Joseph Olszewski

Joseph Olszewski, 67, of Little Egg Harbor passed away Sept. 11, at Southern Ocean County Hospital, Manahawkin.

Mr. Olszewski was born in Yonkers, N.Y., and lived in Iselin, before moving to Little Egg Harbor 15 years ago.

He was an avid woodcrafter and gardener and his garden was admired by many.

His dog was Smokey.

He was employed as a printer with Colgate Palmolive for 25 years until his retirement.

Surviving are his wife, Gloria Olszewski; brother-in-law and his wife, Alex and Ann Mikos; four nieces, Cheryl Jiosi, Barbara Furtenbacher, Jamie Amato and Lisa Wielgus; one nephew, Alex Mikos; three grandnieces, Jacki Oese, Lindsay Wielgus, and Olivia Amato; and one grandnephew, Michael Wielgus.

Funeral services were private.

Donations in his memory may be made to: The Valerie Fund Children's Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders, at St. Barnabas Medical Center, Old Short Hills Road, First Floor, East Wing, Livingston, NJ 07039 Attn: Kathy Nunn.

Thos L. Shinn Funeral Home, Manahawkin, was in charge of arrangements.

Richard E. Wallace

Richard E. Wallace, 68, Waretown, died Sept. 15, at Southern Ocean County Hospital, Manahawkin.

Mr. Wallace was born in Reading, Pa. and was formerly of Manahawkin before moving to Waretown in 1986.

Mr. Wallace was a professor at Ocean County College, Toms River where he taught business for 30 years. He retired in 1996. He also had worked at Fairleigh-Dickenson University, Teaneck. Mr. Wallace received his bachelor of science degree from Shippensburg University, Shippensburg, Pa. and his masters degree in 1966 in education and professional diploma. He was a member of the Mariners Lodge F&AM 150, Barnegat, the Order of the Eastern Stars Bethlehem Chapter 40, Barnegat and the American Federations of Musicians, Asbury Park. He was a volunteer at Southern Ocean County Hospital and a member of the United Methodist Church, both in Manahawkin.

Surviving are his companion, Ruth A. Exel, four nephews, Lee, John, Timothy, and Thomas Wallace, and one niece, Bobbi-Jo Hurst.

A Memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at Ocean County Memorial Park, 1722 Silverton Road, Toms River, (732) 255-1870.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Southern Ocean County Hospital Building Fund, 1140 Rt. 72 West, Manahawkin, NJ 08050.

Riggs Funeral Home, 130 Route 9, N. Forked River, is in charge of arrangements.

Richard D. Yourek

Richard D. Yourek, 78, Toms river, died Dec. 18 at Seacrest Village Nursing & Rehab, Little Egg Harbor.

He was born in Wallington and moved to Toms River seven years ago.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran with 22 years in service.

He is survived by his sister, Florence Juhasz, Toms River.

Arrangements are private under the direction of Wood Funeral Home, Tuckerton.

Anna Mae Feeney

Anna Mae Feeney, (Reitmeier) 68, Ship Bottom, died Dec. 18 in Southern Ocean County Hospital, Manahawkin.

Mrs. Feeney was born in Manahawkin and was a lifelong resident of southern Ocean County. She moved to Ship Bottom in 1956.

Mrs. Feeney graduated from Tuckerton High School in 1952. She had worked for New Jersey Bell, Manahawkin, as an operator. She was then employed at Ciba-Geigy, Toms River, as a senior accounting clerk for 17 years, retiring in 1994.

She was a 50-year member of the Manahawkin United Methodist Church and a Girl Scout leader of Long Beach Island.

She was predeceased in 1997 by her husband, Thomas F., and by her sister, Betty Johnson.

Surviving are her son, Thomas E. Jr. and his wife Dianne, Manahawkin; two daughters, Susan Feeney, Ship Bottom, and Lori Anne and her husband David R. Holt, Tuckerton; three sisters, Pat Taylor, Manahawkin, Susan Carroll, Minnesota, and Helen Reitmeier, Tennessee. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Thomas III and Caitlin Feeney and Ashton Holt.

A funeral service took place Dec. 22 at Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Home, Ship Bottom. Interment followed at Greenwood Cemetery, Cedar Run.

In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to the Manahawkin United Methodist Church, 116 Stafford Ave., Manahawkin, NJ 08050 or the Southern Ocean County Hospital, 1140 Route 72 West, Manahawkin, NJ 08050 in Mrs. Feeney's memory.

Stanley R. Cook

Stanley R. Cook, 71, of Manahawkin died Wednesday Dec. 17, at his home.

Mr. Cook was born in Teaneck, and was formerly of Old Bridge, moving to Manahawkin in 1997.

Mr. Cook was a self-employed mortgage banker for 35 years and retire din 1997.

He was an Army Veteran and a member of the Master Gardeners of Ocean County.

Surviving are his wife, Jean (Cunningham); two daughters, Kristina Gilfillan, and Victoria Michaels both of Manalapan. Also surviving are seven grandchildren.

A memorial Mass was celebrated Dec. 21, at Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Home, Ship Bottom. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the VanDyk Hospice & Homecare 99 Highway 37 West, Toms River, NJ 08755 or to the Popcorn Park Zoo P.O. Box 43, Forked River, NJ 08731 in Mr. Cook's memory.

David (Larry) Reeves

David (Larry) Reeves, 64, passed suddenly at home Dec. 16, surrounded by family and close friends. Mr. Reeves was a lifetime Tuckerton resident.

He proudly served 20 years in the U.S. Navy and continued on to a career with the New Jersey State Police-Marine Division for another 20-plus years.

He retired from Bass River State Forest in 2002. He was a lifetime member of West Tuckerton Fire Department and Tuckerton seaport. He had a love for clamming, hunting and fishing, and was a loyal member of Janvier Deer Club.

Son of the late Mildred T. Reeves and David G. Reeves, he is survived by his wife of 43 years, Hisako (Chako); his brother, Robert Reeves and sister-in-law Georgette, his daughters, Terri Ann Reeves, and Kelli Nutt and son-in-law Eddie Nutt. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Danielle and Hailey Nutt. He is also survived by his aunt, Adelaide Mitchell. He will be sadly missed by close friends Wayne and Karen Tonnesen, and their children Alex and Andrew.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to America's Heroes of Freedom, Attn: Operation Life Line, PO Box 18984, Washington, DC 20036 or Soka University of America, 1 University Drive, Aliso Viejo, CA 92656.

Memorial services were held at Maxwell Funeral Home, Little Egg Harbor. Private burial will be om Greenwood Cemetery, Tuckerton.

Jane Bellis Duffy

Jane Bellis Duffy, 75, Little Egg Harbor, died Dec. 18 at her home.

Born in East Amwell Township, Dec. 20, 1927, the daughter of the late Ernest and Marion Stryker Bellis, she had resided in east Amwell township until 1950, then in Elizabeth, 1950-1960, returning to reside in East Amwell Township in 1980.

She lived in Little Egg Harbor Township since 1993.

She was a graduate of Flemington High School, class of 1945 and Trenton State College, Class of 1949. She taught in the Elizabeth public schools.

She was a member and elder of the United First Presbyterian Church of Amwell, Ringoes, the Hunterdon County Historical Society, charter member, newsletter editor and historian of the Runkle Family Association, and was a member of the Great John Mathis Chapter, DAR, Manahawkin. She also was a member of the Audobon Society and was interested in the history of New Jersey and Hunterdon County. She was a genealogist, tracing many of her German and Dutch ancesters, who settled in Hunterdon County back to their origins in Europe.

Surviving are her husband, John P. Duffy; two daughters, Rosann Jacoby of Little Egg Harbor Township and Laura Bay of Raritan Township; three sons, Christopher Duffy of Kingwood Township, Dennis Duffy of Ewing, and Sean Duffy of Washington; and 11 grandchildren.

A daughter, Joan Duffy, died in 1997.

Funeral services took place Dec. 21 at the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, Flemington. Interment was in Amwell Ridge Cemetery, Ringoes.

Memorial contributions may be made to United First Presbyterian Church of Amwell, P.O. Box 348, Ringoes, NJ 08551 or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Gertrude Koch

Gertrude Koch, 82, of Beach Haven, died Dec. 16, at her home in Beach Haven.

Mrs. Koch was born in Enfield, Conn, Feb. 13, 1921. the daughter of the late Frederick and the late Josephine (Wardwell) Abbe.

She was a former longtime resident of Lafayette Hill, Pa. and a member of the Beach Haven Yacht Club and the Southern Ocean County Booster Club.

She was a homemaker and former secretary for Proctor And, Schwartz and also for the Colonial School District.

Wife of the late Edward A. Koch, she is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Dean of Harleysville, Pa. and Elissa J. Pizzutiello of Canton, Ga.; two sisters, Thelma Whithead of Cape Cod, Mass. and Loretta McVey of Suprise, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Joseph, Michael, Daniel, Eric, Laurel and Sarah; and one great-grandchild, Dylan.

She is predeceased by three sisters.

Friends called Dec. 23, at Lownes Funeral Home, Germantown Pike, Lafayette Hill, Pa..

Burial was in the George Washington Memorial Park, Plymouth Meeting, Pa.

Merrill H. Bergey

Merrill H. Bergey, 73, a lifelong resident of Franconia Township, passed away peacefully Dec. 18, after a long illness.

Born March 8, 1930, he was the son of the late Warren F. and Anna J. (Heckler) Bergey of Elroy.

He was a sales manager of Weyenhaeuser Company for 33 years, retiring in 1993. He also served Franconia Township for 35 years, largely as a volunteer, attending more than 5,000 meetings during his ongoing service to his township.

He began his tenure in 1967 as a member of the planning commission and in 1970 began serving on the zoning hearing board. His diligence and his desire to serve the public led him to the board of supervisors in 1978 where he served as chairman from 1980-1998, co-inspiring the development of Franconia Township.

He was instrumental in establishing the Northern Montgomery County Recycling Commission in 1991 where he served until his retirement this year. He also volunteered his time to the Indian Valley Public Library Funding Task Force.

Mr. Bergey was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the Korean War. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Indian Valley SAAC from 1984 to the present. While serving as president, he brought to fruition the development of the Day Care Center, serving the needs of families throughout the community.

He was a charter member of the Franconia Lions Club from 1966 to the present. He was a member of the Christ Reformed Church at Indian Creek, Franconia Township and a member of the Barnegat Beach Civic Association in his favorite vacation spot, Waretown.

He is survived by his wife, Sally; three children, Steven M. of Souderton, Blake A. of Hatfield, and Maria Chesney and her husband, Adam of Ocean Gate; and three grandsons, Eric, Kyle and Tucker; his sister, Glydys Hockman of Richlandtown; and his brothers, Walter Bergey and his wife, Shirley of Harleysville, and Kenneth Bergey of Telford.

He was predeceased by his brothers Henry and James Bergey.

Relatives and friends attended a memorial service at Williams, Bergey, Koffel Funeral Home, Franconia, Pa. on Dec. 22. Anne V. Gagliardi

Anne V. (De Lellis) Gagliardi, 85, Plymouth Meeting, Pa., died Dec. 18 at Montgomery Hospital, Norristown, Pa.

Born in Philadelphia on Feb. 28, 1918, she lived in the Germantown Section of Philadelphia, lived in Ship Bottom for 30 years, and for the past 20 years she resided in Plymouth Meeting, Pa.

Predeceased by her late husband, Eugenio F. Gagliardi, she is survived by her seven daughters, Anne Schwalje, North Wales, Pa., Catherine Cummings, Lafayette Hill, Pa., Jeanne Houser, Plymouth Meeting, Pa., Marie Coplay, Plymouth Meeting, Pa, Jane Gagliardi-Plenge, Barrington, Patricia Smith, Surf City, Frances Elizabeth Gagliardi, Blue Bell, Pa.; one son, C. David Gagliardi of Suprise, Ariz.; 24 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by three great-grandchildren, Shannon Turley, Lyndsay Cummings, and Anthony Baldasari, and her parents, Domenic D. De Lellis and Anne V. (Mc Glone).

A funeral Mass took place Saturday at St. Philip Neri Roman Catholic Church, Lafayette Hill, Pa. Interment was in Hillside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Children's Hospital, 34th and Civic Center Blvd, Philadelphia, PA 19104.

Arrangements are by Moore & Snear Funeral Home, Conshohocken, Pa.
