Joseph F. Mellor, Jr., 85
Held Patent; Was Published in Chemistry Journals
Joseph F. Mellor, Jr., 85, of Westfield died on Thursday, August 26, 1999 at home.
Born and raised in Philadelphia, he lived in Westfield since 1951.
Mr. Mellor had been an industrial hygienist with American Cyanamid Company in Wayne from 1951 to 1979. Prior to that, he had worked as the Assistant Director of the Bureau of Industrial Hygiene in Pennsylvania from 1947 to 1951.
He received a patent in 1966 for the recovery of Acrylamide from its salts by vaporization with an inert gas.
Mr. Mellor also had articles published in many technical journals in the chemistry field and had professional affiliations with the Boards of Industrial Hygiene in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry from St. Joseph’s College in Philadelphia in 1935.
He was a First Lieutenant in the United States Army during World War II.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary “Carroll” Mellor.
Surviving are a son, Jay Mellor; two daughters, Carroll Mellor and Bonnie Holmes, and two grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial was held on Monday, August 30, at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Interment was at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made to the Helping Hands and Hearts Fund of St. Helen’s Church.
Charles J. Doyle, 79
Army Veteran; Was Brakeman for the Erie Railroad
Charles J. Doyle, 79, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, August 27, 1999 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Bayonne, he had lived in Jersey City before moving to Scotch Plains 33 years ago.
Mr. Doyle had been employed as a brakeman for the Erie Railroad in Jersey City for many years before retiring in 1984.
A veteran of World War II, he served with the United States Army as a Private First Class in Battery A of the 228th Field Artillery Battalion.
Mr. Doyle was a member of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 209 in Scotch Plains.
He was predeceased by his wife, Kathryn M. Barron Doyle, in March 1994.
Surviving are his brother, Thomas Doyle of Alabama, and two grandsons.
A Mass was offered on Monday, August 30, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church, following the funeral from the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
Interment was at the Forest Green Park Cemetery in Marlboro Township.
Rose J. Marich, 77
Rose J. Marich, 77, of Fanwood died on Friday, August 27, 1999 at home.
Born in Guttenberg, she had lived in West New York before moving to Fanwood in 1959.
Mrs. Marich was a member of the Slovich Catholic Sokol Club.
Surviving is a sister, Helen Prihel.
A Mass was offered in St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains on Tuesday, August 31.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Alice Kellogg, 90
Garden Club Member; Had Lived in Westfield for Over 65 Years
Alice Luellen Kellogg, 90, a former longtime Westfield resident, died on Sunday, August 29, 1999 at The Monroe Village Nursing Home in Jamesburg.
Born in Newton, Mass., she had lived in Westfield for over 65 years.
Mrs. Kellogg was a member of the Westfield Garden Club.
Surviving are her husband of 69 years, Chester M. Kellogg; three sons, C. Burton Kellogg, 2nd of Westfield, Hugh M. Kellogg of Washington Crossing, Pa. and Daniel B. Kellogg of Cherry Grove, S. C.; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were private under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made to Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside.
Wayne Adelmann, Jr., 38
Wayne Adelmann, Jr., 38, of Flemington died on Thursday, August 26, 1999 in the Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington.
Born in Plainfield, he had lived in South Plainfield and in Scotch Plains before moving to Flemington in 1997.
Mr. Adelmann was a store manager with the A&P Corporation in New Providence for 10 years.
He served in the United States Navy during peacetime.
Surviving are his mother, Elaine Giltner; his stepfather, David Giltner; two sisters, Lorraine Layton and Christian Deutsch; two stepbrothers, Steven Giltner and Thomas Giltner, and his grandfather, William Bahrey.
Funeral services were held on Monday, August 30, in the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Florence Madonia, 90
Florence Madonia, 90, of Westfield died Tuesday, August 31, 1999 at home.
Born in Wilmington, Del., she lived in Elizabeth for 80 years before moving to Westfield four years ago.
Mrs. Madonia was a seamstress for a variety of clothing manufacturers in the Elizabeth area for 45 years before retiring in 1971.
She was a member of St. Anne’s Rosary Society, and was also a member of the Senior Citizens Society and a bingo volunteer, all of the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Elizabeth.
Surviving are a son, Joseph Madonia; two daughters, Mary Ann Foster and Patricia Matzek; two brothers, James Picaro and Joseph Picaro; two sisters, Mary LaBracio and Sally Marcantonio; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Friday, September 2, at St. Anthony’s Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Petruccelli Funeral Home in Elizabeth.
Andrew Tasnady, 65
Andrew “Sonny” Tasnady, 65, died on Monday, April 3, 2000 in Florida.
Born in Beacon, N.Y., he had lived in Keasbey and Fords for many years before moving to Freeport, Fla. in 1993.
Mr. Tasnady was predeceased by his wife, the former Shirley Kredul; his parents, Andrew and Margaret Tasnady, and a brother, George Tasnady.
Surviving are two sons, Andrew Tasnady of North Plainfield and Keith Tasnady of Scotch Plains, and four sisters, Margaret May of Woodbridge, Priscilla Bruno of South Seaside Park, Betty Spangler of Inverness, Fla. and Eleanor Seich of Edison.
Private cremation took place in Florida.
