Dr. Arlene B. Jorgenson
FREDON — Having lived in Sussex County for more than 55 years, Dr. Arlene B. Jorgenson, 91, affectionately referred to as Dr. J by all who knew her, died peacefully at her home in Fredon on Monday Oct. 15, 2007.
Dr. Jorgenson moved from her native home in Grassy Creek, N. C. to York, Pa. and later to Newton. She had also resided in the Culver Lake section of Frankford for many years before moving back to Newton in 1978 and then to Fredon seven years ago.
Dr. Jorgenson began her career in Sussex County in 1948 with her first job as an elementary school teacher in Frankford Township Schools. In 1955, she moved to the Sparta School District where she worked as a junior high school teacher, principal, and director of special services. In 1967, Dr. Jorgenson was named assistant superintendent of Sparta Schools and served the community in this capacity through the first of what would later become three retirements.
In 1982, Dr. Jorgenson, together with Dr. William Apetz, laid the foundation for the development of Sussex County Community College. She later served the college she had helped to create as vice president and academic dean. She had also served as an adjunct professor for both Jersey City State College and Sussex County Community College. In 1987, she was recognized by the New Jersey Senate and awarded the New Jersey Senate Citation for Outstanding Educator.
Dr. Jorgenson's influence has not only been felt in the education community of northern New Jersey. She has served with pride and distinction on the boards of the Karen Ann Quinlan Center of Hope Hospice, the Samaritan Inn, the Health Care Foundation of Newton Memorial Hospital, the Sussex County Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Sussex County Arts Council Advisory Board and the Consumer Advisory Board of United Telephone Company. Dr. Jorgenson has touched the lives of many throughout northern New Jersey.
In 1989, Dr. Jorgenson was appointed headmaster of Hilltop Country Day School, a small, independent private school. A far cry from the challenges of a big school district, the school was faced with its own set of unique challenges none the less. As in all her previous endeavors, Dr. Jorgenson took on this new challenge with optimism and energy. Through her leadership, insight, and stewardship, she managed to move Hilltop to a new level. She was an instrumental agent in helping to make Hilltop the strong institution it is today. In 1995, after many years of service to the school and with real fanfare and celebration, Dr. Jorgenson celebrated her second retirement and was awarded with Hilltop's highest honor: Trustee Emeriti.
Dr. Jorgenson was quoted as saying "Children are our most vital asset, and we must never stop building our understanding of how we learn and how we can teach most effectively." Throughout her illustrious career, she had always remained, at heart, a teacher. Arlene tirelessly, patiently, and carefully instructed her young charges, and old, in an appreciation of the fine arts and of great artists. She was always willing to share her vast knowledge and wisdom; her expertise with all those she came in contact with. Dr. Jorgenson's love for the arts and art education, her love for children and her love for the art and craft of teaching was as strong on Oct. 15th, 2007 as they were on that very first day she taught.
Daughter of the late William A. and Ella M. Bleviens Blackburn, Dr. Jorgenson was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Newton. Arlene was a 1956 graduate of the Seton Hall University in South Orange, receiving her bachelor of science degree in education and later her master's degree in science in 1958. She also received her master's of arts degree from Kean College in 1960, and then her doctorate in education from the New York University in 1963. Dr. Jorgenson did extensive post doctoral studies at Kent University as well as the University of Virginia from 1962 to 1976 in comparing education of the United States of America to international education
Arlene had received many awards throughout her career such as the Sussex County Distinguished Citizen Award, the NJ Outstanding Achievement Award, the Zonta Club of Sussex County Women of the Year Award, Sparta Jaycees Women of the Year, Sussex County Board of Education Distinguished Service to Education Award, as well as many other. In addition, Arlene was active throughout the community serving as a volunteer in the X-Ray and Pacemaker clinic of the Newton Hospital, as an art history instructor for the Rev. George Brown School Sparta as well as the Gifted and Talented Students Program Coordinator for the Ogdensburg Public Schools.
An extensive world traveler and socialite, Dr. J. had visited many countries throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Australia. Arlene will be missed by everyone who knew and loved her as well as the countless students that had the privilege of meeting her and benefiting from her great knowledge. Arlene was a gracious hostess who opened her home for many social functions and charitable events.
Arlene was predeceased by her daughter, Deborah Suzanne Rose in 1955; her first husband, Archie Rose in 1964 as well as her second husband, Harvey J. Jorgenson Sr. in 1979; her two brothers, Rev. Guyn R. Blackburn and Dr. Earl G. Blackburn.
She is survived by her daughter, Ashleigh EmMae Jorgenson Yurkin of Branchville; her step daughters, Norma Cappola of Fredon and Claire Sutton Hunt of Milford, Pa.; her step-son, Harvey W. Jorgenson Jr. of Sparta; her brother, Bryce A. Blackburn of Jacksonville, Fla.; her sisters, Myrtle D. Wilgis McDaniels of St. Augustine, Fla. and Angelyn Eller, of Purlear, N.C.; as well as her three grandsons, Lt. Reed Jorgenson, William Javan Yurkin and Mason Julian Yurkin.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, Oct. 19, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church at 111 Ryerson Ave. in Newton. Interment will follow in the Newton Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Oct. 18 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Iliff-Ruggiero Funeral Home at 156 Main St. Route 206 in Newton.
