Alexander M. Kassay, Sr., 96, of Fanwood died on Wednesday, May 5, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Austria, Hungary, he had lived in Hillside and Newark before moving to Fanwood 14 years ago.
Mr. Kassay was employed as a polisher at H. Boker & Co. in Maplewood for 47 years before retiring in 1969.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Kubasofsky Kassay, in 1970; and his son, Alexander Kassay, Jr., in 1985.
Surviving are his daughter, Irene E. Zuchowski of Fanwood; two granddaughters; two great-grandsons; and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 8, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
Interment was private.
Frank E. Donahue, 79
Was Machinist At Livingston Wilbur Corp., Fanwood
Frank E. Donahue, 79, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, May 7, 1999 at the Veteran Affairs New Jersey Health Care Center at East Orange.
Born in New York City, he had settled in Scotch Plains in the early 1940s.
Mr. Donahue was a machinist for the Livingston Wilbur Corp., a tool and die company in Fanwood, for 20 years before retiring in 1973.
He was a Boy Scout leader in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood area.
He was a member of the Fanwood Presbyterian Church.
He was a World War II Marine veteran and a member of the AM Vets of Lyndhurst.
Surviving are his wife, Doris M. Falkenberg Donahue; a daughter, Nancy E. Holstein; a son, John F. Donahue; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 12, at the Vanderhoven Chapel at the Hazelwood Cemetery in Rahway.
Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Katherine Berthold, 92
Katherine H. Berthold, 92, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, May 5, 1999 at Ashbrook Nursing Home in Scotch Plains.
Born in Trenton, she had lived in Silver Spring, Maryland before moving to Scotch Plains in 1992.
Mrs. Berthold had worked as a librarian with the United States Information Agency in Washington, D.C. before retiring.
She received a bachelor’s degree from Wilson College and a master’s degree from Columbia University.
She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Berthold, and by her sister, Frances Bellamy.
Surviving is a nephew, Dr. Robert Bellamy; a niece, Carol Bellamy and a grand-nephew.
Arrangements were private and were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood.
Sol Tunis, 86
Sol Tunis, 86, of Westfield died on Tuesday, May 11, 1999 in the Berkeley Hall Nursing Home in Berkeley Heights.
Born in Brooklyn, he had lived in New York City before moving to Westfield four years ago.
Mr. Tunis was a manufacturer of infant clothing in New York City before retiring many years ago.
He was a member of the Men’s Club of Temple Emanu-El in Westfield.
He was a United States Army veteran and had served during World War II.
Surviving are a son, Eric Tunis and two grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held today, Thursday, May 13, at 1 p.m. in Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, New York.
Arrangements were handled by the Kreitzman’s Memorial Home in Union.
Josephine S. Del Monte
Josephine Sorbo Del Monte, of Scotch Plains, died Monday, May 10, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Plainfield, she had lived there until moving to Scotch Plains more than 20 years ago.
She was a communicant of St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church in Plainfield.
She was predeceased by a son, John Francis Del Monte, in 1972.
Surviving are her husband, John Anthony Del Monte, and a sister, Mary Sabo of North Plainfield.
A Funeral Service will be held today, Thursday, May 13, at 10 a.m. at the Higgins Home for Funerals in North Plainfield.
Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains.
Barbara MacKinnon, 75
Secretary; Member of Westfield Woman’s Club
Barbara MacKinnon, 75, of Westfield died on Tuesday, May 11, 1999 at Westfield Center, Genesis ElderCare Network in Westfield.
Born in Massachusetts, she lived in Westfield since 1960.
Mrs. MacKinnon had been a secretary for Blue Cross/Blue Shield in Newark for 20 years before retiring in 1997.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield and of the Woman’s Club of Westfield.
She was predeceased by her husband, Alexander B. MacKinnon, in 1970.
Surviving are her daughter, Caren Kerr of Manter, Kansas, and two grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Joseph O’Har, 85
Joseph O’Har, 85, of Mountainside died on Saturday, May 8, 1999 in the Manor Care Health Services in Mountainside.
Born in Cliffside Park, he had lived in Maplewood before moving to Mountainside seven years ago.
Mr. O’Har was a 1970 graduate of the Newark College of Engineering.
He had been an engineer with the J. Harry McNally Mason Corporation in New York City before retiring 17 years ago.
Surviving is a daughter, Vicki Beth O’Har.
Funeral services were held on Monday, May 10, in the Bernheim-Apter-Goldsticker Suburban Funeral Chapel in Maplewood.
