Anthony Corbiscello; once toured with Frank Sinatra
Dated Tuesday, January 17, 2006
Swing band leader Anthony Corbiscello, who once opened for Frank Sinatra, died Sunday night at his home in Harrington Park after a long battle with cancer. He was 53.
"Tony," as he was known by his friends, was a drummer and the leader of the Tony Corbiscello Big Band, which backed such entertainers as Bob Hope, Jerry Vale, Clark Terry and Joni James. And through the years, his band performed at such venerable concert spaces as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center.
"He was a very special kid, and he was talented from a little child," said his father, former Fort Lee Mayor Nicholas Corbiscello, 86. "His incredible talent was only surpassed by his love for his friends and his family. He was a very dedicated musician, and he always treated his musicians fairly."
Mr. Corbiscello, a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University, became an accomplished musician under the tutelage of Sonny Igoe, an alumnus of the legendary Benny Goodman and Woody Herman Orchestras. And it was his ability to play the drums in the styles of both Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich that led to his opening for Frank Sinatra's final world tour in 1992.
"Tony was a wonderful person [who] would do anything for you," said Martin Pizzarelli, 42, a bassist who performed with Mr. Corbiscello on the Sinatra tour. "He had a great sense of humor, and he always knew how to light up a room."
His father said Mr. Corbiscello just loved music and loved to perform.
"He was so eager to please people," the elder Corbiscello said. "When he was entertaining he used to say, 'Dad, I'd work for nothing just to see the smile on people's face as they enjoyed my music.' "
Besides his father, he is survived by his wife of 23 years, Ellen Croker Corbiscello; his mother, Ann, and a sister, Maria Corbiscello.
Visitation will be at the Vander Plaat Memorial Home, South 113 Farview Ave., Paramus, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. A funeral Mass will be held 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Sacred Heart Church, 12 Terrace Ave., Rochelle Park.
