Dr. Jehu Cooper III dies at 58;
services held at St. Clement's
MATAWAN - Dr. Jehu Cooper III of 96
Main St., a prominent physician
in the area who practiced
medicine from a wheelchair
for 27 years, was buried
Monday at Fairview Cemetejty,
Middletown, after services
had been held at St. Clement's
Church.
Dr. Cooper died Friday at
age of 58.
He was paralyzed with polio
1949, a year after opening
lis private practice in Mata-
?an, but he continued his
tctive medical work until
irlier this year.
He was born in Great Falls,
Mont., and lived in Anaconda,
Mont., and Metuchen before
moving to Matawan 30 years
ago.He was a graduate of the
Loyola University School of
Medicine, Chicago, where he
was a member of the Phi Beta
Pi medical fraternity.
He served his internship and
residency at St. Michael's
Hospital, Newark, was a reserve
officer in the Army at
Mason General Hospital,
Brent wood, L.I., and attended
the School of Military Neuropsychiatry.
Before taking up his private
practice in Matawan in 1948,
he was a resident in pathology
at St. Michael's Hospital.
He also served on the staffs
at Riverview and Bayshore
Hospitals, the Matawan school
system, and the Old Bridge
Police Dept. He was formerly
on the medical staff at the
Nike Base in Holmdel and was
head of the medical section of
the Matawan Civil Defense
Council.
Dr. Cooper was a member of
the American Medical Assn.,
the Monmouth County Medical
Society, the Matawan
Rotary, American Legion
Post 176 (Matawan), and the
Sons of the American Revolution.
He was a communicant of
St. Clement's Church and the
widower of Jean Cooper, 'who
died two years ago.
Surviving are two daughters,
Mrs. Richard Marrin of
Lincroft and Pamela of Matawan;
a son, Jehu IV; a sister,
Elizabeth Ann of Matawan;
his mother, Mrs. Jehu Cooper
II; and six grandchildren.
The Day Funeral Home,
Keyport, was in charge of the
arrangements.

Services to be held
for W. Vanderbilt,
former bus driver
HAZLET - Services were to be held
today for William VanderbiLt, 74, of 387 Middle Rd., a retired
bus driver, who died Saturday.
He was to be buried at
Green Grove Cemetery, Keyport.
Mr. Vanderbilt worked as a
bus driver for Public Service
for 40 years. After his retirement
in 1974, he was a
crossing guard at the Middle
School, Hazlet.
He was a member of the
North Centerville Fire Co.,
Hazlet, and the Fire Police of
the'Hazlet Area.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret;
a son, William of Melbourne,
Fla.; and two grandchildren.
The Bedle Funeral Home,
Keyport, is in charge of
arrangements.

Services held
for Kathleen Shaw,
40-year resident
KEYPORT - Services were held Monday
for Mrs. Kathleen Shaw of 11
Luppatatong Ave., a 4Q-year
resident of the borough.
Mrs. Shaw died Friday at
the age of 75. She was buried
at Green Grove Cemetery.
She was born in Matawan
Township.
Surviving are a son, Allan of
Plainfield; a daughter, Mrs.
Marie Figoni of Old Bridge;
four grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.
The Bedle Funeral Home
was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Elsie Smith,
lifelong Keyporter,
dies at age 94
KEYPORT - Services were held Thursday
for Mrs. Elsie Smith of 500
Broad St., who lived all 94
years of her life in Keyport.
Mrs. Smith died Tuesday,
Dec. 7, at the Arnold Walter
Nursing Home, Hazlet.
Born in Manasquan, she was
the widow of Thomas Smith,
who died in 1952.
She is survived by a nephew.
Arrangements were made
by the Bedle Funeral Home.

Services to be held for retired salesman Thomas Mulligan
KEYPORT - Services were to be held
today at St. Joseph's Church
for Thomas Mulligan of Green
Grove Avenue, a retired car
salesman, who died Monday
at the age of 67.
Mr. Mulligan moved to
Keyport four years ago from
Jersey City. He was an Army
veteran of World War II and a
communicant of St. Joseph's
Church.
He is survived by his wife,
Ann; a son, Thomas Jr. of
Monmouth Beach; a daughter,
Mrs. Roseann Mulrain of
Hazlet; and three grandchildren.
The Day Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.
Burial will be at Holy Name
Cemetery, Jersey City.
