Herbert G. Guillaume, 78
Owned Firms; Created New System for Mixing Gases
Herbert G. Guillaume, 78, of
Maplewood died on Sunday, November 29, 1998 at home.
Born in Buffalo, New York, had
also lived in Scotch Plains.
Mr. Guillaume was the founder
and owner of three firms which
manufactured specialty gases for
commercial use.
He had owned Pressure Industries
of Plainfield, and Ideal Gas
Products of Edison, from 1977 until
his retirement in 1983.
Prior to that, he had been Vice
President of Cryogenic Rare Gases
in Newark from 1975 to 1977. He
had operated his first company,
Precision Gas Products of Scotch Plains,
from 1963 until 1975.
Mr. Guillaume graduated from the
University of Buffalo in New York
with a degree in chemistry.
He began his career in 1944 with
Linde Air Products, a division of
Union Carbide, in Tonawanda, New
York.
In the mid-1960s, Mr. Guillaume
developed a highly accurate system
of mixing industrial gases by weight
instead of pressure.
Surviving are his wife, Maura
Guillaume; five daughters, Patrice
Karahalios, Marcia Decker, Denise
Wyckoff, Jane Dillonaire and Diane
Kiesel; two sons, Keith Guillaume
and Greg Guillaume, and 15 grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on
Tuesday, December 1, in the Jacob A.
Holle Funeral Home in Maplewood.
Irene Cross, 84
Owned Fanwood Deli; Member of Eastern Star in Westfield
Irene V. Cross, 84, of Whiting died
on Monday, November 30, 1998 at home.
Born in Jersey City, she had lived in
Fanwood before moving to Whiting.
Mrs. Cross owned and operated the
Fanwood Deli for many years.
She was a member of the Order of
Eastern Star Atlas Chapter in Westfield.
Obituaries
Surviving are a son, Theodore Cross;
two stepsons, Clifford R. Cross and
Richard H. Cross, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held yesterday,
Wednesday, December 2, in the
Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home
in Whiting.
Carlo Cuccaro, 68
Army Veteran; Supervisor At Westfield Post Office
Carlo Cuccaro, 68, of Garwood died
on Tuesday, November 24, 1998 at home.
Born in Italy, he had lived in Westfield
before moving to Garwood in 1971.
Mr. Cuccaro had been a supervisor
in the Westfield Post Office, where he
worked for 40 years before retiring in
1990.
He served in the United States Army
during the Korean Conflict.
He was a member of the Knights of
Columbus Council No. 5437 in
Garwood.
Surviving are a daughter, Carla A.
Cuccaro; two sons, Thomas J. Cuccaro
and James E. Cuccaro; a sister, Ursula
Cuccaro, and two grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Friday, November 27,
in St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church in
Garwood, following the funeral from the
Werson Funeral Home in Linden.
Anna D. Kane, 74
Held Two Degrees; Chansonettes and Choral Arts Member
Anna D. Kane, 74, of Westfield died
on Saturday, November 28, 1998 in
Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Bayonne in 1924, Mrs. Kane
attended the Katharine Gibbs secretarial
school. She earned an associate's
degree from Union County College in
1984 and graduated summa cum laude
with a bachelor's degree in English
from Kean University in 1993.
She had worked at Rings for Drums,
the family manufacturing business, and
was also active in the Choral Arts Society,
the Chansonettes, and the Holy
Trinity Roman Catholic Church, all of
Westfield.
Mrs. Kane had worked for Union
County College for 14 years, retiring in
1996 as Executive Secretary for Student Affairs.
She also presented a series of literary readings
at the school, published articles on women
writers, acted in plays, and promoted numerous
other college activities.
At the time of her death, Mrs. Kane
was pursuing her master's degree at
Drew University in Madison, and had
recently completed a master gardener
course.
She was predeceased by two of her
eight children.
Surviving are her husband of 50 years,
James T. Kane; six children and seven
grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated at
the Holy Trinity Church on Tuesday,
December 1, with members of her family officiating at the service and participating in the eulogy. Burial took place
at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Funeral arrangements were handled
by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556
Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations
may be made to the American Cancer
Society, 507 Westminster Avenue,
P.O. Box 815, Elizabeth 07207-0815,
or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Ruth Coulbourn, 90
Active in GOP; Courier-News Reporter for 30 Years
Ruth Murphy Coulbourn, 90, of
Scotch Plains died on Monday, November 30, 1998 at home.
Born in Baltimore, she had lived in
Astoria, New York before moving to
Scotch Plains in 1935.
Mrs. Coulbourn was a news reporter
for The Courier-News for 30 years,
retiring in 1970. She was also a writer
for the National Foundation for
Infantile Paralysis in Westfield.
She was active in the Scotch Plains
Republican Club and served as a
Republican committeewoman in District
No. 4 for many years.
She was a charter member of the
Scotch Plains Woman's Club and of the
First United Methodist Church in Scotch
Plains.
Her husband, William H. Coulbourn,
died in 1976.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary
Jane Haiback of New Jersey and Nancy
C. Ike of Ohio; six grandchildren and
eight great-grandchildren.
Private services are being arranged
by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch
Plains. Visitation will take place today,
Thursday, December 3, from 2 to 4 p.m.
and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral
home.
Irene Koller, 91
Worked in Banking; Active in Red Cross, Scouting, Churches
Irene Koller, 91, of Scotch Plains
died on Monday, November 30, 1998 at
Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center
in Plainfield.
Born in New York City on January
23, 1907, the daughter of the late Samuel
and Daisy Tolson Gluck, she had lived
in Chicago before moving to Scotch
Plains 36 years ago.
Mrs. Koller, who began her career in
the Trust Department of a major New
York bank, eventually became Assistant
Personnel Director at Chemical Bank
of New York.
She retired in 1945 to become a homemaker.
She served as a Gray Lady at the
Veterans Hospital in Chicago and later
in Providence, Rhode Island, where she
logged approximately 20, 000 hours of
service.
Mrs. Koller was among the organizers of
the Woodridge Congregational
Church in Cranston, Rhode Island, and
also served as a Deaconess.
She also organized and was the first
President of the Garden Club of Garden
City in Cranston.
Mrs. Koller was a Girl Scout leader
and later became an instructor for Girl
Scout leaders. She was a board member
for the Visiting Nurses Association and
served with the Cranston Chapter of the
American Red Cross.
She was elected to the Cranston School
Board and served as its Finance
Chairwoman.
Mrs. Koller was a member of the
First Congregational Church of
Westfield. She was a member of the
Women's Fellowship and served as
Secretary, Chairwoman of the World
Service Committee, and was a member
of the Reader's Group. She was recently
a member of the Nominating Committee for
the church Board of Trustees.
Mrs. Koller served on the Environmental
Committee in Scotch Plains.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years,
Henry F. Koller, and two brothers,
Edward S. Gluck of Queens and Alfred E.
Gluck of Toms River.
A Memorial Service will be held on
Saturday, December 12, at 4 p.m. at the
First Congregational Church.
Funeral arrangements and private
burial were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in
Westfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions
may be made to the First Congregational
Church, 125 Elmer Street in Westfield.
Stephen Pida
Stephen Pida of Mountainside died
on Friday, November 27, 1998 in the
Manahawkin Convalescent Center.
Born in Clifton, Mr. Pida had been
Vice President of manufacturing with
the Bristol-Myers Squibb Corporation
in Hillside before his retirement.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine
Pida; a daughter, Kathryn Ortleb; a
sister, Mary Shivetts; two grandchildren
and a great-grandchild.
Private services were arranged by
the Maxwell Funeral Home in
Manahawkin.
