James N. Bray
James N. Bray, 82, of Pompton Plains, formerly of North Caldwell, died Sunday, February 11, 2007 at his home in Pompton Plains.
Born in Morgantown, West Virginia, on May 18, 1924, James was the son of the late Charles and Frances (nee Newell) Bray.
Marrying Sarah Gatewood in 1951, the couple settled in North Caldwell, where they raised two sons.
James worked as a Financial Analyst for Dun & Bradstreet in New York City for thirty years before working as vice president for Moody’s Investors Services, retiring in 1987.
An important part of James’ life was his role as a parishioner at St. Agnes Episcopal Church in Little Falls, where he worshiped for more than 41 years.
James is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sarah; his sons, Charles W. of Kinnelon and James G. of Sparta; and his four grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be celebrated 1 p.m. Friday, February 23 at St. Agnes Episcopal Church, 65 Union Avenue, Little Falls. A repast luncheon will follow at Ruppert’s Restaurant in Riverdale.
In lieu of flowers, donations in James’ memory to St. Agnes Episcopal Church would be greatly appreciated by his family.
Leon E. Busteed
Leon E. Busteed, 80, of Pompton Lakes, died Saturday evening, February 10, 2007 at the Hospice of New Jersey center at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Wayne with his loving wife, sons and grandchildren by his side.
Born in Hornell, New York on July 25, 1926, Leon was the son of the late George and Mary (nee Connors) Busteed.
Growing up in Hornell, he graduated high school there and worked for the Eerie Railroad before serving for the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Returning home, he married the former Irene M. Vincent, whom he had grown up with, and together the couple settled in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, raising three sons.
To support his family, Leon first worked as an inspector for Curtis Wright in Fairfield, and later as a lab technician for E.I. Dupont in Pompton Lakes, where he worked for 23 years before retiring in 1985.
William was a parishioner of St. Mary’s R.C.Church. He was also very active with Boy Scout Troop 38 of Pompton Lakes and the VFW there, serving as former Assistant Vice Commander and Chaplain.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Irene; his sons, Leon Timothy Busteed of Wallington, Vincent Patrick Busteed of Hamburg and Donald Michael Busteed of Andover; his brother, Donald Busteed of Mission Viejo, California; his sister, Helen Boyden of Verona; and his grandchildren, Misty Lynn, Donald Michael, Lisa and Patrick.
A funeral service will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Pompton Reformed Church Cemetery in Pompton Lakes.
Visiting hours will be Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Walter William Lefler
Walter William Lefler Sr., 85, of Passaic, formerly of Paterson and Pompton Plains, died Friday, February 16, 2007 at Chestnut Hill Nursing Home in Passaic.
Born in Easton, Pennsylvania, on July 20, 1921, Walter was the son of the late Amos and Frances (nee Morris) Lefler.
Marrying Helen Frances Kluska, the couple settled in Pompton Plains in 1943, where they raised a son and a daughter.
To support his family, Walter worked as a self-employed professional driver and pilot. He was also a Special Officer to the Pequannock Township Police Department. In addition, he enjoyed volunteering his time to instruct Judo Boxing to the youth and women of Pequannock.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Mt. View, Wayne, and a member of the Pilots Association.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; his son, Walter Jr.; his daughter, Dawn Stoeckle; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will begin Monday morning with visiting hours from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., followed by a Funeral Service at 12 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Laurel Grove Memorial Park in Totowa.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Walter’s memory to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942 would be greatly appreciated by his family.
Erna V. Masone
Erna V. Masone, 84, of Riverdale, died Wednesday, February 14, 2007 at Chilton Memorial Hospital in Pompton Plains.
Born in Chicago on January 13, 1923, Erna was the daughter of the late John and Erna (nee Carlsen) Blomgren.
Meeting Nicholas Masone during World War II, the couple married on May 13, 1942 in Brooklyn, settling there before moving to Riverdale in 1958.
A mother of four children, Erna worked for 25 years as an operator for NJ Bell.
An active parishioner of St. Mary’s R.C. Church in Pompton Lakes, Erna enjoyed gardening and nature watching from her home along the Pequannock River.
Along with her husband, Erna was a former member of the Elks Club in Pompton Lakes as well.
She is survived by her son, Daniel Masone and his wife Patricia of Denville; her daughters, Rosanne Masone and her husband Michael Kresky of Englewood, Christine Kasubinski and her husband Richard of Aberdeen, and Carolyn Masone of Riverdale; her sister, Gertrude Kaelin and her husband Ed of Chicago; her grandchildren, Diana Masone, Alan Masone and his wife Rebecca, Kristine Lindsay and her husband Jason Kanter, Michael Lindsay and Matthew Ficarelli; her great-grandson, Miles Masone; and her nephew, Craig Larsen.
She was predeceased by her husband, Nicholas, in 1994.
Funeral services will commence 10:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home and will proceed to an 11:30 a.m. funeral Mass at St. Mary’s R.C. Church in Pompton Lakes. Burial will follow at Maryrest Cemetery in Mahwah.
Visiting hours will be Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

William C. Meddick
William C. Meddick, 82, of Pompton Plains, died Friday, February 9, 2007 at Renaissance Gardens Nursing Home with his children by his side.
Born in Toronto, Canada, on February 9, 1925, William was the son of the late William and Anne (nee Curry) Meddick. Growing up in Toronto, he earned his degree in Charter Accounting at the University of Toronto.
Marrying Osa Wessman in 1952, the couple settled in Caldwell, raising two children there. To support his family, William worked as a CPA for Plumrose USA Inc. in Springfield for many years, as well as several other firms, before retiring in 1991.
A longtime member and active parishioner of St. Agnes Episcopal Church in Little Falls, William also enjoyed playing bridge, watching ice hockey and golf, good food and fine wines.
William is survived by his son, William J. Meddick and his wife Marcella of New Providence; his daughter, Susan Meddick of Tabernash, Colorado; and his granddaughters, Juliana and Cara Meddick.
He was predeceased by his wife, Osa, in 1990.
A memorial service will be celebrated 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Chapel at Cedar Crest Village in Pompton Plains.
