Eugene J. Burns, 78
Eugene J. Burns, 78, of Westfield died on Saturday, April 17, 1999 in the Somerset Medical Center in Somerville.
Born in Newark, he lived in Westfield for many years.
Mr. Burns had been a research chemist for the National Starch Company in Bridgewater for 40 years before retiring in 1985.
Surviving are his brother-in-law, John Marciniak of Westfield.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 20, in the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
Entombment took place at Woodbridge Memorial Gardens.
Marie H. Hanson, 90
Was Member Of Choir, Soloist and Conductor
Marie Hyldahl Hanson, 90, of Bridgewater died on Wednesday, April 14, 1999 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville.
Born in Plainfield, she had lived in Perth Amboy and Clark before moving to Bridgewater in 1991.
Mrs. Hanson was an active choir member, soloist and associate conductor at the First United Methodist Church in Westfield.
She was also a 50-year member of the Raritan Chapter No. 58 O.E.S. in Perth Amboy.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Stanley Hyldahl, in 1973, and her second husband, Warren Hanson, in 1983.
Surviving is a son, Bruce C. Hyldahl of Basking Ridge; a sister, Alice Graf of Monroe, New York; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood.

Katherine Klimak, 84
Katherine A. Klimak, 84, of Westfield died on Thursday, April 15, 1999 in the Ashbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotch Plains.
Born in Cranford, she had lived in Westfield for many years.
Mrs. Klimak had been a bookkeeper for the Suburban Trust Company in Cranford for many years before retiring in 1980.
Previously, she had been employed with the Alcoa Aluminum Company in Garwood.
Surviving are three sons, Charles Burke, John Burke and Ed Burke; a sister, Louise Yannuzzi; a brother, John Tinnesz; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Monday, April 19, in St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Cranford.
Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
Richard E. Peterson, 89
Was Manager Of Personnel at GAF Corp. in New York
Richard Everett Peterson, 89, of Louisville, Kentucky died on Thursday, April 15, 1999 in the Jefferson Manor Nursing Home in Louisville.
Born in The Bronx, he had lived in Westfield and in Scotch Plains before moving to Louisville 11 years ago.
Mr. Peterson had been a personnel manager for the GAF Corporation in New York City before retiring.
He was a member of the Thurston Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution in Louisville.
He graduated from Harvard University, and was a member of the Harvard Alumni Association.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth Laird of Prospect, New York; a son, Richard B. Peterson of Prospect; a daughter, Jean Sinnott of Wilmington, North Carolina; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Monday, April 19, in the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Louisville.
Arrangements were handled by the Pearson’s Funeral Home in Louisville.
Irene J. Hynes, 92
Irene J. Hynes, 92, of Springfield died on Monday, April 19, 1999 in Union Hospital.
Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Mountainside for 20 years before moving to Springfield 10 years ago.
Mrs. Hynes was a factory worker at Schiffi Embroidery in Palisades Park for many years before retiring 30 years ago.
Surviving are two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 20, in the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue, West in Cranford.
Frederick Sberna, 75
Army Veteran; With Carpenters’ Union for 40 Years
Frederick Sberna, 75, of Westfield died on Sunday, April 18, 1999 in the Westfield home of his daughter, Marion Mogielnicki.
Born in Bordentown, he had lived in Staten Island and in Cranford before moving to Westfield last year.
Mr. Sberna had been a carpenter employed by Carpenters Local No. 715 in Elizabeth for 40 years before retiring 10 years ago.
He was a member of the Kenilworth Senior Citizens Club.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and a Past
Commander of the Disabled American Veterans.
Also surviving are another daughter, Terry L. Sberna; two sisters, Rose Saramucci and Josie Tessatore; two brothers, Louis Sberna and Anthony Sberna, and two grandchildren.
A Funeral Liturgy was held on Wednesday, April 21, in St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
Thomas Callahan, 64
Served in Air Force; Former Engineer for Township of Clark
Thomas J. Callahan, 64, of Bedminster died on Friday, April 16, 1999 at the Harborside Woods Edge Care Center in Bridgewater.
Born in Morristown, he had lived in Fanwood before moving to Bedminster seven years ago.
Mr. Callahan had been a licensed land surveyor and was self-employed for 25 years before retiring five years ago.
He had previously been employed as the Assistant Township Engineer in Clark.
He was a Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 5730 in Scotch Plains, and a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Watchung Assembly.
Mr. Callahan was a member of the Somerville Elks Lodge, No. 1068, and a Past Exalted Ruler of the former Clark-Scotch Plains Elks Lodge. He was a member of the New Jersey Christmas Tree Growers Association.
He was a member of St. Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church in Far Hills.
Mr. Callahan was a United States Air Force veteran and served in the 1950s during peacetime.
He attended the Newark College of Engineering.
Surviving are his wife, Marie B. Callahan; two sons, Brian T. Callahan of Belle Mead and Major Timothy G. Callahan, United States Marine Corps, of San Francisco; a daughter, Cathleen M. Russo of Bridgewater, and six grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 20, at the Layton Funeral Home in Bedminster, followed by a Mass at St. Elizabeth’s Church.
