Hans Nagel, 63
Hans Nagel, 63, of Linden died on Thursday, August 12, 1999 in Rahway Hospital in Rahway.
Born in Tettnang, Germany, he lived in Irvington and Scotch Plains before moving to Linden 15 years ago.
Mr. Nagel owned Jersey Refrigeration of Linden for 10 years.
He was a member of the Hillside Lions Club and the Airlines, Owners, Pilots Association.
Surviving are a son, Hans Nagel; three daughters, Cynthia Stragauskas, Sandra Gregory and Christine Nagel, and four grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled by the Corey & Corey Funeral Home in Rahway.
Charles Gantner
Former Area High School Swim Coach
Charles J. Gantner, Sr., 79, died on Sunday, July 4, 1999 in San Antonio, Tex.
Born in Garfield, he had lived most of his life in Piscataway.
Mr. Gantner had worked in the business world prior to becoming a counselor and swim coach at Westfield High School.
He lead the swim team to numerous state championship titles.
He attended Princeton University and graduated from Rutgers University with a Masters in Business Administration.
He was a former National Swimming Champion and World Record Holder and was a member of the honorary Olympic Team of 1994.
Mr. Gantner was a U. S. Marine Corps officer and combat veteran of the Pacific Campaign of World War II.
He was the recipient of numerous medals including the Purple Heart for wounds received in Okinawa.
He was predeceased by his wife, Nancy Gatner.
Surviving are a son, Charles Gantner, Jr.; a daughter, Carol Collins, and three grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 21, at 10 a.m. at Resurrection Burial Park Chapel, Hoes Lane, Piscataway.
Arrangements are being handled by the Piscataway Funeral Home in Piscataway.
Venola Ealey-Moore, 85
Cosmetologist In Westfield; Deaconess of Area Church
Venola Elizabeth Williams Ealey-Moore, 85, of Plainfield, died on Thursday, August 12, 1999 at the Genesis Health Care Center in Plainfield.
Born in Little Plymouth, Va. on December 6, 1913, the daughter of John H. and Louisa Byrd Williams, she had lived in Philadelphia, Westfield and Scotch Plains before moving to Plainfield in 1991.
She was a 1941 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Cosmetology, and had owned her own business in Westfield for many years before retiring.
Mrs. Ealey-Moore served as a deaconess at the Bethel Baptist Church in Westfield, and was a member of the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Scotch Plains and the Second Mount Olive Baptist Church in Little Plymouth.
She was predeceased by her husband, William Moore, in 1965, and by her father, mother and oldest brother.
Surviving are a son, the Reverend James W. Ealey of Rahway; three sisters, Marcella Hayes of Philadelphia, Elzena White of New Market, N. H. and Angelian Gwatheny of King and Queen County, Va.; three brothers, John Williams and Roger Williams, both of Philadelphia, and Matthew Williams of King and Queen County; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held yesterday, Wednesday, August 18, at the Bethel Baptist Church.
Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Plinton-Curry Funeral Home in Westfield.
Mary M. Briggs, 86
Mary M. McMahon Briggs, 86, of Westfield died on Friday, August 13, 1999 at home.
Born in Westbury, N.Y., she moved to Westfield in 1941.
Mrs. Briggs was a homemaker. She was active at the Holy Trinity and St. Helen's Roman Catholic Churches, both of Westfield.
Mrs. Briggs and her late husband, John R. Briggs, had coordinated the Celebration of the Eucharist once a week at the Westfield Center, Genesis ElderCare Network for more than 27 years.
She also served with the Women's Auxiliary for the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad and belonged to Amity of Westfield.
Surviving are a daughter, Councilwoman Peggy Briggs of Garwood; son, Jack Briggs of Derry, N. H.; a sister, Rose Bennett of Westbury, N.Y. and two grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Mrs. Briggs' nephew, Monsignor John Bennett, at St. Helen's Church on Tuesday, August 17.
Interment was at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made to the Center for Hope Hospice or to the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad.
William C. Lyons, 70
Was Army Veteran; Owned Advanced Electronics Corporation
William C. Lyons, 70, of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, August 14, 1999 at his son Daniel Lyons' home in Perrineville.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Iselin before moving to Scotch Plains in 1985.
Mr. Lyons owned the Advanced Electronic Corporation, a distribution company for General Electric, serving hotels and motels.
He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Lyons was a member of the American Legion Post No. 209 of Scotch Plains and the Knights of Columbus councils in Iselin and Westfield.
He was predeceased by his brother, Donal Lyons.
Surviving are three sons, William A. Lyons, Daniel W. Lyons and Scott T. Lyons; two daughters, Deborah Ann Lyons and Diane Schwabenbauer; a brother, Robert Lyons; a sister, Nancy O'Neil, and six grandchildren.
He is also survived by Elizabeth Lyons.
A Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, August 18, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains, following the funeral service from the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Interment was at St. Gertrude's Cemetery in Colonia.
Memorial donations may be made to Muhlenberg Hospice, Park Avenue and Randolph Road, Plainfield.
Dr. Irving Taylor
Air Force Veteran; Former Optometrist in Scotch Plains
Dr. Irving W. Taylor of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, August 14, 1999 in Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
Born in New York, he lived in Scotch Plains most of his life.
Dr. Taylor, an optometrist, had maintained a private practice in Scotch Plains before retiring.
He served in the United States Air Force Reserves during World War II.
Dr. Taylor was a trustee of Temple Sholom in Plainfield.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred Taylor; a son, Frederic Taylor; a daughter, Pamela Ahlborn; a sister, Rose Taylor, and a grandchild.
A memorial service was held on Monday, August 16, at Temple Sholom.
Arrangements were handled by the Higgins Home for Funerals in Plainfield.
Edmond O. Sargent, 69
Retired Foreman; Was With Piscataway Road Dept. 31 Years
Edmond O. Sargent, 69, a lifelong resident of Piscataway died on Saturday, August 14, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Mr. Sargent had been a foreman with the Piscataway Road Department for 31 years, retiring in 1987.
He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Sargent was a member of the Atlantic Coast Old Timers Auto Racing Club and of Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church in Piscataway.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Bock Sargent; two daughters, Daun Bahooshian of Stewartsville and Melissa Armstrong of Lebanon; a brother, William Sargent of North Plainfield; two sisters, Ellen McKeever of Bridgewater and Hannah Rieley of Scotch Plains, and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held yesterday, Wednesday, August 18, at Our Lady of Fatima Church.
Interment was at the Holy Redeemer Cemetery in South Plainfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Sheenan Funeral Home in Dunellen.
