Thomas E. Arther, 77
Thomas Ellis Arther, 77, of Kissimmee, Florida, formerly of Westfield, died Tuesday, August 12, 1997 of natural causes.
Mr. Arther was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He moved to Kissimmee in 1991 from Westfield.
He served in the United States Army during World War II.
He was a Patent Agent for a pharmaceutical company.
He had been active in the American Chemical Society, the New Jersey Figure Skating Association and the New Jersey Patent Law Association.
Surviving are a son, Neil R. Arther of Kissimmee; a daughter, Susan Meridith Darlington of St. Augustine, Florida; a sister, Clara Huffington of Churchville, Maryland, and two grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled by the Conrad and Thompson Funeral Home in Kissimmee.
Mark A. Solga, 85, Army Veteran;
RCA Telex Instructor for 49 Years
Mark A. Solga, 85, of Scotch Plains, died on Saturday, November 1, 1997 at the Department of Veterans Affairs New Jersey Health Care System facility in the Lyons section of Bernards.
Born in Jersey City, he moved to Scotch Plains in 1950.
Mr. Solga had been a telex instructor for RCA Global Communications in New York City for 49 years, retiring in 1977.
A United States Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Solga was a member of the American Legion Post in Scotch Plains.
He was predeceased by his wife, Estelle Salchetti Solga.
Surviving are two daughters, Rose Petruzela of Forked River and Dr. Patricia Solga of Stonington, Connecticut, and three grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, November 5, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Roman Catholic Church in North Arlington.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Parow Funeral Home in North Arlington.

Marie Perna, 66
Marie Perna, 66, of Westfield died Monday, October 27, 1997 in St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, she had lived in Orange before moving to Westfield in 1986.
Mr. Perna had been a production service representative for The New York Times for 26 years before retiring in 1994.
She was a member of the Newspaper Guild in New York.
Surviving are a daughter, Rosanne Perna; three sons, Leonard Perna, Jr., Michael Perna and Richard Perna; three sisters, Mary A. Zirger, Madeline Henry and Maria Peterson; a brother, Carmine Zazzaro, and six grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Saturday, November 1, at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Hugo R. Knight, 91
Hugo R. Knight, 91, of Westfield died on Monday, November 3, 1997 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Germany, Mr. Knight had lived in England for 12 years before moving to the United States in 1926.
He settled in Westfield in 1957.
Mr. Knight had worked as a travel agent before retiring in 1992. He belonged to several organizations of railroad enthusiasts.
Surviving are his wife, Mary A. Knight of Westfield; a nephew, and four nieces.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 8, at 11 a.m. at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, 335 Watterson Street, P.O. Box 356, Westfield, 07091.
K. M. Schmidt, 93
Katherine M. Schmidt, 93, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, formerly of Scotch Plains, died on Wednesday, September 10, 1997 in the Berne Retirement Village in New Bern, North Carolina.
Born in Russia, she had lived in Newark, Scotch Plains and Largo, Florida, before moving to Jacksonville 20 years ago.
She had been employed by Irvington General Hospital for 10 years before retiring 27 years ago.
Surviving are a daughter, Arline C. Kuhn; a son, Charles J. Schmidt; three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 13, in the Haeberle & Barth Colonial Home in Union.
Loretta A. Gardner, 86
Loretta Ann Scharff Gardner, 86, died Tuesday, September 9, 1997 at Harvest Village Nursing Home in Atco.
Born in Philadelphia, she was a former resident of Fanwood.
She had worked in the athletic department at Plainfield High School, retiring in 1973.
She was a member of Our Lady of Good Council Roman Catholic Church in Ocean City and the Leisure Club of Ocean City.
Surviving are her husband, G. Harlow Gardner; a daughter, Clare E. Colangelo of Freehold; two sons, Joseph C. Gardner of Berwyn, Pennsylvania and Donald L. Gardner of Brookfield, Connecticut; two sisters, Dolores Cleary of Ocean City and Colette Hofmann of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and eight grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Saturday, September 13, at the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Atco.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the LeRoy P. Wooster Funeral Home in Atco.
Charles M. Pond, 89
Charles Myers Pond, 89, of the Meadow Lakes section of Hightstown, died on Wednesday, September 10, 1997 at Princeton Medical Center in Princeton.
Born in Hartford, Connecticut, he had resided in the Westfield area for over 50 years before moving to Hightstown in 1996.
Mr. Pond had been employed as an Underwriter with Prudential Reinsurance Company and retired from their Skandia Division.
He graduated from Yale University in 1930 and Harvard Business School in 1932.
Mr. Pond was a member of the First Congregational Church of Westfield and was the Treasurer for the Meadow Lakes Forum.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Elizabeth Thayer Pond; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Lenskold of Allentown, Pennsylvania; a sister, Elizabeth Pond Dalton of Kings Ferry, New York, and two grandchildren.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, September 13, at the First Congregational Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Pond’s memory to the First Congregational Church of Westfield, 125 Elmer Street, Westfield, 07090.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Saul Colonial Home in Hamilton Square.
