.
