Merlin N. Johnson, World War II veteran
BELLE MEAD -- Merlin N. Johnson, 75, died Thursday (May 3, 2001) in the Princeton Nursing Home.
He was born in Jamestown, N.Y. where he lived for 43 years. Merlin and his family moved to Belle Mead in 1969. Merlin worked for Seidman and Seidman CPA firm and served as general manager of National Worsted Mills in the Jamestown area before the mill closed.
After moving to New Jersey, he commuted to New York for 25 years working as a controller in the textile industries. Merlin served as a sergeant in the 291st Forward Observation Battalion of the field artillery in the European Theater in World War II, taking part in the Normandy invasion.
Throughout the years, he was active in community organizations serving in various capacities in the National Accounting Association, Rotary club and the American Legion in the Jamestown area, and the Hillsborough-Montgomery Lions Club, Princeton Elks and Montgomery Senior Citizens.
Merlin was predeceased by his parents, Nellie and Merton Johnson of Jamestown and his oldest son, Neil Johnson, in 1991.
Surviving are his wife, Anne, a.k.a. Nancy; his daughter, Lynn Crann; two grandsons, Jay and Patrick Crann of Berea, Ohio; his son Bruce Johnson of Franklin Park; his daughter-in-law, Wilma Moynihan; two grandchildren, Karen and Daniel Johnson of Somerset; his sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Robert Watson of Springfield, Va.; and his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Patricia and Clifton Forsberg of Jamestown.
A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Hillsborough Funeral Home, 796 Route 206, Hillsborough. The Rev. Christine Reed of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Princeton will officiate. Cremation will be private.
Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to your favorite charity in Merlin's name.

Adorth Hill Sr., U.S. Army Sergeant
PLAINFIELD -- Adorth Hill Sr. staff sergeant, 76, died Friday (May 4, 2001) in the Veterans Hospital in East Orange.
Mr. Hill was born in South Hill, Va. in 1924. He was a resident of Plainfield for 31 years after moving here from Denver in 1968.
Mr. Hill was a staff sergeant in the United States Army for 25 years. After retiring from the Army in 1968, he worked as a electrician for Muhlenberg Hospital for 16 years, retiring in 1985. Adorth was also a member of the Plainfield American Legion, Post 0219. Mr. Adorth loved helping his neighbors and was known to his friends as Mr. Fix-it.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Sophia (Cannon) Hill of Plainfield; his son, Adorth Hill Jr. of Plainfield; his three daughters, Sylvia and her husband, Bill Pendarvis, of Oklahoma City, Amona and her husband, Sam Tabikh, of Watchung and Aurora H. and her husband, Sebastian D'Elia, of Elizabeth; his sisters, Beatrice Payne of Bronx, N.Y., Patty May Baskerville of Arlington, Va., Margaret Felder of Washington, D.C. and Arlene Thomas of South Hill, Va.; and his grandchildren, Christopher and Lisa Pendarvis, and Chad and Zachary Tabikh. He is also survived by a host of family and friends.
A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Higgins Home for Funerals, 209 W. Eighth St., Plainfield. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Scotch Plains. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Barbara C. Zemaitis
FANWOOD -- Barbara Connor Zemaitis, 71, died Thursday (May 3, 2001) at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick. Born in Newark, she lived in Irvington, Union and Abadan, Iran, before settling in Fanwood 41 years ago.
Mrs. Zemaitis was an active member of the Exxon Annuitants Club and the Westfield YMCA. She was also a lifelong member of the Lilies.
Mrs. Zemaitis was predeceased by her husband, Joseph P. Zemaitis.
Surviving are two sons, Joseph and Gerald; two daughters, Patricia and Kristine; and three grandchildren, Peter, Andrew and Zachary.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, and 11 a.m. to noon Monday at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave., Fanwood. The procession will leave at noon from the funeral home for Fairview Cemetery, East Broad Street, Westfield, where a graveside service will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Jean MacGregor Stephens, retired secretary
PLAINFIELD -- Jean MacGregor Stephens, 86, of Plainfield died Saturday (May 5, 2001) at the Country Arch Nursing Home in Pittstown. Mrs. Stephens was born in Dalmuir, Scotland, and came to the United States in 1927. She resided in Newark and Irvington before moving to Plainfield 52 years ago.
Mrs. Stephens was a graduate of the Newark Normal School and worked for over 26 years as a secretary for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in New Brunswick before retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Scotch Plains Baptist Church and was a volunteer at Muhlenberg Hospital and a Girl Scouts leader, both in Plainfield, for many years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert T. Stephens Sr., in 1981.
Surviving are sons, Robert T. Stephens Jr. of Green Brook, Craig W. Stephens of Clinton; her daughters, Jean S. Mazet of Green Brook, Roberta A. Schroff of Peoria, Ill., and Pamela J. Grausso of Scotch Plains; her brother, William D. MacGregor of Bayville; her grandchildren, Heather Wellech, Rebecca, Shannon and Ainsley Stephens, Gary R. Mazet, Arthur J. Schroff III, David and Robert Schroff, Lisa Barutcu, Kristin D'Alfonso and Elizabeth Grausso; and one great-grandchild, Alexis Wellech.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave., Fanwood. Interment at Hillside Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations to either the Clinton Rescue Squad EMS or the Green Brook Fire Department EMS would be appreciated.

Norman H. Rodgers Sr., self-employed route man
PLAINFIELD -- Norman H. Rodgers Sr., 76, died Thursday (May 3, 2001) in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center.
Born in Portsmouth, Va., he lived in the Bronx, N.Y., for 40 years before moving to Plainfield five years ago. Mr. Rodgers was a self-employed route man in the Bronx. He was a former member of St. John's Lutheran Church in the Bronx.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Vera M. Rodgers in 1984.
Surviving are his wife, Audrey Rodgers of Plainfield; a son, Norman H. Rodgers Jr. of Plainfield; a daughter, Vivian Rodgers of Virginia; three granddaughters, Audrina, Danea and Danielle Rodgers, all of Plainfield.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Brown's Funeral Home, 122 Plainfield Ave., Plainfield. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Interment, Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains.

Peter Baglio, hospital administrator
BEDMINSTER -- Peter Baglio, 81, died Friday (May 4, 2001) at his home. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and had lived in Basking Ridge, Manhattan, N.Y. and East Orange before moving to Bedminster 12 years ago.
Mr. Baglio was a hospital administrator having specialized in veterans' health care needs for more than 40 years. He began his career with the Veterans Affairs Hospital of Bronx, N.Y. as an assistant manager trainee in 1946. He served in the VA Hospitals of Baltimore and Brooklyn from 1952 to 1960 as an assistant manager. For four years, Mr. Baglio served as assistant director at Lyons Veterans Administration Medical Center in Bernards Township. In 1964, he assumed the position of associate administrator at Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn and later became vice president of planning. His final appointment was as director of the VA Medical Center in East Orange in 1980 which lasted for 12 years. He retired in 1992.
Mr. Baglio attended Brooklyn College and received his bachelor's in business administration cum laude from City College of New York in 1952. In 1957, he received his masters in hospital administration degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
He was a Fellow of the American College of Hospital Administrators and a member of the American Hospital Association and the American Public Health Association.
Mr. Baglio was predeceased by his first wife, Nancy Vigliotti Baglio in 1960 and by a son, Philip S. Baglio in 2000.
Surviving are his wife, Rose Fresella Baglio; two sons, Peter M. of Hackettstown and Paul J. of Stanhope; a daughter, Patricia Figel of Honolulu; his mother, Josephine Baglio of Lindenhurst, N.Y.; a brother, Michael of Port Ewen, N.Y.; three sisters, Mary Paradiso, Angelina Fiorenzo and Lucy LoBue all of Lindenhurst; and six grandchildren, Peter, Michael, Nancy, Rebecca, Kristofer and Holly Baglio.
The funeral will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Layton Funeral Home, 475 Main St., Bedminster, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass at St. Elizabeth's Church in Far Hills. Interment will be at St. Bernard's Cemetery, Bernardsville. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

DENNIS MAZILLO, AGE 55, AVENEL
Dennis V. Mazillo, 55, died Tuesday at his home in Avenel.
He was born in Newark, and lived in Woodbridge for 15 years before moving to the township's Avenel section one year ago. He was employed by Woodbridge Township in the public works department for the past 15 years. Previously, he worked as a Union County Police detective for 10 years in Westfield. He served in the Army in the military police during peacetime.
He was the devoted father of James M. Mazillo of Cranford and Miss Meredith L. Mazillo of Cranford; dear son of Mrs. Helen (Bladzinski) Mazillo of Clark and the late Leonard Mazillo, and dear brother of Mrs. Carol A. Matthews of Clark.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the funeral at 8:45 a.m. tomorrow at Walter J. Johnson Funeral Home, 803 Raritan Road, Clark, thence to St. Agnes R.C. Church in Clark for a 9:45 a.m. funeral Mass. Interment will follow at St. Gertrude's Cemetery in Colonia. Visiting hours are 2 p.m.-4 p.m. and 7 p.m.-9 p.m. today at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, his family asks that contributions be made in his name to the Woodbridge Police Department Police Benevolent Association or to the Union County Police PBA.

DONALD REED, AGE 69, JERSEY CITY
Donald J. Reed, 69, a lifelong resident of Jersey City, died yesterday at a friend's home in Edison.
Before retiring in 1999, he was an engineer with NJ Transit, Raritan, for 43 years and was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers in Newark. He was a former leader with the Boy Scouts of America in Jersey City.
He is survived by his daughter, Mary Bermudez; two sons, Donald and Christopher; 11 grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Patrick's R.C. Church in Jersey City. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington. Visitation will be 2 p.m.-4 p.m. and 7 p.m.-9 p.m. today at Greenville Memorial Home, 374 Danforth Ave., Jersey City.
