Ellen "Susie" Davis
Retired Teacher; Had Led Girl Scouts and Local PTA
Ellen J. "Susie" Davis, 84, of Barnegat Light, died on Thursday, July 2, 1998 at home.
Born in Salem, West Virginia, she had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Barnegat Light last year.
Mrs. Davis had been a teacher in Scotch Plains for 25 years before retiring.
She was a graduate of Salem College in West Virginia, where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Bachelor of Science Degree.
She was a Past President of the Girl Scouts and the Scotch Plains Parent-Teacher Association. Mrs.
Davis was also a member of the New Jersey Education Association.
Surviving are her husband, William E. Davis; two daughters, Beth Hutchinson of Ship Bottom and Ann Gross of Hopewell Junction, New York; four grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Private funeral services were arranged by the Maxwell Funeral Home in the Manahawkin section of Stafford Township.
James D. Guare, 77
Navy Veteran; Active in Many Local Organizations
James D. Guare, 77, of Garwood died on Sunday, July 5, 1998 at his home.
Born in Newark, he was raised in Perth Amboy and Rahway, and had lived in Garwood for the last 44 years.
Mr. Guare served in the United States Navy Militia prior to World War II, and joined the Navy at age 17.
He was serving aboard the USS Wasp CV7 when it was sunk at Guadalcanal on September 15, 1942.
Mr. Guare served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict, and retired in 1960 after 25 years of active and reserve duty.
He was a member of the Wasp Sting Club since its inception.
Mr. Guare had been employed by Esso/Exxon at Bayway Refinery for 15 years, and retired from Ciba-Geigy Pharmaceuticals of Summit in 1986 after 23 years of service.
He was a 50-year member of the LaFayette Lodge No. 27 of Free and
Accepted Masons, and of Royal Arch No. 26, both of Rahway.
In addition, he was a member of Trinity Commandery No. 17 of the Knights Templar of Plainfield.
Mr. Guare was also a member of the Martin Wallberg Post No. 3 American Legion of Westfield; a life member of Captain Newell Rodney Fiske Post No. 335 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Cranford, and a member of the Old Guard of Westfield.
He was a communicant of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Cranford.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Mary Augustoni Guare; two sons, J. Daniel Guare of Tucson, Arizona and Charles T. Guare of Folsom, California, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 11, at the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue, in Cranford.
Interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Visitation will be today, Thursday, July 9, from 7 to 9 p.m., and tomorrow, Friday, July 10, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Muhlenberg Hospital Hospice or to the Garwood First Aid Squad.
Laura Joy Barker, 92
Laura Joy Barker, 92, died on Sunday, July 5, 1998 at the Ashbrook Nursing Home in Scotch Plains.
Born in North Bergen, the daughter of Floyd and Anna Joy Barker, she had lived there all her life before relocating to Scotch Plains in 1996.
Surviving are 11 nieces and nephews, and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
Arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Interment took place at Grove Church Cemetery in North Bergen.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
John Craig Bailey, 72
John Craig Bailey, 72, of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, July 4, 1998 at his home.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Hillside prior to moving to Scotch Plains in 1950.
Mr. Bailey had worked as a welder for 35 years with the Exxon Corporation in Linden before retiring in 1983.
He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Bailey was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Helen Bailey, in 1962, and by his second wife, Marguerite Bailey, in 1991.
Surviving are a son, Craig M. Bailey; a daughter, Lisa M. Woods, and four grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, July 8, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, following services held at the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Ralph Parente, Sr., 71
Ralph Parente, Sr., 71, of Piscataway, died on Saturday, July 4, 1998 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Italy, he came to the United States in 1954 and had lived in Westfield prior to moving to Piscataway 21 years ago.
Mr. Parente had been a foreman for Design & Molding Services in Piscataway for many years, retiring in 1991.
Surviving are his wife, Pia Parente; two sons, Ralph Parente, Jr. and Nicholas Parente; three daughters, Angela Katz, Rosemarie Rosello and Julianna Deserio; four brothers, Dominic Parente, Giuseppe Parente, Michael Parente and Nichola Parente; two sisters, Marghereta Romanello and Maria Spiridigliozzi, and 12 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, July 8, at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Funeral Home, 556 Westfield Avenue, in Westfield.
Ruth A. Grapel, 92
Ruth A. Newcombe Grapel, 92, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, July 3, 1998 at the Ashbrook Nursing Home in Scotch Plains.
Born in Newark, she had moved to Ocean Grove in 1974, and relocated to Scotch Plains in 1991.
Mrs. Grapel attended St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Ocean Grove, and was a past member of the Upper Montclair Women's Club.
She was predeceased by her first husband, James F. Smith, in 1957, and by her second husband, Harry F. Grapel, in 1971.
Surviving are three sons, Robert J. Smith of Westfield, Arthur J. Smith of Litchfield, Connecticut, and William R. Smith of Utica, New York; seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 7, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, in Westfield.
Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Paul's United Methodist Church Memorial Fund in Ocean Grove, or to a charity of the individual's choice.
Joseph J. Santini, 70
Joseph J. Santini, 70, of Whitehouse Station died on Tuesday, June 30, 1998 at home.
Born in Asbury, he had lived in Bridgewater before moving to Whitehouse Station 20 years ago.
He was a United States Navy veteran and had served in World War II.
Mr. Santini had owned and operated the Santini Farm in Bridgewater before retiring in 1969. He subsequently founded the Golden Key Real Estate Agency in Piscataway, from which he retired in 1996.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and numerous hunting and fishing clubs.
Surviving are his wife, Bernice Santini; four sons, Joseph Santini of Monkton, Maryland, Michael Santini and David Santini, both of Bridgewater, and Peter Santini of Forks Township, Pennsylvania; a daughter, Joanne Geibert of Doylestown, Pennsylvania; a brother, Armand Santini of Westfield; a sister, Rose Darden of Laverne, California, and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 5, at the Kearns Funeral Home in Whitehouse.
