Beatrice W. Scott, 83
Beatrice Louise Woodruff Scott, 83, of Royersford, Pennsylvania, died on Saturday, September 13, 1997 at Pottstown Memorial Medical Center in Pennsylvania.
Born in Westfield, Mrs. Scott had lived in Plainfield before moving to Royersford two years ago.
She had worked at Helen Elliott Candies in North Plainfield for 20 years, retiring in 1960.
She was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Plainfield.
Her husband, Richard Scott, died in 1993.
Surviving are two daughters, Reenie Santoro of Norristown, Pennsylvania and Mary Ann Zegarski of Warren, and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 16, at the Higgins Home for Funerals in North Plainfield, followed by a Mass at St. Mary’s Church.

Herbert D. Thomas, 76
Herbert D. Thomas, 76, of Toms River, formerly of Westfield, died on Saturday, September 13, 1997 at Community Hospital in Toms River.
Born in Newark, he had moved to Westfield in 1960 and to Toms River two years ago.
He had been a stationary engineer for Ciba-Geigy Pharmaceutical Company in Summit for more than 20 years, retiring in 1988.
He was a United States Army veteran of WW II.
He was a member of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield, where he was active in the Christmas Pageant Theatricals.
Surviving are, his wife, Eleanor Williams Thomas; a daughter, Gail Dennise Thomas of Westfield; a son, Nairobi Sailcat of Carlsbad, California, and two grandsons.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 20, at the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue, West, in Cranford. Friends are invited to visit at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Interment will take place in Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Dana W. Slayman, 69
Dana Webb Slayman, 69, formerly of Westfield, died on Friday, September 12, 1997 at Los Robles Hospital in Thousand Oaks, California.
Born and educated in Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. Slayman had lived in Westfield from 1978 to 1985. While living in the town, she had been a secretary in the Westfield High School Principal’s Office.
In Thousand Oaks, she was an active member of the Los Robles Hospital Volunteers and of the hospital’s Bunny Bee Auxiliary.
Surviving are her husband, Robert Slayman; a son, Thomas Slayman of Redlands, California; two daughters, Julie Naranjo of Redlands and Catherine Nicolella of West Des Moines, Iowa; her mother, Helen Webb of Des Moines; her sister, Colleen Dillon of Des Moines, and six grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Monday, September 15, at Pierce Brothers Griffin Mortuary in Thousand Oaks. A family service and burial will be held later in Des Moines.
Ruth C. Packard, 104
Ruth C. Packard, 104, died on Thursday, December 27, 2001 at Normandy Farms Estates Medical Facility in Blue Bell, Pa.
Born in Jermyn, Lackawanna County, Pa., the daughter of the late Barnabas and Bertha Daniels Carter, she had lived in Metuchen and in Westfield for more than 40 years before moving to Normandy Farms Estates in 1985.
Mrs. Packard graduated from Jermyn High School in 1914 and from East Stroudsburg Normal School in 1916. She taught school in Greenfield Township School for five years prior to her marriage in 1923.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield and active in the Monthly Church Circle.
She was predeceased by her husband of more than 71 years, Preston K. Packard, in 1994, and by a son, David C. Packard, in April of 2001.
Surviving are two daughters, Doris P. Meadors of Baton Rouge, La. and Diane P. Williams of Clearwater, Fla.; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Private arrangements were under the direction of the Huff & Lakjer Funeral Home in Lansdale, Pa.

Captain Harold W. Millwater, 86
Retired Fanwood Police Officer
Captain Harold W. Millwater, 86, of Rio Grande died on Thursday, April 15, 1999 at Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital in Cape May Court House.
Born in North Plainfield, he had lived in Fanwood for many years before moving to Rio Grande in 1972.
Captain Millwater had been a member of the Fanwood Police Department for 30 years before retiring as a Captain in 1972. He was the first head of the department’s Detective Bureau.
He was a Past President of Policeman’s Benevolent Association Local No. 87 and was active on the Fanwood Police Pistol Team for many years. Captain Millwater received numerous awards for marksmanship, including the Norman F. Gibbs Memorial Trophy.
He was a former President and life member of the Fanwood Rescue Squad, and a former member of the Fanwood Fire Company and the Scotch Plains Field Club.
He had published his autobiography, “Fox Fire.”
Surviving are his wife, Marion “Dell” Ralli Millwater of Rio Grande; two daughters, Shirley A. Barattucci of Scotch Plains and Sandra L. Trivigno of Martinsville; a brother, Robert Millwater of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two sisters, Amanda Menzoff of Bradenton, Florida and Florence Mulley of Readington; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Melba Dannehower, 92
Melba Stuart Dannehower, 92, of Stuart, Florida died on Sunday, February 28, 1999 at home.
She had lived in Westfield from 1932 to 1975, and resided in Rossmoor and in Stuart since then.
Mrs. Dannehower was an associate of the First Methodist Church in Stuart and also was a member of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
She was a member of the Westfield Woman’s Club and had been Secretary of the Board of Education in Westfield.
She was predeceased by two husbands, William Leslie Stuart and Gilbert Lane Dannehower.
Surviving are two sisters, Charlotte Speak and Blanche Graeme, both of New Jersey.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, March 6, at the First Methodist Church in Stuart.

Elizabeth B. Squires, 83
Was Nurse At Faulkner Hospital in Massachusetts
Elizabeth B. Squires, 83, of Naples, Florida died on Sunday, April 11, 1999 at home.
Born in Richmond, Indiana on August 23, 1915, she had lived in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Scotch Plains, England, France and Spain before moving to Naples in 1974.
Mrs. Squires had been a nurse for several years at Faulkner Hospital in Jamaica Plains, Massachusetts.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and later the First Presbyterian Church of Naples.
Surviving are her husband of 62 years, Walter Squires; two sons, Thomas Squires of Golden, Colorado and John Squires of Port Washington, New York, and four grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday, April 14, at the Johnson Pittman Funeral Home in Naples.
