Giuseppe DiMartino
Giuseppe Antonio “Tony”
DiMartino, 69, of Carteret died on Tuesday,
January 18, 2000 at JFK Medical Center
in Edison.
Born in Abruzzi, Italy, he lived in
Carteret for the past 29 years.
Mr. DiMartino had been employed
as an assembly worker at General Motors
in Linden for 27 years, retiring in 1993.
He was a parishioner of St. Joseph
Roman Catholic Church in Carteret
and was a member of the Knights of
Columbus, St. Andrew’s Council in
Avenel.
Mr. DiMartino was a Fourth-Degree
Knight of the Reverend John J. Griffin
General Assembly in Woodbridge.
He was a member of the Carteret
Senior Citizens Afternoon Group.
Surviving are his wife, Josephine
Cardillo DiMartino; two sons, John
DiMartino of Howell and Michael
DiMartino of Carteret; a daughter,
Nancy Barnes of Fanwood; three sisters,
Diodata Bevacqua of Ocala, Fla.,
Lola Cappuccia of Middlesex and
Eleanor DiMartino of Springfield, and
two grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow,
Friday, January 21, at the Synowiecki
Funeral Home in Carteret, followed by a
10:30 a.m. Mass at St. Joseph Church.
Entombment will take place at the
Good Shepherd Chapel Mausoleum at
St. Gertrude’s Cemetery in Colonia.
Visitation will take place from 2 to 4
p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral
home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations
may be made to St. Joseph Church.
Anna Belle McCoy, 70
Was Honored By St. John’s Baptist Church Last Year
Anna Belle “Mama Mitty” McCoy,
70, a lifelong resident of Scotch
Plains, died on Monday, January 17, 2000
in Muhlenberg Regional Medical
Center in Plainfield.
Mrs. McCoy was a parishioner of
St. John’s Baptist Church in Scotch
Plains, where she was a charter member
of the credit union, a member of
the Pastor’s Aide Auxiliary and a
former member of the Gospel Chorus.
She was honored as a senior citizen
by the church in 1999.
She was predeceased by two brothers,
Wilford Boykin and Edward Boykin.
Surviving are six sons, Warren
McCoy of Piscataway and David
McCoy of Belleville and Alton
McCoy, Calvin McCoy, Ralph McCoy
and James McCoy, all of Scotch
Plains; three daughters, Chaunelle
McCoy of Roselle, May Chaney and
Cheryl McCoy, both of Scotch Plains;
two brothers, William Boykin of
Scotch Plains and Marion Boykin,
Jr. of Plainfield; a sister, Ella A.
Coles of Scotch Plains; 16 grandchildren
and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11
a.m. tomorrow, Friday, January 21,
at St. John’s Baptist Church in Scotch
Plains, with the Reverend Kelmo C.
Porter officiating. Interment will be
at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m.
today, Thursday, January 20, at the
church.
Arrangements are under the direction
of Brown’s Funeral Home in Plainfield.
Joseph Cunnane, 71
Borden’s Retiree; Decorated Veteran of World War II
Joseph Cunnane, 71, of Monroe
Township died on Tuesday, January
18, 2000 in the Gibbons Nursing Home in
Monroe Township.
Born in Newark, he had lived in
East Orange, Westfield, Point Pleasant
and Avenel before moving to Monroe Township.
Mr. Cunnane had been a delivery
man for Borden’s Dairy of Newark
for many years before retiring.
He served in the United States
Army during World War II and received the
Victory Medal and the Army of Occupational
Medal.
Surviving are a brother, Donald
Cunnane, and a sister, Margaret Batty.
Graveside services will be held at
11 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, January
21, in the Forest Lawn Memorial
Park Cemetery in Iselin.
Arrangements are being handled
by the Thomas J. Costello Funeral
Home in Iselin.
Esther Trome, 81
Esther Trome, 81, of Westfield died
on Tuesday, January 18, 2000 in Overlook
Hospital in Summit.
Born in Newark, she had lived in
Hillside and Irvington before moving
to Westfield 20 years ago.
Mrs. Trome was a member of the
Newark Asthmatic League, the Ladies
Auxiliary Knights of Pythias in
Newark and Deborah Hospital of
Browns Mills.
Surviving are a son, Joel Trome; a
sister, Bessie Turkowitz, and two
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held yesterday,
Wednesday, January 19, in the
Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.
Helen E. Minard, 92
Helen E. Minard, 92, of Bedminster
died on Monday, January 17, 2000 at home.
Born in Westfield, she had lived in
South Amboy before moving to
Bedminster nine years ago.
Mrs. Minard was a homemaker.
She was a communicant of St.
Brigid Roman Catholic Church in
Peapack and a member of the
Bedminster Far Hills Senior Citizens
and the Catholic Daughters of
America.
She was predeceased by her husband,
Charles Minard, in 1976.
Surviving are two sons, John C.
Minard of Brick and Roland J. Minard
of Bedminster; a daughter, Roberta
T. Minard of Red Bank; a sister,
Peggy Atamantyk of Portland, Tex.;
eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will take place at 9:15
a.m. today Thursday, January 20,
from the Layton Funeral Home in
Bedminster, followed by a 10 a.m.
Mass at St. Brigid Church. Entombment
will be at Fairview Cemetery in
Westfield.
Dr. Thomas McHugh, 78
Educator; Assistant Principal In Town Schools
Dr. Thomas McHugh, 78, of Scotch
Plains, whose career with the Westfield
school district spanned 24 years,
died on Sunday, December 13, 1998 in
Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Allentown, Pennsylvania,
he moved to Scotch Plains 30 years
ago.
Dr. McHugh had retired in 1993 as
Assistant Principal of Westfield High
School, a post he assumed in 1988.
He had previously served in the same
capacity at both Edison and Roosevelt
junior high schools, now Edison Intermediate
and Roosevelt Intermediate Schools, in
Westfield.
He had been an Assistant Principal
and two-time Principal of Westfield
High School's summer session, and
was also the Protempore Administrator at
Hillside Middle School in the Bridgewater
Raritan Regional District for the 1985-1986
school year.
Earlier, he had been the Principal
of Saint Ann's Elementary School in
Newark and a history teacher and
guidance counselor at Middlesex
High School.
Dr. McHugh graduated from
Moravian College in Bethlehem,
Pennsylvania with a bachelor's degree
in social studies. He earned master's
degrees in secondary administration,
history and guidance from Lehigh University,
also in Bethlehem.
In 1986, he was awarded his Doctorate in
anthropology from Rutgers University in New
Brunswick, and was certified in Alaska,
Connecticut, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New
York and Pennsylvania.
He began his education career in
1959 with the Allentown, Pennsylvania school
system, working as a student teacher,
substitute teacher and interim principal.
He also served as the Director of Guidance
for Central Catholic High School, also in
Allentown.
Before entering the education field,
he had been employed in the Personnel
Department of the Bethlehem Steel Company
in Bethlehem.
Dr. McHugh was a member of the
Westfield Association of Administrators, the
Association for Supervision and Curriculum
Development, the American and New Jersey
Personnel and Guidance associations.
He was also a member of the National and
New Jersey education associations, and the
New Jersey and National Associations of
Secondary School Principals.
He was also a member of the
Schoolmen's Club of Allentown, the
American and Lehigh County historical
societies, the Watchung Nature Club,
the National Audubon Society and Kiwanis
International.
Dr. McHugh was a former Deputy Grand Knight
of the Monsignor Watterson Council of the
Knights of Columbus in Westfield, and had
received recognition for outstanding work
as the organization's adviser to Squires.
He was also a Fourth Degree member of the
Knights of Columbus Watchung Assembly, and
served on the Board of Directors of the Young
Men's Temperance Society.
Dr. McHugh had served in the Royal Canadian
Air Force during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Mary McHugh; a
daughter, Maryellen McHugh-Pengelly; three
brothers, John McHugh, Charles McHugh and
Eugene McHugh, and a grandchild.
A Funeral Mass will be offered
today, Thursday, December 17, at 10
a.m. in St. Bartholomew the Apostle
Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements are being handled by the
Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
