Virginia A. Cirulli of Italy died on Wednesday, September 8, 1999 at home.
Born in Italy, she lived there her whole life.
Surviving are her son, Umberto Appezzato of Scotch Plains; two grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass was held on Saturday, October 9, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Alfred T. Kaercher, 85
Self-Employed As Furniture Salesman; Was Sculptor
Alfred T. Kaercher, 85, of Cranford died on Sunday, October 10, 1999 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Farmingdale, N.Y., he lived in Westfield for 23 years before moving to Cranford 18 years ago.
Mr. Kaercher was self-employed as a salesman, representing furniture manufacturers for many years.
He was a member of the Furniture Manufacturers Representatives of New Jersey and treasurer of the Springfield Garden Club and the New Jersey Region of the Antique Automobile Club of America.
As a sculptor, Mr. Kaercher was also a member of the Westfield Art Association and the art associations of Somerset and Watchung.
He was awarded the Best In Show award at the Westfield Art Association’s Member Show last December.
Surviving are his wife, Caryl M. Kaercher; a son, Thomas A. Kaercher; two daughters, Katherine A. Kaercher-Peterson and Elizabeth K. Vigilante, and a grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, October 13, in the Trinity Church in Cranford.
Arrangements were handled by the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.
Edith W. Sgarro, 88
Church Deacon; Secretary at Insurance Companies
Edith Wyndham Sgarro, 88, of Mountainside died on Saturday, October 9, 1999 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in The Valesberg section of Newark, she had lived in South Bound Brook before moving to Mountainside in 1956.
Mrs. Sgarro was employed as a secretary for insurance companies, retiring in 1947. From 1956 to 1958, Mrs. Sgarro was a member of The Newcomers Club of Mountainside, later becoming a member of The Mountainside Women's Club. She was President of The Mountainside Women's Club from 1965 to 1967, and served as a Parliamentarian of the club. She was also a member of The Cranford Parliamentarian Club. She held positions with the 6th District of The New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs on the state level.
Mrs. Sgarro was a communicant of The Community Presbyterian Church in Mountainside, where she was a deacon, and a member of its Women's Association.
She was predeceased by her husband, Michael S. Sgarro, in 1998.
Surviving are a daughter, Louise M. Sgarro of Edison and a sister, Lois Conrad of Lansdale, Pa.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 16, at 3 p.m. in The Community Presbyterian Church in Mountainside.
Arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, Westfield.
William E. Swartz, 76
Former Executive For Compensation and Benefits at RCA
William E. Swartz, 76, of Watchung died on Wednesday, October 6, 1999 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Lancaster, Pa., he lived in Westfield before moving to Watchung 20 years ago.
Mr. Swartz was senior vice president of compensation and benefits with the RCA Corporation in New York City, where he was employed for 37 years before retiring in 1986.
He was a 1949 graduate of Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster.
He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He served in the 82nd Airborne Division, landing in Normandy on D-Day.
Mr. Swartz was a member of the Watchung Lions Club.
He was a communicant of St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
He was predeceased by his son, Peter Swartz, in 1980.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Marie Swartz; a son, Patrick Leo Burns of Kensington, Md.; his daughter, Mary Colleen Burns of Liverpool, N.Y.; his sister, Jeanne Leaman of Hershey, Pa., and a grandson.
A Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, October 9, at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung.

Thomas Robinson, Jr., 66
Navy Veteran; Employed at Auto Repair & Paint Shop
Thomas L. Robinson, Jr., 66, of Parkertown died on Monday, October 4, 1999 at home.
Born in Scotch Plains, he had lived in Phillipsburg before moving to Parkertown 15 years ago.
Mr. Robinson was employed by Bob’s Auto Repair & Paint Shop in Plainfield for 18 years, before retiring in 1985. He was a Navy veteran, serving from 1952 to 1956.
Mr. Robinson was a member of the American Legion Post No. 493 of Mystic Island.
Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Ruth I. Daily Robinson; three sons, Thomas L. Robinson, 3rd, of West Creek, Charles Wayne Robinson of Mystic Island and Kenneth James Robinson of Parkertown; his daughter, Vivian Ruth Hagerty of Penargyl, Pa.; his brother, Theodore Robinson; his sister, Theresa Hodge, and eight grandchildren.
Memorial services were held on Friday, October 8, at the Maxwell Funeral Home in Little Egg Harbor. Interment was private.

Robert A. Bell, 83
Robert A. Bell, 83, of Brick died on Tuesday, October 5, 1999 in Brick Hospital.
Born in Highland Park, Mich., he lived in Fanwood before moving to Brick 19 years ago.
Mr. Bell was a tool-and-die maker for the Elastic Stop Nut Company in Union for 41 years, before retiring 19 years ago.
He was the first president and organizer of the Elastic Stop Nut Quarter Century Club in Union.
He was also an associate of the Boy Scouts in Fanwood and a member of the Speakers Bureau and Union Local No. 726 in Union of the United Auto Workers Union.
Surviving are his wife, Elsa Bell; two sons, Robert W. Bell and Ronald A. Bell; a brother, Albert E. Bell; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Friday, October 8, in the Colonial Funeral Home in Brick.
Paul T. McCaffrey, 69
Was Employed With Macy’s Credit Bureau, Cranford
Paul T. McCaffrey, 69, of Fallstone, Md. died on Wednesday, October 6, 1999 at Fallstone General Hospital in Maryland. Born in Plymouth, Pa., he lived in Scotch Plains, then Dunellen for 22 years before moving to Fallstone four years ago.
Mr. McCaffrey worked for Macy’s credit bureau in Cranford, retiring in 1995.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Surviving are his daughter, Karen McCaffrey of Silver Springs, Md.; two sons, Martin McCaffrey of Sparta and Alan McCaffrey of Fallstone, and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 9, at the Schimunek Funeral Home in Bel Air, Md. Burial was held at the Bel Air Memorial Gardens in Bel Air, Md.
