Arthur Colabella Jr.

Howell Township resident Arthur Colabella Jr., whose sons live in Brielle, died Tuesday, April 29 in his home.

He was 82 years old.

He was a 1942 graduate of Pennsylvania Military College.

Mr. Colabella was the owner/operator of Hoffman's Marina, Brielle, until retiring in 1973.

He was a volunteer with Brick Hospital and the New Jersey Department of Fish and Wildlife, and was an exempt Brielle fireman.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 1st infantry division known as "The Big Red One," and was a Purple Heart recipient.

Mr. Colabella enjoyed many hobbies, including fishing, hunting, world travel, horses, gardening, and raising several award winning German Shorthaired Pointers.

He was perdeceased in 2000 by his wife, Muriel.

Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur and Kathleen, and Joseph and Patricia, all of Brielle, and Todd and Maria, Point Pleasant; one daughter and son-in-law, Toni and Frank Martyn, Brick Township; one sister, Ada Garis, Manasquan; and nine grandchildren, Krissy, Diana, Kelli, Matthew, Katie, Kimberly, Michael, Nicole and Todd.

Private funeral arrangements are from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan. Friends are invited to join the family for a celebration of Mr. Colabella's life from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 5 in the Elk's Lodge, Arnold Avenue, Point Pleasant.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Colabella's memory may be made to the Elks Handicapped Children's Fund, 820 Arnold Ave., Point Pleasant, 08742.

Michael J. O'Donnell

Belmar resident Michael J. O'Donnell died Monday, April 28 in Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 61 years old.

Born in Newark, Mr. O'Donnell lived in Belmar for most of his life.

He was a 1959 graduate of Manasquan High School.

He was employed as a skilled carpenter and was a 25 year member of Local No. 2250 Carpenter's Union, Red Bank, retiring in 1997. He was a former member of the Dockbuilders Union Local No. 1456 for 10 years, and was a member of the Belmar Police Department from 1964-1968.

He was an exempt member of the Belmar Goodwill Fire Department, and served as a Belmar. recreation soccer coach.

He was a Navy veteran, serving from 1958 to 1963.

He loved the outdoors, playing football and baseball, riding his bike, fishing, and relaxing. He enjoyed the beach with his family, and traveling with his wife and friends, most recently to Ireland.

He was predeceased by his parents, Evelyn and John O'Donnell, his in-laws, Louis and Eleanor Catalano, a nephew, Adam O'Donnell, and a brother-in-law, Stephan Catalano.

Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Nancy J. Catalano O'Donnell; two sons, Kevin and his wife, Stephanie, Belmar, and Patrick and his partner, John Hudson, New York City; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dennis and Donna, Jacksonville, Fla., and Timothy and Patricia, Point Pleasant; two grandchildren, Leigh Kelsey and Dylan O'Donnell, Belmar; three brothers -in-law and their spouses, Louis, Vincent, and Paul Catalano; several nieces and nephews; and many lifelong and loving friends.

Funeral arrangements are from the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar. Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow in St. Rose Church, Belmar.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. O'Donnell's memory may be made to the St. Rose Building Fund, 607 7th Ave., Belmar, 07719.

John E. Dowling

Sea Girt resident John E. "Jack" Dowling died Wednesday, April 23 in Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 80 years old.

He earned a bachelor's degree in banking and finance from NYU, graduating magna cum laude.

He was the chairman of the board and CEO of Westchester Financial Services Corporation. He introduced many services including the first money market account offered by a bank, the first student loan in the United States, and the first Federal Home Loan Bank inner-city loan.

Jack was an elder in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church, and with his wife, Ruth, was instrumental in founding the church in Westchester County.

He was the president of the Westchester County League of Savings Associations, chairman of the New York League of Savings Institutions, NYS governor of the National Council of Savings Institutions, and a trustee of the NYS Bankers Retirement System.

He was founder, director and vice-president of the New Rochelle Development Council, served as president of the Downtown Association, commissioner of the Housing Authority, director of the Chamber of Commerce, president of the Rotary Club, trustee of the Boys Club, and director of the Community Chest for 15 years, all of New Rochelle, N.Y.

Jack was the director of the YMCA, treasurer of the Executive Committee of Junior Achievement, a member of the Advisory Committee of the NYS Higher Learning Assistance Corporation, and a board member of the Hutchinson River Council of the Boy Scouts of America, all of Westchester County.

He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II, serving as a master sergeant in the South and Central Pacific.

In retirement, Jack enjoyed playing golf and was an avid fan of the Manasquan High School football team.

Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Ruth; one son, John; two daughters, Betty and Barbara; three grandchildren, Jason, Heather, and Jaimee; and two great-grandchildren, Elianna and Aaron.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

Contributions in Jack's memory may be made to the Salvation Army.

Tyson Colby Smith

Memorial Service

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service for Tyson C. Smith.

It will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 10 in Memorial cemetery, St. John's Church, Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. [516-692-6748].

Tyson died Feb. 8. He was the son of Craig and Carole Hauck Smith, Naples, Fla. Mrs. Smith was formerly of Manasquan.

Carmine A. Maria

Wall Township resident Carmine A. Maria died Saturday, May 31 in his home.

He was 54 years old.

Mr. Maria was born in Bayonne and lived there for 35 years, moving to Lawrenceville 12 years ago then to Wall Township during the past six months.

He was a Stationary Engineer at the Quakerbridge Mall in Lawrenceville for the past 16 years, and he was the man responsible for keeping the mall running.

Mr. Maria graduated from Bayonne High School Class of '66. He was a member of IBE Local 68 Operating Engineers of West Caldwell.

He is predeceased by his parents Domoinick Anthony and Helen Turon Maria.

Surviving is his wife of 20 years, Patricia McInerney Maria; 3 sons, Jason, who is stationed with the US Army at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD, Justin, Wall, and Charles, Somerset; one step daughter, Dorothea Shelley, East Brunswick; one brother, Domoinick Anthony, Belford; 2 sisters, Catherine Dillion, Atlantic Highlands, and Denise Vogel, Agawam, MA. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Visitations will be at 2 p.m. June 7, followed by a 3 p.m. Memorial Service all at the Reilly Funeral Home, Belmar.

Dorothy Koehler

Ormand Beach, Fla. resident Dorothy Elizabeth Koehler, formerly of Belmar, died Tuesday, May 27.

She was 92 years old.

Mrs. Koehler is the widow of Leo J. Koehler, to whom she was married for 34 years. She is the loving mother of her late son, Donald J. Koehler.

She is survived by a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, as well as many, many friends.

Mrs. Koehler was a gracious lady. Her strength, love, humor, and wisdom were cherished gifts for all who received them. She was a lady of tremendous and often anonymous kindness. Her many acts of charity and goodness live in the hearts of those she touched with her generous heart. Her accomplishments were many, and her love of people surpassed the bounds of race, color or creed, providing an example that will continue to teach all who mourn her passing for years to come. Legally blind in recent years, Mrs. Koehler knew that what was essential to life could only be seen clearly with the heart. Her laughter, love, patience and goodness were hallmarks of a life well lived.

Gardner Attlee

Spring Lake resident Gardner Attlee died Thursday, May 29.

He was 81 years old.

Mr. Attlee grew up in Watchung, and graduated from North Plainfield High School. He then served in the U.S. Navy aboard the battleship the U.S.S. Tennessee, in the Pacific theatre. His battleship provided cover for the U.S. Marines at Mount Suribachi and suffered a series of attacks from Japanese kamikaze planes from which he sustained lifelong hearing disability.

After the war he graduated from Syracuse University and began a career in education that spanned 33 years. He taught English at Manasquan High School. He retired as principal from Ocean Township High School after serving an 11 year term.

Mr. Attlee was an avid fisherman and member of Trout Unlimited, Manasquan Elks Lodge No. 2534 and Salt Water Sportsmen. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Manasquan.

Mr. Attlee is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen, and his daughter Tracy, a Washington D.C. Society photographer.

Funeral arrangements were from the O'Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

Lester Ward Harvey

Tampa, Fla. resident Lester Ward Harvey Jr., formerly of Spring Lake, died Thursday, May 22 at home.

He was 59 years old.

Mr. Harvey was raised in Spring Lake and graduated from the University of Tampa, was General Manager of the Allaire Hotel, a Stock Broker for Goodbody & Company, and later Vice-president of Kennedy Mortgage Company. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Marge; three sons, Lester III and Timothy, both of Louisville, KY, and Matthew, Tampa; two grandsons, Louisville, KY.; mother, Emma, Spring Lake Heights, and his brother, Kenneth Menken, New York City. He is also survived by many sisters and brothers-in-law and several beloved nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions can be made in Mr. Harvey's memory to the ALS Foundation.

June A. Whitehead

Spring Hill, Fla. resident, June A. Whitehead, formerly of Manasquan, died Saturday, May 31.

She was 81 years old.

Mrs. Whitehead was born and raised in Wall Township before moving to Manasquan in 1948. Then, in 1991 she moved to Leesburg, Fla.

She was a homemaker and also worked in the cafeterias of Manasquan schools. Prior to moving to Florida she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliaries of the Manasquan Elks, Manasquan Fire Company No. 2, and the local chapter of Deborah Hospital. After moving to Florida she was active in many organizations in her community including the Hawthorne Kitchen Band. She was a member of Leesburg United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Whitehead was predeceased by her husband Edward L. Sr. in 1989 and a son, Richard W. in 2001.

She is survived by 2 sons, Edward L. Jr., Clermont, Fla., and Robert D., Wellington, Fla.; one brother, Oscar D. Morton, Wall; 4 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the Brewer and Son Funeral Home, Spring Hill, Fla.

Memorial contributions can be made in Mrs. Whitehead's name to the Crippled Children's Fund of the Manasquan Elks, P.O. Box 256, Manasquan, 08736.
