JAMES SMITH, 33, NEW BRUNSWICK
James Darrell Smith, 33, died Sunday at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville.
He was born in New Brunswick and lived there for most of his life. He formerly resided in Charleston, S.C. from 1997-2000.
He was a laborer.
He was a member of Mount Carmel 1st Pentacostal Church in New Brunswick and was a former choir member at the church.
He was predeceased by his father, James Monroe Lang, and his stepfather, Conniel Gavin. He is survived by his daughter, Attiba Holder of New Brunswick; his mother, Helen Gavin of New Brunswick; five sisters, Cynthia Earvin of South River, Jackie and Mary Jean Smith, and Gina and Pamela Gavin, all of New Brunswick; four brothers, Conniel Gavin of Fort Dix, N.J., Benjamin Smith of Somerset, Kelly Gavin of Loris, S.C., and James Monroe Lang Jr. of Texas; his maternal grandfather, Henry Smith of Huger, S.C.; his maternal great-grandmother, Mable Williams, also of Huger, S.C. Also survived by his aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at noon tomorrow at Anderson Funeral Service, 201 Sandford St., New Brunswick. Interment will be at Franklin Memorial Park Cemetery in North Brunswick. Vieiwing will be 10 a.m.-noon at the funeral home.

JIMMY HUM, AGE 53, EDISON
Jimmy W.K. Hum, 53, of Edison died Tuesday at JFK Medical Center in Edison.
Born in Hong Kong, he came to the United States in 1953, settling in the Chinatown section of New York City. He lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Queens, N.Y., before moving to Edison 13 years ago.
He was a financial clerk in the financial district in New York City for 25 years.
He served in the Army from 1967-1973 and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of American Legion Post 1291 on Canal Street in New York City.
Surviving are his wife of 29 years, Jean (Chin) Hum; three sons, James, Jeffrey and Janson Hum, all of Edison; his father, Jin Koon Hum of Edison, and a sister, Anna Ng of Edison.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Woodbridge Memorial Gardens in Woodbridge. Visitation will be 6 p.m.-9 p.m. today only at Gosselin Funeral Home, 660 New Dover Road, Edison.

JOHN STAFFORD, 65, FORMERLY OF E. BRUNSWICK
John D. Stafford, 65, of Columbia, S.C., formerly of East Brunswick, died May 2 in South Carolina.
Born in Jersey City, he was a son of the late Arthur Stafford and Helen Treier. A graduate of Rutgers University, he was a former president of Phi Kappa Epsilon. He was also a former resident of Erie, Pa., where he retired as a realtor with Crandell & Associates, Inc. Mr. Stafford's career spanned 30 years in industrial sales, serving in various capacities from sales representative to national sales manager. He was a member of the National Association of Realtors, a member of the Erie Maennerchor, and had served on the Greater Erie Board of Realtors. He was also a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Columbia, S.C. While residing in East Brunswick, he was a Little League coach and Pop Warner football coach. He was also a member of the St. Pius Booster Association in New Jersey.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth H. Stafford; two sons, Bill Stafford of Kingswood, Texas, and Glenn Stafford of Chicago; a daughter, Lori Anne Smith of Columbia, S.C.; a sister, Evelyn Byron of Peoria, Ariz., and five grandchildren, Reagan Stafford, Bryston Stafford, Brittany Smith, Ryan Smith and Max Lanzing.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Columbia, S.C. Visitation will be 7 p.m.-9 p.m. tomorrow at Dunbar Funeral Home's Devine Street Chapel, also in Columbia. Memorials may be made to the Ronald S. Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research, 375 Homeward Road, Los Angeles, CA 90049.

MARY SOSNOWSKI, 87, FORMERLY OF CARTERET
Mary T. Kurdyla Sosnowski, 87, of Palm Coast, Fla., died Sunday at Beverly Health & Rehabilitation Center in Palm Coast.
She was born in Carteret and lived there for most of life. She was a parishioner of Holy Family R.C. Church in Carteret and a member of the church's Altar Rosary Society.
Her husband was the late Adam Sosnowski, who died in 1972. She was also predeceased by a brother, John Kurdyla, and four sisters, Sophie Bogash, Katherine Kimback, Helen Kurdyla and Anna Wilczek.
She is survived by two sons, Donald Sosnowski of Palm Coast, Fla., and Adam Sosnowski Jr. of Perth Amboy; five grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Synowiecki Funeral Home, 56 Carteret Ave., Carteret, followed by a 9 a.m. Mass at Holy Family R.C. Church in Carteret. Interment will be at St. Gertrude's Cemetery in Colonia. Friends and relatives may call 2 p.m.-4 p.m. and 7 p.m.-9 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home. The Holy Family Altar Rosary Society will recite the rosary at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the funeral home.

SHIRLEY PEKARSKI, 79, E. BRUNSWICK
Shirley Dobrosielski Pekarski, 79, died Tuesday at St. Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick.
Born in Salem, Mass., she lived in Jamesburg before moving to East Brunswick 46 years ago.
She was a communicant of St. Bartholomew's R.C. Church, East Brunswick.
Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Alex M. Pekarski; two sons, Richard and his wife, Jacqueline of Toms River, and Robert and his wife, Debra of Medford, and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 9:15 a.m. tomorrow at The Brunswick Memorial Home, 454 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Thomas the Apostle R.C. Church in Old Bridge. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in East Brunswick. Friends may call 2 p.m.-4 p.m. and 7 p.m.-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

ALBERT "DOC" CUCCURULLO, 80, of NEPTUNE
ALBERT "DOC" CUCCURULLO, 80, of NEPTUNE, died Monday at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. He was a self-employed auto wholesale dealer for 55 years. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, Asbury Park. He was a member and club champion of Asbury Park Golf and Country Club, which is now Shark River Hills Golf Course, and a member and club champion of Colonial Terrace Golf Club. His passion was the game of golf and he shared that interest with family and friends. All of his golfing buddies always wanted to be his partner. His golfing life included many tournaments; he was most proud of his two club championships. While in California, he loved to play golf with his two sons. Throughout his golfing life he had 10 holes in one. He was a wonderful husband and kind and gentle father and grandfather who loved to travel across the country each year to California to spend time with his family that resided there. His commitment, unconditional love and sweet nature enriched all of his family's lives. He will be missed and remembered fondly by all who were touched by his love and friendship to the very end. Born in Neptune, he was a lifelong resident of the Jersey Shore.
He was predeceased by his father, Gaetano Cuccurullo; his mother, Luisella Cuccurullo, in 1925; his stepmother, Marie Cuccurullo; four brothers, Tony, Fred, Frank and Arthur; and three sisters, Louise, Susan and his twin, Diana. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Betty Johnson Cuccurullo; two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry A. and Mary of Escondido, Calif., and Tom J. and Suzette of San Diego; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Diane M. Cuccurullo of Ocean Grove, Susan and Frank Neary of Ocean Township, and Lisa and Nigel Gall of LaMesa, Calif.; a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and Alphonso Noviello of Neptune; grandchildren, Tony and his wife, Jessica Cuccurullo of Escondido, Calif., Gina Finn of Niceville, Fla., Frank and his wife, Lara Neary of Shrewsbury, Christopher Neary of Stamford, Conn., Nicole Neary and Jessica Neary of Ocean Township, and Olivia and Shane Gall of LaMesa, Calif.; and a great-grandson, Kyle Neary of Shrewsbury.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Buckley Funeral Home, 509 Second Ave., Asbury Park. A funeral procession will leave at 9:30 a.m. Friday from the funeral home for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Church, Asbury Park. Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Neptune. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 805 Pine St., Asbury Park, NJ 07712.

ALEXANDER CZERNENKO, 77, of Indian Trail, N.C., formerly of MIDDLETOWN
ALEXANDER CZERNENKO, 77, of Indian Trail, N.C., formerly of MIDDLETOWN, died April 20 at Mercy Hospital, Charlotte, N.C. He was born in Kiev, Ukraine. His early years were spent in the turmoil leading to World War II; his family was separated and he immigrated to Austria, where he met his wife, who had lived in his village in the Ukraine. Later, he and his wife immigrated to Venezuela, where their children were born, before moving to the United States in 1963. He was a loving and devoted father. He enjoyed reading his Bible so much that as his eyesight deteriorated, he would take two magnifying glasses and hold them so he would be able to read his beloved word of God.
His wife, Maria, died in 1996. Surviving are three daughters, Valentina Zinczuk of Indian Trail, Nadia Perez of New Jersey, and Lidia Czernenko of Indian Trail; two sons, Walter Czernenko of Indian Trail and John Alexander Czernenko of Burnsville, N.C.; and eight grandchildren.
Heritage Funeral Home, Indian Trail, N.C., is in charge of arrangements.

CONRAD E. HERMAN, 88, of Miami Beach, Fla., formerly of NEPTUNE
CONRAD E. HERMAN, 88, of Miami Beach, Fla., formerly of NEPTUNE, died Monday. He joined the U.S. Army before the war years, and served his country in a distinguished career that lasted 28 years, retiring as the command sergeant major of the U.S. Army Signal School, Fort Monmouth. During World War II, he was part of the team that developed the inductee processing system for the military, serving in New Cumberland Gap, and Indiantown Gap, both in Pennsylvania. In 1946, he was assigned as the NCOIC of the European Command Replacement Battalion in Marburg, Germany, and was responsible for the assignment of all incoming enlisted personnel to units within EUCOM, including all of the enlisted personnel chosen to participate in the Berlin Airlift. His subsequent assignments were as senior NCOIC for MAAG in The Hague, Netherlands; Headquarters Reception in Fort Knox, Ky.; the 1st Replacement Battalion in Zweibrucken, Germany, and Headquarters Personnel section at Fort Dix. He graduated first in his class in Hungarian language studies at the U.S. Army Language School, Monterey, Calif. He received many awards for his service to his country, the highest being the Army Commendation Medal, with Oak Leaf Cluster. After retirement from the Army, he worked as a tax investigator for the State of New Jersey. He was the youngest of eight children. Born in Pittsburgh, he lived in Neptune from 1962 to 1990 and in Colorado Springs, Colo., before moving to Miami Beach.
His wife, Lore, died in 1998. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Kathryn of Miami Beach; a sister, Christine, 90, of New Port Richey, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Christopher and Rebecca.
The family invites his friends to a viewing from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapel, 1920 Alton Road, Miami Beach, Fla. A Mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Church, 3716 Garden Ave., Miami Beach.

SARAH L. SIMON, 93, of Brooklyn, formerly of OCEAN TOWNSHIP, died Tuesday at Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn. Born in Newark, she lived in Ocean Township before moving to Brooklyn.
Her husband, Morris J. Simon, died in 1957. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Marvin H. and Sheila Simon of Wanamassa, Ocean Township, and Gerald J. and Shirley Simon of Brooklyn; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.
Shomrei Hadas Funeral Home, Brooklyn, was in charge of arrangements.
