JOHN B. LYLE SR., 72, of Roselle Park, whose daughter lives in Bayville, BERKELEY, died Tuesday at Cornell Hall Rehabilitation Center, Union. He was a warehouseman for Amoco, Carteret, for 20 years, retiring 17 years ago. He was a World War II Army veteran. For more than 40 years, he coached and supported the Roselle Park Youth Baseball League. He was one of the founding members of the Roselle Park Recreation Committee. He was a dedicated servant and president of the Roselle Park Quarterback Club for more than 20 years. He was a member of the Roselle Park Dad's Club and Knights of Columbus Council 3240 of Roselle Park, where in 1988 he was honored as Senior Citizen of the Year. In May 2000, he was voted into the Roselle Park Athletic Hall of Fame. He was president of the Aldene Social Society Especially Sociables for more than 40 years. Born in Brooklyn, he moved to Roselle Park in 1944.
Surviving are his wife, Laura L. Knight Lyle; two sons and daughters-in-law, John B. Jr. and Joan of Albuquerque, N.M., and Steven and Ann of Kenilworth; a daughter and son-in-law, Robin and William Miller of Bayville; and seven grandchildren, John III, Michelle, James, Theresa, T.J., Scott and Christina.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Mastapeter Funeral Home, 400 Faitoute Ave., Roselle Park. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Graceland Memorial Park, Kenilworth. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Roselle Park Dad's Club or the Anthony Signorello Memorial Fund.

JOHN H. HARRIS, 76, of Whiting, MANCHESTER
JOHN H. HARRIS, 76, of Whiting, MANCHESTER, died Wednesday at home. He was a lieutenant with the Glen Ridge Fire Department for 25 years, retiring in 1984. He attended Lehigh University and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He served with the Marine Corps in World War II. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of Camp Glen Gray Old Guard since 1939, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Cedar Grove Post 6255. He was a member of the Firemen's Benevolent Association Local 59, the Exempt Firefighters Association, the National Hole in One Association, and the Pine Ridge Audubon Club. He was a former member of the Pine Ridge Golf Club, the Pine Ridge Old Guard and the Pine Ridge Safety Patrol, all of Whiting. Born in Glen Ridge, he lived there most of his life before moving to Whiting in 1984.
He was predeceased by a brother, James Harris. Surviving are his wife, Anne Milne Harris; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen Harris, Ellen and Daniel Schoch Sr., and Nancy and John O'Reilly; three sons and a daughter-in-law, John Jr., Joseph and Lisa, and Andrew; two sisters, Kathleen Foan, and Barbara Spencer; five grandchildren, Danny, Emily, and Paul Schoch, Brendan and Jacqueline Harris; and 19 nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be noon to 1:30 p.m. today at Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals at St. Catherine Blvd., Toms River. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter, 12 Roszel Road, Suite 201, Princeton, NJ 08540 and the Glen Ridge Volunteer Ambulance Squad. VINCENT LEO, 86, of TOMS RIVER
VINCENT LEO, 86, of TOMS RIVER, died Wednesday at Gateway Care Center, Eatontown. He was a building contractor and developer with T.V. Leo & Sons, a family corporation started in 1902 with his father, Theodore, and his brothers. Then he worked for T.V. Leo Construction Managers & Builders, a family corporation, with his sons and was also a real estate broker with T.V. Leo Real Estate, Fairfield, retiring from all in 1987. He was a member of the Civil Defense Special Police during World War II, and worked as a shipwright, a defense position, in Port Newark. He also sold war bands. He was a parishioner and usher for St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Bloomfield, for 43 years. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1178, and treasurer of the 1178 Holding Co.. He was a parishioner of St. Luke's Church, Toms River. Born in Orange, he lived there, and in Bloomfield for 68 years, before moving to Toms River. He also had a home in Fort Myers, Fla.
He was predeceased by his wife, Josephine Manino Leo. Surviving are two sons, Vincent Leo Jr., and Anthony E. Leo, both of Boonton Township; a daughter, Grace Truppo of West Long Branch; a brother, Frank M. Leo of West Caldwell; a sister, Alba Fastert of Hackettstown; seven grandchildren, Margaret Jean Gallo, Vincent Leo III, Margaret Rose Taraboletti, Sandra H. Deiley, Matthew Truppo, Danielle Truppo and Shawn Truppo; a stepgrandson, Jeffrey Truppo; five great-grandchildren, Anthony Taraboletti, Laura Kaye Taraboletti, Madison Rose Deiley, Clinton Jared Deiley, and Carson Lee Gallo; and two step great-grandchildren, Jacquelynne Gallo, and Brianne Gallo.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at LaMonica Memorial Home, 299 Bloomfield Ave., Bloomfield. Services will be conducted 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Bloomfield. WILLIAM H. SCHWENKE, 79, of Montoursville, Pa., whose son lives in POINT PLEASANT, died Wednesday at Williamsport Hospital and Medical Center, Williamsport, Pa.
Surviving are his wife, Betty J. Wertman Schwenke; a daughter, Canda Leigh Fogarty of Montoursville, Pa.; a son, William Dennis of Point Pleasant; a sister, LaVerna Allshouse of Aliquippa; a brother, Robert G. of Carnegie; and five grandchildren, Brendan Fogarty, Minda Fogarty, Megan Schwenke, Joanna Schwenke and Max Schwenke.
Friends will be received from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until time of service at Faith United Methodist Church, 700 Fairview Drive, Montoursville. Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at the church. Interment will be in Green Lawn Memorial Park. The family will provide flowers. Contributions in memory of William M. Edward Samuel, 73, retired carpenter
SUGAR RUN, Pa. -- Edward Samuel, 73, died Tuesday (May 8, 2001) at his residence in Sugar Run, Pa.
Born June 16, 1927 in Raritan Township, he was the son of the late Adam and Josie Gaboski Samuel.
Mr. Samuel was a retired carpenter. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He lived in Sugar Run, Bradford County, Pa. since 1991. He had previously resided in Neshanic for many years. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 284 in Whitehouse, V.F.W. Post in Manville, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 1829 of Flemington and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 2137 of Somerset.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Virginia Fink Samuel at home; a daughter, Susan S. Aboul-Nasr of Simpsonville, S.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Edward Jr. and Sara Samuel of Landenberg, Pa.; a son, Joseph Samuel, of Westfield; nine grandchildren; six sisters, Loretta Price of Florida, Olga Przewoznik of New Jersey, Helen Ference of New Jersey, Grace Hashim of Florida, Virginia Kutiak of New Jersey and Florence Oleniacz of New Jersey; and a brother, Frank J. Samuel of Pennsylvania.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main St., Flemington. Interment will be in Neshanic Cemetery in Neshanic.

Margaret K. Sargent, grandmother of 16
SOMERVILLE -- Margaret K. Sargent, 99, died Tuesday (May 8, 2001) at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville. She was born in Utica, N.Y., and resided in Fairfield, Maine, before moving to Somerville in 1939.
Mrs. Sargent was formerly employed as a bookkeeper in Maine, and from 1962 to 1965 she was a clerical assistant for the Educational Testing Service of Princeton. Mrs. Sargent was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville.
She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond, former superintendent of the Raritan Woolen Mills, who died in 1960.
Surviving are three sons, Thomas Sargent of Somerville, Raymond Sargent and his wife, Anita, of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Theodore Sargent and his wife, Elizabeth, of Somerville; her daughter, Mary Brettner of Clearwater, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church, 35 Mountain Ave., Somerville. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Piscataway.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service, Monday at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Ave., Somerville. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Immaculate Conception Church, Capital Campaign, 35 Mountain Ave., Somerville, NJ 08876.

Robert T. Casserly, retired AT&T technician
SOMERSET -- Robert Thomas Casserly, 68, died Tuesday (May 8, 2001) at St. Peter University Hospital in New Brunswick after awaiting a liver transplant for approximately three years. He was born in Bronx, N.Y. and lived there until moving to the Somerset section of Franklin in 1964.
He joined the U.S. Air Force at an early age and was assigned to the Communications division during the Korean Conflict. He served four years. After his tour with the Air Force, Mr. Casserly was a telephone technician/ installer for New York Telephone/AT&T for more than 40 years. He was a communicant of St. Mary of Mount Virgin Roman Catholic Church in New Brunswick.
He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Mae Casserly who lived in Bronx, N.Y.
Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Frances Grace Casserly of Somerset; a son, Robert Francis Casserly of Franklin Park; a daughter, Patricia Kelly Sigur of Somerset; a granddaughter, Nicole Elizabeth Sigur of Somerset; a sister, Susan Ungar of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Larry Ungar of Jacksonville, Fla.; two nephews, David Ungar and wife Sherre of South Brunswick, N.C., and Larry Jon Ungar of Jacksonville, Fla.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday from the Gleason Funeral Home, 1360 Hamilton St., Somerset, followed by a 10:30 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Mary of Mount Virgin Church in New Brunswick. Cremation will follow at Franklin Memorial Park in North Brunswick.

Thomas E. Cross Sr., self-employed contractor
BERNARDS TOWNSHIP -- Thomas E. Cross Sr. (Thos), 86, of Basking Ridge, died Wednesday (May 9, 2001) at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown.
Born on Cross Road in Basking Ridge, he lived on the same street throughout his life..
Mr. Cross was a self-employed building contractor in Basking Ridge, establishing what is now Cross Construction in 1948, retiring in 1990. The firm is now owned and operated by his son, Thomas E. Jr. In addition to residential building, Mr. Cross built the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church House and did renovations to the old church. He also did the renovations and addition to the Bishop Janes United Methodist Church, built the second floor on the Liberty Corner School, and later did the school gym and the original portion of the Somerset Hills YMCA.
He was a longtime member of the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church and a member of the former Bernards Township Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his wife, Mabel Emmons Cross; a son, Thomas E. Jr. of Basking Ridge; two daughters, Lois Flannery of Pickerington, Ohio and Janice Zurowski of Coshocton, Ohio; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, J. Austin Cross of Denton, Md. and Donald Cross of Bernardsville.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church, followed by interment at Evergreen Cemetery in Basking Ridge.

RONALD MERCADO, AGE 67, FRANKLIN PARK
Ronald Vincent Mercado, 67, died yesterday at his residence in Franklin Park.
He was born in the Philippines, and lived in Melbourne, Fla., before recently moving to Franklin Park.
He was currently employed by Midland Ross in Bound Brook as an engineer.
He served in the Air Force during the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Marie Mercado; two daughters, Debra Leff and her husband, Richard Leff, of Cranford, and Anne Grimaldi of Woodbridge; his brother, Richard Mercado of New York City, and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the M.J. Murphy Funeral Home, 616 Ridge Road, corner of New Road in Monmouth Junction. Burial will follow at Franklin Memorial Park Cemetery in North Brunswick. Visitation will be from 7-9 tonight only at the funeral home.
