RODGER G. MEANEY SR., 55, of Forked River, LACEY
RODGER G. MEANEY SR., 55, of Forked River, LACEY, died Thursday at home. He was a locomotive engineer for Port Authority Trans Hudson Corp. for 15 years, retiring in 1982. He was a Vietnam War veteran, serving in the Navy. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Forked River, and Rolling Thunder Chapter 2, Ocean County. Born in Metuchen, he lived in Edison before moving to Forked River 20 years ago.
Surviving are two sons, Rodger Jr. of Point Pleasant, and Curt of Hampton; a sister, Doreen Roma of Edison; and a grandchild, Ariana Meaney.
The family will receive friends 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 145 St. Catherine Blvd., Toms River. A funeral service will be offered 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in New Jersey Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown.

SKIP SKOLNIK, 87, of TOMS RIVER
SKIP SKOLNIK, 87, of TOMS RIVER, died Thursday at Community Medical Center, Toms River. He opened Skips Florist, Toms River, in 1949. He was an accomplished designer, having been chosen to decorate the White House for Christmas by presidents Nixon, Carter and Reagan. He was also instrumental in organizing the first Floral Shop at the Smithsonian, Washington, D.C. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II serving with distinction in Naples Flaggia. In June of 1943 he received the Soldier Medal for heroism from Col. Curtis Keen, commander of an A.T.C. base in North Africa. The citation was for saving the life of a crew member of a B-25 that had crashed on take-off, pulling him from the burning wreckage to safety. He was also selected for special assignment flying oil company executives in Middle East to set up oil bases for the Allied invasion. In addition to the Soldier Medal, he received the American Defense Service Ribbon, European, African and Middle Eastern Theater Campaign, four overseas bars, the Bronze Star, and Good Conduct Medal. He was a member of the American Legion and the Jewish War Veterans. Among his many community activities, he was past president of the Toms River Kiwanis Club, where he served for 50 years. He was director on the Board of Florists Transworld Deliveries, or FTD; a member of the Chamber of Commerce; and a member of Congregation B'nai Israel, Toms River. Born in St. Joseph, Mo., he moved to Toms River in 1946.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Shirley Woolf Skolnik; a son, Sanford Skolnik of Toms River; a daughter, Freya Holloran of Pelham, N.H.; five grandchildren, Michelle, Michael, Brandon, Conor and Thomas; a great-grandson, Justin; and several nieces and nephews.
A service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Congregation B'nai Israel, Old Freehold Road, Toms River. Burial will follow at B'nai Israel Cemetery, Toms River. Contributions in his memory may be made to Congregation B'nai Israel, Care fund, Cantor's music fund, Old Freehold Road, Toms River or the hospice program of your choice. Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, Toms River, is in charge of arrangements.

WALTER HUGH EICHOLTZ, 84, of Forked River, LACEY
WALTER HUGH EICHOLTZ, 84, of Forked River, LACEY, died Wednesday at Deborah Heart & Lung Center, Browns Mills. After working as a conductor for the Con Railroad, New York, for 40 years, he retired in 1982. He joined the Navy in 1939 and served for 7 1/2 years. He achieved the rank of chief warrant officer, and saw action in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters during World War II. He actively served on the Sprinkler Committee and Club House Committee, and also participated in the Community Bowling League. He was a parishioner of St. Pius X Roman Catholic Church, Forked River. Born and raised on a farm in Athol, S.D., he lived in Bergenfield and moved to the Pleasant Run Community, Forked River.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Dorothy; a daughter, Karen; and a granddaughter, Shannon.
Visiting will be noon to 4 p.m. Monday at Layton's Home for Funerals, Forked River. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X Church in All Saints Chapel. Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers donations, to Deborah Heart & Lung Center would be appreciated.

Catherine H. Waechter, homemaker
BRANCHBURG -- Catherine H. Waechter, 73, died Friday (May 11, 2001) at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville. She was born in Jersey City and lived in Irvington before moving to Branchburg in 1955.
She was a homemaker and belonged to the Eastern Star organization. She was a member of the North Branch Reformed Church in North Branch.
Surviving are a daughter, Carol Waechter of Branchburg; a brother, Edgar Akerly of Leawood, Kan.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by Speer-Van Arsdale Funeral Home, 10 West End Ave., Somerville.

Charles H. Wachter, services Monday
EATON, OHIO -- Charles H. "Jake" Wachter, 88, died Tuesday (May 8, 2001) at his home in Eaton, Ohio. Born August 26, 1912 in Somerville, he was the son of the late Jacob and Della Hough Wachter.
He retired in 1975 after 39 years of service as a supervisor with Johns Manville Corp. in Manville. He moved to Eaton in 1993 and and was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Gottschalk Wachter in 1996.
Surviving are four nephews, Bill Gottschalk of Clayton, Ohio, John Gottschalk of Kettering, Ohio, Steve Gottschalk of Centerville, Ind., and Martin Gottschalk of Stuart, Fla.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at New Cemetery in Somerville. Arrangements are by Speer-Van Arsdale Funeral Home, 10 West End Ave., Somerville.

Giovanni Gerardo Cuoco, native of Italy
WILDWOOD CREST -- Giovanni Gerardo Cuoco, 70, entered into eternal life on Tuesday (May 10, 2001). He was born in Vallata, Avellino, Italy where he resided before venturing to Venezuela and ultimately coming to the United States, where he resided for the past 39 years.
As a young man, Giovanni started his own business in Venezuela, South America. Then in 1962, he met his loving wife, Lina, while on holiday in America. Destiny played a hand in reuniting childhood friends and natives of Vallata, Italy. Together they ventured and successfully accomplished several business endeavors. Upon retirement in 1989, he retreated to his residence in Wildwood Crest, where he enjoyed the simple pleasures of the seashore life. As his spirit continues to live, he will always be a part of his family's life, and will continue to watch over and safeguard his wife, children and grandchildren.
He began his battle with lung cancer five months ago at his birth place in Italy. After a month in hospitals, he returned to the United States to try to overcome this disease. He fought valiantly, but eventually succumbed to its affliction at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. He was a generous, humble and understanding man who loved his family, and had a great sense of humor. He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and neighbors.
He is predeceased by his parents, Alfonso and Elvira Del Sordi Cuoco, and his mother-in-law, Maria P. Luigina Nufrio.
He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Lina Nufrio Cuoco; two sons, Alfonso and Rocco of Raritan; two daughters, Antonietta "Annette" of Bridgewater, and Luigina Sollazzo and her husband, Paul; and two grandchildren, Giovanna and Santino of Raritan; two brothers, Gerardo and wife Annunziata, and Antonio and wife Sandra of Italy; four sisters, Guiseppina DeCicco, Licia Bove, Ripalda Cuoco, and Liliana Cuoco of Italy; a father-in-law, Rocco Nufrio of Italy; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Bongiovi Funeral Home,on the corner of Bell Avenue and Anderson Street in Raritan, followed by a Funeral Liturgy at 11:30 a.m. at St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, 45 Anderson St., Raritan. Entombment will be in Somerset Hills Memorial Park in Basking Ridge. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today, and Sunday at the funeral home. At Giovanni's request, memorial donations will be accepted at the funeral home for Cancer Advocacy and the children of Padre Pio.

John S. Drozd, chemical engineer
HUDSON, Fla. -- John S. Drozd, 82, died Friday (May 11, 2001) in Hudson, Fla. He was born in Jersey City and had lived in Warren before moving to New Port Richey, Fla. 23 years ago.
Mr. Drozd was employed as a chemical engineer for Armour Pharmaceutical in Berkeley Heights. He was in the U.S. Coast Guard in World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Helen; his son, Douglas of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, Judith Sutton of Bernardsville and Barbara Lippin of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two sisters, Helen Pelle of Plainfield and Delores Atno of San Mateo, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will in Florida; arrangements will be by Michels & Lundquist Funeral Home of New Port Richey, Fla.

Joseph F. Alvator, American Cyanamid 33 years
RARITAN -- Joseph F. Alvator, 78, died Thursday (May 10, 2001) at his home in Raritan. He was born in Fort Riley, Kan., the son of the late John and Delia Sweeney Alvator. His father made the U.S. Army his career. Joseph Avatar had lived in Fort Monmouth and Wilkes-Barre, Pa., before moving to Somerville where he lived for 14 years. He then moved to Raritan in 1963.
Mr. Alvator was a shift supervisor for American Cyanamid in Bridgewater for 33 years, retiring in 1980. He graduated from Red Bank Catholic High School where he was a New Jersey State Track champion in 1941. He was a World War II veteran; served as Sergeant in the U.S. Marines in Guadalcanal. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 2290 and a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Somerville.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by two brothers, Jim and John Alvator.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Alvator; two daughters, Marilyn Alvator, retired from the U.S. Army, and Betsy Malacheski, both of Plains, Pa.; a brother, Gene Alvator of Florida; and three grandchildren, Jennifer and Jessica Welch and Jesse Joe Malacheski.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church, Mountain Avenue in Somerville. Interment is in St. Bernard Cemetery, Route 28 in Bridgewater. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Cusick Funeral Home, 80 Mountain Ave., Somerville.

Orlando De Filippis, World War II veteran
NORTH PLAINFIELD -- Mr. Orlando De Filippis, 76, died Thursday (May 10, 2001) at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield. Born in Lenola, Italy, Mr. De Filippis immigrated to Brazil and resided there for 12 years before moving to the United States and settling in North Plainfield.
Mr. De Filippis served in the Italian Army during World War II. He was captured and for two years was a Prisoner of War in Germany.
Prior to retiring at age 62, he was employed as a mason for 35 years both in Brazil and the Laborers Union Local 22 in Elizabeth. For five years following his retirement, Mr. De Filippis was employed by the North Plainfield School System in the maintenance department. He enjoyed making wine and gardening.
Surviving are his wife, Maria Mastrobattista De Filippis; three sons, Paolo of Brazil and Antonio and Marco, both of Andover; two daughters, Celeste Cirillo of North Plainfield and Norma Scott of Bedminster; a sister, Teresa De Parolis of Italy; and many grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 9:15 a.m. Monday at the Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in North Plainfield. Interment is in St. Mary's Stony Hill Cemetery in Watchung. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Donations to the Muhlenberg Hospice Fund at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center, Park Avenue and Randolph Road, Plainfield, NJ 07060 would be appreciated.
