Eugene J. Craig, 74
Eugene J. Craig, 74, of Westfield
died on Sunday, December 7, 1997 at home.
Born in Orange, he had lived in
Westfield for 40 years.
Mr. Craig had been a manager with
the Union Carbide Corporation in
Bound Brook and later in New York
City for 25 years before retiring.
He graduated from Rutgers University
in Newark in 1953 with a Bachelor
of Arts Degree in Economics.
A United States Navy veteran of
World War II, Mr. Craig was a member
of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post
No. 711 of Bloomfield.
Surviving are his wife, June Craig;
a son, Jeffrey Craig; three daughters,
Jeanne Cosby, Joyce McGowan and
Janis Gomes; two sisters, Sue Morris
and Dorothy George, and six grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled
by the Dooley Funeral Home, 218
North Avenue, West, in Cranford.
Lydia Marsh, 78
Lydia Marsh, 78, of Scotch Plains
died on Monday, December 22, at
home.
Born in Czechoslovakia, Mrs.
Marsh immigrated to the United States
in 1953, living in New York City before
settling in Scotch Plains in 1962.
Mrs. Marsh worked in the clerical
department of Muhlenberg Regional
Medical Center in Plainfield.
She was a member of the German-
American Club in Union and the
Scotch Plains Meridians.
Her first husband, Willie Neumann,
preceded her in death, as well as her
second husband, Erhardt W. Marsh,
who died in 1981.
Surviving are a son, Peter K.
Neumann; a daughter, Sigrid
Neumann; several brothers and sisters;
five grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Wednesday,
December 24, at the Rossi Funeral
Home in Scotch Plains.
John V. Schen, 74
Exxon Executive; Graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic
John VanCampen Schen, 74, of
Royal Oak, Maryland, formerly of
Westfield, died on Wednesday, December
17, 1997 at Easton Memorial Hospital
in Maryland.
Born May 31, 1923 in Belmont, New
York, he was the son of the late Frank
and Marina VanCampen Schen.
Mr. Schen graduated first in his
class in chemical engineering from
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in
1947 with membership in Tau Beta Pi
and Sigma Zi.
He had been employed for 38 years
with Exxon Chemicals as an executive
at eight oil, plastics, fertilizer and laminate
plants in the United States and
abroad.
Beginning his career at the Bayway
Refinery in Linden, Mr. Schen became
manager of the Specialty Plant in Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, in 1963. During
seven years in Europe, he served as
General Manager of Esso Plastics in
Roskilde, Denmark, and of Esso Chemical
in Brussels, Belgium, and as Managing
Director for Esso Chemie NV in
Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
He became General Manager of the
Nevamar Division of Exxon Chemical
Company in Odenton, Maryland, in
1973, and returned to the Bayway
Refinery two years later as manager of
engineering, construction and maintenance.
From 1980 to 1983, he was
project executive of the LLPDE and
PVC Projects with Imperial Oil/Esso
Chemical Canada in Sarnia, Ontario.
Mr. Schen served in the United
States Army Corps of Engineers during
World War II.
While living in Westfield, Mr. Schen
was a member of the First Congregational
Church and the Echo Lake Country
Club.
Surviving are his wife of 17 years,
Julia Rogers Schen; three daughters,
Beth Victoria Cullum of Roanoke, Virginia,
Dr. Cathy Richardson Schen of
Sudbury, Massachusetts, and Molly
VanCampen Schen of Auburn, Maine;
two stepdaughters, Joan Rogers Fullerton
of Westfield and Abbie Fullerton
Shoobs of Passaic Park; a stepson,
Ted Fullerton of Media, Pennsylvania;
two brothers, Dr. Charles Schen
of Hamburg, New York, and Thomas
Nicholson of Cuba, New York; his
former wife, Gail Hansen Schen of
Westfield, and five grandchildren.
Memorial services were held on
Sunday, December 21 in Maryland.
Interment will take place on Saturday,
December 27, at Fairview Cemetery in
Westfield. A gathering will be held at
3 p.m. that day at the home of Joan
Fullerton, 812 Prospect Street,
Westfield.
Memorial contributions may be
made to the First Congregational
Church of Westfield.
Juliana A. Pares, 100
Juliana Antonana Pares, 100, of
Westfield died on Friday, December 5,
1997 at the Clara Maass Medical Center in
Belleville.
She was born in Viana Navarra,
Spain.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are two sons, Gustavo G.
Pares and Gerardo O. Pares, both of
Westfield; a sister, Ines Antonana of
Westfield; four grandchildren, and
three great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held on Monday,
December 8, at the Galante Funeral
Home in Union, followed by a Mass at
Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic
Church in Mountainside. Entombment
took place at St. Gertrude's Cemetery
in Colonia.
Lois L. Polk, 87
Former Teacher; Co-Founder of Women's League
Lois L. Polk, 87, of Plainfield died on
Saturday, December 13, at Abbott
Manor Nursing Home in Plainfield.
Mrs. Polk was born in Topeka, Kansas.
She was a graduate of Newark State
College, now Kean University, in
Union.
Mrs. Polk had been a schoolteacher
from 1952 to 1978. She was a member
of St. John's Baptist Church in Scotch
Plains, a member of Phi Delta Kappa,
the National Association of University
Women, and was President and
co-founder of the Women's League in
Vaux Hall.
Her husband, Joseph Clarence Polk,
and a daughter, Diane M. Polk both
predeceased her.
Surviving are three daughters,
Audrey Wheeler of Orange, Marian P.
Jones of North Plainfield and Lois B.
Brown of Scotch Plains; four grandchildren,
and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on
Wednesday, December 17, at St. John's
Church.
Anthony S. Shallo, Sr.
Anthony S. Shallo, Sr., 50, died Friday,
December 12, 1997 at Muhlenberg
Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Plainfield, he had lived in
South Plainfield before moving to
Piscataway 28 years ago.
He co-owned A&H Imported Italian
Deli in Piscataway for the past two
years. Before that, he was a mechanic
for Kentile Floors in South Plainfield
for 32 years.
Mr. Shallo was a member of the
Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church
in South Plainfield and was the bingo
caller there for 10 years.
Surviving is his wife, Patricia Nutley
Shallo; four sons, Anthony S. Shallo,
Jr. and Timothy J. Shallo, both of South
Plainfield, Ricky V. Shallo of Scotch
Plains and Robert L. Shallo of
Piscataway; two brothers, Lawrence
Shallo of Piscataway and John Shallo
of South Plainfield; two sisters, Nancy
Romeo and Antoinette Mulligan, both
of Piscataway, and five grandchildren.
Services were held yesterday,
Wednesday, December 17, at the James
W. Conroy Funeral Home in South
Plainfield. A Funeral Mass followed
at the Sacred Heart Church.
