William Gallagher
Brick resident William L. Gallagher, whose cousin lives in Manasquan, died Thursday, April 15 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.
He was 93 years old.
Born in Paterson, he resided in Brick for the past 30 years.
He was a graduate of New York University.
He was the Vice President of Investment for New York Life, retiring after 45 years of service.
He was a Communicant of St. Dominic Church, Brick.
Mr. Gallagher is survived by his cousin Oliver Hill, Manasquan; and by his several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

Bernita McCormick
Bayville resident Bernita J. McCormick, who was an active member of the Belmar Women’s Club, died Thursday, April 15 in Keswick Pines Care Center, Whiting.
She was 84 years old.
Born in Denton, Mont., she eventually moved to Belmar and lived there for 50 years before moving to Keswick Pines for the last nine years.
She was a graduate from Denton H.S. and received her Bachelor Degree from Montana State Univ., Bozeman, Mont., and served her internship in dietetics’ in Oakland, Calif.
She founded the Home Economics Dept. at St. Rose H.S., Belmar. She taught Home Economics at Asbury Park H.S. and the Asbury Middle School, retiring in 1980. She also taught Home Economics in South Dakota and Washington.
She was a Communicant of St. Rose Church, Belmar.
She was an active member of the Belmar Women’s Club and won several writing awards on the state wide Women’s Club level.
She was a Lieutenant in the Army Medical Corp serving as a dietitian in France during World War II.
Mrs. McCormick was predeceased by her husband Lawrence J. in 1969; her son John A. in 1994; and her parents John Peter and Nelly Gladys Lahr.
She is survived by her two daughter’s and son-in-law Kathleen McCormick, Bayville, Linda and Donald Tonyes, Philadelphia; and several cousins in Montana and Iowa.
Funeral arrangements were from the Reilly Funeral Home.
Evelyn Pinnella
Manasquan resident Evelyn Louise [nee Meli] Pinnella died Friday, April 16 in the presence of her family.
She was 77 years old.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. she lived in Manasquan for the past 53 years.
Affectionately known by her students as “Miss Evelyn” she had been employed as a Music and Kindergarten teacher at the Brookside School, Sea Girt for 32 years retiring in 1996.
She had pursued a Psychology Degree at Caldwell College in 1992 and had studied music with John Tate and Vera Collins.
Mrs. Pinnella was predeceased by her parents Joseph A. and Louise [nee Guma] Meli; and her brother U.S. Army Corps first Lt. Joseph A. Meli.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years Frank A. Pinnella; her seven sons and daughter-in-laws Joseph J. and Tracy, Santa Barbara, Calif, Donald F. and Cheryl, Littleton, Colo., Stephen K. and Terry, Cairo, N.Y., Jeffrey D. and Terri, Brielle, David R. and Mary Beth, Manasquan, Michael G. and Jennifer, Milltown, and Kenneth, Fort Collins, Colo.; her sister Eleanor Mitarotonda, Levittown, Pa.; and her 18 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home.

Helen Barry
Spring Lake resident Helen Haytko Barry died Thursday, April 8 in Claremont Care Center, Point Pleasant.
She was 91 years old.
Born in Jersey City, she lived there most of her life before moving to Spring Lake 11 years ago.
She was employed by the Jersey City Welfare Department for 27 years, retiring in 1977 as Deputy Welfare Director.
She was a member of the Jersey City Business and Professional Women’s Club.
Mrs. Barry was predeceased by her husband Lawrence J. Barry in 1961; her brothers William, Alexander, and John Haytko; and sisters Sally Koneski and Catherine Cahill.
She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law Laurelene and Peter Weiler, Oyster Bay, and Bernadette Barry, Spring Lake; her sisters Mary Mulpeter and Anne McGuire, both Middletown; her grandchildren Peter Weiler and Pamela Wilson; her great grandchildren Kate, William, and Charles Weiler and Hailey, John, and Torie Wilson; and her many nieces and nephews.

William Gorden
Neptune City resident William T. Van Gorden died Thursday, April 15 in Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.
He was 58 years old.
Born in Newton, he resided in South Belmar for 18 years before moving to Neptune City two years ago.
He was employed as a member of the Kitchen Staff at Christie’s Restaurant, Ocean. Prior to kitchen work he was employed as the parking lot supervisor at Weinstein’s Liquors for 18 years.
Mr. Gorden was predeceased by his father and mother William T. and Helen [nee Hartz] Van Gorden; and his sister Gladys Van Gorden.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years Barbara [nee Hale] Van Gorden; his two sons William T. Van Gorden Jr. and Jack and his wife Lisa Van Gorden, Neptune City; his four sisters Mary Malave, Middlesex, Alice Van Gorden, Calicoon, Pa., Patricia Rivera, Puerto Rico, Dee Borrero, Brick; his three brothers Donald, S.C., Richard, Somerville, and David, Farmingdale; and his granddaughter Laurie Petalon.
Services will be held by the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 24 for friends and relatives.
Committal will be private at the convenience of the family.
Leonard Cheesman
Manasquan resident Leonard E. Cheesman died Tuesday, April 20 in his home.
He was 98 years old.
He was employed as an engineer at Bell Labs. While there he worked on the first laser project.
He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America and the Manasquan Elks Lodge.
He and his late wife owned and piloted their own plane out of Teterboro Airport.
Mr. Cheesman was predeceased by his wife Patricia W. [nee Ruscoe] Cheesman in Jan. of 1999.
Services will be held by the O’Brien Funeral Home, Hwy 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, April 22 for friends and relatives.
Committal will be private at the convenience of his family.
Josephine McDonough
Belmar resident Josephine C. Finneran McDonough “JoJo” died Tuesday, April 13 in her home.
She was 85 years old.
Born in East Orange, she lived there before moving to Newark in 1946 and later to Belmar.
She graduated from The McAllister School of Embalming, N.Y.C. in 1941.
She and her late husband founded and operated two funeral homes, The McDonough Funeral Home, Newark, from 1947 until 1996, and a second of the same name in Belmar in 1974, which she managed up until her death.
During World War II, she served as an air raid warden in East Orange.
She was a Communicant of the Church of St. Rose, Belmar.
She was a member of the combined St. Rose Rosary and Altar Societies and the Primetimers, Belmar.
She was a member and past president of Our Lady of Good Counsel Rosary Society, Newark.
She was a troop and den leader of the Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts, Newark.
She was a former coach of Our Lady of Good Counsel’s High School Girls’ Basketball Team and part-time physical education teacher for Our Lady of Good Counsel Grammar School, Newark.
She was a member of the Women of Irish Heritage of the Jersey Shore, Immaculate Conception High School Alumni Association, Montclair, the Parish School Alumni of Our Lady of Good Counsel, Newark, the AARP of Monmouth County, the Independent Irish Society and the New Jersey Funeral Directors Association Monmouth & Ocean Chapter.
Affectionately known as “JoJo” from childhood, one of her true joys was an annual family reunion, which she began in 1966 and hosted with few interruptions until last summer.
Mrs. McDonough was predeceased by her husband Paul A. McDonough Sr., in 1998; her daughter Kathleen B. McDonough Benz; her granddaughter Kathleen Ann Ewanyk; her two sisters Anna M. O’Rourke and Margaret I. Hollywood; and her only brother Joseph Finneran.
She is survived by her four daughters Mary Jo C. McDonough, Belmar, JoAnn E. Hacket, Brielle, Patricia A. McDonough, Bernardsville, and Colleen B. McDonough, Salem, Ore.; her son Paul A. McDonough Jr., Belmar and N.Y.C.; her two son-in-laws Roger D, Andrus, Bernardsville, and John T Ewanyk, Salem, Ore.; her six grandchildren Justin, Sarah, Michael, David, and Molly Andrus, and Lauren Ewanyk; her two sisters and brother-in-law Kathleen A. Young, Spring Lake Heights, and Clare I and Frank Prime of Bradley Beach; and many nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces.

Francis Fowler
Reno, Nev. resident Francis A. “Frank” Fowler died Sunday, March 14 in his home.
He was 54 years old.
Born in Neptune, he lived in Wall before moving to Reno, Nev.
He was a Sergeant with the Reno Cannon International Airport Police.
Prior to Reno Airport Police duties he was a patrolman with the Manasquan Police Department, firearms instructor for the Monmouth County Police Academy, deputy for the Washoe County Sheriff’s Department, including S.W.A.T. and C.S.I. and a certified drug recognition expert, Police Academy Instructor and insurance fraud investigator for the Nevada Attorney General’s Office.
He is survived by his wife Diana Fowler; his step-son Mark Houge; his two daughters Kathleen Fowler and Susan Oliverio; his sister Mary Risden; his two grandaughters Brittany Stevenson and Linda Oliverio; and his grandson Anthony Oliverio.
Friends and relatives may call at the First Baptist Church of Manasquan, 41 South Street, on Saturday, May 1 from 1 to 1:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Contributions in Mr. Fowler’s memory may be made to your favorite charity or to the American Cancer Society. Anne Murphy
Spring Lake Heights resident Anne M. Brophy Murphy died Thursday, April 22 in her home.
She was 69 years old.
Born in the Bronx, N.Y. she lived in Westchester County before moving to Spring Lake Heights nine years ago.
She was a legal secretary for the law firm of James P. Shea, Esq. of Yonkers, N.Y. before retiring.
She was a Communicant of St. Catharine’s - St. Margaret’s Church in Spring Lake.
She enjoyed reading, dancing, walking, playing bocci, and spending time surrounded by family and friends.
Mrs. Murphy was predeceased by her brother John Brophy.
She is survived by her husband of 42 years Timothy J. Murphy; her son Timothy P. Murphy, Chatham; her grandchildren Meaghan, Brian, Kerrianne, Joanmarie, and Patrick Murphy; her sister Eileen Doran, Westchester, N.Y.; and her nieces and nephews, William Doran, Eileen Slattery, Kathleen Clarke, Maureen Houlihan, and Sean Doran.
Funeral arrangements were from the O’Brien Funeral Home.
A memorial mass will be held on Saturday, May 8 at 11 a.m. in St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake.
