Arthur R. Pfeiffer, 85
Arthur R. Pfeiffer, 85, of Bound Brook died on Saturday, May 20, 2000 at home.
Born in Westfield, he lived in Bound Brook since 1941.
Mr. Pfeiffer had been a machine operator for Thermionics in North Plainfield before retiring in 1990.
He was a member of The Clovers in Westfield and Mountainside.
He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Bertha Ann Pfeiffer, in 1998.
Surviving are a son, William A. Pfeiffer of Bound Brook.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 23.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Altona T. Caldwell
Altona T. Caldwell, 68, of Fanwood died on Saturday, May 20, 2000 at home.
Born in Lynchburg, Va., she had lived there before moving to Fanwood 30 years ago.
Mrs. Caldwell had worked as a registered nurse at Beth Israel Hospital in Newark for 16 years before retiring in 1996.
She graduated from Dunbar High School in Lynchburg and from the Good Samaritan School of Nursing in Charlotte, N. C., in 1953.
She was a member of St. John’s Baptist Church in Scotch Plains and the Nurses Association of New Jersey.
Surviving are her husband, Haywood W. Caldwell; a daughter, Deborah A. Caldwell of Broken Arrow, Okla., and three brothers, Paul S. Trimiar, Jr. of Lanham, Md., Otha O. Trimiar of Washington, D. C. and Conrad Trimiar of Dallas-Fort Worth, Tex.
Funeral services will be held at St. John’s Baptist Church today, Thursday, May 25, at noon.
Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the church.
Arrangements are being handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
Jerry Lee, 84
United States Navy Veteran; Was Active With Bethel Baptist Church
Jerry Lee, 84, a lifelong Westfield resident, died on Thursday, May 18, 2000 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Mr. Lee had worked for the Spray Drying Company in Garwood and the Plinton Funeral Home in Westfield for many years before retiring.
He was a member of the choir, the Usher Board and Men’s Fellowship of the Bethel Baptist Church in Westfield.
He also was a member of the Centennial Lodge No. 400, the Elks Lodge and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of Westfield.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Lee; a son, Jerry Franklin; a daughter, Velma C. Lee; two stepsons, Christopher Brown and Walter Brown; a stepdaughter, Jacqueline Brown; a sister, Nancy Lee Darby; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services were held yesterday, Wednesday, May 24, in the Bethel Baptist Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Plinton Curry Funeral Home.
Joseph Tusso, 90
Was Sales Manager With ITT in New York for 35 Years
Joseph R. Tusso, 90, of Denville died on Thursday, May 18, 2000 at the Franciscan Oaks Life Care Center in Denville.
Born in New York City, he resided in Westfield before relocating to Denville in 1995.
Mr. Tusso had been employed for 35 years with ITT in New York City as an import sales manager before retiring in 1974.
He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from Fordham University in the Bronx.
He was a Past President of the Franciscan Oaks Residential Council and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America.
Mr. Tusso was a senior member of I.E.E.E. and also a member of the ITT Export Corporation.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the United States Coast Guard, attaining the rank of Lieutenant.
He was predeceased by his wife, Helen Blair Tusso, in 1992.
Surviving are a daughter, Karen Wasserman of Westfield; a son, Robert J. Tusso of Chatham, and two grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, May 22, in St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
James E. Herrick, Sr., 79
First Detective With Mountainside Police Department
James E. Herrick, Sr., 79, of Mountainside died on Tuesday, October 5, 1999 in the Berkeley Convalescent Center in Berkeley Heights.
Born in Mountainside, he was a lifelong resident.
Mr. Herrick was a lieutenant and first detective with the Mountainside Police Department for 28 years.
He was later employed as a security officer for All State Legal Supply Company in Cranford for 11 years before retiring in 1991.
He had served with the Coast Guard during World War II and was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the Navy Occupation Service Medal with an Asia Clasp and the World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Herrick was a member of the Policemen’s Benevolent Association Local No. 126 in Mountainside, where he received the honorary Silver Shield.
He was also a member of the American Legion Martin Wallberg Post No. 3 in Westfield and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Mountainside.
Surviving are his wife, Veronica Herrick; a son, James E. Herrick, Jr.; a daughter, Marianne Bergeski; a twin brother, Bernard Herrick, and six grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was held on Friday, October 8, in Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Mountainside.
Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Frances Crane Bourns
Frances Crane Bourns, 94, of Albuquerque, N.M., died on August 28, 1999 at La Vida Llena Health Care Center in Albuquerque.
Born in Hillside in 1905, she lived in Westfield for 40 years before moving to Jamesburg in the early 1970s and to Albuquerque in 1992.
Mrs. Bourns was a graduate of Bradford Junior College and the College of Wooster.
She was a communicant of the First Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
Mrs. Bourns was active in the Rahway Hospital Auxiliary.
She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Edward Gordon Bourns, in February 1999.
Surviving are her three daughters, Barbara Bourns of San Francisco, Calif., Nancy Halpern of Menlo Park, Calif., and Elizabeth Maloney of Jacksonville, Fla.; son, Dr. Gordon Bourns of Albuquerque; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A double memorial service for Dr. and Mrs. Bourns will be held on Saturday, October 30, at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in both names may be made to the Rahway Hospital Foundation 865 Stone Street, Rahway, 07065.
William J. Ditzel, 83
Was Councilman; President of W.A. Birdsall and Company
William J. Ditzel, 83, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., died on Monday, October 11, 1999 at his home.
Born in Westfield, he lived in Mountainside and moved to Port St. Lucie 22 years ago.
Mr. Ditzel was President of W. A. Birdsall and Company in Linden before he retired.
He was a past councilman and chairman of the Mountainside Recreation Committee and was also past president of the Kiwanis Club in Mountainside.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Helen Ditzel; two sons, Tom Ditzel of New Providence and Jim Ditzel of Atlanta, Ga., and four grandchildren.
A Funeral Service was held on Tuesday, October 12, at the Aycock Funeral Home Chapel in Port St. Lucie. Interment was at All Saints Cemetery in Jensen Beach, Fla.
