The Rev. Gregory Colucci, longtime Paterson priest
Dated Wednesday, October 18, 2006
The Rev. Gregory R. Colucci, a dynamic priest known by parishioners for his charismatic sermon style, died Saturday. He was 78.
Before retiring in 1998, Father Colucci was parochial vicar of St. Joseph's R.C. Church in Paterson -- a mostly Latino parish. That assignment was a return to his roots: Father Colucci served as administrator of the inner-city parish in the 1970s before taking on other assignments in the diocese.
The Rev. Robert Wisniefski, current pastor of St. Joseph's, remembered Father Colucci as a resourceful administrator and wise, spiritual mentor.
"For me, personally, Father Gregory was like a spiritual father figure," said Wisniefski, who knew him for nearly 30 years. "He was my first pastor when I was ordained."
Though he had a preaching style that grabbed parishioners' attention, the prist also had a calm demeanor that left its mark on many who knew him.
He served as a New York City Police Department auxiliary chaplain and in the weeks following the 9/11 World Trade Center attacks, he could be found at the site, helping rescue workers cope. Wisniefski served with him as a chaplain at Ground Zero.
"He had a cool, relaxed demeanor," Wisniefski said "He was able to get through to the police, fire and EMS responders who were responding to the disaster."
In the years between his St. Joseph's assignments, Father Colucci was pastor of Paterson's St. Michael's Church, Our Lady of Fatima Church in Passaic -- where he established a feed-the-homeless program -- and St. Margaret Church in Morristown. Ordained in 1955, he was a licensed language teacher and taught at Morris Catholic High School. He also was chaplain of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception in West Paterson in the early 1990s.
Even after retirement, Father Colucci stayed involved with St. Joseph's. The 800-family parish, Wisniefski said, is a welcoming community, in large part, because Father Colucci reached out and got people involved.
"People here loved him and will miss him dearly," Wisniefski said.
He is survived by a sister, Lucy Geraci of Rocky Point, N.Y., and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mass will be said Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, Paterson, with burial at Calvary cemetery in Paterson. Visiting is today from 1 to 10 p.m. at St. Joseph's Church. Arrangements are by Vander Plaat Funeral Home, Wyckoff. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph's Church.
