Emma Ricci

Manasquan resident Emma Ricci died Tuesday, Jan. 21 in New York Presbyterian/Cornell Medical Center, New York City.

She was 90 years old.

Born in Staten Island, N.Y., Mrs. Ricci moved to Manasquan 22 years ago.

She was a loving mom and homemaker.

She was a communicant of St. Denis Church, Manasquan.

She was predeceased by her husband, Pasquale Ricci, her parents, Antonio and Filomina DeRosa, one brother, Joseph DeRosa, and three sisters, Rachel Lisita, Angelina Maria, and Anna DelGrosso.

Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Joseph A. and Carolyn, Cutchogue, Long Island, N.Y.; one daughter and son-in-law, Anne Marie and Edward J. Rotondi, Teaneck; and two grandchildren, Taryn Rotondi and Lea Ashley Ricci.

Funeral arrangements were from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan.

Clara E. Huebscher

Brick Township resident Clara "Betty" E. Gardiner Huebscher, formerly of Wall Township, died Friday, Jan. 24 in Laurelton, Village, Brick.

She was 89 years old.

Born in Asbury Park, Mrs. Huebscher was a lifelong resident of Wall.

She was a homemaker.

She was a communicant of St. Mark's Church, Sea Girt, and of the church's Altar Rosary Society.

She was a member of AARP and the South Monmouth Senior Citizens Club.

She was predeceased in 1996 by her husband, Carroll F. Huebscher.

Surviving are two daughters, Claire Reber, Brick, with whom she lived, and Carol Anastasia, Hampstead, N.C.; six grandchildren, Regina Young, Point Pleasant, Mark and Douglas Reber, Brick, Jacqueline Jones and Jennifer Connerly, Ormond Beach, Fla., and Dr. Brian McKevitt, West Des Moines, Iowa; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were from the O'Brien Funeral Home, Wall.

Contributions in Mrs. Huebscher's memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 801 Broad St., Shrewsbury, 07702.

Brian J. Thornton

Wall Township resident Brian Joseph Thornton died Tuesday, Jan. 21 in his home.

He was 46 years old.

Born in Orange, Mr. Thornton lived in South Orange before moving to Wall in 1989.

He was a graduate and member of the alumni of the State University of New York at Morrisville, N.Y.

He was a member of St. Catharine Church, Spring Lake, and he was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, South Orange, where he served as a eucharistic minister for a number of years.

He was a member of the sales team at Monmouth Building, Middletown.

He was predeceased in 1984 by his father, Edward J., and in 1989 by his brother, Sean.

Surviving are his mother, Lois E. Keenan Thornton, Wall; four brothers, Thomas, Florida, James, New York, Edward, Morristown, and Peter, Georgia; four sisters, Colleen Thornton, Denmark, Susan Conlon, Wall, and Carolyn Thornton and Joann Matos, Both of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and 14 nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were from the Paul A. McDonough Funeral Home, Belmar.

Contributions in Mr. Thornton's memory may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Grand Central Station, New York, N.Y. 10163.

Paul Richard LaVance

Manasquan resident Paul Richard LaVance died Monday, Jan. 27 in Sunnyside Manor Nursing Home, Wall Township.

He was 72 years old.

Mr. LaVance was a lifelong resident of Manasquan.

He was a graduate of Manasquan High School, where he was captain of the school's football team.

Mr. LaVance retired as Chief of Police of the Manasquan Police Department in 1989 after 33 years of service.

He was a member of the Monmouth County Chiefs of Police Association and the International Chiefs of Police Association. During his career he belonged to the PBA, Local 50, and in 1979 he became a charter member of the newly formed Local 284 in Manasquan.

He was a life member of the Manasquan First Aid Squad and had served as the squad's treasurer.

He was a Navy veteran and served during the Korean conflict.

Mr. LaVance was an avid walker and loved spending time in Maine and Florida.

He was predeceased by five brothers and sisters.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Joan Alyce Mayer LaVance; two daughters, Susan Warner and Ellen Fink, both of Manasquan; one brother, David LaVance, Georgia; two sisters, Carol Anderson, Virginia, and Gloria McEntee, Pennsylvania; and three grandchildren, Aubrey Warner, Taryn Fink and Travis Fink.

Funeral arrangements are from the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan. Visiting will be 6 to 8 p.m. tonight in the funeral home. Visiting will also be 2 to 4 p.m. tomorrow in the funeral home, followed by a funeral service at 4 p.m.

Contributions in Mr. LaVance's memory may be made to the Manasquan First Aid Squad, 65 Broad Street, Manasquan, 08736.

Fredrick P. Potter Sr., a lifelong resident of Point Pleasant, died last Wednesday, at home.

He was 74 years old.

He dedicated his life to the members of Teamsters Local 469 in Perth Amboy, now Hazlet, and to improving the quality of life for New Jerseyšs working families. He was an active member of Teamsters Local 469 for over 32 years, serving as a shop steward and as an officer and business agent of the local from 1966 to May 1982 when he retired as vice president. He was a member of the committee that established Teamsters Local 469šs Welfare Fund in 1954. He also worked to establish Teamsters Local 469šs Pension Fund in 1959. Teamsters Local 469 today has approximately 3,500 active members and over 1,100 living retirees collecting a monthly pension from its pension fund.

He was a member of New Jersey and Central Jersey Teamsters Retiree Club. His son, Fredrick P. Potter Jr., is now the principal officer of Local 469, and also the Ocean County Democratic chairman.

He was one of the original members establishing Point Pleasant Fire Company 2, and a life member of Point Pleasant Elks Lodge 1698. He was a member of the Elks for 35 years. He also assisted the coaches of the Point Pleasant Golden Elks Pop Warner Football League for a number of years.

He was a devoted husband for over 55 years marrying Mildred 'Cookie' McCormick on Sept. 22, 1946.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred 'Cookie' Potter, on April 8, 1999 of heart failure; his mother, Pearl Anderson; his father, Fredrick P. Potter, chief of police in Point Pleasant; and a brother, Terry Potter.

Surviving are a son, Fredrick Potter Jr. of Point Pleasant; three daughters, Phyllis Lower of Lake Mary, Fla., and Pearl Connolly and Paulette Kilmartin, both of Point Pleasant; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, 901 Beaver Dam Road, Point Pleasant, is in charge of the arrangements.

Irene M. Smith, of Point Pleasant, died last Wednesday at the Worthington of Brick, Brick.

She was 96 years old.

She was a communicant of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Point Pleasant Beach.

Born in Perth Amboy, she lived in Glen Gardner, New Brunswick, before moving to Point Pleasant 13 years ago.

She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Joseph A., in 1972.

Surviving are a niece and her husband, Irene and Richard Hansen of Point Pleasant.

Pable-Evertz Funeral Home, 901 Beaver Dam Road, Point Pleasant, is in charge of the arrangements.

Jeanne Frances Tyler,, of Monterey, Calif., formerly of Bay Head, died on Feb. 1, at Hospice House, Monterey.

She was 75 years old.

She was a legal secretary.

She was a free spirit and animal lover who had many friends.

Born in Orange, she lived in Carmel, and was formerly of Greenwich Village, N.Y., and Bay Head.

Surviving are two brothers, James R. Berger of Riverside, Conn., and William H. Berger of Mantoloking; three nieces and three nephews.

At the familyšs request, no services will be held.

Contributions are suggested to the Hospice Foundation, P.O. Box 1798, Monterey, CA 93942.

The Paul Mortuary, Pacific Grove, Calif., is in charge of arrangements.

Anna F. Zezula,, of Brick, died last Thursday, at Claremont Care Center, Point Pleasant.

She was 92 years old.

She was owner and operator, along with her late husband, of the Point Pleasant Bakery, Point Pleasant, for 20 years before retiring in 1960.

She was a member of St. Dominic's Roman Catholic Church, Brick.

Born in Searing, N.Y., she lived in Point Pleasant Beach before moving to Brick 26 years ago.

She was predeceased by her husband, Emile, in 1976.

Surviving are a son, E. John Zezula of Brick; a daughter, Dianne Johnson of Brick; a brother, Stanley Drasba of New York; two sisters, Mae Lipnicky and Sophie Sosnowski, both of New York; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

There will be no viewing hours, as she donated her body her science.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of onešs own choice.

Colonial Funeral Home, Brick, is in charge of the arrangements.

Victoria T. Fitts, of South Orange, formerly of Lavallette, died on Feb. 4 at St. Vincents Nursing Home, Cedar Grove.

She was self-employed as a health care consultant for 20 years, retiring October of 2000.

She was a member of Church of the Saviour where she was treasurer for five year and taught Sunday school. She was also a member of St. Marthašs Guild, Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Newark and Metropolitan Opera Guild. She was a NASCAR fan.

She graduated from Hunter College in 1965 as a liberal arts major.

Born in Pelham, she lived in Rockaway and Lavallette, before moving to South Orange in July 2002.

Surviving are her husband, William C. Fitts; three brothers, Charles of New Rochelle, NY, Joseph of Eastchester, NY, and Andrew of Brewster, NY; and many nieces and nephews.

Norman Dean Homes for Services, 16 Righter Ave., Denville, NJ, is in charge of the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, donations to ALS Association of Greater NY, 116 John St., Suite 1304, NY, NY 10038.
