Lewis Strohmeyer, 76, Played Santa; Was Recognized by Borough Council
Lewis Strohmeyer, 76, of
Mountainside died Wednesday, November 25, 1998 in Rahway Hospital.
Born in Georges Run, Ohio, he lived
in Mountainside for 43 years.
Mr. Strohmeyer was a foreman with
Gordon Construction in Linden for 35
years, before retiring 15 years ago.
He dressed as Santa Claus in
Mountainside for several years and
performed at the Christmas tree
lighting and the Elks Lodge of
Mountainside.
Mr. Strohmeyer received a commendation
last month from the Mountainside
Borough Council for his service to
the town.
He was a member of the Elks and
Lions Club, both of Mountainside. He
also was a past worshipful master of
the Masonic Lodge Free and Accepted
Masons in Essex County and a member
of the Free and Accepted Masons
lodges in Cranford and Westfield.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years,
Alice Strohmeyer; three daughters,
Margaret Osmulski, Alice Lewise
Bryan, and Lucie Lynch; five brothers,
Ernest Strohmeyer, Dan Strohmeyer,
Ken Strohmeyer, Ben Strohmeyer, and
Floyd Strohmeyer; three sisters,
Dorothy Snifeld, Phyllis Dunfee and Viola
Lee; three grandchildren, and a
great-grandchild.
A Memorial Service was held on
Sunday, December 6, in the Community
Presbyterian Church in Mountainside.
Funeral arrangements were handled
by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East
Broad Street in Westfield.
Charles L. Hagetter, 79
Charles L. Hagetter, 79, of Whiting
died Tuesday, December 1, 1998 in the Logan Manor Nursing Home in Whiting.
Born in Brooklyn, he lived in Newark, Garwood and Westfield, before
moving to Whiting in 1989.
Mr. Hagetter worked for Bell Labs
in Murray Hill for 42 years, before
retiring as a method analyst in 1984.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years,
Alice Hagetter; a daughter, Sharon Ann
Jones; a sister, Katherine Michenfelder,
and two grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass was offered on
Saturday, December 5, in
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Whiting.
Funeral arrangements were handled
by the Manchester Memorial Funeral
Home in Whiting.
John H. Surridge, 67
Army Corporal; Awarded Bronze Star in Korean Conflict
John H. Surridge, 67, of Scotch
Plains died on Sunday, December 6, 1998
at home.
Born in The Bronx, he had lived in
East Orange before moving to Scotch
Plains 34 years ago.
Mr. Surridge had been a business
administrator in the Medical
Department for Exxon Corporation in
Linden, Florham Park, and Clinton.
He retired in 1986 after 26 years.
He attended Columbia University
in New York City.
Mr. Surridge served as a Corporal
in the United States Army during the
Korean Conflict between 1952 and
1954. He received the Bronze Star.
He was a member of St. Bartholomew
the Apostle Roman Catholic Church
in Scotch Plains.
He was predeceased by his daughter,
Theresa Marie Surridge, in 1973.
Surviving are his wife of 36 years,
Helen Smela Surridge; a daughter,
Rebecca Anne Sugalski of
Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, and a sister,
Isabel Whelan of Summit.
Funeral services will be held at
9 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, December 11,
at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155
South Avenue in Fanwood, followed
by a Mass at 10 a.m. at St.
Bartholomew the Apostle Church.
Visitation will take place today,
Thursday, December 10, from 2 to 4
p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the
funeral home.

contributions may be made to

Julia Thomas, 83
Retired Bank Officer; Active in Local Organizations and Parish
Julia Shea Thomas, 83, of Scotch
Plains died on Wednesday, December 2, 1998 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Plainfield, she lived in
Scotch Plains for more than 40 years.
Mrs. Thomas had been a bank
officer at First Fidelity Bank, now
First Union, in Scotch Plains, and
had also worked in the bank's
Plainfield, Middlesex and Berkeley
Heights offices before retiring 13
years ago.
She was a member of the Immaculate
Heart of Mary Roman Catholic
Church and of the Laurel League,
both in Scotch Plains, and was a
member and Past President of the
Quota Club of Plainfield.
Mrs. Thomas was also a member
of the Plainfield Country Club in
G. Harlow Gardner, 90
G. Harlow Gardner, 90, died on
Saturday, December 5, 1998 at the Harvest
Village Retirement Community in
Atco.
Born in New York City, he had lived
in Fanwood and in Ocean City before
moving to Atco.
Mr. Gardner had been employed by
Hanover Bank and the Manufacturers
Hanover Trust Company on Wall Street
in New York City for 50 years.
He was active in the Knights of
Columbus in Ocean City and the
Assumption Roman Catholic Church of
Atco.
He was predeceased by his wife,
Loretta A. Gardner, in 1997.
Surviving are a daughter, Clare
Colangelo; two sons, Joseph Gardner
and Donald Gardner, and eight grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 9 to 11
a.m. on Saturday, December 12, at the
LeRoy P. Wooster Funeral Home in
Atco. A Mass will follow at 11:30 a.m.
at the Assumption Church.
Memorial contributions may be
made to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
Mary M. Brooks, 91
Mary Marie Brooks, 91, of Scotch
Plains died on Saturday, December 5, 1998
at home.
Born in Minnesota, she had lived in
New York and in North Arlington before
moving to Scotch Plains in 1972.
Mrs. Brooks was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Scotch
Plains Golden Agers and the Calvary
Christian Fellowship Calvary Tabernacle in Elizabeth.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Brooks.
Surviving are a son, Richard Brooks
of North Bergen; four daughters, Fran
Stutts of Boynton Beach, Florida; Joan
Ranne of Garfield; Maryann Criqui of
Scotch Plains and Judy Byrouty of
Lakehurst; two sisters, Helen
Massingale of California and Fran
Thomas of Minnesota; eight grandchildren;
seven great-grandchildren
and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held yesterday,
Wednesday, December 9, at the
Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
