HELEN MARIA DAVIS, 58, of FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. She was a team leader and insurance adjuster for Proformance Insurance, Freehold, at the time of her death. She previously worked for the Hanover Insurance Co., Sayreville, for approximately 17 years, and Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. Helen was the owner of the Inches Off Salon for several years. Helen was born in Perth Amboy, graduated from Perth Amboy High School in 1966, and lived there until marrying her childhood sweetheart, Tom Davis. Tom and Helen shared a marriage of loving, laughter, trials and tribulations. After being childless for 20 years, they were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Jennifer Janice. Tom and Helen treasured Jennifer and believed they had been blessed with a miracle. She and Tom were married 27 years when Tom died after a short illness. Although Helen was devastated, she remained strong for her daughter and continued her mission to be the best mother any child could have. Jennifer says her mother accomplished this mission, and all who know Jennifer can confirm that. Helen's brother, Robert, remembers his sister as doing everything she could to help her younger brother and sister to do the things she never did. Helen had a fear of swimming, but she was determined that her baby brother would not be limited by a fear of water and dragged him to the YMCA and signed him up for swim classes. Because of this, he has spent countless days enjoying the water. Helen and Tom also did not let their fears stop their Jennifer from doing anything she wanted to do. She was in the pool at the YMCA at 2 years old and last year was on the swim team at her high school. Helen was an "amazing" cook, and she and her daughter admitted to being "shopaholics." Jennifer and her Mom loved to spend quality time together and with family. A year and a half after Tom Davis died, Helen met Tom DeVito in a group for people who lost their spouses. Tom DeVito lost Lynn, his loving wife of 30 years only a few short months before he and Helen met. At first they came together in grieving for their spouses and then a friendship and love developed. Tom and Helen spent only 6 1/2 years together, but it seemed like a lifetime of love and friendship. Tom brought into the family his two sons, Thomas Jr. and Joseph, and soon Thomas Jr.'s beautiful wife, Ann Marie. Then came the grandchildren, Vincent and Saralynn, who called Helen "Nana." Helen adored these babies and was a great "Nana." When Helen said "so big" to Vinnie he would grin from ear to ear. He loved to take "Nana's" hand and take walks. Joseph speaks of Helen as a woman who had the will to live and inspired him to try and turn his life around. Helen valued every day like it was the last and taught him to value his days. She was a fantastic woman, a great partner for his father, a wonderful mother and a quality person. Helen taught all the people she touched not to judge others, but to love all people for who they were. She was a "sister" to her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. If you had Helen in your life, you were blessed with a real friend. She will live in the hearts of all who knew her forever.

She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Richard Davis, in 1998; her parents, Maddalena Kurtas, in 1979, and Victor Kurtas, in 1998; and her nephew.
