Myron E. Smith, 71
Army Veteran; Had Been State Forester in
Myron Elliott Smith, 71, of Springfield,
Vermont, died on Wednesday,
December 17, 1997 at the Dartmouth-
Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon,
New Hampshire.
Born on February 11, 1926, in Brooklyn,
Mr. Smith was the son of Charles
Samuel and Lou Willie Kessler Smith.
He grew up in Westfield and graduated
from Westfield High School in
1944.
He served in the United States Army
during World War II in 1945, and in
1949 he graduated from the School of
Forestry at Syracuse University.
Mr. Smith had worked in lumbering
until 1966, then as a forester in Orange
County, Vermont and later as a state
forester in Springfield, Vermont, until
his retirement in 1988.
Surviving are his wife, Loretta
Kasch Smith, whom he married on
November 24, 1954 in Monroe, New
York; a daughter, Linda Park of Norwich,
Vermont; a stepson, Michael
Nikola of Jacks Creek, Tennessee; a
brother, Paul Smith of Hope, and two
grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on
Monday, December 22, in the Norwich,
Vermont, Congregational
Church.

Funeral arrangements were handled
by the Rand-Wilson Funeral Home of
Hanover, New Hampshire.
Sylvia Lurie, 83
Sylvia Lurie, 83, of Cranbury died
on Saturday, December 20, 1997 in the Barbara
E. Cheung Memorial Hospice in
Edison.
Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Lurie had
lived in Scotch Plains and Plainfield
before moving to Cranbury 11 years
ago.
Surviving are a son, Leonard Lurie;
a daughter, Arlene Lehrman; four
grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Monday,
December 22, in the Gosselin
Funeral Home in Edison.
Michael J. Regan
Past Councilman; Worked on Gubernatorial Campaign
Michael J. Regan, 81, of Scotch
Plains died on Monday, December 22, 1997
at home.
Born in Bayonne, Mr. Regan had
lived in Elizabeth before moving to
Scotch Plains 33 years ago.
Mr. Regan, who began his career at
the American Insurance Company in
Newark, was an insurance and surety
bond broker at G.R. Murray Insurance,
a division of O'Gorman & Young
Insurance in Princeton, for 33 years.
He had also worked as a New Jersey
state trooper in the 1940s.
He was a graduate of St. Peter's
Prep in Jersey City, and earned his
bachelor's degree from Fordham University
in The Bronx in 1938. Mr. Regan
was awarded his law degree from the
university in 1949.
He was a United States Marine
Corps veteran, having been stationed
in Panama during World War II.
Mr. Regan was a former President
and a member of the Union County
Parks Commission, a former Scotch
Plains Councilman, a member of the
Plainfield Country Club in Edison, the
Knights of Columbus Father Nelligan
Council in Scotch Plains and the Holy
Name Society of the Immaculate Heart
of Mary Roman Catholic Church in
Scotch Plains.
He was also the original fundraising
Campaign Co-Chairman for the Immaculate
Heart of Mary Church; Union
County Campaign Manager for the
late former Governor Richard J.
Hughes; former Treasurer of the Newark
Parking Authority, and a member
of the National Association of Surety
Bond Producers.
Surviving are his wife, Claire
Sweeney Regan; three daughters,
Judge Katherine Dupuis of Westfield,
Ellen R. Basil and Jane T. Regan, both
of New York City; three sons, Dr. James
B. Regan of Oak Hill, Virginia, Michael
J. Regan of Concorde, Massachusetts
and Daniel P. Regan of Scotch Plains;
three sisters, Anne Grunewald of
Whiting, Margaret Ketterson of
Lakehurst and Eileen Fitzmaurice of
Wolcott, New York, and 11 grandchildren.
The funeral was held on Wednesday,
December 24, from the Memorial
Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue,
West, in Fanwood, followed by a Mass
at the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Church. Interment took place at
Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Myrtle Matthews, 84
Myrtle Matthews, 84, of Plainfield
died on Sunday, December 14, 1997 at
Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center
in Plainfield.
Born in High Bridge, she had lived
most of her life in Plainfield.
Surviving are a daughter, Betty Jane
August of Scotch Plains; a sister,
Pauline Pasture of Union Beach; two
grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
Funeral services were held on
Thursday, December 18, at the Memorial
Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue,
West, in Fanwood.
Grace S. Hanko, 75
Chapel Member; One of First Women at Rahway Firm
Grace S. Hanko, 75, died on Monday,
December 15, 1997 at the home of her
daughter in Bridgewater.
Born in Rahway, she had lived in
Scotch Plains for 40 years before
moving to Bridgewater in July.
Mrs. Hanko was one of the first
women to work at National Pneumatic
in Rahway during World War II as part
of the war effort. She later worked for
IBM in New York City.
Mrs. Hanko was a member of the
Woodside Chapel in Fanwood.
Surviving are two daughters,
Suzanne Liccardo of Bridgewater and
Mary Beth Cimino of Fanwood, and
two sons, Christopher J. Hanko of
Bridgewater and Jay Hanko of Indianapolis.
A memorial service was held at the
Woodside Chapel on Sunday, December
21. A private interment took place
at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were under the direction
of the Memorial Funeral Home,
155 South Avenue, West, in Fanwood.
Enid M. McGall, 79
Enid M. McGall, 79, of North
Plainfield died on Monday, December
22, 1997 at home.
Born in The Bronx, Mrs. McGall had
lived in Westfield and Fanwood before
moving to North Plainfield in 1973.
Mrs. McGall was a clerk at the Railway
Express Agency of New York
City. She had also been an employee
of Lockheed Corporation in
Watchung for 17 years.
Her husband, Joseph T. McGall,
died in 1963.
Surviving are three sons, Robert T.
McGall of New Brunswick, Thomas J.
McGall of North Plainfield and John
McGall of Spray Beach; a daughter,
Judith A. Ventura of North Plainfield;
six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services and visitation will
be at noon on Friday, December 26, at
the Scarpa Funeral Home in North
Plainfield.
