John J. Avenatti, 63
Administrator; Honored for Senior Housing Efforts
John J. Avenatti, 63, of the Forest Lakes section of Byram Township, died on Monday, April 3, 2000 in St. Clare’s Hospital, Dover Division.
Born in Maspeth, N.Y., he had lived in Westfield before moving to Forest Lakes 20 years ago.
Mr. Avenatti was the Administrator of the Brookville Health Care Center in Irvington for the past six months.
He had previously held the positions of Administrator, Executive Director, Executive Vice President, Chief Executive Officer and served on the Board of Trustees of the Westmont Home, Inc. in Wayne and Paterson over a period of 20 years.
He was a member of the Society of Licensed Nursing Home Administrators and served on its Board of Directors since 1972.
Mr. Avenatti also held the positions of Vice President, President, Executive Director and Executive Secretary of the Society.
He was a member of the Governor’s New York Task Force for the White House Conference on Aging from 1980 to 1984; the Passaic County H. E. W. Association; the Byram Senior Citizens Housing Complex Inc. and former New York Governor Mario Cuomo’s Task Force for the Continuing Care Retirement Committee.
Mr. Avenatti additionally was a member of the New Jersey Association of Non-Profit Homes for the Aging from 1979 through 1998; the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging from 1982 through 1998, and the Tri-County Chamber of Commerce in Wayne.
He received the Byram Township Mayor’s Award for Community Service for Senior Citizens Housing in 1983.
A graduate of Brooklyn College, Mr. Avenatti earned a degree in hospital management and nursing home administration from Rutgers University.
He served in the United States Army during peacetime.
Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Elisa Avenatti; a sister, Dolores Lombardo; a stepdaughter, Stephanie Bolwin; a stepson, Harry Rau, and a grandchild.
Private services were arranged by the Smith McCracken Funeral Home in Newton.

Ann De Lazaro, 91
Was Employed For 40 Years With Real Estate Firm
Ann Wojcik De Lazaro, 91, a former Westfield resident, died on Tuesday, April 4, 2000 in the Cranford Health and Extended Care Center.
Born in Elizabeth, she had lived in the city’s Elmora section for most of her life. She later relocated to Westfield and moved to Cranford five years ago.
Mrs. De Lazaro had been employed for 40 years with the Van Ness Corporation in Newark and Spring Lake, beginning as a bookkeeper during the Depression.
She managed the real estate company’s sales and development program, which was responsible for building numerous homes in Bricktown and Monmouth and Ocean Counties between 1940 and 1975.
Mrs. De Lazaro was hired at age 66 by the owner of Paul’s American
Tire Exchange in Springfield, where for the next 15 years she assisted in arranging the acquisition and financing of several parcels along Route 22.
She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Joseph De Lazaro, in 1980, and by her sons, Robert D. De Lazaro in 1998 and S. Walter “Buddy” De Lazaro in 1999.
Surviving are two brothers, Walter Wojcik of Caguas, Puerto Rico and Emil Wojcik of Iselin, and four grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Saturday, April 8, in St. Genevieve’s Roman Catholic Church in Elizabeth.
Interment took place at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery in Colonia.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hope Hospice, 176 Hussa Street, Linden, 07036.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue in Cranford.

Mabel I. Hess, 80
Mabel I. Hess, 80, of the Leisure Village West section of Manchester Township died on Friday, April 7, 2000 in Community Medical Center in Toms River.
Born in Kenilworth, she had lived in Westfield before moving to Manchester Township in 1985.
Surviving are her husband of 53 years, William George Hess; two sons, George Hess and Robert Page; two sisters, Laura Parkinson and Margaret Wesighan, and five grandchildren.
Private services were arranged by the Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home in Lakehurst.

Angie C. Hall
Angie C. Ferrara Hall of Fanwood died on Saturday, April 8, 2000 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Scotch Plains, she lived in Fanwood for the past 47 years.
She was predeceased by her husband, K. Borden Hall, in 1985.
Surviving are two brothers, Philip R. Ferrara of Scotch Plains and Paul F. Ferrara of Wells, Me., and five sisters, Lucy DeFrancesco of Scotch Plains, Clara Ferrara, Jo Beaty and Jean Waldron, all of Flagler Beach, Fla., and Laura Shockey of Dayton, Va.
A Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, April 12, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Interment was at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
Memorial donations may be made to the Fanwood Volunteer Rescue Squad, Inc., care of Robert Kruthers, Treasurer, 218 Forest Road, Fanwood, 07023.

Nicholas Mortarulo, 74
Honored Veteran; Water Company Supervisor for 40 Years
Nicholas A. Mortarulo, 74, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, April 4, 2000 at home.
Born in Summit, he moved to Scotch Plains in 1950.
Mr. Mortarulo had been a supervisor for the New Jersey American Water Company in Short Hills for 40 years before retiring in 1991.
A United States Army veteran of World War II, he was awarded a Purple Heart and two battle stars.
He was a member of the National 4th Infantry Division Association, Veterans of the 4th Infantry Division New York, New Jersey Chapter and a member of Military Order of the Purple Heart, Cranford Chapter.
He was predeceased by his wife, Joan Pampel Mortarulo, in March of 1995.
Surviving are four sons, Anthony Mortarulo, Nicholas W. Mortarulo, James Mortarulo and Robert Mortarulo; four daughters, Jean Foley, Mary Beth Becker, Anne Marie Mortarulo and Patricia Diskin; two brothers, Michael Mortarulo and Mario Mortarulo; two sisters, Antoinette Mortarulo and Mary Zeiss, and nine grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 8, at the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains, followed by a Mass at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Haven Hospice, JFK Medical Center, 65 James Street, P. O. Box 3059, Edison, 08818.

Louise M. Denitzio, 81
Louise M. Denitzio, 81, a lifelong resident of Scotch Plains, died on Sunday, April 9, 2000 at the Greenbrook Manor Nursing Home in Green Brook.
She was predeceased by her husband, William J. Denitzio, in 1991.
Surviving are a son, William Denitzio of Piscataway; a daughter, Mary Anne Powers of Fanwood; a brother, Anthony Verdic of Scotch Plains; a sister, Minnie Macarelli of Scotch Plains, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, April 12, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
Interment followed at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains.
Memorial donations may be made to the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 325, Scotch Plains, 07076.

Mary Wood Hans, 91
Mary Wood Hans, 91, of Westfield died on Tuesday, March 21, 2000 in the Snow Valley Nursing Home in Lisle, Ill.
Born in Philadelphia on July 16, 1908, she had lived in Westfield for more than 35 years and also resided in Jamesburg prior to moving to Illinois.
Mrs. Hans had been employed as a teacher at Abraham Clark Elementary School in Clark prior to her retirement.
While living in Westfield, she was active with Community Concerts and the Musical Club and was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, Charles Hans of Lisle; two sons, Daniel Hans of Bartlett, Ill. and George Hans of Carrollton, Tex.; a daughter, Elizabeth Hans Flanagan of Thornhill, Ontario, Canada; two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Interment will take place in Wind Gap, Pa. at a later date.
