Lawrence Rotondi, 59; headed Little Ferry school board in strike
Dated Wednesday, October 25, 2006
Lawrence F. Rotondi, who was president of the Little Ferry Board of Education at the time of the borough's last teachers' strike in 1991, died Sunday. He was 59.
Mr. Rotondi, a publishing executive who moved to Brick Township from his native Little Ferry three years ago, served two terms on the school board, from 1986 to 1992.
Olga Lanum, secretary to the Little Ferry schools superintendent and a 27-year district employee, said Mr. Rotondi's measured demeanor served him well during the 10-day walkout, in which the teachers defied a Superior Court judge's back-to-work order.
"It was a tough time, and he handled the strike well," Lanum said. "He was a calm, articulate man capable of getting his point across in a nice way. He thought before he spoke."
Mr. Rotondi co-owned Christopher's Flower Shop on Liberty Street in Little Ferry with his wife, Jamie, from 1997 to 2005.
"My mom managed the shop day to day, and he would help out with everything from deliveries to billing," said daughter Gabrielle Rotondi-Ryan of Point Pleasant.
Mr. Rotondi also had been a vice president and coach with Little Ferry/South Hackensack Girls Softball.
At the time of his death, Mr. Rotondi, working out of Bow Tie Inc.'s Allenhurst office, was publisher of Dogs in Review, a California-based monthly magazine for the show dog industry.
Tammy Gincel, an advertising sales representative for the magazine, said her boss had a particular fondness for Westies and enjoyed attending dog shows as part of his publishing duties.
From 1992 to 2004, Mr. Rotondi was publisher of Gifts & Decorative Accessories magazine in Manhattan.
In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Rotondi is survived by another daughter, Jenna Rotondi of Brick; a sister, Rosalie Rossi of Pompton Lakes; and three granddaughters, Francesca, Annabella and Juliette Ryan.
Visitation is today from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Thomas Gentile Funeral Home in Hackensack. The funeral Mass is Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Margaret of Cortona R.C. Church in Little Ferry. Burial follows at Greenwood cemetery in Brielle.
