BERNICE SONNTAG, 91, of West Hartford, Conn., formerly of SPRING LAKE, died Thursday, April 15, at St. Mary Home, West Hartford. Her children and grandchildren were privileged to be with her during the last days of her illness. She was employed in the music department of Jersey City State College before retiring. She was born in Jersey City. During her stay at St. Mary Home, she was renowned for the smiles she gave and for the hugs she received, a legacy to aspire to. She was born in Jersey City.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Christine and Louis Pandolfe of West Hartford, and their children, Frank and Marisa; a son, Richard Sonntag of Jersey City; a daughter, Connie Castner of West Hartford, and her children, Jenna, Christie and Julie.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. May 14 at St. Peter Claver Church, 47 Pleasant St., West Hartford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association of Connecticut, 96 Oak St., Hartford, CT; or St. Mary Home, 2021 Albany Ave., West Hartford, CT 06117.

DAVID P. "POP POP" BIGELOW, 53, of Port Monmouth, MIDDLETOWN
DAVID P. "POP POP" BIGELOW, 53, of Port Monmouth, MIDDLETOWN, died Saturday, April 17, at Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank. He was a commercial fisherman most of his life and a member of the Belford Co-op and JT White Clam Plant. He was a member of the Middletown Elks. He married his wife Diana Lake Bigelow on May 10, 1969. Born in Red Bank, he lived in the Bayshore area his entire life, first in Belford, Middletown, before moving to Port Monmouth 30 years ago.
He was predeceased by his father, Albert E. Bigelow, in 1971. Surviving are his of 35 years wife, Diana Lake Bigelow; his mother, Alma Tarnow Bigelow of Belford; two daughters, Karen and her husband, Rick Heller, of Union Beach, and Holly and her husband, Tim Miller, of Middletown; a brother, Albert E. Jr. of Belford; five granddaughters, Arielle, Kira, Sara, Lexi and Ashley.
Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Scott & Kedz Home for Funerals, Belford, is in charge of arrangements.

GEORGE VAN LOAN SMITH, 62, of WALL
GEORGE VAN LOAN SMITH, 62, of WALL, died Saturday, April 17, at Burnt Tavern Rehabilitation Center in Brick after a long and valiant fight against multiple sclerosis. After graduating from Long Branch High School in 1959, he proudly served his country in the Navy. After he returned home, he was employed by E.A.I. in Eatontown. He was taught how to fly by his best buddy, Capt. Donald Leefe, and was employed at the former Asbury Park Airport. He later was employed as a pilot for Ed Brown at Allaire Airport, and then achieved his dream job as a corporate pilot for the Rockefeller family in New York City. His dream was tragically cut short when he lost the vision in both eyes and was diagnosed with MS in the early 1970s. Despite these hardships, his faith and courage never wavered. He married, was the proud father of two sons and a daughter and graduated with honors with a degree in political science from Monmouth University in 1982. During his college years, he could be found spending many hours in the student center arguing his point regarding government issues and policies. He became a vocal advocate for the disabled and helped to facilitate handicapped parking on Monmouth's campus, and also helped to establish the local Monmouth MS Chapter. From 1982 to 1992, he effectively and enthusiastically served on the Wall Township Board of Education. In 1992, he married his oldest son's fourth-grade teacher, Sharon Coughlan, and he was her knight in shining armor and the bravest man she ever knew. He then became a proud father to another daughter, Shanna. He was a member of Hamilton United Methodist Church and his faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was paramount. He taught an adult Sunday school class and served on various committees including Staff Parish Relations Committee and the Administrative Board. He loved his family, especially his two beautiful little granddaughters.
He was predeceased by his father, Buchanan Morgan Smith, in 1954. Surviving are his wife, Sharon; two sons, Buchanan and Timothy; two daughters and sons-in-law, Shanna and Thomas Watson, and Barbara Smith-Weiner and Ken Weiner, and their children, Amber, Max and Ella; two granddaughters Brianna Ashley and Callie Shea Watson; his mother, Ruth Erickson Smith; three sisters and one brother-in-law, Sarah and Joe Valencia, Christina Demaree and Cynthia Pendergast; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Gayle and Frank Maccia; two nephews, Chris "Fred" and Kyle "Otto" Maccia; his ex-wife and friend, Fran Smith; and his caretaker and her husband, Terri Stumpf and Brian; and many other friends and relatives.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hamilton United Methodist Church, 858 Old Corlies Ave., Neptune. The family will receive friends from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday with the funeral service at 11 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hamilton United Methodist Church. Arrangements by the Ely Funeral Home, Neptune.

JEAN L. JACOBSON, 85, of Florida, formerly of RUMSON, died Saturday, April 17. She was a devoted wife and sister, a cherished mother, devoted mother-in-law, adored by her seven grandchildren. She loved her family, who will miss her bright guiding light.
Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Robert Sr.; three sons, Arthur, Robert Jr. and James; three daughters-in-law, Deborah, Anita and Kerry; a sister, Pat Grad; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth, Arthur L. Jr., Thomas E., Lyn S. Jacobson, Tamara Thomas, Lori Jarck and Kristi Jacobson; 12 great-grandchildren, Zoe, Sam, Grace and Rachel Jacobson, Willa and Oliver Kaufman, Chloe Jacobson, Nicholas and William Thomas, Nicole, Kaitlin and Pierce Jarck; and her sister, pat.

KENNETH A. MOUNT JR., 68, of Palm Coast, Fla., formerly of ENGLISHTOWN, died Sunday, April 11, at Florida Hospital Flager, Palm Court, Fla. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1955 to 1957. He was a waste water technician for City of Palm Coast Utility Department. After his military service, he was a route salesman for this father's laundry business and then for 15 years was a custodian for the Freehold Regional High School District at the Manalapan High School. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Englishtown, active in Alcoholics Anonymous for 19 years, a member of the Moose Lodge and the Social Singles Club, both of Palm Coast, and Elks Lodge 1454, Freehold. He enjoyed auto racing. Born in Englishtown he lived there for many years, moving to Palm Coast in 1987.
Surviving are his mother, Marion Groendyke Mount of Englishtown; a brother, Robert W. Mount of Monroe Township; two sisters, Kathleen M. Glovich of Howell, and Patricia M. Hulse of Red Bank; and 23 nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at at 11 a.m. today at Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center St., Freehold, followed by interment at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent. MAE L. "AUNT MAE" JANSAK, 82, of NEPTUNE, died Saturday, April 17, at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. She was a homemaker and an avid knitter. She participated in many activities at the Neptune Senior Center. Born in Jersey City, she lived in the Bergen County area most of her life before moving to Neptune 12 years ago.
She was predeceased by her husband, Paul, in 1972; and a sister, Edna Weisert Rippetoe. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Vivian Jansak of Marlboro; and several nieces, nephews and friends, including nephews John Rippetoe and his wife, Kathy,of Wall, and Howard Rippetoe and his wife, Karen, of Washington's Crossing, Pa.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Ely Funeral Home, 3316 Route 33, Neptune. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, followed by interment at the George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus.

ROBERT LAWRENCE DENNIS SR., 64, of WALL, died Sunday, April 18, at home. He was a driver, retiring from the Asbury Park Press and Seabrite Stainless Steel. He also bartended at Pete and Elda's. He was a member and former trustee of Belmar Elks 1997 and an exempt member of the West Belmar Fire Company. He served in the Navy. Born in Neptune, he lived in the Shore area all his life.
He was predeceased by his parents, Eleanor Dennis Connolly and Clarence Garwood Dennis; and a brother Garwood "Chick" William Dennis. Surviving are his wife of 32 years, Patricia Bordonaro; a son, Robert Jr. of Connecticut; three granddaughters, Aimee, Alyssa and Kerri and a daughter-in-law, Debra Dennis, of Neptune; three sisters, Beverly Wolfe of Florida, Patricia Dalton of Wall, and Linda Agans of Toms River; and as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Friends are invited to call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday, at Johnson-McGinley Funeral Home, 2652 Highway 138, Wall. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home Wednesday at a time to be announced. Interment will follow at Monmouth Memorial Park.

FRANK G. BUCCO SR., 79, of Morganville, MARLBORO, died Sunday, April 18, at home after a courageous battle with heart disease and diabetes. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was superintendent for Matawan Department of Public Works for many years, retiring in 1990. He also was a special police officer for Matawan. He was a communicant of St. Clement's Roman Catholic Church, Matawan; a member of Holy Name Society and the Third Degree Knights of Columbus. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II, serving in the 13th Air Force as a technical sergeant on B-24 Liberators. He flew 49 missions and received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with one Silver Star and two Bronze Stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and Gunner Wings. Born in Matawan, he lived there before moving to Morganville many years ago.
He is predeceased by his father, Rocco Bucco; his mother, Victoria Bucco; four brothers, Phillip Bucco, Robert Bucco Sr., Lawrence Bucco and Russell Bucco Sr.; and one sister, Dominica Venezia. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Adriana Lisacchi Bucco; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Ronald and Hela Bucco of Matawan, Frank Jr. and Jacqueline Bucco of Matawan, Anthony and Christine Bucco of Tinton Falls, and Rocco Bucco of Matawan; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Terese and Joseph Cate of Howell, Natalie and Salvatore Iodaci of Laurence Harbor, Patricia Bucco of Cliffwood, and Patricia Kennedy Bucco of Matawan; 18 grandchildren, Jessica, Victoria, Noelle, Kathryn, Anthony, Ellen, Andrea, Andrew, Kevin, Melissa, Jennifer, Joseph, Toni, Salvatore Jr., Vincent, Giulianna, Rocco and Matthew; three great-grandchildren, Michael, Alexis and Adriana; two brothers, Joseph and Anthony; three sisters, Mary Buoano, Angie Mizell, and Annie Caden; a brother-in-law, Natale Lisacchi; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

ALEXANDER L. PETRONELLA, 64, of TOMS RIVER, formerly of Newark, died Sunday, April 18, at Crystal Lake Nursing Home, Bayville. He was a communicant of St. Justin's Roman Catholic Church, Toms River. Born in Newark, he lived in Union before coming to Toms River in 1993.
He was predeceased by his parents, Vito and Josephine Petronella; and a brother, Michael Petronella, on Nov. 20, 1998. Surviving are a sister, Helen Petronella of Toms River; a sister-in-law, Pauline Petronella; and several nieces and nephews.

ANNA MELNIK KARWINSKI, 82, of Lions Head South, BRICK, died Sunday, April 18, at home. She was a bookkeeper for Public Service Electric and Gas in Newark for 32 years, retiring in 1980. She was very proud of her Ukrainian heritage and attended St. Stephen's Ukrainian Church, Toms River. She was past president of Lt. George Pietrucha American Legion Unit 319, Irvington, and was active in the Public Service Retired Employees Club, Jersey Shore Chapter, the Lions Head South Ladies Club and the Polish American Club of Toms River. Born in Newark, she lived in Irvington and Livingston before moving to Brick 20 years ago.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Chester; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Anne and Bernard Weiss of Brick, and Jean and Kenneth Dixon of Carlsbad, Calif.; four grandchildren, Eileen Cilino, Brian Weiss, Ashley Anne and Alex Dixon; and a great-grandson, Donovan Michael Cilino.

ARTHUR T. ROSE, of BRICK, died Wednesday, April 14, his 64th birthday, at Ocean Medical Center, Brick. He was employed for 42 years as a HazMat clerk for Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central, Conrail and CSX Intermodal railroads all in South Kearny, retiring in 2003. He was veteran, proudly serving his country in the Army. His best friend was his dog Lucky. Born and raised in Bayonne, he moved to Brick seven years ago.
Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Harriet L. Rosenback Rose; a daughter, Vanessa L. Rose; and a brother, William Rose of Bayonne.

CHARLES W. BOZMAN, 92, MANCHESTER, died Saturday, April 17, at Manchester Manor. He owned Sterling Handling Systems Inc., West Allis, Wis., for 10 years, retiring in 1977. He also worked for Otis Elevator Inc., Yonkers, N.Y., and Harrison, for 10 years prior to that. He was a member of the Pinelands Reformed Church in Toms River and the Leisure Village West Duplicate Bridge Club. He was an avid gardener who loved flowers and took great pride in growing award-winning roses throughout his life. Born in Willow Grove, Pa., he lived in Haworth for 14 years and Brookfield, Wis., for 10 years, moving to Leisure Village West, Manchester, in 1977.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Ruby Hudgins Bozman of Manchester; a son, Gerald Bozman of Oakland; two daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Robert Young of Moorestown, and Cheryl and Dixon Leavers of Bordentown Township; two grandsons, Christopher Bozman and his wife, Merri Lee, and Thomas Bozman; a granddaughter, Melissa Kenny; and two great-grandchildren, Zoe Bozman and William Bozman.
Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 11:15 a.m. Wednesday at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 3010 Ridgeway Road, Manchester, with funeral following at 11:15 a.m. at the funeral home.
